- TOP 10 THINGS WISHED I KNEW | location, holiday shifts, toe injury, picking cases, breakfast breaks
Don't be like me that didn't do research and found it the worst way dealing with things I wished I asked about. I'm usually an overthinker but it didn't occur to me the things that I actually had to do. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret it but I could have easily prepared myself. Like I said, sometimes the best way to learn things is to just do it without expectations. If you make a mistake, good. If you don't, keep going.
I wouldn't trade my training for the world but I wishedddddd I got into some specialties that I didn't get to do. But no worries, once you find out which specialty you're good at, you'll know how to progress. I just don't want you to quit just cause one facility isn't perfect. No such thing but if you do find that, you're gonna be soooo lucky! ❤️❤️
As always, don't limit yourself. Don't say no to complex, hard cases. It'll help you in the future!
GOODLUCK FUTURE ST!

Thank you Ma’am. Im going to start my studies next year. Best luck to me and to all aspirants out there 😉
Best of luck to you and other aspirants.
i’m so thankful i found your channel! i’m applying to a ST program in March & hopefully i’ll be starting this fall. you are such an inspiration; thank you thank you!🙌🏽
Yasssss girl go get it!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
In March I'm going to petition for the ST program in Wisconsin. Thank you for being transparent.
Why what's going on? What are you protesting about? Just curious.
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK it's not a protest. Petition is when they have limited seats for a program and you have to fill out paperwork and do a background check. It's an acceptance into the official program after all of the pre reqs are completed.
@@__IamJazzmin ohhhh I always thought petition is for something bad that they're doing lol
Just signed up for school and so nervous and happy at the same time lol
It's normal! Lol it's all new!
Thank you for this video!
I’m debating between surgical tech or ultra sound but for some reason surgical sounds more interesting also less math in school 👌🏼👌🏼
Hahah yes only algebra!!!!
Thanks for the videos
Great channel! I subscribed and followed you on IG. Plan on taking on a career as a surgical tech
Great videos! Was signed up for a sketchy NCCT program, which I didn’t know wasn’t as good as a program that is accredited and you can get the NBSTSA. Dropped that Surg tech program and now signed up to start in 8 8 months. Definitely be buying your booklet soon. Thanks as a CMA for years whose bored of the job and need more of a challenge. CT surgeon goals.
8 months.
The new program ur in, is it a degree or a cert?
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK Degree programs, but I already have my bachelor’s. Just want to get some OR experience to help my medical school application in 2-3yrs.
@@dragonkin0043 so what exactly are you gonna get after the schooling? I have an A.s deg with cert.
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK I’ll get the A.S. as well.
I stress about the Orthopedic vendors with tibial trials, acetabular reamers, drill guides, cannulas, implants, and gauges.
The Scrub Tech at my Medical Center says the vendor comes in to set up and pull the pieces out the doctor wants specifically from the Zimmer/Stryker sets.
Yes they do. The reps tells us how to set it up. They know the surgeons preference than I do. They don't actually scrub in for the record, they just point and help us get started.
It is true about the mesh shoes... However, I have sprayed my shoes with Blue62 (awsome product used on decon). Then I washed them with detergent... Problem solved!
Too much work
The having to work on holidays really saddens me, i'm in school for this and that's my biggest downside. Are there facilities that dont do call on holidays? When you are on call how often is it that you do get called in?
Depends on each facility. OB has no calls. But all medical Healthcare jobs requires holiday
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK how much holiday?
Do you know the pieces for Muzuho Head Frame trauma? I couldn’t tell ya.
We follow the picture and print a charge sheet and not a count sheet for that set
ENT’s are the sets all the techs avoid lol
I hate ent lol.
Thank you so much for the job you are doing with these videos. However, in one of your videos you said one can choose area of specialization during clinical with orthopedic as the highest paid, followed by cardiovascular and Neuro spine. Here, you saying they hospital can throw you into any case not minding your area of specialization. I think that’s contradictory. More so, I believe one starting off as a sterile processing technician will enable you learn most instruments use in ortho, Neuro, ortho spine, cardiovascular, cath lab, urology, general, ENT, plastics, and any cases. Also, the instrument you called a “big Kelly” I believe is “sarrot “. Conclusively, thank you for the videos, they are really encouraging and educative. I can see I would do better in this field henceforth.
In clinicals u cannot pick ur cases so it's best to do anything but if u wanna make ur resume strong, when you get your job, you can tell ur charge nurse to put u in a lot of ortho. They may or may not say yes or no but during my training I was in ortho for 3 months! I did not pick to be there but apparently everyone new had to do 3 months of ortho. CV is a team unless you scrub with the CV guy during AAAs and get to know them they might give u a chance. I was given thr chance cause i did a lot of shunts. For neuro, they also have a team and same strategy like ortho. Nothing is set in stone Victor. If you got what it takes, you ask for it. And no my school did not start us with SPD, I don't recommend it as ur first job. I called it hig Kelly because that's what the surgeon calls it. These surgeons don't know some of the names.
Lol also u can't go to ur first job and tell em, oh I only wanna do general lol uhm they will laugh at u 😆. Unless you are hired specifically CV SCRUB then yes sir, you will be thrown to any cases. I specialized in CV but idc where they put me because Im exposed to all. And no idk all the instruments, I don't think anyone straight off school will know and thats ok. Even the experts don't know all the instruments. If you can do better, please make videos about it so others have more resources.
Hello, can you please share shoe recommendations for OR? Thanks 😊
Danskos. See my ig post :)
But dansko are clogs, so are those still okay?
I know this varies state to state but anyone have an idea on surgical tech starting pay with a associates degree?? Starting clinicals and generally curious
Depends on the state. I believe 24 in CA. 19 in FL. 27 in WA. These are just average. I actually have a video about this.
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK yeah, I've seen that FL is typically starting $19-20. That's ridiculous how little they value their techs. You can just work at Amazon or Target for equal or better pay.
@@Dee-jp6no yeah that's why i don't recommend staying at a job for more than 1 year. Go travel and get money 💰
What type of shoes do you have
I have the danskos
When do you have to learn ENT sets?
Depends on the facility if they do them alot. Mine does it 3x a year lol. I did one blepharoplasty in 7 years
What’s the name of ur compression socks
I use any from amazon.
Alm Retractor??? lol easy peazy we learned that in school for sterile processingz
Badically an eye retractor and it was cute so it stood out.
Try learning Arthrex shit little sickle knifes for Major Ear sets. Forget it.
Also the weird shoulder retractors are labeled and for dr specialty to dumb it down for us techs. I am pissed because I wanna learn them the hard way for surgical tech.
I didn't get sterile processing rotation lol
Do you have any ambition to be more involved with the body such as suturing? RNFA? Scrub Nurse? PA? or you being Scrub tech?
Pa is my next goal.
Kat, do you have an insta to contact you? 🙏
Yes surgicaltechgeek on ig
