I am old enough to remember when TCM came on against the established AMC in 1994. Memo to Warner Discovery: Don't let TCM become "The Walking Dead", as AMC became. If you forget your history, you'll forget yourself. The industry, as we knew it, is dissolving; much like those nitrocellulose films we can no longer see. TCM prevents that. Keep it going.
❤❤ It irks me they still call themselves AMC. And don't get me started with how they ruined IFC and Sundance and most recently with BBC. TCM is great but I am also starting to notice the changes with the channel I hope it survives.

As long as they stay commercial-free they should be fine. In 2019 for the 25th anniversary, Jennifer Dorian (the GM for TCM) told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "I’ve been part of strategic planning at Turner for 19 years. I can vouch we’ve never questioned the TCM mission or strategy. By staying commercial free, we offered something special to distributors and fans. Those other channels you mentioned [MTV, TLC, AMC] all relied on advertisers and needed to pursue strategies that drew ratings. TCM was liberated from that. Our job was to build a home for classic films that provides distributors a quality commercial-free movie service."
As long as they don't have to cave to advertising dollars, it sounds like they will be able to keep to their core principal
When AMC cancelled Remember WENN I was done with them.
The only channel I consider a must have channel. TCM is the very best.

in these changing times i think many of us look back to these movies with a new appreciation.
Sadly, I cut the cable years ago, so now I've gone the Criterion Channel route to make up for the loss of TCM. A monthly streaming app for TCM would be a welcome addition. The times, they are a changin'.

I hope one day TCM will have a app subscription service because it hurts knowing I don’t have it now since it’s only available on Live TV.
I agree! I held on to cable for so long just because I didn’t want to let go of TCM but at the end I had too. TCM needs to be available on a streaming service (Max has a TCM section but it’s not like the actual channel)
Criterion app will help a little with that.

I was a little kid when TCM launched. My thing was Nick at Nite. TCM was next level. You turned me on to movie magic and the idea that history didn’t begin when I was born. I’ll always love TCM. You kept a lonely kid company.
I was 29 when Turner Classic Movies launched. When it launched I was already a classic movie enthusiast, and now thanks to TCM I am a classic movie aficionado and amateur film historian. I've Loved TCM since the day it launched annual remain an Ardent fan until my last day. Thanks TCM for keeping the classics alive.

About 9 years ago I went to a screening of Dodsworth and Mr Robert Osborne was the guest speaker. He was older and walked slower but his mind was sharp and his stories were so amazing. I must admit that I recorded most of his interview on my phone (even though it said on the ticket that it wasn’t allowed) but I knew he didn’t have too much time left, so I don’t regret it one bit, I deeply admired Mr Osborne for introducing me to so many movies that I never watched before, the way he presented each movie and the little stories behind the scenes captivated me. Rest in Peace Mr Osborne thank you for sharing your movie knowledge with newer generations like me.

Thanks for all you folks have done over the years. TCM has been critical to my development as a film fan from a very young age. This type of authorship has always been so important.

My favorite channel
TCM had a wonderful interview with Lew. Ayres a year before his passing. It can still be seen on CZcams. Look out for it.
This year the network did not play their annual Dr. Kildare Marathon. What a shame. Metro's B Unit was the bread and butter to the Metro Studios.
What a shame that TCM forgot to play the Kildare Series.
Aside from Dr. Kildare series and the early noir Fingers at the Window, Lew Ayers talent was wasted at MGM by placing him some very awful movies such as the Ice Capades of 1939.

My cable company (Spectrum) priced TCM out of my budget. It's one of the reasons I am considering cutting the cable. I wish there was a way where I could just pay a subscription to TCM because I would SO DO THAT!!!
Fan of TCM! Sometimes I just watch to hear the interesting introductions of the movies.
I was almost 21 when this channel launched, and maybe the only person in my age-group of friends who was excited, because I was brought up on old movies, the classic black and whites that you could only catch very late Friday or Saturday night as the Friday/Saturday Night Movie on TV. Being in Atlanta meant we would get this new channel earlier than most, though I think it was still another year before our specific cable provider added it to the lineup.
When I had my own apartment in 2000 and no one to fight over control of the TV with, money was tight, so I did without cable for about a year. But then I remembered...Erroll Flynn's birthday was coming up, and that meant I had a reliable place to go where I could record The Sea Hawk and Captain Blood and The Adventures of Robin Hood and Elizabeth and Essex and more of his films, especially the swashbucklers, WITHOUT COMMERCIALS, so I didn't have to be home in order to get them on tape finally (because there was a lot of old films I wanted that just weren't available on VHS at that time, and this was back when Amazon just sold BOOKS). So I went down to the apt. management office and said to yes, go ahead and add cable to my rent, please, and when would it be hooked up? Then I went to the store and dipped into my budget to buy a 10-pack of 8-hour VHS tapes, because after Erroll Flynn day, there was Maureen O'Hara, and before either of them there were going to be Katharine Hepburn and John Wayne and Rosalind Russell...
I loved that certain stars I always enjoyed had an entire day set aside to focus on their films, or when they might get 2 films a night spread over a week shown in their honor. And then ofc there was the fantastically gorgeous Gone With The Wind, which as an Atlanta native I was obsessed with as a teen. I was a Star Wars girl who was also in love with classic films, whose first ever star crush was Guy Williams in Disney's Zorro TV series, but Cary Grant ran him a VERY close second. As someone who adored costumes, particularly the looks of the 30s and 40s when jazz was still huge and the Big Band Sound was all the rage, classic movies spoke to me, DEEPLY, and TCM was addictive for me. To this day, I still have a large collection of recorded-from-TCM films sitting in a box...I just have no way to watch them, lol.

