- It's been an amazing journey over the last 6 years. I went from major illness and complete despair, to my life being completely transformed. Metal detecting has playing a major positive role in that last 6 years. However, I must give full credit to Jesus Christ, as he is the Master orchestrator of all things good.

A few clarifications for those who may post medical opinions on my past situation:
#1: The continual ringing started only weeks after the root canal (I said about a month)
#2: The night of the root canal, when I passed out the first time due to the trauma. There was a massive, loud ringing in my ears while it was happening.
#3: During the summer of the same year this all started. I went from beyond perfect vision (20-15) to losing much of my long distance vision and needing glasses. I remember being extremely frustrated in 2012-2013 because the changes happened so quick and I felt as blind as a bat.
#4: During all of this. My bloodwork came back normal.
#5 When I said later this year I'll be back to were my dental health needs to be. I didn't point out that my wisdom teeth are partially impacted (I have TMJ, and not sure if having those removed will help remedy) Truth be told. I'll probably never have them removed unless it's almost impossible to avoid. I still haven't regained the feeling in parts of my face from my last procedure over a month ago. So there's a possibility I may speak with a slight lisp for the rest of my life. We'll see. I've heard sometimes it can take a long time to regain feeling from deep procedures that put a lot of pressure on various nerves.

Nerve endings grow slowly, like a millimeter per year or something. I sawed into my thumb with a bow saw (nothin better to do [kidding of course]) it was about 11 years before I could feel the end of my thumb again.

Nice for you to give credit to Jesus. I say he carried me in raising my 2 sons by myself. Managed to keep them in the same rental house close to the elementary school and now they're 30 and 38. Time flies.
I feel compassion for you and for all you have been through, for many years.I had neglected my brushing routine as a kid and today i have upper and lower dentures. I regret not being a responsible child and thank goodness my sons have pearly whites and good insurance . Panic attacks happened to me about a year after I got stabbed accidently causing the loss of feeling and motor skills in my lower left arm. A year later I got awful panic attacks.My doc helped me through it and now it only happens once in a great while. I helped myself by embracing the fear which helped immensly.

Hi,JD. It just make me cry. Your story is incredible. I am older than You are,I get thrue a lot of trouble in my life,but What You went thru,I can not match. Sorry for my English,here might be some mistakes,cause I learn my English on the streets of Toronto,and I am an East European,so that explain itself. But what I wanna say,Your story inspires me,I am kind of getting older,and loosing slowly the grip on my life,and I start to think about metal detecting,and as a part of research I watched couple of your videos,but the this one really gives me a kick. You are always taking me home, The little streams The exploring old home places. Rivers. I would love for you to come to Tahlequah Oklahoma to explore the Illinois river. I was raised in this river. I learned many things from this river. My dad and I have found many many Arrowheads around this river. This is Cherokee Indian capital. Full of history. Thank you for taking me home once in a while as I am now 80 years old. My brother bought me my first garret metal detector. I still have that detector altho I am unable to hunt for treasures, I feel like I am right there with you as you find your first dig. "A problem shared is a problem halved " I'm 44 I started with fibromyalgia 11years ago which is debilitating ive got 2 bulging discs and I had a stroke in 2013 I've also got other minor problems. I'm bedbound but got a positive attitude ,I'm still here to see my family which I've got a wonderful supportive Husband and Son he has looked after me with personal care and taking me out since he was 12 he is 21 next month ,I don't see him much now with me being in the UK and my son at Drama school in Spain but we are in touch everyday . Thank-you for sharing Amanda! My mom has battled fibromyalgia and Lyme's disease, so I understand how debilitating it can be. Thankfully she has improved some over the last 2 years and can still get around, though there are still rough days (she doesn't drive) You are in my thoughts! Amazing story, bro. I did a tour in Bosnia, two in Iraq, and another in Afghanistan. I’m retired now and I think all that we go through is what makes us who we are. I recently got into detecting and am enjoying it alot. The thill of looking is its own drug. If you ever make it to the MS Gulf Coast, let me know. I’m all about a day in the sun.

JD you are a true inspiration for me and many others. I have had many issues with my health as well, in the past and currently, and metal detecting has made a big difference for me too. It keeps me moving and gets me out of the house even if it is in my own back yard. Depression and anxiety are very debilitating issues, added to that having arthritis makes ambition fly out the window. But finding videos like yours have made me really want to get out there and find my treasures. Thank you very much for sharing your story.

