- Hello everyone, hopefully we're all having a great Tonix Tuesday! Today we're going to be taking a look at Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, and Kevin Olusola performing their arrangement for the Robyn hit "Dancing On My Own". You may have noticed that I only listed 4 members of Pentatonix. If someone could explain why that would be amazing lol. Thank you all so much for watching :)

They did this between basses. In my mind, it’s their goodbye to Avi. The cello played the bass line - it’s literally the sound of Avi’s absence.
Another reactor summed it up perfectly - "Kevin plays the cello and I just hear Avi"
Exactly my feeling aswell. A sad goodbye and dancing on their own without Avi 😥
this is the first song they did after Avi left. when scott looks at the camera and says i just came to say goodbye, i get a little choked up
same
Still do too!
There were some real emotions showing there, they wouldn't have known which direction things were going to take, but I love them for their sincerity.
The old Christian hymn AWAY IN A MANGER is the only other video they released in the between Avi and Matt period.
and their Jinggle Bells on steroid from their NBC Christmas Special was also without Matt... Probably some other songs/performances were without Matt, since he was not yet officially PTX member during that time.
First video after Avi left, I literally sobbed the first 10 times I watched it during that cello solo. You can hear Avi’s voice in that cello solo. I felt like they were singing to Avi. So sad, and beautiful. Melancholy. Kevin has Renegade.
Every time I hear this cover from them I get teary-eyed and do consider it their goodbye to Avi. Kevin does have two EPs out now: Renegade and Don't Let Me Be Understood
Me too, I still tear up.
This was released shortly before Avi's last performances with PTX. At that point, legal issues were setting in regarding recordings in particular, so they had to do it without Avi, even though he was technically still a member. Those issues got heavier, and restricted him in creating and releasing his own music for a year (I believe that was the time frame). He took that time to travel, spend time with his family, and recover physically and emotionally from the 6-year grind that had worn him down. In this video, you can particularly see the emotion on Kevin's face, knowing his best friend was leaving.
Sounds like SME/RCA being a hardass again. I suspect that if the decisions were made by PTX themselves, it wouldn't have been an issue.
Rumour was that the issues equally prevented PTX from releasing many, many original songs that had been written but not yet arranged or recorded. I'm wondering if there was a similar time limit (2019), and that is why we are now seeing the release of so many new originals within a short time span for PTX.
@@elizabethfelet4743 There are so many rumors floating around out there, and we'll undoubtedly never know what's true and what's not. I've heard that a big issue in PTX putting out that earlier original music is that Avi had been a big part of the writing of some of those songs, and the label didn't want to have to credit him or let him have his share of subsequent royalties, as he wasn't signed to them any longer. Again, good old unsubstantiable (if that's even a word, lol) rumors.
@@charlottevan_8 you are correct, and we may never know. I have to respect both PTX and Avi that they have kept it out of the media.
@@charlottevan_8 , "unsubstantiated," I think, is the word. And no matter how many lawyer friends and colleagues I've had over the years, this type of situation makes me think "there's no situation so bad that lawyers can't make it worse."
This really makes me so grateful for Matt 🥰
One of my favorite covers of theirs for sure. It was so emotional, and literally them saying goodbye to Avi and a huge chapter in their life.
They also did "Away in a Manger" without a bass. Same time frame, when Avi had left and they were looking for a new bass.
and don't forget their Jinggle Bells on steroid from their NBC Christmas Special
It was heartbreaking to see Avi go. I understood his reasons, but this was tough on all of them. Breakup or not, I think it was group's message to the fanbase that they weren't going away.
This cover/upgrade always break my heart!
Away in a manger is very brilliantly done too , with just the 4 of them !!
Kevin does have a solo album "The Renegade". Some great stuff on it.
"They could have panned down and Kevin could've been taking the mcat with his foot..." lmao Best line ever ~ Yes he is just that amazing.