TCM is my favorite - but I would really love a TCM streaming only service - I would totally pay for it as a stand alone - because I don't pay for cable. Please make it streaming!
So many great movies and amazing actors we never would have seen. And all the background intros, the documentaries and a chance to really watch those iconic moments in film. TCM has hugely increased awareness of the need for film preservation. Thank you TCM.
TCM is a selective classic network. They mostly show films that they own. You will not know who Tyrone Power was about or any other actors who did not contract with its owned studios. Therefore, the public never knows about the wealth of talent from other studios.
I remember the day in 1997 I went to Radio Shack and dropped $700.00 for a DirecTV satellite dish just so that I could have Turner Classic Movies. I was there for the premiere of TNT in 1988, and that was fantastic. But, TCM was phenomenal. From 1997 to 2005, I truly was in "Movie Heaven." Letterboxing was a big deal to people like me who couldn't afford laserdiscs, which were frequently letterboxed as opposed to VHS which typically were not. The shorts and trailers and bumpers and "words of mouth" ensured every broadcast moment was entertaining.
My cable system includes TCM only with the sports package. I do not watch sports at all but I do watch TCM everyday! 😅
Was hooked on TCM from the moment my cable provider made it available in 1997. So great to see so many familiar faces of TCM people I’ve met at their film festivals and cruises - both in front of and behind the camera. Happy 30th Birthday TCM ! 🎂May you always continue to inspire ! ❤💋❤

I didn't realize it at the time but I had started watching TCM from day one!! I was in my 30's and going through a very tough time in my life. I stumbled onto TCM by accident and fell in love. First as an escape from my pain getting to watch ALL of these FABULOUS old movies, then getting educated by the one and only Robert Osborne, the BEST educator I ever had!!! I do miss Robert BUT TCM has evolved into a steady, constant, comfort (still) in my life. Now I'm being educated by 5, each with special knowledge and talent only they can bring to my continued dedication of my FAVORITE channel on cable!!! FYI: I was shocked when I realized that I was one of the original viewers/fans of this incredible channel 30 yrs ago!!! Love still, Patty R. ✨💖✨
Turner Classic Movies was the greatest cable TV movie channel ever. They have RKO, MGM and Warner Bros. movies and they also have other studio movies like Disney, 20th Century-Fox, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures and Sony Pictures including Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures titles.

@@ArpiChatalian They can't show movies they don't own or license. Turner doesn't own the Paramount Library. They license certain movies but own the entire film libraries of certain studios only.
TCM can get many of the pre 1949 Library from Universal that owns the historic Paramount Library. The Paramount films show up on You tube frequently.
Here are some great Paramount titles such as City Streets, Death Takes a Holiday and Peter Ibbetson and many more, which includes classic Claudette Colbert comedies such as The Gilded Lily and the fantastic Midnight that has a wonderful performance by John Berrymore.
Happy 30th Anniversary! It was great to see Robert Osborne's movie intros yesterday on this anniversary celebration. I've been watching TCM for the entire 30 years and have attended several film festivals as well. Wouldn't it be great to see some of Robert's original introductions on the movies shown throughout the day which have no intros? Please consider showing some of these intros! I'm sure many fans besides myself would enjoy them! Thank you.

When I 1st discovered TCM-I was totally enthralled with it. I remember calling my mom and telling her about TCM. We didn't know how long it would be around. We thought maybe it was just last for a couple months. So, my mom started taping the channel during the day & i would tape in the evening. We had so many TCM tapes between us- it was crazy. I still love TCM as much as I did when I 1st started watching it. It's the best station that ever was.

The movie collection that I have, in terms of physical copies, was largely put together because of TCM. They inspired me to take a closer look at titles that I had only just heard of. And for that, I thank them.
I recall late Friday night some years back when TCM had their bizzaro programming called UNDERGROUND. The feature one night was a late 60's gem that took me by surprise....

