Bass guitar signal flow:
Fingers!
Aria Pro SB-1010 (the 1010 is a rare, short-scale version of the venerable SB-1000)
Rupert Neve RNDI direct box
Apollo Twin USB audio interface
Channel 1 of the Apollo (Hi-Z input fed by the direct box thru output) goes to a UAD Ampeg SVTVR Classic Plug-In (Unison slot)
Channel 2 of the Apollo (Lo-Z input fed by the main direct box out) goes to a Manley VOXBOX (Unison slot)
The two signals are recorded, then bussed together, in Pro Tools with some light LA-2A compression and a touch of the MDWEQ5 3-Band EQ. I removed some midrange boxiness around 280Hz and a added a slight lift around 2k for some added bite. - Hudba
Super duper cool! I was a later DD fan, when I watched OW on MTV at my uncle's house in 1993. I knew about the older songs as a small child, and loved them, but did not know the band that wrote it. It was after watching the video I ran to the mall and bought as many back albums as I could. Sadly, CDs were very expensive, and built the discography over the course of years. Yep, a very hardcore fan here, but it seems the enthusiasm has waned over the years. I guess you can say I am not *obsessed*, but still really love the band and their music.
It sounds like Ordinary World had the same effect on you as ISTYSK had on me! I was hooked from that point forward. I like the way you put it. I'm not obsessed. I love so much other music as well. They simply hold a special place for me that no other band will. They are my Beatles! ♥
You have always had the ability to nail the feel of John’s playing. You just get it. You are the OG of his covers and it’s nice to see you back. Your tone and that gorgeous Aria. And this song. Lovely.
p.s. would love to see you cover Pressure Off. A stellar DD song
I really appreciate your kind words John. 😎🙏
ARENA ! TOP TEN BILLBOARD USA
Great story and love your bass playing. I've always thought that John's playing on "Is There Something I Should Know?" does not get the attention it deserves. I've always loved John's playing on the Monster Mix version as well and the different outro for the video version of the song compared to the single, too. Miss your videos on CZcams. I hope you do more like you once did - I look at you as the OG per say of playing multiple DD songs on bass on CZcams and since you started it, many have followed with their own CZcams videos playing DD bass lines. Prefer yours though!
Wow, Bill. That really means a lot to me. I'm trying to put out more, and more often! I'm a pretty busy dude with lots of interests, though. Managing my time is pretty challenging. I will be back soon! ☺️🙏😎🤘
🦋22:10 Spot on❣️🤗❤️
Thank you! 😻🎶
Hey man! I've been watching your videos for years. So glad to see you're still putting them out there! I too shared a room with my brother, but he was kind of a metalhead. I was the Duranie...and, some 40 years later, I still am! One of the things I've always loved most about Duran is John's basslines. Hence, my interest in your videos. I was so psyched when Duran was inducted into the R&RHoF. Anyhow, keep rockin' that bass, man!
Hey Prescott! Nice to hear from you. I'm sure by now you've gotten your brother into some DD too, yes?
@@zumazmusic Well, he's one of those guys who tries to put on a "tough guy" persona for whatever reason, when secretly, he's a marshmallow. Although he would never admit to it, I think he actually is a DD fan. In fact, I have a distinct memory from the early eighties when Hungry Like the Wolf was first released, and he was actually jammin' to it. Had his stereo cranked up and everything. Of course, this was before he knew I was a fan. Once he found out I was into them, well, that was the end of that! Oh well...his loss!
@@prescottmanor7575 That gave me a chuckle.
Cool to see you upload this! I started playing bass this year and despite loving all things new wave n 80s, I did not enjoy DD for a long time, with the odd exception aside. But now at 28, JT's bass playing has made me fall totally in love with them and I have progressed a lot (well, for self taught) in a short period of time due to trying to play so much of his lines.
I just wanted to say thank you because I think Shadows On Your Side is just a masterpiece but there is so little about it out there, and you're the only decent frame of reference for learning it on the whole internet. I have watched that video a million times now surely and I try to practice it every day. Whilst I'm nowhere near as good as you, I'm getting there in large part because of you.
On top of that, I love this song too but again, there's not a lot out there for it. I was just about to go to bed (5.30am in Scotland!) but then this came up. I'm glad you're still uploading and I appreciate your videos so much man. Thank you again. :)
I'm honored to be part of your journey. I'm most definitely still learning, every single day! Every time I prepare for one of these videos, I realize I've been playing it all wrong. I'm sure that will keep happening, til the day I can't move these fingers. And that is great! Once we way, "I've learned it", we're DONE. We must always be learning!
@@zumazmusic My dad is a bassist and he says the same thing, we'll always be learning. It's true, ever since I started playing New Moon On Monday and eventually "got it", I knew something was still off about it, I couldn't figure it out but it didn't sound quite right. Then I started learning Rio, with it's hundreds of ghost notes, and one day I realised what was missing from New Moon! Funnily, I went to your video too, just to confirm I wasn't imagining the ghost notes :') I have wanted to comment before, but I thought I'd maybe be silly as the videos are from many years ago. But I had to let you know I'm beyond grateful for your vids on all these gold but lesser known DD songs. I hope you tackle Of Crime And Passion one day!
