Hey Joe (from Australia).. You truly are a breath of fresh air when it comes to teaching. I too, see art in everything I look at and it never ceases to amaze me how many different things I find inspiration from. You as a teacher, has now given me more tools to explore and put my ideas to canvas.. To me, YOU are to ART (in the way you speak with passion and knowledge) as what Brian Cox is to the Planets & Space. THANKYOU SO MUCH... :-)
Joe, for sure is a pleasure all of us listen to you and learn from you such wonderful things you show and teach us. I'm so grateful for all your vídeos I started watching today. May True God blesses you and your Art. Thank you!
Good god, the information that comes from your brain is the best information I've ever heard when it comes to painting. I could find the same information eventually but I'm sure it would take a lot of time, research or schooling to compile everything together that I get out of just 5 minutes of your videos. I already bought your painting videos (the only CZcamsr I've ever made the exception to purchase from thus far, and I watch A LOT of artist CZcamsr's lol) but I can't express enough how much your information seriously helps me. That halves/double rule and the way you break things down is so simple yet so thoughtful at the same time. I know I have asked you this before, but how did you formulate all of this information? Is it stuff you learned yourself? Schooling? Another artist? All of the above? I'm very curious. I just want to add how much I truly appreciate you sharing your knowledge and I genuinely look up to you as an artist not only in skill but in your way of thinking too.
+Sarahs Awesome Art (Sarah Foor) Thank you for that great compliment. And thank you for the shout out for my videos. I really appreciate that. To answer the question, I think I just have a very relentless sense of wonder about things and never stop thinking about the questions. I just think that my questions tend to be about the littlest things that others may not be concerned with. I believe everything in nature is designed and created with great skill and for a purpose and so it thrills me to think about it all the time. I think I could tell a story about every time I realized something new just because it's always such an exciting moment for me.
You've pretty much said word for word what I was going to say Sarah. I don't get how your mind can just understand and remember how light reacts in any given situation Joe.
Thank you for all of the knowledge, I have been watching all of your videos for the past few weeks. Watching a scene, going to the canvas and trying your technique until I got a good understanding of it and then watching more of the video. I have progressed so much with my painting skills and I owe it all to you, thank you!
Joe, I keep learning and learning from you. Please don't stop. Even though you may change what you say as you learn, I get to add those ideas like arrows into my quiver and learn faster with your help.
I have been painting for years and have created some good work but with your brilliant observations and phenomenal painting skills I am learning a lot and can't wait to dig in and get painting. I am hoping that I can elevate the level of my work from good to great with your awesome insight.
As a 70 year old muralist I feel that you are an excellent teacher and resource, often I look at your work to refresh and remind, as well as learn about techniques. Thanks.
I so appreciate the values that you share with us. What comes across is. Not what the eye perceived as one colour but in actual fact it’s a different colour (not green). Thank you.
thank you so much! this is most of what we went over in my {free} co-op homeschool class and it even related to the science book we are on. To tie in science with Art, bonus! You truly are amazing!
Love your videos and your non presumptuous attitude and willingness to share your knowledge and talent. Trust me I understand what talent is: Talent =perspiration meets inspiration.
I read 3 books about perspective and I never learned the half-double rule. I really love your videos in general but this time, you just made my day. Thank you very much!
thanx joe I have learned so much from ur art and descriptions my art is my zen and I just got into this type of painting I was doing spray art and airbrushing so this was great for me to learn from u keep it coming as I watched bob ross I now watch u paint thanx for sharing
You are awesome, i have learned from you how i can paint water, waves and mix colors. And I learned a lot of other elementary knowledge. As a teacher, I can say that your teaching methods are successful. If I have time to practice what I have learned from you, I'll share it with you. God bless you.
Joe... One of my favorite things to paint are waves and in the past I have struggled to achieve a believable effect especially when it can to refraction and foam. Your tutorials are fantastic and have helped because of the way you break it down to almost a science. Thank you for helping me improve by leaps and bounds!
Honestly, I learn a mind boggling amount of information from you! Ever grateful for your desire and willingness to help us... best teacher I’ve ever had! Thank you!
Your tutorials have really helped me, a beginner painter, make things look more realistic. I will continue to refer to them over and over again during my painting process. It's especially helped me make my trees look better. I do have a question for you though, how would one paint exposed roots on a tree? Do you put park on them like the rest of the tree? How does one paint the shadows and highlights? Just some questions that a tutorial video could really help me with for my next painting. :) Keep rocking!
You are an amazingly talented artist Joe. EVERY time I see your waves I want to dive in. Everything looks so real and beautiful. You inspire me to paint.
The half and doubles rule is perfect and really brings a realism to paintings, fantastic job Joe!! Only thing is I'm now gazing at the sky wondering how we see stars at all! #FoodForThought
I love the way you explain things. You teach so much in one sentence. I'm really into the in depth understanding of painting and you articulate knowledge precisely how I learn best.
