Glove wearing old lady here, and I've used gloves nearly every dishwashing session of our 50+ years of marriage because dishwashing liquid eats up my hands.
A couple of more tips for you: first, when cooking there are free bits of time when you can wash cooking utensils as you go. Yes, fill your sink with hot sudsy water but while you wait on the pasta water to boil, wash up the cutting board, knives, measuring cups, etc. that you've already used. It makes a huge difference. Secondly, I am working on Bible memorization so the scripture I'm working on is propped above the sink. I can glance at it and study while doing dishes. (When I was a girl Mother and I used to sing hymns while doing dishes together. That's when I learned to sing harmony.)
In short, this can be a very productive, meditative time that is actually profitable for you in more ways than just ending up with a clean kitchen, which, by the way, is a thing of joy.

I'm with you on the gloves, I have no idea what's in the dish soap that hates my skin so much and changing brands makes little difference at all. I also agree with you on the 'clean as you go' method to keep on top of the dishes, it's worked for me for the past four decades. 😊

Don't hate me, but I love doing the dishes and the laundry 😅😂 My secret to dishes is:
    1. Rince the heavy ones before leaving them in the sink (cereal, oats, blander...)
    2. When ready, move the dishes to the counter (removing any lost food) and placing them in order: Flat dishes with flat ones from largest to smallest, same for glasses, bowls and pans. You know I'm OCD 😂
    3. Leave all cutlery in the sink and wash that first. Then give the sink a rinse and remove any food at the bottom.
    4. Place in the sink the tower of flat ones and wash, the same motion helps not to overthink and to just enjoy a conversation, movie or podcasts while doing it. Also, it saves space placing all flat ones together first to dry. I do all the washing and then all the rinsing, so the largest are washed last and rinsed first.
    5. Continue with your preference order. I do pans, then bowls, then glasses, and plastic containers last so they can be at the top of the mountain without fearing breaking. 🎉
    Hope helps.

I am so glad to hear someone else say you should feel gratitude for dirty dishes. My great grandmother raised 11 children. She always said she was grateful for dirty dishes because it meant no one went to bed hungry. It is an attitude that passed down thru my mother to me. I am 64 yrs old and have never owned a dishwasher other than the two God gave me. They still work fine.

When I began following Christ a few years ago, I started telling myself while doing the dishes (by hand since we don't have a washer) that I was washing them because I love my family, don't want them to get sick, etc. It helps to be grateful in everything.

I have the same situation (by hand, no dishwasher) and follow the same practice. I offer the chore and my family Up to God, using it as a time to pray and Yes, even be grateful as it translates to that we were provided food as many do not have that luxury. Never thought of it as keeping them well but is true statement that the dishes need be washed effectively for next use. Always good to hear another point of view, I appreciate your comment and will say a prayer for your family and You as the one charged with this mundane and never ending task.

I'm sorry. Can't help myself. I am sooo tired of religion coming into everything! So, when I began following Satan a few years ago, I started telling myself while doing the dishes (by hand since we don't have a dishwasher), that I was washing them because I love my family, don't want them to get sick, etc. It helps to be grateful in everything. Sorry for the snark, but it was just too easy. And yes, I am judging. I would say, get a life and start thinking for yourself, BUT.

    • @hellokitty3381
      @hellokitty3381 Před 4 měsíci +25

It's not religion...that is being mentioned in the comments, it is actually having a relationship with Jesus Christ that changes your whole understanding on everything. I used to live a life with no real knowledge of who Jesus is and stayed away from any of those Jesus people.
Then...I finally decided to think for myself instead of being a follower of this crazy world, and open my heart to understand that I needed help from Jesus to straighten out my life.
Everyone has to come to that understanding in their own time. I am so glad that I finally did. ❤

I was over 40 when I discovered 2 things that changed the game. 1. Dawn dish soap. Spray it on while you’re working through the less gross stuff. 2. A target gift card. No, don’t go to target. Get an old target gift card to use to scrape off any stubborn food. It can’t be a credit card. Something about that type of card it makes the best scraper because it’s pliable and won’t scratch up your dishes. I got this tip from one Dana K White’s books.