WOW! Your dental experience brought back many painful memories of my young life and back in those days there wasn't anything like implants, just the usual partials and/or dentures. The enamel never formed on my teeth, they would break off just eating a P & J sandwich or ice cream. I'm not going into a lot of it but one time in my early 20's I had a tooth break off the night before at supper. At the time, I was a school bus driver so, there wasn't time to make an appointment for the next day as my first run was at 6:30 am. That pain flared so badly I couldn't wait to park at the garage at 9:25 am. I was literally, crying by that time. It was all I could do to drive home, my head was going to burst! My Mom made an emergency call to the Dentist and drove me there while I sucked on a tea bag to ease the pain. I was in so much pain, my face was swollen red. The Dentist gave me five shots of Novacaine and I could still feel the pain. His nurse had to hold my arms and he jumped up in the chair, put his knee in my chest and inserted a mouth spreader. Until this day, 46 years later, I can still hear/feel the crunching, blood squirting, extraction of three abscessed teeth he pulled. Later, at 24 I had 23 pulled in the office and fitted with upper dentures. That left me with 6 of my own on the bottom. At 28, I had a full mouth of plastic and have been glad to this day.
So, my friend, you are not alone but now you have a healthy life ahead of you with a hobby that gives much pleasure and your outlook with the Lord is a beautiful thing to have, God Bless you as time moves on.
You are gonna make me cry! I'm glad your life took a turn and it's better! I had hard times growing up, in my life too! I got through it by faith, friends, sports, such as basketball, marching and concert band. Now, I love doing art to relax me. I love helping people and volunteering!

I was very moved by your honesty in the sharing of a part of your life that obviously is very hard to relive, even in thought. But this video hands down for me has been the best motivational and up lifting thing for me in awhile! I really needed to hear this story right now! I'm going threw some similar Issues regarding PTSD and anxiety and depression . Was actually in the middle of freaking out and your video popped on and gathered my attention. Like it was meant to be. Thank you, JD, for sharing some of your struggles and triumphs with us. I know chronic pain very well - and it's almost always different for each one of us, due to a number of factors. In my case, I was born with bone deformities due to dwarfism. Like you, I worked a lot in my earlier years once I was through with some of the earlier reconstruction in my knees. I loved "pulling up my own bootstraps, so to speak, and living a very independent life. As the years went by, the abnormalities grew and worsened (this time, cervical spine) and required surgical intervention. At that point, life as I knew it was over ( I was in my mid thirties by then). LOL - I kept defying the doctors and going back to work ... but life had other plans and lessons for me. After three long attempts, I learned some hard and physically painful lessons. Long story short, we never know where we might end up, what trials we may be confronted with, etc. To this day, I live with varying amounts of pain. Back in the late '90s and up until the last cervical spine reconstruction surgery and another to place a drainage shunt, I lived with migraines nearly everyday. It took my (great and very caring) primary care doctor over two years to convince me to try the hard stuff - the kinds of things I was raised not to take. I swear, it took me several more years to finally accept that these pharmaceutical-grade prescriptions are made for folks going through what I'd been dealing with for years, to feel comfortable with my decision to take them. I knew in my heart I wasn't weak (18 surgeries under my belt) or a user. After some trials and errors, I am at a new plateau. It changes every six months or so due to the deteriorations happening in my bones, but I work very closely with two types of neurosurgeons and a pain management specialist.
I guess my point is that, again, I am grateful you shared - and you're not at all alone. We have your back (emotionally speaking, anyway). I am so happy to hear you are doing much better and are starting such an exciting new chapter in your life. Take care, JD, and I'll be checking in now and again. Happy journeys, dude.

I enjoy all you share and have some similarities in my life, although I am twice as old. My tinnitus is now infrequent, also caused by extensive dental work beginning at age 8, large teeth, small jaw, TMJ (before they knew what to do with it), now tolerable, eight root canals through my life, and now autoimmune diseases. But the things you said, and that all things are connected, your love for the Lord, you have reminded me that there is always a way. I will pray for your well being and know you will prosper as you continue in your life. You're a great guy!

Very sorry you went through that, I had a similar thing getting diagnosed with fibromyalgia, took years to find out what was wrong. Along with toxic shock syndrome at the same time. Always being positive. I hated that at first the doctors told my family it was all in my head and it was not , finally thanks to a doctor who cared to go the extra mile, to run the test and get the correct diagnosis. Thank you for sharing your story. You are a survivor and I wish you the best with your upcoming dental work. I have a Dentist appointment this coming Monday. I always am afraid of going to the dentist but I do go twice a year. This time, I fear the worst. I lost a filling a month ago and I know I need the tooth extracted. Half the tooth is gone. Having a tooth pulled is the worst. I cry the whole time. I am mentally trying to prepare myself for the worst. I do have a great dentist and I hope he can get me through this. I am not asking for any advice. I guess I just wanted to open up about my fear and hope I get through this without pain and any problems. Thank you.
An update: I went to the appointment and everything worked out great! The Dentist was able to remove the rest of the filling, reconstruct the tooth and put in a new White filling. What felt like half the tooth was missing was a miscalculation of my tongue. Only a quarter of the tooth was gone. All is good now!
Your description of Johnstown was right on. Weekly shootings in the Moxham section. I commuted from Bedford to the hospital in Johnstown daily for 21 years. Couldn't wait to get out of that hole. I'm glad your feeling better. I also suffer from chronic physical problems and it seems like there is no end to it. I will be having 2 surgeries on my lower back at the end of October. I will keep your story in mind while I am recuperating.

