The problem is that even if you have a warranty, the headache of sending a car to the shop and getting it back is really annoying. I’m surprised high end car owners put up with it
The rich people will just get someone else to take it to the shop.

Doug using the CGT as a table for cookies is so real
That’s one expensive table
I'm convinced it's the same stack of cookies since the beginning
Does Doug ever share the cookies, is my question
Curious if he voided his warranty by consistently stacking them on his CGT
I hope he adds a cookie per vid so eventually there's stacks of em behind him.
This is where Kennan truly shines. Just having a friendly conversation about cars. Keep it up, guys 👍👍👍
The real question is, does Doug actually eat those cookies, and why always chocolate chip?
Yes he does eat his cookies.
Cause he’s on a chocolate chips trip
Why chocolate chip?? Because chocolate chip is superior in every way.
I finally saw him eat one. I payed more attention to the cookies the last two videos than him.
He eats one at 17:50
12:55, the maintenance cost on a F1 Mclaren with it just sitting in a garage with all of the timed repairs (fuel tank, tyres, belts, plugs, etc) was estimated to be over $100,000 a year. Despite that, it is a 17 million dollar car
as a percentage its probably better than the average car
If I could afford it, I would.
It's a McClaren F1
They are way over 17 mil these days.
Realistically if you’ve got 17 million to fork out 100k is basically a rounding error in your finances.
The Ford GT sitting in the other garage..."Did you forget about me, Daddy Doug?"
When Doug said “one can dream” about the Lagonda, I thought about the two GTs he was sandwiched between
You guys have incredible chemistry together. I felt like you all were so enthralled with shared experiences that you forgot all about the audience LOL
I would love a version of this with cars where an upgrade fixes the reliability
While it is nowhere near as exclusive and expensive, if RX-8's were reliable they would cost at least double. Such a fun car to drive and experience. Not fast in a straight line but delightful balance in the corners.
I was gonna say! I’m surprised there were no Mazda Rotaries mentioned!