I'm the biggest advocate for rinsing every dish as soon as you're finished with it. I trained my kids to do this. Even my intellectually disabled son does it. Then it's his job to load the dishwasher, and I just have to wash the non dishwasher stuff. It turns a 30 minute job into a 2 minute job.
Yes, I rinse the dishes that go into the dishwasher. We tried not rinsing once, and I had the huge, disgusting job of cleaning out the dishwasher filter, and the dishes weren't clean, so I had to handwash the entire lot, and the food was cooked on by the heat of the water in the dishwasher! Never again 🤮 rinsing first means you use a fraction of the dishwasher products, you can use a more economical cycle, they still get sanitized, and it's only an extra 2 seconds to rinse your plate and cutlery.

Amazing tips!!! And, YES!!! Dishes are a sign of how ridiculously blessed we are. When I get grumpy about it I remind myself that there are moms on this earth (people in general) who would gladly trade doing dishes for actually being able to feed their families. Like, there are people who would fall to the floor and kiss the feet of someone who said "you can eat, but you have to do dishes". They'd say SIGN ME UP. No hesitation. Virtually every housework job can be traced back to a blessing if you really look.

I do as many as I can during one episode of The Archers (about 12mins). If I do this daily, it stops them getting as out as control as they used to get. I do that. I have a few chronic health problems, and my kitchen can get - and stay - pretty bad. Most of the time, I go in a cleanest-to-dirtiest order, but during the times when I never get it all done and the kitchen just stays piled up, it's a really big win to just clear the maximum amount of counter space by starting with the biggest. Also, during those times, the biggest things have usually sat around dirty the longest.

Yes, the hotter the water, the quicker it cleans and the easier it is to dry. And cleaning the less dirty dishes first will save you the hassle and waste of draining the water to put clean water again halfway through. More effective dish soap may be more expensive but you need a lot less than the cheaper brands for better results so it is really not that much expensive on the long run. Especially if you wait to buy a couple at a time when they go on sale. 🙂

Another way to make dishes more enjoyable - at least for yourself😊 - is to have your kids involved in completing part, if not all, of the task. From the time I could stand on a chair to reach the dish drainer, I was drying the dishes while my mother washed. Then my little sister reached the stage where she could dry and I took over the washing. Yes, it probably took more time and effort on my mom’s part at the beginning but eventually, it took one of those tasks off her shoulders. I’m a firm believer in children taking part in the maintenance of the family home!

In the same vein as being glad you have dishes that hold the food we are blessed with, you can look at paying bills the same way. When I put the stamp on or pay a bill online, even when they are higher than I would like, I am grateful for the service provided such as water, electricity, garbage, etc. I pay the bill immediately and say thank you to the service provider. Glove wearer here! Yes it helps immensely! Especially helps keep your hands from drying out! Another tip is to put all the silverware in the bottom of the sink first and leave them there until the end - they you can just rinse them because everything will have soaked off! I also put a stack of bowls or plates in the water all at once then clean the glasses while they soak a bit. Also saves water to have one sink with the hot soapy water and the second sink with plain hot water for rinsing. Handwashing uses WAY less water than a dishwasher and I think the dishes get cleaner. Another God send in my small kitchen is an over the sink drying rack - the kind that sits over both sinks high enough to work underneath - saves precious counter space!

We started a system where the dishwasher is emptied every morning. Load the dishwasher throughout the day. Run it at night. Repeat in the morning.
And no, we don't rinse anything either. Our dishwasher actually says to just scrape the dishes and load. Closed in the dishwasher all day, the food doesn't dry on. Weird to me, but it works and saves time and water.

100% YES to your first tip about filling one side or even a basin (if you don't have a 2 bay sink) with warm soapy water. Then in the other side I rinse dishes off then put them to soak in the soapy water. I tell my husband I let the hot soapy water do the work so I don't have to scrub every dish. PLUS ask others (if you have the counter space) put dishes next to the sink NOT in it. I wouldn't want to wash dishes if the sink was overflowing with dried on dirty dishes and pans.

