- It's estimated 1% of the global population is asexual, but Sky News data shows they are deeply misunderstood by wider society.
Do asexual people have a sex drive? Do they fall in love and marry? What is asexuality? Over 75% of people don't know.
Our reporter Charlie Bell speaks to four people who are redefining our misconceptions of this niche sexual orientation.

I'll be honest, the title is a bit annoying. "Life without sex". It's without sexual attraction, it doesn't mean it's necessarily without sex. Seems a bit like the person who came up with it doesn't know the definition of asexual.
Both tend to go hand to hand.
But the title could also fit for abstinents and unvoluntary celibates, so yeah
Yep, that was the first thing I thought as well as I am asexual but I do have sex and have orgasms (I also have a weak libido but it is still there and I am in a relationship with a highly sexual person, which is fine for both of us and works out fine)
@The Bloodbender exactly
I thought exactly
Yeah the title is annoying, but from the perspective of the producers, who want a title that will grab attention, it seems to be a good title. But yeah, it still is an annoying title that doesn’t really represent the entire ace community.
Asexuality is definitely misunderstood greatly by society; there needs to be more representation of it in the media.
I totally agree. The idea of a relationship has been portrait as only sexual like If partners are not having sex then they need counselling or we assume there's something wrong.
So true, more and consistent. Can't wait for the Emmerdale Asexual character Liv storyline to really ramp up!
Before i didn't care about visibility but know i'm for it, just to piss others off.

So grateful that they showed a black woman in this. Most people hypersexualize black women’s bodies, and so those of us that identify as such are constantly told that we’re broken or our cultural identity gets called into question.
❤
@Teddy James I only first met an ace white guy last year and even then he was a Russian Jew.

Have I seen that there are black asexual women but there are also black asexual men?
Sorry, maybe I know that this question is stupid, but it is only my curiosity 😅
Drux yes there are
4:47 "Unlike Yasmin, they've chosen to pursue romance". How is it choice if she doesn't feel romantic attraction? What's this obsession with framing sexuality (and romance) as choices?
The fact that he said that right after talking to her and her explaining was really frustrating, because it shows how the guy didn't even integrated the information. And after those interviews, I'm pretty sure he has forgot everything already.
For me, I don’t feel romantic attraction but I still plan on pursuing a romantic relationship. So it’s a choice to pursue romance or not pursue it, not a choice on the lack of attraction part.
This was actually surprisingly tasteful (not something I can say for a lot of coverage on this topic). I'm both aromantic and asexual and it's nice to see this getting talked about more. I spent my entire life feeling like there was something wrong with me until I reached my mid twenties and stumbled across the term. I don't talk about it with people offline, but it's nice to have online spaces to share experiences.
Likewise, feels good to know there are other felow aromantic asexual, unfortunately there's not even one good representation without the common bs stereotype of being: socially awkward, in the antisocial spectrum, non binary, asperger, etc... this shows how "normal" we look and are.
Oh and other stereotypes : being very spiritual/religious, suffered some sort of trauma, introvert, and the list goes on. I mean, fine if one fits into any of these categories but being asexual or aromantic *doesn't* mean one also has these traits.
I’m arospec Ace btw !!! 💜💚☺️✊🏼🙏🏼✨ and I loved this video !!!
@@sttephanygamarra1124 thank u so much for this thoughtful clarification and insightful explanation!! I'm glad I came across this as my friend just shared that he is asexual, so I wanted to understand & be informed while remaining supportive and not coming across as ignorant.
I figured out when I was 12 and started to finally accept it at 13, so yeah, I guess I was pretty young. I only came out at 15 after I was _positive_ I was ace and aro. The only reason I was so okay and open to it is because my sister had recently come out as pansexual, and I had asked why I had never liked anyone. I'm incredibly lucky and grateful that I had such an accepting family, and I hope more people are able to discover who they are earlier on in life and have such a good community around them! (sorry for this useless comment, just thought I'd say something)
Same here. I always felt like I was broken until my mid-twenties until I discovered that other people are aro and/or ace.
Damn why are so many people upset about this? This video has such great representation and an in-depth explaination about Asexuality! It's awesome!
It's great that both aromantic asexuals and romantic asexuals are covered xx
The fact is that there is nothing special or wrong with people being asexual/aromantic. There is no need to make such a big deal out of absolutely nothing.
@@charliefrazier5746 if there was nothing different about them it would draw attention. So yeah they are different, but that doesn't mean that's bad.
@@charliefrazier5746 It's only because all the other groups have huge voices and are making such big deals over their kinds of nothing. Right here x)
I do find how he keeps quizzing her about being a model while bring asexual quite annoying though. I love getting dressed up and feeling beautiful. I'm still asexual!
I may be wrong but I think he's confused by the fact that she umm oozes sexual energy, so to speak. It's not the fact that she's a model per se what puzzles him.
It's almost like seeing an atheist wearing a cross-necklace, it's weird.
I am also asexual but I really like to dress up really sexy. And I enjoy watching sexy people, they just don't arouse me but I find it very beautiful. I also like to arouse my boyfriend with dressing sexy.
northerlyartemis yeah am also an asexual and I'm shy but I sometimes find handsome guys cute but not sexually attracted to any guy. So am single till now.
often interviewers pretends not to know or understand something and asks questions as such to appeal and relate to the average viewer. they're asking the kind of questions any random person stumbling across this might.
I think he asked that because that is the question many people out there have who aren't asexual like us.

