Thank you so very much for teaching this. I am 60 years old. And I have painted murals since I was a teenager. But I always had a hard time with painting waves. I've been to several art colleges, and schools, and never, ever, had a professor, or instructor, teach this. You have taught it in a way that is clear, logical, and simple, so that anybody could understand this subject that to many artists, myself included, see has hard, complex, and impossible to paint realistically. Thank you again not only for this video, but for all of your videos. It is very much appreciated.
There are just few painters out there who can explain thoroughly the principle behind how things in the world works. I think this is very essential. Others simply explain the how of painting but you both explain the how and the why. You're great. Thumbs up. My deep admiration goes to you.
Man the way you explain techniques and the reasons behind what your doing as you do it is perfection. Makes it so much easier to understand and interpret on to my own canvas.
I’ve just started trying to paint waves and watched lots of videos from accomplished artists, but this video, how you have explained it,is absolutely perfect. This is how every tutorial should be! I’ve just subscribed to your channel. We’ll done…brilliant
At first when you did the little waves connected together to make the bigger wave , I didn't see it. It was until I stepped back to see what you were doing that I saw the wave. It was truly amazing. I thank you for this little artistic lesson/tip. It was really needed.
Mural Joe, you are not an artist. You are an art scientist! It just shows how much of passion you have. I truly appreciate the time you take to make these videos so that others can learn. I personally find your videos EXTREMELY helpful and learning from you has DRASTICALLY improved my own artistic ability. You are my favourite artist on CZcams at the moment!! I look up to you as mentor
Like Ace, I have studied in the best schools in Manhattan and never have received such clean instruction based on reality...i.e. the science of a wave translated into painting one. Thank you for a great lesson.
Joe, "You're simply the best, better than all the rest! Better than anyone! Anyone I ever met!"-Tin Turner. I have been a viewer for years. YOU are the one who got me into painting. THANK YOU. I have never quit and love it more each day. I live in Santa Barbara my native town, and I am OBSESSED with the beach and with PAINTING WAVES. I was reviewing these videos I discovered of yours years ago, and the Tina Turner song just comes to mind when I watch your videos. Joe, you are SIMPLY THE BEST! Thank you for teaching me to paint, it has saved my life. Still wish I could meet you someday. It would be my dying wish. (My posts used to be under Paula Ellis but I am back to my maiden name.) If you are ever in Santa Barbara with your family look me up, I'll be your tour guide.
Interesting how small pieces can come together to look so complex. I was struggling so much with creating deep water. I'm so happy with your instruction. I finally love my painting! Thanks Joe!!
Yes! A very thorough explanation of how waves are painted. I’ve been wanting to paint waves in watercolor, but they’ve never seemed to look right when I would paint them. Thanks for this!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, i have been struggling with painting bodies of water and this helped me out a bunch! I'm still young and have a long way to go before i'm just as good as you but your tutorials have helped me through many paintings i had yet to complete. Thanks a bunch yet again!
Thank you for not just sharing your techniques but also for explaining in detail why that technique should be used and how. You clearly understand the subjects you paint on a level most artists dont bother with
Wow -- I'm so grateful I spotted your hand shape in Lesson 3 and decided to listen (and Learn) to your video. I paint in watercolour but it's gonna be a translation from Acrylic/Oil to digest this information. I'm watching this Lesson 1 again and again and may end up using a gouache to finish the light-throwing tops of the waves. I've struggled with this technique - only to produce 'flat' looking paintings, put them aside and try again with same results....now, I can't wait for the weekend to try your technique and incorporate into watercolour. Thanks so much. I subscribed to your channel so I'll get all the tips I can digest to my lifelong learning of painting - I'm 68 and have only begun 7 years ago to fill my semi-retirement days!
Thank you so so much for your information here. I just found you and your art, it is all so beautiful. Thank you again for taking the time to share and teach us in such detail; it is this detail that helps me to actually make a wave. Someone could show me all day long but without the explanations that you're giving, I won't learn. I might mimic to a degree but my waves still would not look like waves. In understanding the things is what helps me to come close to painting a recognizable picture. But it still won't be as beautiful as yours. You're so good at this, in making it all look so real. I love that in a painting. You're the man, one of the uniquely true painters, like my brothers, Bob and Ray.
Painting was my hobby right from school days. When I grew up I had a passion for oil paintings. But there were nobody to guide me. More over my profession was totally different which limited my devotion to painting. Now I am 67 and have enough time to spent with guidance from You tube. I am grateful to You tube for clearing my doubts during my painting sessions.
