- Playoff baseball is the best baseball. We can all agree on that. But every once in a while, the regular season lines up so perfectly, so dramatically, that it creates a situation you'll never find in the postseason. We're talking about a simultaneous, multi-team, multi-game horserace to the finish line. To understand just how wild that can be, look no further than the final night of the 2011 MLB season.
We begin, as always, at the end. In extra innings of a tied Yankees-Rays game in Florida, Evan Longoria stands at the plate with a chance to walk off for the win ... and a playoff spot. The fact that things even got to that point is ridiculous. It depended on Tampa rallying into wild card position throughout September. It depended on the Boston Red Sox falling apart. Tonight, it depended on the miserable Baltimore Orioles choosing to give it their all just for the fun of it ... and perhaps getting some help from a former Ray. It depended on Longoria and his teammates-- some of them rather obscure-- making one last push in a historic month-long rally.
"Game 162" was one of the coolest nights in baseball history. Before we watch Evan Longoria try to end it, let's rewind.

Clearly no appreciation for the magnitude of the night lol; I was an RA and ran an event for a WS game and it happened to be the LAD/BOS one that went 18 innings, I joined in on late night cheers haha

It doesn't help that immediately that following season they added the second wild card to create the fake drama of a yearly one game playoff which makes a night like this one meaningless. Had it happened one year later, the Cards/Braves and Rays/Red Sox would have simply played each other in a probably completely forgettable one game playoff
I was in Tampa visiting family at that time. I’m a Yankees fan but I just knew that this was a huge game so I made the effort to go. The Yankees already clinched the 1 seed so I was actually rooting hard against them because I wanted to see the Red Sox eliminated. Going to the game ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Despite all the Yankees games I’ve seen in person, my favorite one was this game where they lost.

I'm curious, though. Unless he was injured or something, why was #53 pitching for the Yankees in the 9th? Where was Mariano Rivera that night? What was Girardi's logic for that? I just find it curious that the Yankees wouldn't give the ball to the greatest closer baseball will ever have.
@@uncreative5766 Probably figured, hey, we already have the 1 seed clinched, and Mo probably just closed one of the last two games we played. Let's give him a day off because playoffs are around the corner. The only thing the Yankees stood to gain from this game was keeping Boston out of the postseason, and to do that they had to lose anyways...
And my Sox still won 2 WS after that while the Yankees continue to choke. 😂

The point of a rewinder is that it takes a look back at something that happened a while ago, they are “rewinding.” This happened like a few days ago
The only piece that is missing from this is more of the backstory about Dan Johnson, and why this game cemented his legacy in Tampa Bay Rays lore. Sure, to most Rays fans this is the moment that comes to mind when we mention Johnson, but there is a reason Dewayne Staats says he “does it again.” In the magical 2008 season where the Rays pulled off one of the most improbable but memorable Cinderella stories in MLB history, without a doubt the team’s biggest rival was the Red Sox. As evident by the back and forth all season and in the ALCS. But on September 9th, the Red Sox were just a half game behind the Rays with a chance to pass them in the standings. Going into the top of the 9th, the game seemed locked up as the Red Sox led 4-3 and had their All-Star closer Papelbon take the mound. Johnson, who had just been called up from AAA and showed up late to the ballpark, was called to face Papelbon in just his second major league at bat of the season with little expectations outside of just getting on base. But he did have power, and he showed it when he sent a 3-2 fastball out over the right field bullpens at Fenway Park. Tie game; and the Rays would go on to win that game 5-4. That moment was the “Dan Johnson game” prior to game 162. Dan had seemingly a flair for the dramatic when he played the Red Sox, also hitting a walkoff homerun in the 10th inning in a game on August 28th 2010 which helped the Rays keep pace with their co-division leading rival Yankees. While some fans thought at the beginning of the 2011 season Dan could take over 1st base or DH duties with the departure of All-Star Carlos Pena. But as things unfolded, he was unable to produce as an everyday player for the Rays and local products Casey Kotchman and Johnny Damon took over and played nearly everyday. But Johnson once again showed the Rays why he was worth stashing, and indirectly had one more opportunity to haunt Red Sox fans. Color commentator Brian Anderson pointed out that Dan was there to do one thing, and one thing only, “hit the ball out of the ballpark.”
Just as a side note, I love this video, and I love coming back to it as it is one of if not the most legendary moments in Tampa Bay Rays history (as well as MLB history). I look forward to a rewind of the “Brett Phillips game” if that ever happens. But even if it doesn't, I'm very thankful Secret Base took on game 162 and gave it a rewind. Thank you!

as a paranoid red sox fan that lived through that entire brutal month; this deserves at least a 10 part series to capture even half of what needed to happen for this moment to occur
As an Orioles fan this moment was amazing to me and it might’ve been pure schadenfreude but damn it was satisfying. Plus part of me still firmly believes that the Orioles rode the momentum from that one walk off win into winning the al wild card next season.

