    What Kevin does here is called "celloboxing." PTX's life is very fast-paced. When they're on tour, they perform almost every night, BUT they devote the entire afternoon to fans who've bought VIP passes: soundcheck, Q&A, meet & greet with autographs, posed photos with each of some 100 fans, private performance with 10-12 fans--and all this before they dress and warm up for the show. They often meet fans at the tour bus afterwards, too. Then they compose, arrange, & shoot videos during tour as well, and appear on TV and radio shows in every city. When they sightsee in Europe, they stop and talk to fans. They post constantly on all social media. They put out an album a year and usually a Christmas one as well; if not, they record a couple of new Christmas songs for a deluxe edition. They're on tour most of the year, and do scattered concerts when they're not on tour. They go to the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Australia nearly every year, and occasionally other countries as well. THEY WORK SO HARD! In addition, each of the five has put out at least one solo EP (Scott & Mitch together as Superfruit). It's no wonder it's too much for Avi. And yes, he is a nature boy! Check out his music (4 videos and 2 other songs) as Avriel and the Sequoias. And Kirstin's new EP, "Love."

    Avi could've stayed with them but it would have been really bad for his mental health. And while it is heartbreaking that he's leaving, more than ANYTHING, the fans want and the rest of the group wants him to be happy and healthy. The thing you have to know about the other 4 is that they are all VERY into working and making music and don't have as much trouble with that kind of pace that Avi does. And Avi knows that and would never ask them to slow down their pace and risk them missing out on opportunities because of him. He has always been EXTREMELY family oriented and being away from his family (especially his mom and dad) for such a long time consistently over the past 6 years has probably been really hard for him. But on the bright side it has given them time to work on all of their solo projects and all of them are incredible!

      I was scrolling down to see if anyone else was thinking about the other solo projects. Kirstin is doing her own thing, and the Scott and Mitch have Superfruit. PLUS, they just released a tweet not too long ago that stated "NEW MUSIC. NEW VOICE. NEW VIDEOS. NEW TOUR. #SOON." Home Free had a similar situation where one of the founders left and they got a new person. Now it wasn't their bass, but with only 5 people in a group, it's pretty damn obvious when one gets changed out with someone else. Home Free definitely did a good job with adding Adam, but it still is noticeable. (Not in a bad way mind you, but still noticeable.)

    @marymarchmcclelland5203 Před 4 lety +12

    Three years later.
    Avi's mother was having a second scare of cancer.
    He was wanting to be able to be with her and his dad.
    He was talking this week abut his mental health.
    His favorite place is his cabin in the forests of Tennessee.
    He walks through those forests everyday he can.
    He is gardening, has made 3 EP's and generally drops a from home video each week.
    You mentioned Kevin's chello sounding like Avi's voice.
    His first album, Avriel and the Sequoias, has a song titled Fields and Pier that has Avi's
    voice with Kevin matching his notes on the chello.
    While Avi is probably not doing "your kind of music", this short combo is beautiful.

    @srslyboomer Před 7 lety +47

    Kevin had a celloboxing vid go viral, and that's how Scott found him for the SingOff! in 2011. He's...amazing. I mean, they all are, but Kevin is just that much more of an overachiever.
    I don't know if PTX meant this to be "about" Avi leaving - but yeah, I read that into it as well, even down to the "sad, but not in a bad way, just in an 'it's over and I wish it weren't but I really want you to be happy" way.
    I have a huge amount of respect for PTX. I can't think of another group where, when someone left, the whole group was together for them when they announced the decision. They have all given a lot of themselves to us, and let us be...part of their, um, tribe? clan? family? I don't know. But all of us Pentaholics have this "I feel like they're my friends and I really want to hang out with them" vibe, I think. And, like true friends do, when someone needs something to stay who they are, or want/need to be, everything I've seen from the rest of the group and from Pentaholics in general has been "thank you for everything you've done for us, Avi, and we can't wait to see what's ahead for you and for PTX, we love you and love you being true to yourself!"
    PTX has helped me get through a not-so-hot couple of years; I can only wish them, all of them, the very best, together or apart.

