Chris- This is the most comprehensive shaving brush care video I’ve seen to date. I wasn’t aware of the Simpson (I’ve never owned one personally) guidelines on splaying a knot while in use. I’m sure I’ve lost hair from my synthetic hair brush from splaying too aggressively. Duly noted. ✍🏻✅

Thanks Bradly. Most of the natural hair brushes used to come with care instructions that were similar to Simpsons. They really prefer that you paint but there's almost no one that doesn't swirl:) Stay safe and have a great weekend.
Great video! I know that I learned a thing or to. I prefer synthetics, simply for the ease of maintenance. I also do not keep my natural hair brushes in bathroom due to the steam from the showers.
That's a good tip as well Jim. I don't keep mine in the bathroom either.

Thanks Chris, really useful video! I saw Cris from another cut above do a similar video a while ago too with the same technique. The eye opener for me was when the bristles still clumped together (even a little bit) it was a sign that there’s still a little bit of soap left in the brush. So your point about rinsing even longer than you think you need (and using warm water to dissolve the fats in the soap) is so true
Yes, I totally agree. Cris also listens for the soap sound in his brushes when he squeezes it. That's another good technique.

Great tips, Chris. That's almost exactly what I do. After I rinse and squeeze out excess water, I gently squeeze the knot a couple of time in a dry towel to wick away as much water as possible, then I do the paint thing.

I used Gorilla Glue to attach neodymium magnets to bottom of my brush handles. I let them hang upside down from my shower curtain rail.
If you don't have a shower curtain rail (walk in shower) any shelf that magnets will attach to will also work.
It freed up a lot of space in my shave den. I hope this idea will be helpful for some of my fellow wet shavers. Stay safe!
That's a cool idea. Interesting enough, I just ordered some strong round magnets from amazon to attack used blades to and so on.

One other thing I do is use a very wide-toothed comb and gently run it through the knot to get rid of any tangling especially natural hair brushes, emphasis on very gently.

I’ve always instinctively cleaned and dried my brush the same way. Who knows maybe I learned it from you back in the day 😊
I think a lot of it is common sense to be honest Ali. I've always done it this way. I also never soaked my brushes above the handle without being told, it just didn't seem smart. This was especially the case with wooden brushes. One of the first brushes I had was a Semogue 1305 and it didn't seem like a good idea to submerge the handle.
Great tips and advice Chris, I use Pantene shampoo and conditioner on my brushes every month to clean them. Your right I’ve noticed that white build up on my Yaqi synthetic brush like you mentioned. This is advice is gold:)

Yes, I don't think people paid attention to them. Most of them used to come with instructions that were similar to the one I showed from Simpson. All of us ignore it mostly:)

Hi Chris. Very informative video. I'm a synthetic guy myself, I think they look nicer, less expensive and easier to care for. I like what you said about mashing down far on the brush while lathering, I've found that with synthetics if you do that it will eventually put an uneven space in the middle of knot over time. Anyway, great video. Cheers!

I mostly paint as well. I do a little swirling and back and forth at the beginning but I paint quite a bit after that.

So helpful for new DE shavers. How often do you wash your brush and what do you use as a cleaner? I saw some recommend a mix of Borax and white vinegar solution. I have used that on other things and it will clean well and esp. get out smell. Others say to just use some dish soap maybe with an oxy component.
For deep cleaning I've used a vinegar and water mixture before and it worked fine. I believe Geofatboy has a video on that. I don't think I'd use borox but that's just me:) Zingari Man also makes a brush cleaning soap but I haven't tried it yet.

I've never had a badger brush, though I do have a couple of boars, which I hardly ever use anymore. I'm afraid I'm spoiled by the quality, low cost and easy maintenance of the synthetics.
I'm spoiled like you are. Honestly there is no compelling reason for me to use natural hair, ever. I'm giving all my natural hair brushes to The Inspector except one. I'm keeping one for sentimental reasons.
I feel like I'm a masher so maybe I'm better off with synthetics. I would like to get a nice badger brush one day though
Honestly, most of them will hold up quite a well even if you abuse them. I've only had one badger fail in 7-8 years. I just don't like using natural hair brushes. I've been through most of them and never really found one I loved relative to synthetics.
I tend to flick my brushes like they're an aspergillum. Lol
After unsuccessfully trying to load my Everest 4 band supermodel badger using only painting strokes and no swirling i gave up at the twenty minute mark, swore and just used a shave stick instead. This traditional shaving is hard - no wonder there was a depression!

haha. I think some swirling is required for loading. It's very difficult to load without swirling. I think the key is not to mash the knot clear to the handle whilst swirling:)

The glue is usually an epoxy of some sort that's made to withstand water. Rinsing and using won't hurt it at all. Soaking in very hot water above the glue or not allowing it to dry properly can potentially hurt it. Even if you abuse the knot most of them will hold together for quite a while. They are pretty durable generally. Hand tied knots seem to be the most fragile.
Does a little bit of dried blood is hazrdous.
If it's your own I cannot imagine it would be hazardous.

I clean my brushes with steel wire brush and oven cleaner. Gotta get all the nasty uckies and knots out. my razors get sandpaper and paint thinner, damn calcium. A little silver paint fixes any oopsies I may make

It definitely works. It will adjust to fit even a massive brush. It holds a razor on the other side as well.