I believe that win did something important for the clubhouse. It changed the culture. They saw that an impact could be made. And they wanted more. Cue playoff window opening.
I just got goosebumps reliving this. I lived in the Tampa area when this happen. That stadium may have been half empty, but the whole area (Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg) was rocking. I think many Evan babies were made that night

That day was so insane. MLB Network did an amazing doc about it and how crazy the timing of everything happened in mere minutes apart
Finally, doing game 162 of the 2011 season. It was an absolutely crazy night!
This was the most rewinder-y rewinder I ever did see. I remember that night so vividly.
I will never forget watching my Rays go from 7 runs down in the 7th inning to knock off the Yankees. It was unbelievable. And thanks so much for the great shoutout for Longo. He is still missed in St. Pete.

I've lived in Tampa my whole life and followed our teams casually, but 2011 was my first year as a full-fledged watch-every-game baseball and Rays fan. I will never ever forget this season and especially this night, part of me thought baseball would always feel this good haha. There's been plenty of pain and suffering since then but nine years later this team finally gave me TWO historic Rays moments yet again with our ALDS win and that crazy Game 4 walk-off just a few nights ago. This video will give me the energy to get through the next hopefully two(!) WS games ✨ we need some of this Game 162 magic

I as a Cardinals fan I remember that 2011 season so well mainly due as that was the last time me and my father watched the Cards play. I always get super worked up whenever someone mentions it and even if this video wasn't about them at all thank you for bringing me back to sitting in that room watching and listening to my Dad give play by play calls to my great Uncle over the phone!

Still gives brings tears an chills to my body watching this over again. Truly amazing, I remember walking into class telling my teachers ( Red Sox’s fan ) only 4.5 back, now only 3.5 back, until that final day. They now call that the “162 landing” instead of Crawford’s corner.

Me and my two friends were over my house watching the games that day. We were Giants and A's fans with no dogs in the fight... then, watching A's legend Dan Johnson hit that homer and the Orioles comeback was one of my fondest memories as a baseball fan.
The Rays have just lost Game 6. I took some quiet time to settle, and thought I'd check my YT subs before going to bed, very much discouraged. I love that I found this.

I remember this day oh so well. Watched all four games and each one was awesome for a different reason. Easily the most exciting day for Baseball games in my life. I remember Greg Amsinger dubbing it "Wildcard Wednesday".
I'm admittedly not much of a baseball fan, so this video is the first time I've heard of any of this. Watching the actual moment and seeing the camera pan and zoom over to "Crawford's Corner" was a "Holy hell" moment in my mind. Then again, with the way Seth drew our attention to that left field fence earlier, maybe I should've seen it coming.
Stories like this are the heart and soul of sports. Any sport, baseball or otherwise.

Everything was perfect, especially the calls Brian anderson and dwayne stats made before the 3 run homer by longoria: "maybe, just maybe..." and "these are the kind of situations Evan was made for" and right after that statement Evan belted that homer.

Great video. I love the rays and I remember going to bed early because I had football practice that night and was starting to get a cold but also because I thought it would be good luck. Before I passed out after a shot of NyQuil my dad told me Longoria just hit a 3 run shot. I said great but wasn’t about to leave my bed. The next morning my mom banged on the bathroom door with the news paper telling me about Longoria’s home run. I have never regretted missing this because I still want to believe me going to bed early helped them win.

The month long build up, the way almost all of these 162’s ended, and the Cardinals miraculous Game 6 WS. This entire sequence is one in a million type stuff. Great job on the rewind.
2011, what a wild ride. I remember Francona left Boston shortly after this meltdown, penned an article saying the Sox's championship window was now firmly shut, and then with this crazy recapped night, along with others, like the Colorado/Arizona game in 2007, prompted Bud Selig to give us the Wild Card Game we know now. Baseball is a beautiful and magnificent beast.

Just to note this, as an Orioles fan, that walk off by Andino did mean something. That moment is considered to be the culture changing moment of the Buckle Up Birds era teams, and was a catalyst for the best baseball Baltimore had seen in roughly 15 years. It might not seem like much to outsiders, but to those in Baltimore, it meant a lot.
Totally remember this whole night! Absolute insanity! Love ⚾️
