  • If you’re even a casual wrestling fan, you’ve probably heard of the Curse of the Von Erich’s. One of the most infamous true wrestling tales, the Von Erich’s were a wrestling dynasty from Texas that were among the brightest stars in the business in the early eighties. There were five wrestling Von Erich brothers, Kevin, Kerry, David, Mike and Chris. They were the sons of Fritz Von Erich, himself a former villain turned baby face, who raised the boys to be champions. By the early 90s, four of the five brothers would be dead.
Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw is a riveting account of the rise and fall of this wrestling Dynasty. Unusually for us here on JoBlo Originals, we’re going to do two reviews of the film in this video - one for the more casual viewer, and another, from our resident wrestling die hard Travis Hopson. Check them out and see why we think this is one of the best movies of the year and maybe the best wrestling movie ever made.

They didn’t shy away from the truth? This movie is loosely based on the Von Erich’s at best. Kevin was nothing like the way he’s portrayed by Efron. The guy that played Fritz seems to be the only one who watched tapes to study character and mannerisms.

It certainly is a captivating film if you’re familiar with who they are it can be an emotional rollercoaster the movie can make you laugh, relate to the strong love/bond between the brothers, it can be exciting and also be so devastating bc of the outcome at the end. If you aren’t familiar with the von erichs i would still recommend the movie imo its good enough to captivate the casual viewer into wanting to learn more about the von erichs

My buddy’s mother was in love with him. She thought he looked like Val Kilmer in the face. Instead, they have a guy that looks like a beefed-up Elijah Wood. The film felted a bit rushed at times and there's so much more that could have added that really did happen. When Fritz Von Erich was dying of brain cancer, he pulled a gun on Kevin, saying, "You'd kill yourself too if you had the guts!". Kevin went to a very dark place too and stole a rifle from a gun store in Lubbock, Texas, hoping he would go to jail. The guys at the store recognized him and said, "We love you, Kevin!" and ended up not stealing the gun.

I saw this movie this past weekend but more importantly this is such a great video movie review. I had it on playing while i was doing work in the morning and was able to follow along while working - means the tone and presentation is stable and predictable. The topics you cover are more professional than the other movie review youtubers i follow(ed) - i stopped doing it because it was exhausting listening to what i thought was a dumbed down take on movies to increase reach and "engagement"
in a sense, your review doesn't take the audience's intelligence for granted and that's refreshing.
A couple of thoughts - firstly i didn't mind the changes to the plot from what happened. Movies are not a documentary and the changes they made really helped the movie stay integrated with its goal. There's a part in the movie where Kerry immediately gets himself injured when IRL it doesn't happen for some time. In other scenes, they treat the kayfabe aspect of wrestling like it's a shoot. Fritz talks to Kevin like he "has" to beat Ric Flair, as if the wrestling is real. Kevin iirc is the one that goes ham and gets himself DQ'd fighting Flair because he couldn't cope. These events never happened but was necessary for the character development. I thought it was innovative to blur the line between shoot and kayfabe.
while I wouldn't jump to a 10/10 i dunno where this movie falls in release schedule - i think it was actually released in late 2023 so hopefully it will be considered for awards. Also while I don't watch many wrestling dramas, I consider this somehow even better than Aronofsky's (The) Wrestler which upon introspection only touches upon one aspect of the effect professional wrestling has on its entertainers. The topic is grim and not for the faint of heart once you peel away the kayfabe and peer into the shoot. There's a market in that, and as long as producers and hollywood take us seriously, there's a wealth of stories.

I am very disappointed with the casting of Kerry Von Erich. He was my favorite Von Erich. I saw him live in person in the WWF as the Texas Tornado. He was a BIG dude. Very ripped. The actor portraying him does not do him justice in my opinion.

I can't speak on other parts of the country or the world but in Texas no family was loved more than the Von Erich's. If you were old enough to watch WCCW in the 80's then you know wut i'm talking about, hell even my grandma loved them❤❤❤ #VonErichFan4Life

I grew up in the Carolinas, so I was a Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling / World Championship Wrestling (WCW) so I didn’t get to watch a whole lot of WCCW but I remember on one of the ESPN channels world class was on there for a little while and of course I remember Kerry Because he went to the WWF for a while, and I never knew he was missing his foot that entire time, but I remember in the wrestling magazines when he died, and just how sad everybody was.
I guess if you grew up in the 80s and 90s, you knew this story so those of us that knew it it wasn’t as shocking to us but this was a great movie. It’s very interesting to sit back and watch reviews and reactions on CZcams to people that did not know the story, and just watch the shock on their faces as the story unfolds. I guess if you didn’t grow up and it’s just something you have known your whole life this is shocking, but this movie was done so well. I agree I think it is probably the greatest movie that touches the world of pro wrestling ever.

That fact that the family wasn't involved and that they wrote one of the brothers out is enough for me. They left in Lance who wasn't a real brother but eliminated a real brother. Crazy! Big slap in the families face. The actors are tiny compared to the real brothers. The most interesting thing is that Zac Efron rearranged his face with human growth hormones but claimed he broke his jaw on his counter.

The movie was good however, there were a few things that bothered me. One, Chris was never mentioned. I know he was the way younger than Kevin & Kerry, but he also wrestled and sadly killed himself too. They didn't delve into how tough on his son's Fritz was. Lastly, while Zac Efron is a good actor, he was way to buff to play Kevin. Plus Kevin has/had blond hair, Zac was in a dark wig.

I love this movie and it hit me so much harder than I expected it to. I went in with 0 expectations and was in complete awe of the performances, scores, and cinematography; its expertly crafted and needs to be seen by general audiences.
That ending got me so choked up that I very nearly cried, which is something I never do. When they say they don't make them like this anymore they are talking about movies like Iron Claw. Even if you aren't a fan of wrestling there are themes of trauma, loss, love, and family that anyone can connect with. And Zac Efron has officially proven that he is a phenomenonal talent that is underappreciated.

I grew up with World Class Wrestling and I had been to the Sportatorium to see a Von Erich match when I was a kid. My Brother and I would watch WCW in the hopes of seeing Kevin Von Erich and when he did show up, there was more hope that he'd use the Iron Claw. Then it seems as if Kevin just dropped off the map. I wasn't a big fan of David or Mike at that time. I did like Kerry, so I followed his career as much as possible and then he sadly passed away. Living in Dallas the rumors were ALL abuzz. David's death, from my Family's perspective, was that David was poisoned in Japan and Kerry and Mike were murdered to make way for other contenders. I didn't know what to believe. All I knew was that they weren't around to watch anymore and that's when I quit being interested in Wrestling.
I just saw this movie last night and it was incredible. I did find it odd that they opted to mix Mike and Chris's character together as one for narrative purposes, but I guess it worked out ok. There was one interesting scene towards the end that if I were to meet the director, I would ask him about it. After Kerry dies and his soul awakens and gets on the boat, he leaves behind the coin that was tossed by the Father to see who would take David's place in the Heavy Weight Champion bout. This could mean that the coin was payment for the "Ferryman" for crossing the river. Or it could mean that the coin toss was the pivotal moment for Kerry because if it had gone to Kevin, things might have turned out different for everyone. I am curious if he meant it as both or one or the other.