I am so grateful for Turner Classic Movies. I don't have cable anymore, but I follow this CZcams channel. My love of classic movies inspired my theatre career, and still does. People tell me I'd make a wonderful TCM host. I hope I can at most, audition.

I hope that TCM starts to stream independently from cable companies. To access TCM you have to pay exorbitant cable fees only to watch TCM. Please go to streaming!!! It is the only channel I miss when cancelling my cable tv.

I LOVE TCM from when I first found it in the mid 90's it was the only reason why I would take cable on. I miss Robert Osborn so much, but he lives on 24/7 with TCM broadcasting. Along with all the other wonderfull hosts. The only thing I want to ask is Please start a streaming app. Just of what is currently playing on TCM at the time. cable is over $100 a month in Canada and all I want is TCM..

I love TCM. I watched it for many years. Sadly, when I cut cable years ago I could not watch it any longer. Why can’t I stream without a TV provider? That really stinks. Shame on you, TCM. The few services that carry it have in an expensive bundle with a lot of channels that I have no interest in watching. I’d pay for just TCM but don’t want all the other crap channels that are offered with it.

Love this channel. Furious at my cable provider for shuffling it off onto an extra tier with a series of sports channels, thus guaranteeing that I will not be a subscriber because I don't care about sports. Wish TCM was a streamer; I would jump on it like a puma on prey.
TCM changed my life, I'm from Brazil and I started with classic movies because of this channel, so I'm forever grateful. So sad that today I can't even see the site because I'm not from USA, but beautiful video ❤

The origins of TCM dates back to 1986 when Ted Turner acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) from Kirk Kerkorian. However, his debt load and other financial problems resulted Turner to sell MGM back to Kerkorian but retained the studio's film library - which comprised of MGM (pre-May 1986), Warner Bros. (pre-1948), and the North American distribution rights to RKO Radio Pictures. Thus, Ted Turner founded Turner Entertainment.
Turner would use the acquired film libraries to launch its first basic cable network Turner Network Television (TNT) on October 3, 1988, with the 1939 Warner Bros. film "Gone with the Wind" being as the first program aired on the network.
TCM was launched on April 14, 1994 at 6PM E.T., with Ted Turner launching the channel at a ceremony in New York City's Times Square district. The date and time were chosen for their historical significance as "the exact centennial anniversary of the first public movie showing in New York City". The late Robert Osborne launched TCM with "Gone with the Wind" as the first film aired on the network and the rest is history.

How come TCM is not recognizing Tiffany Vasquez? Tiffany was once a TCM host as well, but this network is not even mentioning Tiffany Vasquez on any of it's celebration footages. What gives? Did something happen? Any explanation would be greatly appreciated. Peace!
I think they're minimizing the uproar that occurred when Turner starting colorizing the old black-and-white classics.

Longtime TCM fan. I've really learned a lot from the hosts' introductions, especially Eddie Muller's for Noir Alley. Have become quite a fan and look forward to it Saturday nights. One little tweak I'd appreciate is indicating whether or not a particular film will be available On Demand. Many a time I've missed out on a film that is rarely shown, because I thought it would be available to me later at a more convenient time. That said, I hope TCM lasts for at least another 30 years and I would certainly subscribe if it went to independent streaming.
Where else can you literally see 100 years of acting everyday, not to mention centuries of life

I still love TCM, and I think the programming has remained solid (I appreciate the expansion of the movies into somewhat more current and obscure fare, while remaining true to the core of classics which is the networks’s bread and butter). But I dislike the graphic rebrand! What was once tied directly to TCM’s mission is now flat and generic… sigh! But the movies are the most important thing.
I love TCM. Whatever happened to 'THE UNDERGROUND" on Friday nights? That is where you could see something really wacky and outrageous.
As a kid I despised this channel a lot, and as an adult, I wish I had TCM.

I used to watch TCM as a 14 year old here in Poland through the Astra satellite. I barely I knew any English at the time, but loved those B/W images. Then TCM became TNT while still having a good selection of films through the day, now it's called Warner TV with old TV shows from 5AM to 8PM and a couple of mediocre movies from the 1990s nobody would even bother to watch. TV is dying I suppose...
@0:01 That theme music is way better than the horrible melancholy music that sounds like something from "He Who Gets Slapped" or "Freaks" that they play now to introduce a movie. Why not just play the score from Sunset Blvd when she cuts her wrists? Or when Monty gets the death sentence in "A Place In The Sun?" Whoever chose that music should be forced to listen to it 24/7.
Cable is dying. AMC relied on commercials and couldn’t sustain such a niche audience. TCM won’t change. It will just go away with the rest of cable.

(Imo) films can be for entertainment. But (imho) its reams more important and meaningful if they teach and are didactic.

It's too bad that you need cable or YTT or HLv to get TCM. Even with Max you only get a smattering of TCM library. I would subscribe to an online TCM if it were offered.
