Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and Hand Therapy

  • Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), combined with hand therapy, is currently a research-based treatment. It is intended to help people with stroke achieve greater recovery of hand function. The hand weakness following a stroke stems from brain neurons destroyed by the stroke, as well as from surviving neurons. The surviving neurons become dormant (not active) through inactivity and suppression from the non-stroke hemisphere. In some patients, rTMS can help dormant neurons reactivate and thereby improve voluntary hand function.

I’ve been getting TMS therapy for a few years now to help with my Major Depressive Disorder and anxiety, I can’t even begin to tell you how much TMS has helped me. You can use it as an alternative or in tandem with medication to really help.☺️

What part(s) of the brain did they stimulate? How many sessions before you started to notice a change?

This is very interesting and indeed a new way of enhancing rehabilitation potential for stroke patients. Are there any key reports or studies that we could look at?

in NL they say it's not save to do when people had a head-infarct. weird, in video they only talk about strokes... so is it realy save , if the brain is already broken? i mean if you have a totaly stiff LEFT hand/arm and no feeling on no stearing in LEFT leg. they are also feeling cold. is it realy save to take rTMS then?

@ In the video, the doctor says that it works to help improve the functioning of the surviving brain cells, not to 'revive' the deceased or irreversibly damaged ones.

Surely in that example the hand moved because the rTMS was over the motor cortex.
