End his life with the move taught to you by the person who would have helped him find a new purpose in life while simultaneously making it so that Sheo bears the (albeit unknown) guilt of having taught you the move that went on to kill his would be companion.

On my first playthrough i killed him without much of a second thought. When i learned that not only could he be spared, *he'd go on to have a adorable relationship* with one of the swordmasters i proceeded to lose my shit. I abandoned that playthrough immediately (48hrs i think?) and started the second one, my current run, while just feeling nothing but intense regret.
I didnt know there was a nailsmith till i reached the secret boss in the city waterfalls and saw how impossible was to kill it, so i googled for the boss and realized i needed a better nail somewhere
If you don't kill him, you'll find him modeling for the paintmaster. He'll then thank you for not killing him. Edit: forgot to mention that they're a couple :)

To be fair, if I recall correctly, spell damage is based off of nail damage, so it's safe to assume that the nail is used in some way during casting. So in a way, you did kill him with your nail, just not the intended way.

If it does say “pure” after using soul magic to game-end Nailsmith, it’s probably b/c he’s never seen a Pure Nail in use, and since he has his eyes closed the entire time, most likely he just feels the new sensation of soul magic damage and is like “dang this do feel pure doe”.

It automatically saves after doing major things, such as killing a dreamer. Even if you reloaded the file nailsmith still would be dead :(