Don't mention the cookies. If you mention the cookies, you're newly maintained/repaired finicky car will most certainly breakdown on you today. You'll need that AA Yellow recovery vehicle to come collect you and your money-pit. So whatever you do… Don't Mention the Cookies!
I once bought a car from a used car dealer that blew up leaving the lot! The guy didn't want to take it back, but that attitude didn't last too long...
What did you do and how long did you have to serve for it?
I ran a Land Rover service department during the era you reference, and, yea.....they are basically (usually) mobile dumpster fires.
But, the reliability issue is very fixable: buy 4 of them, and work out an arrangement with the repair shop to just leave one parked there. This improves your chances of driving a Landy with confidence is merely comical.....
The E60 M5 is perfect for people who like working on their cars. It's a niche car in that sense, you have to be technical enough to do the maintenance yourself AND do stuff like pirate and understand ISTA, but it's a great car otherwise. I've put 25k on mine since I bought it 2 1/2 years ago, I drive it like it's supposed to be driven, and when you do that all the little issues work their way to the surface so you can really get ahead of it. I love it, I bought it for 12K in the height of the used car depression during the covid hysteria, and I've got another 12 in it. But that's me working on it most of the time.
That's encouraging.
Its alot like owning a 2nd gen mini...fun when it works but atleast once a month your fixing something.
I have had my E60 M5 for 7 years now, 1 owner car bought from BMW Park Lane with 35K miles...it's now on 85K and it's only been a weekend car.
More importantly as I bought it as a BMW Approved car and to this day I still have a BMW warranty on it.
It's got a custom genuine Akrapovic exhaust, Eventuri carbon intakes and a prototype Eventuri full carbon plenum...it is absolutely unreal to drive and knowing I have a warranty gives me so much piece of mind as I can enjoy the car as it was intended with zero compromises.
In many ways (sound especially) I love it more than my Lamborghini Huracan as that V10 whilst being incredible just doesn't have that banshee-like F1 scream despite having a higher redline.
An absolute legend of a car and easily the best M5 ever and one of the best cars of all time. A true 4 door supercar.
More than a warranty, what I feel is absolutely necessary to own these types of affordable collectables is a well-documented repair manual. And I don't mean the "subscription" stuff available today, but a real hardcopy, or at least a PDF equivalent. That'd go a long way to making these types of cars more attainable and realistic.
I have a manual e60 m5 with 144k miles on it. Rod beatings changed. I think the trick is, just drive it! Drive it hard. It’s been a really reliable car for me. Just do preventative maintenance. For me. It was fuel injectors, fuel pump, rod bearings. That’s it. It’s been a really reliable car for me personally.
I actually am with Doug on that last question. I think enthusiasts like to see people keep cars going, even if they’re not special. Seeing anything car on the road for longer than the manufacturer ever intended is always a cool thing to see. So when you couple that with a car that you KNOW is a total PITA to keep going, you respect it that labor of love so much more. And in a weird way, when those cars are actually working correctly, you root for it. I have an older Ferrari, and while it’s a fairly reliable car, you are always worried in the back of your mind “what’s going to happen next, and how much is it going to cost me?” But I work on it myself, and when things go wrong, I solve the problem, and it’s rewarding. And when nothing goes wrong on a drive, you’re proud that your repairs all worked. I think when your car has bad days, it feels more human and less like a product. And for some of us, maintaining the car (or the relationship with it) is part of the fun. Another way to think about it is if you don’t have to work to keep a car going, then it’s just becomes a boring product. But when you have to keep working at a car even after owning it, the chase for “owning it” never ends. It’s like the car can break up with you any minute… In other words, sometimes toxic relationships are the most exciting ones to have. Lol
My favourite car in this category will be Lotus Esprit. I love all the generations of Esprit from the S1 of James Bond Submarine to the S4 with V8 TT.
The Jaguar XJ12C was arguably the most beautiful coupe ever made and many didn't make it home from the dealership. Notorious.
I still want one. Even though a warranty isn't possible, and LS Swap certainly is. Fragility problem SOLVED, plus bonus supercar performance!
Any older Jag pretty much. I bet the F Type will be on lists like this in 20-30 years
Any older Jag pretty much. I bet the F Type will be on lists like this in 20-30 years
I’d cut that in half to 10 to 15 years. 07 Jaguar XK owner here with a zillion issues.
I had a XJ6C and it was absolutely beautiful and a memory maker. After six years of ownership it was time to sell it... To a NYU doctor. Years later I bought an early xkr coupe and too enjoyed it, but knew three years of ownership would be enough.
I owned an XJ12C in period. Pleasure to drive. With proper maintenance by a qualified Jaguar tech, it really wasn't a bad experience.
I had a girlfriend whose dad bought her a P38 Range Rover for like $3k in 2016 and she and her friends decided it was a good idea to drive it from Salt Lake City to Moab, Utah in the middle of July. I warned them that it may in fact catch on fire and they all laughed at me. It caught on fire less than halfway through the 4 hour trek 😂
I haven’t heard that 5:50 Evil Doug Laugh since the good old Hummer H1 driving over things days 😂 ITS BEEN YEARS! Haha
This made me think that a live version with additional edited version uploaded later too, WITH an AUDIENCE like a car meet, cars and coffee or something like that, would be AWESOME!
Something to thing about while you experiment with the channel.
This is why i love corvettes so much. Cheap (compared to others), easy to maintain, and reliable.
As much as I love chevrolet corvettes r junk. They take a pickup truck motor stick it on a car and call it a day. The camaro is so much better u get what u expect. I had a corvette zl1 and aint no reason a 2006 charger rt hauling a family of 4 inside and groceries should of been able to outrun it. Not just a little but by a mile. That's why I drive a charger now. I jave a antique iroc put up I've had for almost 20 years
I always thought the Maserati Granturismo was the most beautiful car ever, even better than the DB9.
Now I am at a point in life where I could afford one of the two if I wanted, however I'm now also wise to know why I wouldn't.
For me it’s a VW Passat wagon w8 manual. I would do unspeakable things for that car with a warranty. It’s such a stupid car but also so cool and so rare, I love them so much
Yes! Just… just… YES!!!
I had a 1998 1.8T 5-speed manual sedan in Fjord Blue and it was just heaven. I kept that car for 19 years and loved every moment I spent driving it. I miss that beautiful blue piece of sculpted brilliance every single day!
I mean... nowadays if you bought about 5 of them and sorted them, you could probably get them sorted for 100k$ in total including purchase price. Ad they are so common with other B5s - all the parts outside the engine are pretty common and not that expensive.
Doug’s point at the end about the unreliability of classic supercars being part of the mystique is spot on. There is absolutely something to be said for people who use those cars as intended and without fear. Its like when you see a super limited production car being driven hard on track or doing burnouts, not kept in a garage for investment. Alfa Romeos and classic Ferraris are the best examples of this. Those cars are beloved because they take so much time and effort to keep going. You bong with them through the struggles and failures. Its why no one looks at Porsche as a brand of passion, but precision. Porsches don’t break down, won’t have you mad at them, won’t lash out at you. But in that they lack a degree of passion that Italian cars have. Theres no reward in taming a mild beast
I have to agree with you and Doug, it’s a rich man’s flex so most wouldn’t get it. Those who know how nightmarishly expensive and frustrating owning a Ferrari Daytona is are over the moon when someone is out driving like it’s nothing.
I was looking for this exact comment. Thank you
Porsche's are clinical and precise but to those of us who have owned really finicky sports cars in the past, it's highly preferred to have car that you can enjoy without fear anytime you want. That's why manual 911's will always be in my garage and I have zero interest in Ferrari even though I could afford one. Not even on my radar.
Honestly I do not agree with that, especially the "Those cars are beloved because they take so much time and effort to keep going." part. I think it is really wrong, those cars are beloved because they are great cars to drive or look at. I don't think that any of the owners of those cars would tell you they are happy about them not being reliable.
On the other hand, this unreliability is what makes those cars so RARE - because no one really want to cope with them, or drive them because they are afraid.
So the unreliability in some sense makes the car more special because it makes it more rare, but by no means more enjoyable to own. If you own them, for sure reliability is not something you are happy with.
The failure points of classic supercars were mechanical. If something went wrong you could disassemble it and see the problem. In supercars of the last 20-30 years, they still have mechanical failures just as much as before - it is a machine after all - but now we have a whole new set of failure points, computer and electronics - much of which is "black box", which means if it goes wrong you have no hope of fixing it - you have to find another unit. And getting any sort of transmission other than a manual (especially any sort of sequential gearbox) will double or triple your problems. Sequential gearboxes were the worst possible idea ever to hit the road. Sure, they are great in F1 racing when it will gain you a second or two per lap, but we aren't racing at Monaco, are we? This is why a 1970s Ferrari Daytona will always be worth more than a 599. You can keep the Daytona running forever if you have a good mechanic. The 599, one day, will have a critical part failure with no replacements available which will relegate the car to a nice lawn ornament. 100 years from now, in 2123, you will still have some exotics from the 20th century still drivable, and nothing from the 21st century.