Bless you...thanks for that inspirational video. I think that most of your issues after the root canal were mental. Our minds are a power thing, and you are a very intelligent individual with that being said you have learned that you can overcome anything. You kept your mind soo busy it didn't have time to think and trigger your thoughts of what you were going through which then triggered your anxiety attacks. Believer in self healing.

Years of problems and surgeries and diagnosis of MS. I am older and disabled now.
I want to detect so bad! I live vicariously through your videos and others.
I had a old silver dollar my parents left me and a really nice 1941 dime that was stolen along with all my jewelry. I have people who come in to help me and occasionally one is a thief.
By the grace of God one day I am going to get a metal detector and get out of this apartment. It is a goal I've had for a few years! I know I can do it and it will help me heal.
I believe God has put it in my heart.

JD, this was very touching and inspiring. I'm so glad that you are doing better now after years of those problems, I could only imagine how hopeless you must have felt at times. I feel the same way about metal detecting, it's more than just a hobby. It's the adventure and immersing yourself in history and nature and it gives you such a different perspective on life and makes you a deeper person. And you are right man without a foundation laid on Jesus Christ we are nothing. Thank you for sharing this. Also, I'm not sure where you are in TN now but if you are by the Nashville area I could help you out about spots around there. I've been going to Nashville every year around thanksgiving for the last few years and I love it out there.

Just the way you explain things, the way you break everything down, helps me to better understand relate to a lot that you have gone or are going through. This is an awesome story and testimony. This comment is for some reason, posting under my wife's account. My name is Bill. Your story is eerily similar to what I've been going through this year. Not in actual events, but the hopeless feeling that I was left with. It has been the roughest year of my life. I had to retire in Oct.2015 after 39+ years in a stressful job. I worked in prisons. My favorite hobby was metal detecting, so I told my wife that I would be going to Va. Beach at least twice a month. I haven't been yet. This year started with the passing of my Dad. 6 days after his funeral, I was in the hospital for a partial finger amputation after I developed gangrene in that finger. After discharge, I immediately lost use of my legs. They would just unexpectedly give out. 1 week after discharge, I went back into the ER due to my potassium levels being critical. I was just about done at that point. During all of this, I had unexplained blisters engulfing several of my fingers. Several specialists were unable to find the cause. So I get out after 10 days. My legs returned to normal. In April, the blisters returned. More tests, no results. In the last week of May, I was sent back to the hospital due to my extremely high potassium levels. They did a CT scan and a MRI and said I had a recent stroke. I was blessed though in that no particular muscles nor my speech was affected. I did have some light headiness which would come and go. They blamed that on the stroke so after 9 days in the hospital, they moved me to an intensive in-house rehab facility. They worked wonders. After a few days, I had improved so much that my hope had returned and I was excited about getting out and going metal detecting again. Prior to rehab, I had figured that MD was a thing of the past. Exactly 1 week after discharge from rehab, I went back into the hospital for the potassium issue. They put a dialysis port in my neck in the ER and the dialysis began. Now it's 4 hrs/day, 3 days/week. They moved the port to my chest and I had surgery on my left arm for a port that won't be usable for at least another month. About 6 weeks ago, woke up on a Sunday morning to a loud buzzing alarm going off. My wife was already up and I couldn't figure out what this alarm was. I called out to her and she said everything was alright. I covered my ears but the alarm was just as loud. Then I realized that it was in my ears, not an alarm. It sounded like high pitched cicadas. It softened after about an hour. I still hear it although it is very light now. Srry to go on so long, but your story has inspired me to not give up. Thank you for sharing.
I had a dentistry scare this year. For the last couple of years I was majorly addicted to heroin but still working. Before this I had really good teeth because I had braces and took great care of them. Due to my addiction I neglected my teeth for the duration of it. This year I started an Opiate Substitute Treatment programme and started to treat my teeth a lot better but they started to hurt which really worried me, I thought I had multiple holes and knew how bad root canals hurt and really didn't want to get that procedure done. It turned out my wisdom tooth was pushing the others forward and it had chipped apart and the decay was affecting my other teeth. I got it taken out that day and no problems. I'm yet to get the others out but it really woke me up and my teeth are looking much much better and whiter and I really love it. But yeah if any one has read this make sure you take care of your teeth. It's cheap and keeps people really attractive plus procedures are painful, can prevent sleep and have a lot of other mental impacts. Glad to hear you're on top of it now JD :)
