"Stagecoach" includes my favorite cover art from the entire Criterion Collection. Seeing Viggo Mortenson praise this one makes me even more excited for his upcoming Western!

John Wayne referred to Stagecoach as the reference point for all of his later films; he understood the greatest of the film and always sought to match his performance in it. Thirty years later, Sam Pekinpah reinterpreted the western with The Wild Bunch. Both films absolute masterpieces.

Agnes Varda was a brillant human being. That's why she is up there among the few truly genius directors. Her knowledge in fine arts and literature made her lens see and think in a way that was never been translated to film ever before. Originality and style like no other. She knew the subtleties of how films should work for the maker and the audience. La Pointe Court was her first film, and it is considered the first Nouvelle Vague film. It made me smile when he mentioned it. And what an intelligent advice he gave Viggo. Far too many directors are not aware of that..

Stagecoach is a fantastic pick by Viggo Mortensen! Quintessential Western from the great John Ford.

Stagecoach is basically Canterbury tales. Every person represents their part of society.

    Viggo Mortensen
is (unequivocally) the finest actor of the past several generations.
    There can be NO argument.
    🤘🤘🔥💜
His performances bring to life characters which, otherwise, would never exist.
...and they are and remain utterly real.
    💜

The Great Santini is a great movie and one of Robert Duvall's best performances. He's this nasty guy and bully but can also have charisma and be good to his family at times. He's not your typical drunk dad role in movies, he's very realistic and doesn't see himself as a bad guy.

I appreciate Viggo’s acknowledgment of Stagecoach.
After all .., Orson Welles studied the film judiciously before filming Citizen Kane.
But seriously? That shot of the poor fish dying in this TCM video was kinda disturbing.
Aside from that … I would love to get Viggo M’s opinion on the his favorite books.

I was never a Western movie fan until I saw Stagecoach. Adore the cast, the cinematography, the story, and the direction.
I couldn’t watch The Great Santini; too many parallels from my upbringing. (I’m female).

Good job, TCM. I was almost ready to disown you after you got rid of TCM Underground, and the people that worked for.you that developed the program for so long. But I may just give you another chance if you start going this directions. Also......we need Underground back. I'm being serious.

Great movie, I think The Man Who Shot Liberty Vance is my favorite Ford/Wayne movie that they did together. It's basically John Wayne's Unforgiven in many ways and really throws away the rose-colored view on the Old West.

Why not use John Fords my Darling Clementine. It is the tale of Wyatt Earp at the OK Carrel. Victor Mature gives one of his best performance as a Conumptive Doc Holiday. This is a Fox Film, which is one of John Fords best.