Great talk, great video. I agree with Kennan that most of the people have no idea about problems mentioned (super) cars might have.
I agree that the first gen NSX is a car you buy when you want to use it outside of warranty. (Disclaimer: I own one, have driven it across the country repeatedly, and would do so again in a heartbeat.) Go get one, Kennan! Now you guys need to do a video of cars you’d keep outside of warranty 🤣
I love the first gen NSX. I’m kind of want one because they’re so reliable. I can enjoy it and not have to worry too much about something breaking or going wrong.

These have become my favorite videos. I listen to them when I’m on a drive and it makes the time go quickly.
We need a series of Doug EV-swapping his favorite unreliable cars. Afterall now he can afford it and the swaps aren't even that crazy money considering how reliable they get afterwards in comparison.
Wouldn't do EV swap, maybe a reliable engine/transmission swap. EV's are useless where I live.
I really like your newer videos with Keenan Doug. It's nice to see you both discussing cars, you both certainly know your stuff. I do prefer your regular content, but adding the extra videos with Keenan is a good thing in my opinion :)
Just did a 1600km (1000 mile) journey to visit a friend in the Snowy Mountains in Australia. We were going to take the modern Santa Fe, but our mechanic said the tyres were not the best (and on potentially icy roads) . Couldn't get new tyres on with a day's notice, so we jumped in the 1995 80 Series LandCruiser, didn't skip a beat.

Definitely get the NSX. I forget how good they are, then I drive mine again and fall in love again... every time. But, to Doug's point, they are kind of "too good", maybe even "boring", which somehow makes it less of an experience when I use it. But there is definitely something nice to having a reliable, beautiful car in the garage.
Can you do like a video with your favorite model from every car brand? Also maybe with orphan brands like Eagle or Pontiac
Eagle? As in the AMC Eagle? I thought that was the coolest "hatchback" (or was it labeled as a wagon) ever at the time it was being sold as new. It stood nice & tall and could easily tame the then snowy Chicago winters.
@@thomashrubecky1663 that would be AMC, I thought more of like the Eagle Talon, Vision or Premier

