I enjoyed it. But I thought it was rushed to the tragedy that happened. I don’t think we got to know the characters like we should have. But it is something special to me as they don’t make many like this anymore. It’s not bad. It’s one I’ll definitely pick on physical media. Cast was great. Cinematography, Production was well. I was impressed as it looked like it was from that time.

The way Kevin tells the story of Fritz pulling the gun on him, Fritz said “If you had any guts you’d kill yourself like your brothers,” and Kevin said “It takes guts to live not to die.” Shame they didn’t find a way to include this, seems like it would’ve fit in perfectly toward the end.

Absolutely loved this film. The intro with Fritz and the title card paying homage to Raging Bull had me going, “holy shit,” but the film lost some of its steam. I understand why Chris was cut out, but part of me still feels like there was a way to include him as well as the story where Fritz pulled the gun on Kevin. Other than that I felt this was the film that wrestling deserves. I only wish it stayed with the tone set in the black and white intro for a little longer and let each tragedy settle for a bit longer too. Completely agree with the 4.5/5.

Chris dying it what really set Kerry over the edge to let himself go on top of his addiction problems. In the Vice Doc Kevin said when Kerry called him he said “I want to go be with my brothers. What Chris did you have to be so strong. I want to go join him.” Remember Kerry took Chris under his wing and was training him and he was working out with him to help Chris. Same that Kev did with Michael. And honestly out of all the brothers Chris wanted to be the wrestler the most.. I get they had a ton of tragedies and really tough moments already in the movie, but that would have been good to add to the story.
Also if the guy who played Ric would have actually watched promos Ric did before he filmed.. that dude was underwhelming for Ric Flair in a wrestling movie.

What's so captivating and unique about The Iron Claw is that in another script or setting, it would feel corny and out-of-place, but as professional wrestling being the epicentre of it, it feels just right. Durkin has created a love letter to professional wrestling with his The Iron Claw the same way Tarantino did for Japanese epics with his Kill Bill. Sure the story is perhaps the bleakest and devastating in the medium's history, but it's handled with such care and gentleness that you just feel nothing but helplessness for the brothers, thanks to the haunting and harrowing atmosphere created by its cinematography and score. But in the end it's a movie that gives you hope once everything spirals down. Zac has given his best performance not only of his career but a performance that reflects professional wrestling with his physical storytelling, the best of the year. Despite being a wrestling fan myself, I do feel biased saying it's my movie of the year, but the Boat scene alone has made me feel more than anything I've ever seen this year, I do get the pacing issues, but it's more reflective for Kevin how fast everything felt for him. While The Wrestler is still the best movie about wrestlers living as people, The Iron Claw is about people being wrestlers. 4.75/5 (5 if it was in Tokyo Dome and had Will Ospreay in it)

I learned about the Von Erich's in the Dark Side of the Ring episode and while I like and affected by the movie, the events and portrayals of the family felt...a bit safe? I get that it was condensed and all for runtime purposes but Sean Durkin did an amazing job capturing the love and comradery of the brothers. I wish the movie delved into their involvement with their community as they were more than just wrestlers and family-first types.

Fans now don't realize that the manic, frothing Ric Flair dropping elbows on his jacket was NOT the traveling NWA World Champion of the 80s. He could get worked up, but in most cases, his onscreen persona was way WAY more calm, cool, and collected than it was in 90s WCW.

I live in Dallas and my peers (born 1998) don't really know about the Von Erich's because they were before our time. I think what's crazy is that there's no trace of their arena, The Dallas Sportatorium, to be found at all. There's a liquor store a block away called "River Cut Rate Liquor", and every time I grab a bottle with my friends, I always point out that the empty plot of land that they're looking at is where wrestling history happened. It's where The Undertaker had his first ever match against Bruiser Brody, it's where Gentleman Chris Adams trained a young prospect named Steve Austin, and it's where the Von Erich's had their dynasty! Today it's just an empty field on the street of a liquor store, bail bonds, and the county jail. It's a shame that there's not some sort of memorial or landmark, but to me it's still pretty surreal to think that what seems like an empty plot of land that you pass everyday holds so much significance.

Thanks for sharing that story. That's kind of a bummer about the old Sportatorium. I was 7 when we moved to Dallas in 1980. My little brother and I watched WCCW every Saturday night. Saw the rise of the von Erich brothers and so many other stars, Junkyard Dog, Iceman King Parsons, Scandar Ackbar, a list so long I'd be here all day typing it out. My brother and I haven't seen each other in over 25 years but we reconnected over a conversation we had about this movie and the memories that came flooding back to us when we used to watch it religiously. Used to beat the shit out of each other with the iron claw and figure 4's and Boston Crabs too! Anyway, not really a wrestling fan anymore but I do love thinking back to those days. Thanks again for sharing that with everyone.

This brought me back to that era, when I used to watch wrestling with my grandfather (great memories). I do remember this family but did not know the extent of their tragedies. I was in their age group and loved seeing them wrestle. All the ladies were in love with them. This movie moved me like Kramer vs. Kramer and Ordinary People. They took a very difficult issue, suicide, and helped the viewer through the highs and lows. Those of us who survived that time remember the expectations of our parents, who struggled to keep food on the table. Our grandparents suffered through the Great Depression. No one even discussed mental health back then. There was shame and family secrets. For me, it represented a time in history that hopefully made us more aware of mental health and family dynamics. This movie was amazing! As a Baby Boomer, I saw things that others may not have noticed… great job!! I hope they are nominated for the Oscars.

I thought this film was a interesting tale about the cautionary tale of toxic masculinity and intergenerational trauma of the working ideal traditional man who goes to great lengths to want to provide and better for his kids and inherently wanting them to follow in his footsteps due in part to the lost opportunities he couldn’t himself( although it can be imply his attitude as a stepping stone as to y it certainly didnt happen to him).
I thin people who are well-equipped about the story of the von Erich’s will highly be disappointed in this film as it does jump timelines to keep in line with the 2 hrs film but it doesn’t necessarily mean it does not capture integral elements of the brothers particularly Kevin himself.

Timeline was definitely off but I'm assuming run time blame. Director seemed like he liked the family and maybe shied away from some of the darker? details as well. And I don't blame him, it's tragic enough already. Anyway, I'm sorry, I know you didn't ask for any of that. But I agree, as a film it's beautiful.

The problem with this movie that I had is that I felt nothing about the brothers. None of their deaths (except mikes) made me feel like I lost a friend or a brother, I just felt like a character died and that’s a big problem in an autobiography like this.
I never read about the Von Eric’s and I went into this film blind. After the movie, I sat down and read their stories and I personally felt this movie was a MAJOR missed opportunity, not to mention the ill treatment of Chris by not including him in the movie, and it should’ve been a 6 episode mini series.
I thought everything about the movie was great from the direction, the sound design and the incredible performances (from Efron in particular), but the whole movie felt so rushed to me.
