Confessional time: I set up a VM server on my laptop, configured 3389 port forwarding on my home router and set up a demo for remote desktop protocol for a class and gave my server a username of "user" and a password if "password". A few days later the server manager was uninstalled an ip scanner was installed on the vm and a Russion version of Firefox was installed on it. I was foolish, I know😔. I disabled the port forwarding, shut the VM down and ran Window scan on everything. If my home network got targeted and attacked, any network can be targeted. Use complex passwords and configure remote desktop protocol on a random, less targeted port.
Rule of thumb here is not a problem with the port you used. It’s indeed in the fact that you port forwarded to begin with. During NAT if you have a port that forwards to your internal resources directly from the internet instead of through an appliance with proper ACLs. You don’t need to over expose at the network layer to get services trough the internet. Is better to use agents based connection services instead of leveraging direct network layer protocols.