@@BassMistress-pz1fy Crime and Passion is on my list! Has been for years. Thanks for the reminder. And your dad is a wise man!
ARENA !!! TOP 10 DURAN DURAN!
Agreed! It had a great influence on me. 🙏🎶
excelente broo....saludos de chile
Muy amable hermano! Saludos de Los Angeles (y de Mexico tambien!). 🎶
man i love this.
I'm not surprised. You are like me. DD through and through. 😎🤘
Dude you rock
I go 5150 when folks dig my video. Thanks man!
Zuma is back! Excellent as always, my friend! Looking forward to seeing more!
Check out Ben Post's channel everyone. He's really good!
Thank you Zuma. Had same experience with this song as a kid. Used to listen to it for hours trying to decipher that bass line and how to play it. Bought 5 Arena cassette tapes because of how much I wore em down.
Are you serious? Then there's at least two of us! Ha ha. I also wore down my cassette tape! It wasn't even mine, it was my older brother's who I mentioned in the video. We also wore out the Arena video cassette. Also had it on Beta!
@@zumazmusic Yep!!! First I had no idea what instrument was making that snapping sound. Those octave slapping and popping.
I didn't even know that bass guitar existed but fell in love with that sound. Found out later and bought one. My first bass was Yolanda. Made in Chechoslovakia at that time. Piece of 💩. You couldn't play slap on that one. Lol.
But later on when I got real bass everything was easier to play.
I was happiest kid alive when I discovered octave slap.
@@sonsofmedusa I believe that bass guitar "slapping" ignites the lizard brain.
Damn, man, long hiatus! Glad to see you are in good health and still playing.
Thanks for chiming in Señor Mark! I've missed being around. 🤘🎶
Good to see you back at it. I hope all is well your way.
Yo Charles! Good to see you too.
Great video, nice shirt. 🎶💕
Thank you GG❣️ The shirt was a gift from my biggest fan. 😍
Love it!!

Welcome Back Zuma! i missed your videos a lot, Thanks to you I've learnt playing many John's bass lines! pls keep continuing posting videos
Thank you! That is exactly why I began posting videos in the first place. I wanted to inspire and help others. I'm definitely planning on uploading more frequently so stay tuned. 😎🤘
Nagyon jól hangzik.
Nagyon szépen köszönöm!
¡Fenomenal!
Gracias! 😸🎶
Thank you for this, I have been waiting for my long time YT friend to upload, it comes at a time in my life where I have lost many friends and it's nice to know you are still here , it is very much needed. Once again thank you.
That's very kind of you Daniel! 🙏 ... Losses like that are tough, lost my Pops recently. Despite missing those we've lost, I believe that WE ARE ONE. 😇 ... I'll be back with another video VERY soon. Thank YOU!
Simplemente delightful.. Gracias Moctezuma .
Primo! 🙏❤️
Zuma you're the reason I bought a bass...Great to see you again .
I'm honored Sal. Keep on groovin'! 😎🤘
Simplemente fantástico
Muchas Gracias El Mas Fabuloso 😸🤘
Beautiful :)
Nice Job Zuma!
Frags Forever my Quakers!
Nice to see your vids again Zuma. Great job as always. Love that bass! Is that a new one? Came across one of your CD's unpacking post-Harvey boxes the other day (never ending process haha), and I played some of your music you'd sent me over the years. Haven't had time to jam and play on my end, but a lot more songwriting and singing. Just got some parts from for my artsy bass build been dying to do. Hope to find time to get this thing done! lol Been a long time, let's catch up soon!
Hola! Isn't it late in Texas? Go to sleep! How's Roman doin'? Did I send you Date with Dizzy stuff or my solo stuff? 😎🤘
And yes, sort of. I've had this SB-1010 for a good while now, however, it is the newest of the bunch.
@@zumazmusic it's probably always late for me haha... but I am sleeping more (so that's good ). Ro is good! Wkg a ton (composition/perf/production). Lives there in LA. Started out with 2 composers, and then moved over to AudioMachine. Yeah you sent DwD stuff mostly. I think there was some solo stuff too.
I don't think I've seen you play this bass before--black SB 1000. Is it new?
This is not an SB-1000, it is an SB-1010! It is a rare short scale version of the 1000. Cool, huh? I've had it for a while now, but it was one of the newer purchases, relatively speaking. I also used it in my "Hungrier than Wild" video.
Fantastic tone, any tips on how to replicate ? Apart from the obvious Aria!
Thank you Paul! I worked hard on trying to get close to JT's "Arena" tone. Apart from the obvious Aria and "tone is in the fingers", I have updated the video description with my signal chain so please check it out.
Is that the same cat from your girls on film night version video!!!
Yes Abdul! 😻😭 I cry, though, because she crossed the rainbow bridge at the end of 2021. I miss her very much. She was at least 22 human years old. 🙏💕
@@zumazmusic ahhh thats so sad & I know how you feel bcos we lost our cat 10 years ago after 20 years (it was bad) great companions sorely missed RIP dear friends.
Any chance you will cover / teach Anniversary??
It's more likely I'll do More JOY! but I'm so behind with my song queue! We'll see 🙈 ... Check out Ben Post here on YT. He covered Anniversary.