They did two videos between Avi leaving and Matt joining. This was the first and the second is Away in a Manger.
In this the bass part is filled by the cello :)
Also their cover is closer to the Callum Scott cover.
I always felt this cover related to Avi leaving. It is one of their best and most heartfelt. It also let us know they weren’t going anywhere, and that was a relief!
This was their first release after Avi left and before they found Matt.. I think the “Dancing on my own” message was a nod to that loss. The Cello sort of replaced Avi I guess. Love Matt!! But Avi will always be missed! 💔
this says "Robyn Cover" because it was her song originally, but it was more like Calum Scott's version of this song. If you listen to Calum Scott do this song, it will seem more in sync. And they did this song in between Avi and Matt. A cello can take over a bass line just as well. But I miss the interplay between Matt and Kevin.
As I recall the timeline, Avi announced his resignation from PTX in April 2017, which took effect in September, at the end of their summer tour.
They did 2 videos without a bass - this and ‘Away in the Manger.’
They hired Matt as “the bass who will be singing with us for the holiday season.” The “holiday season” included: ‘Deck the Halls’ video (which I think was released early November?), an NBC Christmas special & their first ever holiday tour (all of December).
Yes, this is pretty accurate. You can add that Matt was hired on permanently in March of 2018.
Nope decision was made late 2016, just took a while to get everything in place
@@larrywt656 signed march 2018 but was performing with ptx from June 2017
It was definitely about Avi. Saying goodbye. I tear up every time when Scott looks at the camera and says “say goodbye” 😭
I believe they released two songs between Avi and Matt. This one and Away In the Manger.
I know a lot of people think of this as a goodbye to Avi but I agree it's more like a breakup song to Avi. If you listen to the lyrics. "I'm in the corner watching you kiss her and why can't you see me I'm right over here. and you don't see me standing here. I just came to say goodbye." To me that's about how Avi had already moved on to another group with the Sequioas. He technically did a couple songs with them before he even announced he was leaving ptx. All of us assumed it was a side project at the time but obviously it was a replacement project. He was still with ptx since they had remaining shows left. He had to finish out their summer tour before he was officially gone but after his announcement they were without a bass for future projects until they found a replacement. I also feel this song was more for the fans who were worried that ptx would end after Avi's announcement. They were showing us that the show goes on and they're going to make it work without him.
Welp, break up and goodbye aren't mutually exclusive / also a break up isn't necesarilly nasty.
Others wrote already in details what was the possible legal background of releasing or not releasing songs (+ just becouse fans/ audience didn't know what works or sideprojects are in the making again in the background, it doesn't mean they among them knowvnothing as well 🙃)
@@livus3787 I never said the group wasn't eventaully aware of what he had planned. Doesn't mean they weren't hurt by him moving on to a new group and possibly ending their careers in the process. At the time they had no idea if they'd be able to continue or how the fans would react. He had a group he'd already established to move on to while they were left in limbo. I said at the time he put out those couple songs with the sequioas the fans all assumed it was a side project since none of us new about his plans to move on yet. I actually know more details of what went on before and after he left and it wasn't pretty in the end. Legally or personally. Some greed got in the way of keeping things civil. Haven't you noticed they never speak of him and he never speaks of them? Only Kevin has acknowledged him since he left. He was at Kevin's wedding. That should have been a reunion for them and the fans but not one of them posted anything with him or was even seen around him. I think he's a great singer and I used to like him but knowing what he did and more so what he tried to do I just can't anymore.
Yay! One of my all time favorites!!! Mitch, oh Mitch...
When Avi first left, Matt was on a trial basis. This was in the period where Matt filled in for Avi at concerts, but before he was an official member.
I'm so glad you reacted to this! I love this so much but I feel that it's often overlooked b/c of the lack of bass, or because people find it too sad. But I just love it.