I would love to do a Bentley Arnage T full resto-mod and pop an LS motor in there . BUT, aside from the motor/drivetrain, it would be all updated Bentley style. I absolutely love the look and feel of that car. 👍🏻😎👍🏻
I'd like to do that to an 80s Mulsanne. Modern V8 and air suspension to solve the car's two maintenance headaches but keep everything else the same.
LS swapping that area of Bentley/Rolls Royce ain't that difficult. If i remember correctly the transmission is already a GM unit. 5.3 LS just bolts up.
Kennan is a great addition to the channel
I definitely agree with Doug at the end. There are certain cars that do have more of a mystical aura because of their unreliability. But this only shows through when we see immaculate examples that are well used despite their problems, because that tells us that whoever owns these cars is extremely dedicated and has the money to keep them running. And that is something that's attainable for very few people and even then it doesn't happen very often, making that experience something special.
My dad used to have a bentley arnage and his was not unreliable. It was well looked after and came with a full bentley history. The cost of replacing anything was insane though. Thankfully we owned our own 2nd hand car dealership and did repairs so we did our own work. My Maserati 4200 was super unreliable. Within the first 3 months it needed a new clutch. Thankfully in the UK you can buy warrenty on 2nd hand cars. This proved useful with the maserati.
I actually agree with Doug's point that some of those car's unreliability makes them more special. Because of that, they're rare and when we actually see 355s and e60s in the wild it's because someone is crazy and stupid enough to put up with the maintenance. Personally, those cars will always be unobtainable but so cool!
Agreed. I get excited when I see something rare -- equally excited whether that rarity is because only a few were made or because only a few run.
I'm obsessed with these kind of videos idk why

Those are a lot of the obvious ones, but I was thinking a bit more obscure, like Toyota powered Lotus cars.
My P38 must have been built on a Tuesday, as it's been reliable for 150k miles. It's experienced well-known issues, like air suspension failures (replaced twice under warranty!), and the heater control valve, but it's surprisingly easy to maintain if one has a little mechanical ability, and its issues and repairs are well documented online. As long as I drive mine and keep the battery healthy, it takes care of me. Mostly!
Mine’s reliable too. Their reputation is much worse than reality.
I love that Doug is casually eating cookies during his segment! 😂💯
My step-dad owned a 2007 E60 M5 Manual, custom ordered. That car was such a pleasure to drive, but man it had issues; he used the living crap out of the warranty. He missed getting an extended warranty by a few days, and he paid the price. After 15k in fixes in a single year, he sold it and got an M4, and vowed to never own a BMW without a warranty again.
E60 M5 is the number one vehicle that should be on this list
These are by far my favorite vids on the channel
If you can find one, Overfinch Range Rovers are LS swapped with some other goodies for more power and reliability.
They did a lot of suspension/handling work as well which made them handle incredibly well at the time, incredibly desirable now, I have a friend who used to have a whine Red Range Rover classic that was modified by Overfinch, amazing machine.
Douge, please share your cookies with kennan and Alanis 😊 I love too see them.
The original Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI... the engine barely fits in the engine compartment, needed a special engine lift to fix, most Voks mechanics wouldn't touch it. They are actually fairly reliable, but when something goes wrong, or you just need maintenance, $$$ look out.
My 355 is the most reliable car I have(the rest are more modern and German). When I bought it, I did the heads and everything else while the engine was out. They typically do not implode like an e90 m3, 996, or 997(use both 997.1&997.2-bore scoring).
Love this podcast!
E60 M5 immediately comes to mind lol
My moms 2015 Maserati Ghibli had a fuel line failure before 1000 miles. The whole tank spilled in front of our house because two hoses were not crimped together properly. Thankfully it was a lease 😂
Jesus christ 😂
Doug eating a stack of cookies off of a Carrera GT while children are starving is a supervillain move. Savage. Batman will be taking him out soon.
Don't mention the cookies. If you mention the cookies, you're newly maintained/repaired finicky car will most certainly breakdown on you today. You'll need that AA Yellow recovery vehicle to come collect you and your money-pit. So whatever you do… Don't Mention the Cookies!
Doug does a video about X, Y, Z car and prices for those cars explode.
Doug does a garage video with Kennan or Alanis and prices for chocolate chips explode.
Doug! Stawp!
22:00 Good job the P38 AA yellow stands out in the fog, because the lights won't be working.
I once saw an Aston Martin Lagonda... with a yellow AA van in attendance.
I daily drive a P38 and I’ve had no problems for years. But I appreciate this video for keeping them cheap so I can buy more!