This last winter I started wearing gloves to do dishes. Every winter my hands would get so dry, and the more moisturizer I used, the worse it got. I realized it was the hot soapy water. It’s a pain to put the gloves on, but my hands did not get dry this winter. I’m now sold on the practice 👍

Guess what? If you have a dishwasher and have a backup of un-rinsed dishes, put them straight in the dishwasher (just remove big chunks) and run the rinse only cycle. Then, run a tough cycle with a good quality detergent tablet. You’ll be amazed that the dishwasher actually does the job for almost every messy, forgotten dish. Next, follow the advice in this video! But if you fall behind, give the dishwasher a chance with the rinse cycle, then tough cycle.

I actually like doing laundry and washing dishes by hand!!!.. When I realized i should fill the sink with dish soap and water as i was cooking or baking and do the dishes as i was cooking , it made it so much easier, and when food was heating, baking i would wash the dishes that had been sitting in the soapy water, after dinner there was only the few dishes to wash and a dirty pan or two, It was also quick to wipe all the surfaces clean quickly thank you for the great advice.

I have a dishwasher but prefer to handwash my dishes. I grew up with a gramma that was a baker. Doing her dishes ket me be able to "lick the bowl" and eat the rest of the frosting. As I got older I learned to clean as I cook. When I do leave doshes in the sink, I soak them with a drop of detergent and water. Then when I was them, I use a Scrub Daddy (whose always smiling) and use Mrs Meyer so it smells good.
As far as laundry, I fold it as I take it out of the dryer and put it away right away. I stream CZcams to listen to while I work.

Here are some more tips learned over my lifetime:
    1) For starches & dairy: rinse or pre soak with cold water first, makes clean up so much easier!😊
    2) Declutter excess dishes & wash as you go; reuse throughput the day. Keeps the pile from getting too big!😊
    3) Use disposables when company comes over or life gets overwhelming.
    4) Put on upbeat music & wash (& dance) to the beat. Makes the time fly!😊
    5) If doing dishes by hand, let them air dry. It’s more sanitary & breaks the job up into smaller chunks of time. After dinner, put on music, take up leftovers & set pots to soak with appropriate temperature of water. Then, clean stove & countertops . Lay out towel & drying rack on counters. Then, wash pots & set back on stove top to dry. Wash rest of dishes. Let dry overnight on countertops. They can be put away in the morning while waiting for the coffee to brew or between other morning tasks. This is an especially helpful game plan when you’re exhausted/overwhelmed.
    Hope these help!

Only a single sink. I have a washing up bowl in the sink. Boil the electric kettle for hot water, add 1 tsp of organic washing up liquid. Wash the dishes in this order, glasses, cups, cutlery, plates, any tuppers, pots and pans. As soon as I have finished cooking I put some water in the pans so the food residue doesn't stick. Wash up after every meal, don't let it pile up. We live in a drought area where the water is expensive per litre, so rinsing under running water is not possible, but I pour a cup full of water over the dishes in the draining rack.

I started this video when I started doing the dishes and finished just before the video did! I've already picked up a few of these methods over time and the biggest help has been knowing just how long it actually takes to do the job. After some practice I can now look at a full sink and confidently tell myself I'll be done in 10 minutes. I just started rinsing the dishes as I go and I'm also a fan of washing first and rinsing after (as an added bonus I can hear whatever background video I put on better with the water being off longer).
I already don't mind doing the dishes (or laundry 🤷🏼‍♀️) but adding those little extra habits has made such a difference! I think it's a fun little challenge trying to arrange everything nicely in the drying rack too, which I start doing by strategically picking out which things to wash first.

I do one thing along with yours.
    1. First rinse the dirty dishes and put them beside the sink ( as I have single tub)
    2. Then put a big bowl in the sink
    3. Scrubbing them in that big bowl.
    4. Now rinse the dishes one by one . Putting in the bowl, there is water accumulation so rinsing becomes faster while cleaning one by one as there water traps and soapy dishes being in it.
*** don't know whether I make it clear to you or not 😅
And most importantly I also set time.
    Really Really Really
    It helps..
    Thank you so much .