Joe, I continue to learn and learn from your videos. THANK YOU. Today, I've learned to alter my brush *size* which is making my life miserable :) It's all about technique. Even when one has been painting for years, there is *always* something to learn and to improve upon. Really appreciate your contributions here!
Thank you so much I really needed a video like this. Had a hard time painting oceans because I couldn't totally understand how reflection and movement of waves actually work. Now that I get it, gotta start practicing.!
Thankyou so much for this, I'm 13 years old and I've been having a lot of difficulties in painting waves! Now, I'm always going to paint them step by step just as you explained! 🤗
I’m 50 years old and failed art way back in school. Hated it with a passion. About 6 months ago I started to paint acrylic on canvas. Self taught throuyBob Ross. Then I came across you and I attempted your waves and I am so glad that I did. Thanks to you Joe 👩🎨
Very cool, thanks! Going to go try this after watching the first two videos, I'm more of an airbrusher but have some acrylics/watercolors/brushes over the years collecting dust. I'll watch the rest later. I love water, and the ocean!
I have a blue truck, and I work for a water department for my city, and I have been wanting to hand-paint my truck to have this particular kind of water pattern on it, and this is the only video out of a dozen or so others I've watched that really give me the pattern element I have been looking for; most of the others are trying to color- and shape-match some reference material, but I don't want reference material; I want the actual technique of the pattern so I can recreate it indefinitely all the way around, and this is the first one I found that really digs into the theory element of the wave concept, and this is what I've been looking for; thanks so much
Hello to you from mumbai India .. your passion is worth the mention ,, so is your tutorial . After a few minutes into the video, I soon realised that a beginner like me will take some time before recreating these waves. I still went ahead and saw the entire riveting video .. a big heartfelt thank you .
Thanks so much! I'm about to paint waves and have been looking for a teacher - and you are it! The way you explain the shape of the waves is excellent. I'm not scared to try now. Yaay! :)
Omg you just made me have a Eureka moment. Seriously TY for explaining this! Been asked to do a wave and yeah I’m pretty confident about wave creation now! TY!
you blow me away.. I wish I could get these waves to look like yours I keep practicing but the just look fake and childlike. but I'm not giving up. thanks for the lessons, you are amazing
Not sure if you're working with oils, but it helps to blend your paints with a dry brush, or do an underpainting outline of where your darker color should be with a paint thinner and some burnt sienna (it absorbs into the gesso layer so it doesn't distort the color). I recommend also watching Lena Danya's videos if you're using oils specifically. I use Joe's videos to grasp the concepts of shapes more so than I do color, because he has a unique technique that's hard for me to imitate and my own pieces looked fake, but Lena's videos are very helpful in terms of depth perception and its involvement in realism.
You should be a teacher in Art school. The way you explain are so easy to understand an logical I never seen or meet any artist or art teachers can explain so clear like you, or may be they didn't know. Thanks a lot for your all video lessons it help me a lot.
Hello Joe, love your passion for sharing your creative mind. It encourages me to pursue my favorite body of nature and that is water effects. They are by far the hardest for me to bring to life in a painting. And I'm no where near of being an artist. By any chance do you have a video showing how storm waves are created in a painting. God bless my brother
Thank you so much for the lesson. So helpful to see your technique and helps me build on my own technique using some of the info you provided. Love your videos!
You can tell at times he had trouble explaining but I did indeed understand perfectly what he meant and I’m so happy I know how to paint a realistic wave-which I’m gonna to practice thank you!
It amazes me how those tiny strikes just magically turned into a really realistic wave 👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you so very much for teaching this. I am 60 years old. And I have painted murals since I was a teenager. But I always had a hard time with painting waves. +muraljoe how you get a canvas that size??
Thanks
zhao, you can make it yourself.

I love your work, the perspective and the effort you go to make the painting
Yay!!! I can finally finish my painting , instead of just redoing the water a million times!!! Love it!!! Love You!!!
At first when you did the little waves connected together to make the bigger wave , I didn't see it. It was until I stepped back to see what you were doing that I saw the wave. It was truly amazing. I thank you for this little artistic lesson/tip. It was really needed.

Thank you for not just sharing your techniques but also for explaining in detail why that technique should be used and how. You clearly understand the subjects you paint on a level most artists dont bother with
