Standing Pilates for Seniors- 30 minutes of exercise to Improve Strength & Build Confidence

  • Join me for a 30 Minute standing pilates workout for Seniors 60+. What I have done is put together some exercises for the general aches & pains in the joints and spine that come with age. As well as some other exercises to help combat loss of strength, coordination and balance that also comes with age, but and this is important It doesn't have to be that way! Doing these exercises regularly will improve all these things so I am recommending you build up to doing this workout at least twice a week. I've taught these exercises twice weekly to my Senior clients in London, they are ages 60- 83. Take your time and do what you can, if anything is too challenging for you right now, don't worry, just rest and come back and try again when you're ready. Take care of yourselves.

    I am not a senior. But I did have brain surgery after getting COVID. My balance was greatly compromised as well as being so weak from the surgery and all the time in the hospital recovering. This video helped me very much. I was able to build my strength and my balance up after finally coming home. Almost a year later, I am back to my pre-surgery balance. Thank you so much!

      It take courage to get back on track, I have been true a hole bunch of surgeries and Chimo therapy I was allergic to the 2 first doses of chemo it attack my hart the next 6 month of chemo went well,, surgeries removal some bowels, left knee surgeries and right hips 2 years later so the 3 years was rough I never been to hospital before. Now I am doing well I started Pilates 3 weeks ago for balance and exercise for knee on chair, I am doing better every day. Thank yous so mush for those Pilates sessions Have a wonderful week

      My goodness girl….. I just found this site this morning. As I started to listen I caught your comment below and immediately stopped the video to read your story. Wow! Covid for some of us was a serious health risk but it didn’t impact us too much. I’m in Montana close to Missoula. So sorry this happened to you.     Just turned 80 and had a total hip replacement in October....was not moving for over a year. Started doing these exercises about two weeks ago and I am feeling sore but much better. Keep me motivated...too easy to sit down and forget it. Thank you for your easy pace and lovely voice....no one yelling at me!

    Am a 74 yr old Indian housewife from Bengal. Have Osteoporosis since many years . As a result fell down and broke my femur four years ago. After surgery , physiotherapy and excercises am doing fine. Liking and feeling comfortable with your gentle excercises. Thanks.

    Thank you for filming the standing Pilates routines for seniors! I've been doing them for two weeks and already have strengthened my ankles and improved my balance. Don't laugh but I was looking for help with balance on my horse. I though what better way then a standing routine that includes strengthening the ankles, knees and hips with the added bonus of balancing. A must try for all equestrians!

    Thank you so much Rachel from Dublin I am a front line worker waiting for knee replacement I started doing your excercises for seniors preop knee replacement there are no Pilates for seniors I have much better range of movement and less pain I might not even need the knee replacement now I have told all my senior colleagues who find your Pilates for seniors the best on you tube if you have any chair arm excercises for seniors we would be most grateful I also put your videos on for my patients who love them thank you so much Rachel exhausted health care worker 😊😊

    Just discovered this video. I'm not ur target audience, as 'only' 52, but I have fibromyalgia and get very stiff and tired. I have been doing pilates once a week for a couple of years and it really helps. This session is well within my comfort zone, not too strenuous, not too long and it really helps mobilise my stiff spine. Thank you.

Really pleased to hear it worked for you even though you're a youngster 😉 I made the Senior Sessions to help anyone Senior or younger who just wnats to work at a slower more steady pace with less intensity. I onthe young side too at 56 but rather enjoy these sessions as they always feel like a treat to the body. So glad it's helping you manage your condition. Keep up the great work 😊

    Did not work out for nearly 3 weeks taking care of my dog. Went to a yoga class last nite and everything HURT. Today, back to my loved Pilates and chose this video. Were things tight - oh yes, but worked gently thru it. This was the absolute right thing to do.. my gratitude 🙏🏽

    I can't believe I found this! I was just talking to my physical therapist about wishing I could find Pilates without having to get onto the floor. I'm 65 and used to do regular Pilates, and have missed it so much! So grateful to you!!!
    *People might want to keep something like a chair handy, or do the exercises near a wall, in case they lose their balance.* Also, those with arthritis in their back need to consult their rheumatologist before doing forward bends. I was told to avoid those. Back extension is okay, but not back flexion, as flexion puts pressure on the discs.

      Hello and thank you for your message, So glad you enjoy the workout and my standing Pilates exercises. Good point on keeping a chair handy, and yes do avoid flexion if you have been told to do so. I have included it as I don't find it an issue with general arthritis but you must avoid flexion if you have osteoporosis as flexion can cause stress fractures in the spine. I do have other videos without flexion if that's what's needed. Back extension is excellent and it's something we should all be doing more of in these days of technology. With best wishes, Rachel

      Thank you for your kind words. I taught apparatus classes before the lockdown but have moved online and my clients now do mat work classes from home. The standing workouts work really well for those who find floor work difficult.