@@harlequindeer2142 In this case, Asexuality needs exposure because many Asexuals feel broken due to not knowing their orientation exists, or face erasure from other people who don't know about the orientation.
There are allosexual virgins and asexual people who aren´t virgins any more. Asexuals who had intercourse don´t "lie", as homosexuals who had heterosexual sex don´t "lie". Many people tried to appear "normal" and thus behaved in a heterosexual way. Homosexual and bisexual people, because they feared exposure and both legal and social consequences, asexuals because they didn´t know that their feelings were legitimate and that they didn´t have to try if they simply didn´t want to - or because they feared social consequences when falsely thought of as being homosexual. Many acted as if in order to "pass" as heterosexual. Many might still do so.
@Teddy James I have had sex with an ace person so that's not the case.
Teddy James people also get raped plus asexuals get a special thing called corrective rape
This could not be a worse representation of asexuality, as Yasmin Benoit has pointed out. Even the title “Life without Sex” - makes us sound celibate rather than being an actual sexual orientation
I'm here from Yasmin's videoabout how bad a documentary she was in was. It didn't seem that have bad intentions but it did misrepresent asexuality..
4:45 Romantic attraction is not a choice wtf... also "despite their asexuality" as if they're less worthy of love because of not having sexual attraction?
I wish that I had the word "asexual" to identify with when I was 18 (or 28 for that matter). I didn't even learn asexuality existed until my mid thirties.
I wish I knew that it could exist separate from romantic attraction before I got into my last relationship

@@paulgilson2347 for others it is. I have come out to my parents and got told that my sexuality doesn't exist and that I'm not capable of making that decision. My friends have been almost raped because people labelled them as "hard to get," and wouldn't accept that they were ace.
Don't even get me started on the LGBTQIA+ community denying that we're even in it. And most people don't even know what asexuality is or have large misconceptions about it. So yes, this does need to be publicised more. Due to the fact that there is little to no ace representation to show people who have been invalidated and erased that they are valid and not alone, this is necessary.

Yeah he was being weirdly condescending... Like of course a model can be introverted
@Flora Fauna Tell me it
I think he was only trying to understand asexuality/aromanticism
Yeah
@@garden2571 There are lots of common misconceptions and misunderstandings about introverts in the world. At least his question got her reply out into the public, that for her it's not about how many people see her but about how much time she can spend not being around people. This was actually a really great video, really covers a lot of the topic well, without pushing any stereotypes really. As an asexual, seeing this sort of posititive representation in the media is so awesome!

how is it hard to understand that someone can wear revealing clothing and not have any sexual desire? I can understand that a majority would assume that a person dressing this way is sexual, but that does not equate to it. Anyways, I do appreciate the representation this video brings for aces, and I appreciate the aces speaking in this video, but I did not appreciate some of the interviewer's comments.
Not sure, just maybe he might have played devil's advocate in order to get her to address some common misconceptions.
This is very liberating. Never even knew there is a term for this. I do get attracted to people and have romantic feelings for people but nothing sexual. Wew! Thing is, I'm also an introvert. Makes me feel like an 'outsider' at times.
Im thinking that your speech represents the artist Jenny Yu on Instagram. Her art looks ace but not entirely aro.
Have a nice day.
The asexuality spectrum is usually ignored, not known to exist or belittled, it's about time people were more educated on the matter
Even the thumbnail shows a misconception of asexuality. It's not about not having sex, it's about not experiencing sexual attraction towards other people! Everything else is totally individual.
'they've chosen to pursue romance, despite their asexuality"
Yeaah that sentence was badly worded.
It's so nice to see ace representation. I date an ace person (I'm allo) and I'm always trying my best to be a good ally to their community. Videos like this make me so happy to see ❤️

What I don't get is WHY is it anyone else's business what someone else's sexual preference is? If I choose to never have sex again in my life, which is what I'm on track to do, I don't feel that I have to explain it or apologize to anyone about it.
Because it is NOT about choosing not to have sex. Because that's exactly what people don't understand. Because a lot of people spend their whole lives with the belief that they need to be sexually attracted to good-looking people, that they need to have sex, especially in a marriage and that there is something wrong with them if that's not the case. Because people need to understand that asexuality exists and that it's normal.
Honestly not a bad video

Interesting video. It was interesting noting the comments about how asexuality doesn't necessarily mean a life without sex (celibacy). I'm sort of the shadow of asexuality, in that I do experience sexual attraction but am celibate.
The problem with sexuality is that there are so many sociopolitical entanglements imo.
There are sociopolitical entanglements with literally everything. People just love politicising and policing.

Interesting. Very compelling. I find it informative and also indegenous. I mean, we all at some point will get used to owning ourselves through what we choose to do with our bodies. I'm awaiting to hear from people who do not identify as neither of any sexualities that we have so far.

So it sounds like either these people brain is wired a certain way to have them to be asexual. Or just haven't experienced the Big O yet and especially in a very good way. Furthermore, I seem to be in a similar category of being like asexual but mainly due to bad relationships and Society is too messed up to want to be close to someone again. Much as I still would like to, if I ever do it would only be more like a one-night-stand kind of thing instead of trying to be romantically involved anymore
In a way perhaps, but it's more a case of they, on a fundamental level, are this orientation.
Just like a person might be homosexual or heterosexual, their brains aren't "wired differently". They're just attracted to different people.
Basically, it`s virgins or someone who had bad first experiences, that`s most of them, rest have other reasons. It`s good that more people understand it, but it`s nothing to be proud of too, it`s just a preference.