For some reason, this one doesn’t get the attention it deserves. This is one of my all time favourites and came at a difficult time when Avi had left and before Matt came in to save us. The sadness is palpable and I felt it too. To this day I acutely remember this as a very low period filled with anxiety and worry about the future. Love your reactions. Your commentary is always insightful and fascinating.
The first studio recording done after Avi announced he was leaving (he was technically still part of the touring group). They did NOT do an entire album without a bass singer, just this single and one Christmas song (Away in a Manger). By the time they recorded the full Christmas album, Matt had joined them as a "special guest bass singer", but not a full member, and also went on their Holiday Tour in the same capacity. The audiences accepted him right out of the gate and he became a full-time member in March 2018. In this particular song, Kevin's cello was tuned lower than usual to become the "bass singer" in the song.
This song still, after all these years, makes me cry.
the cello *sings* the lines "So far away but still so near/
The lights come on, the music dies" :') 😉
Kevin does say btw that he wants to make his cello ('Beyonce' or the other one I don't know *her* name xD) sing, not just to sound like an instrument :)
They did this just after Avi left. The sadness you are seeing is real, and I still can't watch this without getting soppy, but it's so beautiful that I still love it. There are just two songs that the four of them did after Avi left and Matt became part of the group, this one and Away In A Manger. The line from Scott "I just came to say good-bye", Yikes!
Kevin taking the M-cats with his foot had me rolling. I wouldn’t put it past him as well
Yes, this was the first video they put out after Avi left. 🥺
Another great reaction! Thanks and please keep them coming!
When I heard the cello solo I broke down because it was pure Avi...the look on their faces, it was the 1st video without Avi and I too thought it was their good bye. Rob the Reactor said it best "...all I heard was Avi" 💚
Yeah Avi couldn't be part of new recordings because he was on his way out & Matt wasn't officially in PTX yet, was in what would be equivalent to a training period where a company hires you under temp status to see if you're a good fit before officially hiring you permanently or sending you packing. So that period of time where Avi was helping to audition, then settle in his replacement & then leave was awkward legally.
I believe someone said though that what they did to get around that legal stuff (once Avi was really leaving for good as he wasn't going to join them for starting the next tour) was giving Matt a featured guest status for their live performances scheduled in the last few months of that year. Then his contract as a full member started in Jan.
This is when Avi left and Matt wasn't added yet
Its one of my favioute. It was between basses
Thanks for the reaction. There were two songs with just the 4 of them. Both are great. Kevin has 2 amazing EPs that you can purchase and/or stream "Renegade" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". Kevin is/was part of a trio band, "Triptyq" and they have a self titled EP which is AWESOME, imho. Some songs were started before Pentatonix and the rest during Pentatonix. You can find them all on Kevin's CZcams channel.
I agree with those who are saying it's their goodbye to Avi. The emotion is so strong. ETA: I believe you've done Amazing Grace. Mitch is so about the vocal high-wire act most of the time that it's easy to forget he's a terribly talented "regular" tenor as well.
They did this and AWAY IN A MANGER between Avi and Matt, though I believe Avi was still a member at this point technically, right before his last performance with the group.
I thinks Kevin's got his own album called Renegade
I always say I see the cello, but I hear Avi!
They're doing Callum Scott version
Between bass singers. I love the Cello... Thanks!
This was the first song the group had put out since Avi had left the group and at that point they didn’t have Matt. As others have said, Kevin’s cello Beyoncé is doing the bass line that unfortunately Avi couldn’t do.
Oh, soo good! I listened to this twice. second time thinking of Avi leaving. 😭😭 I am so glad they found Matt! 😀😎
I also think you would like Mitch’s solo music “messer”
This song makes me tear up. I think it was a goodbye to Avi. I can't watch it without that emotional reaction.
Same.
Hey friend. Marvelous. ✌🏾❤️
Check out away in a manger… it’s without a base too..
This was done between Avi leaving and Matt joining (about 3-4 months)
Even without Matts terrific bass, they are great. I hope the 5 of them are still together.
