Go West, Young Man: Decoding John Ford | The Plot Thickens (S5 E1) | TCM
Episode 1 - Go West, Young Man
John Ford was born in Maine as Sean Aloysius O’Feeney… or so he says. His birth records say differently, and it would not be the last time he changes his name. As a child, he visits Ireland and falls in love with his heritage, and later fights at the University of Maine when confronted with an Irish slur. He rediscovers his long-lost older brother Francis while watching the “flickers” and follows him to Hollywood. He gets work as his brother’s stunt double then he fibs his way into directing features, eventually making his name on a pair of famous silent Westerns that still astonish today. As Hollywood transitions to talkies, Ford befriends the man who would become his friend, his muse, and his enabler, a young football player named John Wayne.
00:00 - Introduction: Decoding John Ford
07:00 - Irish in Maine
12:07 - Older brother Francis
19:24 - Arriving in Hollywood
28:44 - Stepping behind the camera
31:31 - The Iron Horse
37:54 - Three Bad Men
41:51 - Enter John Wayne
He made John Wayne cry.
He placed a real baby in front of galloping horses.
He was a commander at D-Day, a union leader, and a tyrant.
Meet John Ford, the curmudgeon with an eyepatch who just happened to be the greatest filmmaker of the 20th century. Ford was a bully and a drunk who ruled Hollywood for five decades, making dozens of seminal movies - though he was incredibly hard to pin down. His behavior swung wildly from loyalty to cruelty, without notice. He won more Oscars than any director in history, but never showed up to accept an award. And he rewrote American history, painting the country with images so beautiful that people wished they were real. John Ford defined the attitudes of his time, ideas about masculinity and heroism that we're still grappling with today. This season on The Plot Thickens, TCM brings you Decoding John Ford, a seven-part podcast about cinema's most mysterious auteur.
Part of that mystery is his classified - and missing - WWII film. In 1944, the U.S. military recruited Ford for the assignment of his career: to cover the largest invasion in history. He went to Normandy Beach to film D-Day and created an on-the-ground film detailing the invasion, but the film goes missing. Host Ben Mankiewicz travels to Europe to trace the mystery of whether the D-Day movie exists.
The Plot Thickens is the official podcast from Turner Classic Movies (TCM) about movies and the people who make them. Season one premiered in May 2020, diving into the life and work of Oscar®-nominated director, writer, and actor Peter Bogdanovich. Season two, “The Devil’s Candy,” launched in June 2021 and chronicled the tumultuous production of the 1990 film The Bonfire of the Vanities. Season three uncovered fresh insights into the life and times of the iconic Lucille Ball and debuted in October 2021. Season four explored the life and work of trailblazing actor Pam Grier in fall 2022.
The podcast has garnered more than nine million downloads and several industry awards: it was named a Webby Honoree in 2021 and 2022 and a Webby Nominee in 2023; won best branded podcast from the 2021 Adweek Podcast Awards; and was nominated for best entertainment podcast at the Ambie Awards two years in a row. It has been featured on “best-of” lists from The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, NPR and Vanity Fair.

For his legendary number in IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER ('55), Gene Kelly bought his own roller skates near his house at the time. According to Kelly, the skates were not altered to accommodate his dancing, so he had no "help" when he had to tap. The film was one of the last musicals of MGM’s golden age, and it is that rarest of creatures: a cynical musical. The story follows the misadventures of ...

Marvellous movie Perfect
This is SOO bad - that it's actually pretty good...
Wow, that was nice done! You don't want it to end. 👍
I don't know if anyone else feels the same, but I love that half second of silence before Godzilla lets out its atomic breath for the first time at 1:35. I think it makes the ensuing devastation feel just that much more haunting.
Just like my EVIL SISTER!!!!

Shocked when Ben said "twentieth century fox " in reference to " The Iron Horse " , there was no such animal , it was just FOX , William Fox .

Mel Brooks and Dick Van Dyke continue to amaze at how much ENERGY they display and are both almost a century old! BRAVO!
The way he looks at the camera at 3:30 is cute and kinda horrifying

The Godzilla Is blak the withe the spavn Is look 😮😮😮😮😮
That line “she doesn’t look Mexican either” was a shot at the studio for casting Heston in that role where Welles wanted a more authentic actor. Your analysis falls way short. Gotta ask, did you even watch the movie?
Haha what the reunion hoho
people talk about the atom bombs but even besides that, firebombings killed hundreds of thousands of people across most major cities in japan, and left millions homeless. this movie came out 9 years later. the people in the theater lived this scene.
Who looks worse, Mel Brooks or Joe Biden...
Anybody knows the name of the beautiful girl in green with a pink feather?
too bad they glossed over Rock. he deserved the oscar. he was the main transition throughout the movie and it was really seen from his eye. Dean was a cartoon character.
Here is an observation. He identified with Richard Dreyfuss and wanted to date Terri Garr. Moments later he left his wife for Kate Capshaw who is also a known dirty blond.
why Freeman wearing a glove on one hand?
best ever - time life
I named my cat Pyewacket :D
Still one of the movie I like
Sally field saying that bette davis is to dramatic is comical...bette davis is and will always be one of the best actresses of all time!
Very nice ❤
Great movie even if it is just propaganda for the nuclear technology hoax.
It's a beautiful song. It is my most favourite song in Wizard of Oz of all time and it is one of my favourite 1930s films of all time as well. I've watched Wizard of Oz loads of times and it's absolutely fantastic. This song and the film never get old. They will always be timeless classics. I am listening to it from Ireland 🇮🇪.

Where is the filmed episode?🙄😳🤔😡
I only saw Ishtar for the first time a few years ago. I'm a Gen-Xer, and I remember when it was released and how it was immediately dubbed one of the worst films ever made by so many critics, so I just assumed that it was terrible and never saw it. But when I finally did watch it, I thought it was actually laugh out loud funny. It's not like it's a movie ahead of its time. It would have been just as funny in 1987 had I seen it then. In retrospect, the critical reaction to this movie is baffling. There was definitely an agenda against it, and it shows how the pack mentality of the professional critical establishment works.
That makes me laugh 😂😂😂😂😂
Great

I am almost in 40 and honestly never been in that love ever.... I could even imagine that.... This is absolutely don't care about anything 'feeling' when i fall in love waifu of my life.... Shame i am not in my 15s to get that strong feeling...