Wow, the amount of information for varying situations that you think of while painting is amazing! Simply amazing! I've never seen paintings as well as yours, and it's a blessing to hear your perspective on painting. I was wondering if you could do a color theory video? I love colored art, but my entire art career I've always done black and white realism, and I have no idea how to read a color wheel or even make the colors if like to with a minimal pallet. If you could make such a video i would very much appreciate it! Keep up the amazing work!
Wow. Thank You for this lesson. I have a degree in illustration, from a top private art college and they never taught this. Your videos are more informative than any illustration class I attended. 🙏
Ive been watching a lot of your videos over the past few weeks and I think my problem is that I have always expressed my art in pencil. After trying Acrylics I think I'm trying to draw it rather than paint it. I was finding it really hard to blend any colours to get the effect you achieve when blending. So I purchased a Windsor and newton Slow drying medium & learned to cover my canvas before I start in white to give me that wet on wet blending texture. I have achieved some good blending but find the whole color wheel you do, hard work & need to get my head around it. Shading in pencil is easy:) Dark & light:). I really love your work & how you teach so thank you..
I am so excited to research how colors of light blend! that is a brilliant idea! My goodness..... I seriously was kinda racking my brain because i imagined that would affect my scene (first time I wondered about light - not as shadow and reflection)..... and now I ran into you saying this..... but i didn't consciously know this really is an effect... and it is!! maybe you know what I am saying. the discoveries of what nature is doing does not end ....... we can go on and on learning about details and odd things.... Seriously thank you for sharing your passion with us Joe, enormous gratitude and strokes of inspiration 🌞..... I am so excited I made a little pun. I am starting to believe indeed --- we are all creators and can learn to paint beauty in our way as long as we keep painting! Each video is as draw dropping great as the other! ha
You are such an amazing artist! I absolutely love your videos and all the things I learn with them. Pleeease, pay someone to write brazilian portuguese subtitles for your videos so I can share them, and all your knowledge, with my friends here in Brazil 😍!!
Excellent step by step description of a very good piece of Art. I've been watching your composition as well. You should also include how you came the composition of your work. I think you are very talented at, pardon the expression, " Making Waves" without question. I admire your talent. The way you didn't spare any detail in describing your work is highly commendable. That's what separates you from the rest. Great job. Keep posting them.
OMG,those 2 paintings are so so gorgeous, a step by step tutorial would help me out so much, english is not my mother language, in most cases i have to watch multiple times to just get it and waves are such a pain for me. But again what a beautiful paintings you have created, just awesome!
+Medina Elsayed Wow! Your English skills are to be commended. I would never have known English was not your primary language. The only issue is the punctuation & capitalization but this is the internet so most of us do not care about that too much. Great job!
+Medina Elsayed Thank you very much for the nice compliment Medina. I'm doing my best to get some good tutorials out. Have you looked at my site, learn.muraljoe.com? If you can't afford what you see there, email me at joe@muraljoe.com. I appreciate you watching my videos!
Just discovered your videos and was impressed with your understanding of the physical properties of light. the spectrum and the human eye. I tkink you are also quite gifted. howabout some more paint brush tricks? Color theory 32,160 views plus me WOW. Keep up the good work.
I can only imagine, the person who gave you a dislike....hit the wrong button! I love watching your videos, how you just slap a 2 inch brush around like you're treating a garden fence and for a short while, you think WTF, then BOOM.......MASTERPIECE, followed by us all saying "no way, that's insane, how to hell did he do that". you are also a great teacher and nice guy too! keep up the great work.
So much relevant information that I had to concentrate but it makes sense. Thanks, totally appreciate you sharing your valuable wisdom and love your work!
Continue with these detailed explanations, they're super valuable. Great job, thank you! I'm hoping to see a city scape and explanation about that, I'm struggling with that more than nature because of the strict lines and values.
It's amazing! Thank you from Russia. Your channel is the same channel i realy like. I'm trying draw with oil as well as you. I am not everything understand but i try))
Amazing painting, though i would have loved it more if there was distinct separation between top of the wave and the horizon/sky. I don't know how to achieve that, may be by darkening edge of the wave a little bit? Will it still look real? Thanks for breaking things down, very educative! Thank you for sharing!
I started painting with watercolor. Then I switched to acrylic. Finally I tried oils. Each switch, for me, was almost like re-learning to paint. The mediums are so different. Bob Ross inspired me to try oils. It came out horrible. I went back to acrylics. I see you didn't have that problem transitioning though. Awesome paintings.
+Mark Brown Hey thanks for sharing that Mark. I re-painted a lot before I made these videos so to be fair, I did have some trouble. My paintings are based on color and shape placement more than brush techniques I think. So perhaps that transfers mediums more easily.
Hi Joe, I read an old comment where you said you paint on masonite. Silly question, but do you paint on the smooth side or the textured side? Also, I haven't seen you "tone" your surface before painting, I'm just starting out on large paintings landscape paintings and was wondering if its a bit of an unnecessary step? It's a lot of paint other wise! Any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you for your videos, you're very generous and your passion is motivating and inspiring.
Your sense of wonder and enthusiasm is just so infectious Joe. Thank you so much for sharing those gifts.