Kevin tuned the cello to be Avi. I think It’s their goodbye to Avi They are dancing on their own
So Beyoncé ...Kevin's chelo was the bass
I look forward to your reaction to their newest cover, "I Just Called to Say I Love You". Here is the link: Pentatonix - "I Just Called To Say I Love You" - Visualizer - CZcams
I get choked up knowing they were missing Avi.
They did a few projects without a bass. Lip sync battle, a very pentatonix Christmas and I think Drop the Mic
U should react to the lucifer musical episode or at least the songs from it incuding the song Smile beause it is adorable and sad at the same time 😀
Pretty sure they did only 2 songs without a bass- this and Away in a Manger. The cello pretty much covers the bass.
officially only 2... but their Jinggle Bells on steroid from their NBC Christmas Special was also without Matt and they put this song in their Christmas Album that year
this one is so sad. feels like avi's goodbye, kevin is playing the bass line on the cello, even lets the cello sing a line of the song in the middle when it pans over to kevin, he's filling in the part his friend would've sang. "i just came to say goodbye" is so sad from scott
That's on Scott, the CellAvi lines were "So far away but still so near /
The lights come on, the music dies" :')
This time the cello acts as a bass. It was after Avi and before Matt.
OMG! What a sadness. Goodbye to Avi (luckily the one who joined them after Avi left was Matt - and I am sure you agree wiht me, that he is pure diamond). Of course I am no expert but If you ask me ... this is THE masterpiece!
Can u react to the flash musical episode i think t is season 3 epsode 7 bit i am not sure
This is what PTX would sound like with out a bass....not bad😎PS Avi left on good terms.....still the sadness.
If you notice Avi is not with them. This was kind of a love letter to him.
If I had to, I would pick mid-range Mitch over high range Mitch.
Recommend their Rather Be, A Little Space featuring ATEEZ, and Midnight In Tokyo featuring LGM.
bit random but will you ever try listening to superfruit
He does Superfruit Saturdays!
He's listened to all the superfruit music. Some may have been on his old channel. He even does superfruit Saturdays to now watch their vlogs since he ran out of music to react to.
As others have said this and Away in a Manger are the only ones released without Avi before Matt. I don't know if it was meant to be, but many Pentaholics consider this a goodbye to Avi.
Pentatonix went the direction of Callum Scott's cover version of this song rather than the original.
It was AVI'S GOODBYE!!!!😥
Basic timeliness is 2016 tensions arose when avi felt kirstie was holding group back, near December he made decision to issue ultimatum her or him, and that was that, 50 bassists were invited to send in audition tapes, which got whittled down, matt did his in person tryout around June time, avi left end of August ( that's real version not sanitised one they presented to us ) and now you know why kirsties pissed in his leaving video
I think the whole story about Avi wanting to kick Kirstie out is fake. The day I hear it from one of them or from Avi I'll believe it, and it's never right to pass on baseless stories. He did say in an interview that he saw one of their early videos and was excited to sing with them - including Kirstie. He's not a stupid man, who might think that Scott and Mitch would ever go along with that. It just wasn't his music or lifestyle, and it was good for him to leave.
@@rlhcat7662 not baseless, they had an album of originals ready to go, and he blocked that
@@stevensallsorts I'm not questioning that. That situation is common when a group splits up, especially when they all played a part in writing and arranging their songs. I'm questioning your unproven, hearsay statement about Avi leaving because "it was him or Kirstie". That would be stupid, and Avi is not stupid, but people who pass that on as fact are.
@@rlhcat7662 if everything's fine then why did everyone except Kevin unfollow avi on all platforms
@@rlhcat7662 I agree. He would already know he was leaving if he had made that ultimatum because there is no way they would get rid of Kirstie. As you say Avi doesn't seem to be a stupid person.
Will NOT listen to filth.