A faster way to wash with a double sink is to stack ur dishes on the counter, clean one side of the sink and half fill with just water, the other side with soapy water. After washing a dish put it in the plain water and keep going until ur plain water side is full of dishes, theyre already rinsed now so put them all in the drying rack and go back to washing the rest of the dishes

Our house does use paper plates and with the amount of other dishes we accumulate, it's worth it! I do use gloves and hot water while cleaning them & I feel like it does help save on dish scrubbing time (as well as my nails/cuticles don't end up paying a small toll at the end). Rinse all dishes after use, soak the ones that have baked on remnants. Wash glasses and plastics first to avoid grease clinging to them, then move along from least to most dirty. Rinsing in super hot water helps them dry, eliminating the need to get out your dish towel and dry everything by hand. Wipe down counters, stove, microwave, and spot wipe cupboards, then scrub your sink clean, tossing the scrubby/dish cloth into the laundry basket (I keep a little basket under my sink). Use a fresh dish cloth or scrubby everyday to avoid spreading bacteria. If that's not an option, make sure to ring out your dish cloth and air dry it, to avoid that 'wet dog' smell.
Watching/listening to something definitely helps get through this chore!

As someone who can't have a dishwasher in my kitchen (rental), I highly appreciate this video! 😅 Dishes are by far the worst chore, because it is the most time consuming over time, if you look at it. I have generally gotten a lot better about it, but in busy periods, I will occasionally build up a mountain. When that happens, I have a large dish tray and a holder for the plates. I make it a point to rinse all the food of the dishes first. (round 1). Then later, I will do as many dishes as will fit on the tray. When it is full, I can stop until it dries. (round 2) Once dry, I will put it away and take another break. Then I repeat round 2 until all dishes are dry.
Sure, it would be better if I could always stick to the routine I have in good periods. But life happens, and when it does, being ashamed only makes it harder to deal with it.

Sink full of soapy water during cooking is a good tip. At least the measuring cups and cutting boards can be cleaned even while dinner is still cooking. Sometimes you empty a pot or pan while serving up the food and it can go right into the soapy water. Otherwise, I start with glasses, cups, reusable straws etc. and wash them before the water gets greasy. I am thankful for the family that I get to care for and that helps. Dana K. White says to do the dishes as a daily priority...and it helps me to think of them as a non-negotiable and a task that can be finished.

Using a BRUSH with a long handle instead of a sponge was a game changer for me! I used to not want to even touch the dishes, and now I try to wash it right away after a meal. All of it because a brush is easier to use, since you don’t fulling touch the plate. Also, the dish soap doesn’t get on your hands that much (it can be irritating to the skin). And the bush is easier to clean as well, in comparison to a sponge, that gets gross pretty quickly, even if you wash it, too!

Thanks for another great video, you seem like such a great person! As for the tips that you found on the Internet, the one with cleaning glasses and cups or the least dirty things first actually makes sense. However you can make it even better if you clear all the dishes from any leftover food first and put the heavily soiled ones, like pans and pots on the bottom and then wash cups and glasses and plates over them. Like this they are under water constantly, have time to soak and can be washed in no time when you get to them. If you have too many things you will just do it in batches.

I hand wash about half of my dish items due to not being dishwasher safe or we use it often, etc. However, my mom taught us that if you 'clean as you go' it makes the after-dinner dishes go way faster. So during the cooking time, wash or rinse and put into the dishwasher during that time and it saves time and effort after dinner :) my sister and I do it during those holiday meals and it always makes for the fastest clean up!!

You are a smart, homemaker, mother and wife,, you have adapted your home life to adapt to your families needs and your needs, and if it means using paper plates, you do what’s best for your family and for you because you need that time if you have young children, you need that time for yourself and for your husband. My husband and I have been retired for 10 years, our children are all grown and have families of their own and we don’t get together very often for family meals because our adult children are busy with their own families and friends and church activities, and other activities so when we do get together, it is a treat and I will make it very pleasant for the family to be in my home but otherwise in the summertime when we get together as a family, we use paper plates and use picnic supplies. Whatever works for a family whether it is setting an elegant table or just a casual table with place settingsis fine. Keep up the good work young lady and I know your children are happy and healthy and you seem to be a content, wife and mother.