  • @MinecraftLuvr007
    @MinecraftLuvr007 Před 7 lety +48

    Avi has made it a very big point in the past that his family is incredibly important to him. In their documentary, a vast majority of his screentime was him talking about his family and how much he loved them and how hard it was to be away from them - Pentatonix's original song, "Standing By," which he sings, is even about that exact subject. I won't say that him announcing his departure from the group wasn't surprising, because it definitely was, but his reasons for doing so were definitely not unexpected. It's incredibly sad, especially for us die-hard fans, but I'm happy to say that he's been getting support all across the board. PTX is on a kind of hiatus for the next year while they work on solo stuff and attempt to find a new bass, according to a few interviews they've done.

    • @MSKPELLEGRINO
      @MSKPELLEGRINO Před 7 lety +17

      In addition, Avi has said that his biggest fear is not finding the love of his life. And, also, that he's been ready to have kids for 'a long time now'. His life has been so work-focused that he hasn't had time to nurture other important parts of his life.
      Also, both Avi and Mitch struggle with anxiety and depression. Mitch has an anchor with him wherever he goes in Scott. He's openly said that Scott is the one that helps him cope with his anxiety and panic attacks. Probably one of the reasons that Avi's sister Esther has travelled with them is to support Avi (as well as to manage the tour itself).
      But I think he just needs to get off the merry-go-round. Kevin and Scott are both beasts when it comes to relentless effort and pursuit of excellence. Unending effort is what has enabled PTX to swim upstream and make an A cappella band a mainstream success. Mitch and Kirstin are happy to work alongside them. But for Avi, there's got to be several times where he's looked around and thought 'is this what I really want'? Too much of a good thing is still simply that. Too much.

    Glad you reacted to the announcement video as well. I felt it was beautifully done with the other members sitting by his side, because to me, personally as a fan, it was comforting to know that they are not separating on bad terms and that the others support him with his decision, as hard as it is to digest. Avi has always been a family guy & nature boy.. In all their interviews and tour backstage clips, he's always mentioning how much he misses his family and talks about how being away from them is hard..
    And I do feel the song was appropriately picked kind of as an ode to Avi can I say? The cello solo...Scott's "I just came to say goodbye"..The lyrics in general actually.. Not with any negativity though, that's not them.. They all are still very much friends and deeply love and care for each other

    Great reaction. Avi's leaving - he's since done interviews in support of his solo EP where he's elaborated that he's had major anxiety since childhood and that the fast pace (7 eps in 6 years/constant touring/promotion usually 11 months out of the years) only increased the anxiety. I loved the new song and we're, I think, all waiting to see who they get as the new bass.

    My read that Avi's mother had been battling cancer for some time and, in addition to their mad pace of touring, recording, and making music, Avi was often flying to spend some time with his mother and the rest of his family whenever he could. It must have exhausted him in several ways. He also grew up next to the Sequoia National Park in California and loved to spend time in the park.

    I will say people are built differently! Mitch and Scott (and they said so) they are the kind of people to always be working! And on the contrary, Avi is not like this. He was able to do this for six years but of course over time if you have not been accustomed to that fast pace, these factors wane on mental and physical health. And because many artists are not willing, or find it hard to give up the success for their benefit, they turn to drugs to cope. I prefer Avi to leave and keep his sanity and still having him do music (solo) and possibly guest appearances with the group, than to hear otherwise (in a negative light) for the sake of the current success trajectory. That's my take on it!

    Thanks for the thoughtful reaction. You can imagine how hard watching each of these videos was for longtime fans. Like Roman, I wondered why couldn't they just slow down as a group, doing solo projects off and on. But maybe there is more to it. In the "Dancing On My Own" video - I think they seemed sad, but it was good to hear a new song. Someone said that it was classy for them to wait until the end of their last tour with Avi in Sept. to bring in a new bass, and I agree. If you want to see another video with Kevin cello-boxing, check out "PTX Radioactive ft. Lindsey Sterling".

    And also, the rhythm they followed until before the pandemic was wild, and they were in constant movement, recording material, many videos on CZcams, (because it is their main means of exposure) tours, promotions, I think that was too much and not everyone can handle that rhythm of life, without losing themselves,