    Hi Rachel! I am almost 80 and used to go regularly to a Pilates class which shut down just before Covid. Am terribly unfit and have started to feel my age.     So glad I found you. I am 65 and coming to realize some of my old workouts are too intense. That you for having classes that are good but less taxing on our bodies. with covid-19 around I don't have the gym to go to so these classes are very much appreciated.

    I’m thrilled to have found you. I’m only mid-50s but suddenly, I felt like I was becoming an atrophied blob and losing muscle quickly. This was perfect for me - just enough to feel challenged, but not so difficult or exhausting that I was discouraged. This will become part of my daily routine and hopefully I can graduate to more challenging videos. Thank you.

      I just want to loudly echo everything Lori said (hi, Lori).
      I took my first pilates class last Sunday and I liked it, except for I realized I have no balance and my range of motion is not what it was 25 years ago. So I was very happy to find this gem. Thank you! I plan to so it every morning and maybe even get my husband to try it.

    Not a senior, but I’ve got chronic fatigue. I used to HIIT, body weight strength train, and cycle a few hundred kilometres every summer. I haven’t been able to exercise for a few years, but I’m going to try this kind of Pilates twice a week. This one was almost too much but I kept moving without pushing myself. Thank you for planning easy and gentle exercises.

    I just came across this video for us seniors😊! I've just turned 72 on this 1rst of July... I did lots of sports during my youth, yoga in my middle age.... but have been quite lazy since covid...       Hi! I'm 67 and have Parkinson's. I can't seem to stick with any exercise b/c I get stiffer and get more pain the next day. I just tried this and I made it to 11 min. I will try to do some again later. Hopefully I will be able to stick to this. :)

    Hello Rachel, I'm new to your channel but just wanted to say how glad I am to have found you! I'm 55, not quite a 'senior' yet but due to putting on menopause weight, plus a disability, I'm now rather unfit with stiff & achy joints. I have started doing your standing pilates for seniors and the chair-based workout for painful knees and am already feeling the benefits after just a few weeks.
    I love your teaching style- you explain everything so well, and are so encouraging, and I really appreciate that you have many classes for all sorts of injuries and conditions because sometimes even 'normal' beginners classes are not completely suitable for those of us with physical challenges.     From Mrs Rod. My physio told me about your videos, as I have rheumatoid arthritis just about everywhere, ok everywhere to be truthful. Not done any exercise for a few years due to total knee replacement but I am hooked. No having to get up and down floor is great (impossible for me) and I think I may have found my stomach muscle again, they disappeared when I had stomach surgery. Thank you so so much . P.S. nearly 60, couple of years to go yet but I ready feel younger

    I lost a lot of myself caring for my husband (Alzheimer's) and haven't been able to drum up enthusiasm for routine exercise. I happened upon this video and decided to give it a try this evening. I love it and have it bookmarked to do again tomorrow. Thank you!

      Gosh you are a good person, taking care of someone you love who has Alzheimer’s is one of the most difficult things to do. Great that you are trying to take care of yourself...that is so important! 😇

    Love this workout for senior stretching; the only difficulty I had was tuning the toes and knees out; my knees didn't like that. Love pilates and I will be back. Thank you.

    I am 72 years old and have COPD. I wanted something besides breathing exercises to help me with renewed energy and balance. I was so excited after doing these for the first time yesterday.     I have just started Pilates at the age of 79. I go to one class a week and use your videos for the over 60s as much as possible. I appreciate the effort you have put into making these exercises for us oldies. I have weakness on my left side so stand near a support just in case. Thank you Rachael.

    Those exercises for stiff shoulders are what I need. Like a lot of people today I spend time o. A PC or laptop and I feel so stiff in my shoulders. Plus the gentle pace and recognition that our bodies need that in the later years. Thank you Rachel.

    I’m not a senior but after some injury to my hip/core about I struggle with my balance and core strength. This has been such an excellent step back into the fitness world. I feel so much better already.

    Hello Rachel, I did your standing Pilates for seniors, I never realized how out of balance till I did this. I'm not going to lie, my body is stimulated just for doing this once. Thank you for sharing this. I also want to request more of the back pain it's my weakest part, aside from having bad balance.     Wow, I'm in my 50s but have arthritis in the feet and am getting ever stiffer all over the body all the time. Just found this video by chance and gave it a try - and it's great!     LOVE THIS, and Shared. I am 65 and suffering terribly with pain (left hip and groin) loss of my ROM , and weight issues.
