Wonderful, wonderful match. One would actually think that ASV did have a chance to win here. This was Arantxa's second to last great opportunities to actually beat an in form Hingis, which didn't happen obviously. After 1998, it never got close between them anymore.

Even at her best like here Arantxa had huge troubles with Martina's game but she managed to beat her once after 98 (Amelia Island 2001)

She got close in the 96USO too

@@paskferr yes, it was 6/4 in the 3d but Arantxa did not play well, especially on the forehand side. And her 1st set was catastrophic

This is still not a walk in the park for Hingis, ASV is the reigning French Open champ 98, high in confidence.

@@pisujmagz7668 in 98', not at all for Hingis. They had intense battles here and at the Fed Cup finals, which was a classic in its own right. I personally really liked Arantxa's concentration and confidence in both matches, as well as her reworked forehand.

Arantxa played very well and was in great shape, but she really lacked confidence. She did not believe at all that she could beat Martina after so many defeats. As soon as there was a chance to win, the quality of the game plummeted. There is a video of the full match. In between games, Arantxa looked like a very nervous and very insecure woman. It is a pity that Martina fell out of the net so early.
This white dress is perhaps Arantxa's best court outfit in her career.

I would argue that's not true.. she was just crowned Roland Garros champion 3 weeks before beating Seles who she had like 2-11 record against... She just did not win the match...truth be told she should have never beaten Seles at the french

One of the differences between those two was that Hingis had a much better forehand than ASV.

Which says a lot about Asv forehand (not great). Hingis also better tactically and at net.

Not in this particular match however. And the reason why Hingis had a great match up with ASV was her taking the ball on the rise leaving ASV with no safe space to hit (and Hingis being more tactically sound), not necessarily becuase of the forehand. I think ASV should have used more slices to set up points more here. Hingis was great at retrieving slices, but not so at generating slices herself.

Her backhand is better, her best shot

Thank you but it's a shame because we are not aware of the score, not even at the end of the match. What is the final score?
