One of the reasons I ended up in San Francisco. Back in 2000 it was that easy to find an apartment - saw the for rent sign, met the landlord, he showed us the apt, asked for a check deposit and he handed us the keys on the spot - took all of 10 mins. 2 bedroom, 1.5 baths, wood burning fireplace, and parking all for $1500 bucks and one block from Golden Gate Park. SF was magic back then.

RIP, Anna Madrigral, as in Medieval. Olympia Dukakis has always been the actor that I felt fit the role over these 4 decades. Thank you, Amistead Maupin, for giving her the nod for Olympia to deliver an amazing finish to your Tales of the City.
And to her family with those that loved her I extend my deepest condolences.

She is a great actress, but she was not really believable as a man! A travesty, like all trannies, but the wrong way round. How can a woman play a man pretending to be a woman? It was Victor Victoria!

Oh the music is so HAUNTING here! The flute, her finding the apartment, the sense of knowing from Mrs Madrigal’s gaze - it all has a feeling of destiny unfolding in the narrative.

I so adore Olympia Dukakis's performance in Tales of the City. Thank you so much Ms. Dukakis.

I watched this TV series in 1993 (and then subsequently read the (then) six books of the Tales of the City series). It took me 13 years to finally visit San Francisco and yes, it lived up to my high expectations.

    "Thank you!", "Yes, you should."
Bizarrely, that line sums up so many interactions/situations I've been lucky enough to find myself in, first in the City, then later in Santa Monica/Westside.

So in the 70s you could get an Apartment in San Fransisco with any random low paying job? Yes you could. In 1978 the nicest most upscale places in the city were $400-$500 a month.

I had a large studio in the Marina in 1989 that cost $600 month. Hard to believe now. Of course, it did collapse in the earthquake that year.

Indeed. This wasn't a fantasy series (a joke for the younger folk). My 1st apt., circa 1975, was 150.00 a month, & huge, outside Washington, D.C. For reals.

I moved to San Francisco in 1985. First apartment, a huge 1 bedroom, near Golden Gate Park. $300 a month. I had $800 total at the time, and had just gotten a job waiting tables. Yes, it was possible then. And like Mary Ann, tens of thousands came to the City with not a lot of money, and could start a new life from scratch like the character did. It was a magical time despite AIDS ravaging the City.
