    I just want to say, placing Suzanne Somers in her ethereal American Graffiti role right after Raquel Welch's "guardian angel" quote is just one reason why TCM's tributes are miles above the Oscars' or anyone else's. There's thought behind the editing of these little gems that illustrate how much the people who put these together know, love, and most of all, revere movies, and the people who make them.

      I wholeheartedly agree. TCM is a beacon of class and taste. Those of us who appreciate classic/iconic films applaud their efforts. Damn, I didn't even know about Melinda Dillon and Barry Newman. Melinda was such a gifted, versatile actress. And Barry's role in Vanishing Point is legendary. R.I.P. to all who passed.

    Every year, TCM says goodbye to those we lost and tears appear in my eyes after the first viewing. It's phenomenal what the people at Turner Classic Movies are able to capture in under five minutes for the multitude of loss we who have appreciated the art of film feel each year. I feel I say this every year, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in their Oscar In Memoriam part of programming should take their cues from TCM.

      Much too fast to see, read, remember, or feel anything except the thinnest sliver of would-be emotion, instantly forgotten in the tsunami that follows each name....It rightly should be a minimum of 15 minutes in order to treat the dead, and us, with honor, sensitivity, compassion, and passion. (We can take it, even in this era of speed without focus.)...Otherwise, it is just a barely seen list with barely seen pictures, accomplishing nearly nothing, a potentially powerful exercise in shared creative humanity....Better than the Oscars (which should never be referred to as a benchmark). But perhaps not really. Better, probably, than nothing. Maybe not.

      And let's not forget Cindy either. Cindy Williams appeared with Suzanne Sommers in the movie "American Graffiti", made in 1973. They both went on to becoming major sit-com stars on TV later on that decade. Cindy became famous as Shirley Feeney in the series "Laverne and Shirley", with Penny Marshall. And Suzanne went on to play Chrissy Snow, in the program "Three's Company", in which she co-starred with John Ritter. Those two girls were among the funniest women ever seen in situation-comedy shows during the 1970s. Thanks Cindy and Suzanne, and the rest of you women, for all the years of great entertainment you have given us. Rest peacefully, and may God bless you.

    Dear Academy and Emmy Award producers: Hire the people behind the best annual tribute of its kind for your upcoming In Memoriam segments next year. You will NEVER have an issue again with leaving people out.

    • @Okaydo1
      @Okaydo1 Před 6 měsíci +5

      1. The producers aren't responsible for who makes the In Memoriam. The Academy sets up a committee that meets over the course of a month. The In Memoriam has to represent all 18 branches. Actors are only one branch, so many famous people are going to be excluded. There are like 700 deaths and only like 70 can make the telecast and the segment can't be too long.
      So hiring the TCM In Memoriam people, who don't have to deal with these obstacles and who can do what they want and include Suzanne Somers (whose movie fame amounts to a few seconds), won't solve the problem.

    • @annkey4091
      @annkey4091 Před 6 měsíci

      @@Okaydo1 I can see what @simonapplebaum2447 is getting at. I can see the Academy's issues also. As a viewer, one of the highlights is In Memoriam. The program is just too long. In short, I have found, over the years, if I find the In Memoriam segment a main highlight, then there is something to be desired about the program. Audience panning just does not get it.

TCM took a clip from that movie and created a 3-split screen, with each screen appearing in synch with three drum beats of the tribute song, and on the fourth drum beat, Davis’ photo appears alongside the movie clip. That alone shows the kind of thought TCM puts into their annual tributes. Bravo to the editor who did that.

    • @Okaydo1

      It's apples and oranges. TCM is free to do what it wants. The Oscars In Memoriam is decided by the academy. They have to reduce 274 names down to 55. And of that 55 has to represent 18 branches of the academy, one of which is acting. So many actors are going to bed left out. The TCM montage is great, but it excludes many of the people who will be honored in the upcoming Oscars In Memoriam.

    • @mcoleman6893
      @mcoleman6893 Před 6 měsíci +2

      @Okaydo1 Your points are noted and reasonable. The names left off of either list likely involved some difficult choices. There are other ways to remedy this, such as presenting more detailed listing online. In this year's Oscar broadcast, the memoriam segment was rushed through so quickly, yet the commercials afterward were aired at regular speed. I acknowledge that the bills have to be and should be paid. But the people that we lost were cherished and remembered professionals within and/or connected to the industry. They should be treated as such.

      So true. I lost 2 of my sons in the past 14 months. 44 and 46. I am 71 and never thought they would be gone before me. I am very sad but it is true what you said I always remember the great times we had and look at the photos and smile. When I watch TCM Remembers there are many actors that we watched together as a family and it make the smile. I hope we will all be together again in a better place. This world can be rough.
