You're Ed Welch's grandson? If you brought back the original 'BlockBusters', what would you change? Me? I'd add a Teen Tournament, a College Championship, a special episode to mark Bob Holness' birthday by using questions that were in the show when he hosted it, and a Tournament of Champions.

This brought a lump to my throat. Bob Holness was amazing. No-one else could fill his shoes as Blockbusters presenter. So glad to see the audience, contestants and studio crew join in the actions with such enthusiasm, showing how much they loved the programme and giving Bob the tribute he deserved.

    To clear up any confusion:
There are four (soon to be five?) versions of "Quiz Wizard" by Ed Welch.
    1) - This, commercially released version, available on 45inch single (that's like a large black CD for you younger folk) - released on Grasmere records, catalogue number GRASS 2
    2) - The original, 1983 theme used for the original ITV version - later series used a speeded up / higher key, but it is the same tune.
    continued....

Whoever put the imagery together of all that archive through the years in that exact order to the full theme is a genius, the whole thing was just perfect very powerful and, quite touching especially for all of us who grew up during that era. Priceless memories!

In the United States, Blockbusters had just two short runs: 1980-82, and again in 1987, but each had a different theme tune, and it saddens me to say it, but they don't stack up to the quality and beauty of this one. Of all themes, this one is THE Blockbusters theme.
Next year will also mark 10 years since Bob Holness died; I hope the UK does more special tributes to that man.

Opening and closing credit themes are often just that, there is no "suite" or full theme recorded as there is no point. As far as I am aware the original and later TV BB themes were recorded like this. Ed Welch (The Legend himself) recorded a single version of the theme in the early 90s which is the only full version of the theme as far as I know. This is availbale on single.

@tomatzu I've watched some of the clips on here, and it looks like a few different versions of the theme were used. I do have the original opening and closing themes used in 1983 - the closing theme sounded a little different by 1986 (see' the first hand jive' video). This full-length version bears the most resemblance to the late 80s version, with the updated opening titles, but by 1992 ( see 'the final episode' video) it sounded slighly different again!

If I were to bring back 'Blockbusters', I would make JD Roth the host and Veronica Taylor the announcer (using her Ash Ketchum voice). I'd also add a tribute show to mark Bob Holness' birthday by giving contestants questions that were in the British version. I'd also add a Tournament of Champions where the winner would win $1,500,000.

  • @tomatzu

Nice to hear the full version of this theme, but it doesn't sound like the version used for the opening and closing credits to the actual show. I think this played when Bob spoke of a previous Big Prize winner during the show right?
Do you actually have the full-length version of the music used for the opening and closing credits? Same tune, just different instruments used altogether. Thanks for uploading this all the same.

There are, I think, 6 versions of Quiz Wizard.
    1) This one, which was released as a 7" vinyl single on Grasmere Records, which I own and I believe this video came about as a result of me uploading said version to TVF.
    2) The original TV version
    3) An updated TV version, which is identical apart from being slightly pacier and in a higher key.
    4) The re-recorded version used for the original Sky1 version
    5) The 2000 Sky1 version
    6) The London Symphony Orchestra version
    7) The new Challenge version
