  • Just 50 minutes from Nimes, Le-Grau-du-Roi sits on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Palm trees, fishing boats, a lovely beach, overpriced beer and the fascinating Seaquarium. An amazing, memorable day.
    Filmed July 2023 | Le-Grau-du-Roi, France.

      Good old Ryanair. People often knock them, but I think they are great. Been to so many different places with them for very little money. 😊

    Hi Scott. Really enjoying your travels in France. I have lived in the Auvergne region of France for over 40 years. Have you ever thought of visiting? We have volcanoes and wonderful walking. The highest being the Puy de Dôme which the Tour de France climbed this year. The capital is Clermont-Ferrand which is the home of Michelin tyres as well as ASM rugby who play in the Top 14. Enjoy your stay. Stewart

    That fish seriously upstaged you. :) Enjoyed the journey. Glad it wasn't such a marathon of endurance in heat, dust, humidity as the previous one...and glad that you didn't end up with heat stroke. As much as we're enjoying each excursion in France, as travel nerds, we're still hoping you'll did that grocery shop walkabout.

    Please try heading Montpellier town center by train. And visit Place de la Comédie, the Promenade du Peyrou, Fabre Museum both into the old town. And take a tram to get through Antigone area designed by architect Riccardo Bofill (Place de l’Europe) 🇫🇷

    Your visit to the aquarium reminds me of one I visited in Boulogne years ago. Saw the fish, became hungry and then visited the excellent seafood restaurant in the aquarium. Typical French pragmatism. I also agree with the restaurateurs and bar owners who prefer to use cash rather than credit cards, why should their labours help to swell the income of the credit card companies?

      beer is quite expensive in France as it is, not just in the touristy spots. I remember paying €2,60 for a 'pression' 25 cl in St-Jean-Cappel in the north of France, not a touristy area, not even 10 km from the border with Belgium, where you can still buy a similar 'pintje' (25 cl) for less than €2 in the most rural places (it's mostly €2-2,20 elsewhere, too, now). France is a wine country, and the taxman tries to keep it that way.
      There might have been an extra charge for sitting on the terrace as well (like in Italy, your espresso will double in price, if not more, between standing at the bar, sitting inside or sitting on the terrace).

  • @wildfire9782
    @wildfire9782 Před 9 měsíci +1

    Standing at the bar that beer would have been €4.50. Sitting down inside: €7.00. Sitting outside is €9.00. Bienvenue a France...

    The South of France was always a by word for someone who had money , when I was younger ie ` They`ve gone to the South of France on holiday ` .

      @barvdw Před 9 měsíci +3

      It depends, you can still find more affordable locations, and it depends a bit on when and where. Sitting on the terrace often comes with an extra fee, there, and drinking beer is taxed heavily compared to wine in France. In general, I'd not buy a beer in France, I would go for wine, or perhaps a pastis in the south, and would prefer the lunch specials, as they are often a lot cheaper than at dinner.
      I've had a 2-course lunch (starter, main) with the house wine included for less than €18, a freshly made bouillabaisse. I've had chippies that are more expensive...

    Nîmes is indeed located between the sea and the mountain, 40 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea to the Grau du Roi through the wild landscapes of the Camargue and 50 kilometers from the mountain with the foothills of the Cevennes . Thus Nîmois can go to the beach in summer and skiing in winter in the resorts of Mont Aigoual or Mas de la Barque.Le Grau du Roi is so called because it was the canal of the medieval fortified port of Aigues Mortes built by order of the king of France Louis IX became Saint Louis from where The latter went on a crusade twice in 1248 towards Egypt and in 1270 towards Tunis where he will find death. The city of Aigues Mortes celebrates every year on 25 August the feast day of Saint Louis l"embarkation of the king on this same date for its 1st crusade with a historical reconstitution.

    Thanks Scott for a super video. I am amazed that 15 days after this video was published nobody has yet commented on the extremely cheap train fare of just ONE EURO single. I believe that it is the standard fare on all local; trains in Occitaine. Contrast that with the very temporary maximum English BUS single fare of two pounds.
