What PSI do you run this tire at and does it mess with the TPMS on the bike?
Hi, just saw your video. Just bought a 2012 K1600 GT which needs both tires, rear shock and few other things. So my concern would be about the stiffness of the sidewalls. On a MC tire, the side walls are very stiff which a car tire is not that stiff. So how will that effect the riding long term. Short term is not an issue. What do you think?? And the 185 sized car tire does not seem to be available except from overseas?? And where do you get that spacer ?? Thanks.
Jeff - can you comment a little on the Venom stand please? I've been all over the internet to find one for my K1600GTL - concerned about the capacity? Seems to handle your bike well despite the 500 lb weight limit disclosed on their site?
Jay Bear, so did you need both spacers? Where did it rub and did you notice any straight line handling changes?....wider foot print going straight makes me think it might be influenced by some of the highway grooves. Thanks for the video, I’m still on the fence about converting. Could you detail the tire size and the spacer...can you show how much thread the lug bolts grab. Thanks
Maxwellmark, sorry I didn't see this earlier! I ended up buying a marcparnes.com 1/4" spacer and longer lug bolts. With the 1/8" spacer I could get 6 turns of the lug bolts in, but since the hub is aluminum I wasn't sure if that was going to be enough as hard as I ride. Many people have said that a 185 and some 195s fit without the spacers. I've not felt any significant changes to the handling, and I appreciate the extra rubber when upright. Even with the spacer and lug bolts the total cost was way less than a bike tire.
Question I am thinking of going dark side on my r1200gs especially since it will never see off road but my question is it fits a 170/60/17 what would be the equivalent in a car tire.. I’m not looking for a thicker tire but something that is just as narrow…any help would be appreciated
Interesting how different bikes need different modifications to accommodate the wider tire cross section. Your BMW required shifting the wheel centreline over, what, 5mm? On our Yamaha FJRs, we need to modify the rear brake stay to gain clearance on the right side. I sure love that single sided swing arm on your bike.
Now that you have some hard charging (s)miles, have you looked way up underneath at your inner fender well for signs of rubbing? On my FJR it just rubs a touch on two outer edges of the curved cross section contour at maximum rear swing arm travel. In my 160k miles darksiding, it hasn’t been an issue. My saddle bags are packed at all times ( go bag, and travel items) but I ride solo. Just recently I’ve upped the rear spring rate a bit giving me a bit more ride height.

With the new BFG Comp T/A2, there is just a touch of rubbing still as apparently there's more rubber right at the edge of the tire. But it's only at full compression in right-hand turns and full lean. On my bike, the front fender mounting tabs limit the size of the front tire. Wish I could go wider there as well!

Mate, you ride fast!! But great video, thx. I run a Yokohama Avid Touring S, 215/60/17. Makes my speedo accurate, let's me finally able to afford riding, and with my Dunlop American Elite up front, it handles perfect.
Utah was just made for this bike, or possibly the other way around... :)

I typically run at 40. For me, lower pressure makes the bike less stable in high speed corners.
Could you assist me listing what I need in order for me to do this? You mentioned a Bridgestone RE92A, but what’s the width? And which spacer do I need to buy? Thanks!

I can imagine you're getting a ton of negative feedback. I'm not going to do that. I want to know what tire you're using. Make and model please. It seems you're confident the lug bolts are long enough to go through the spacer and still hold everything together. o you know how many threads penetrate? And finally, please let me know where you found the spacer. Thanks.
I'm running a Bridgestone RE92A in a 205/50 size. With the spacer, I got 6 threads through which I felt wasn't enough for the way I ride. Ended up getting a custom spacer made from a guy on ebay (ryajame_v5arrbvsg) which includes longer lugs.

I ran them on the back of my Goldwing for thousands of miles. Only problem i had was they were a smaller diameter and gave me a 4 mph difference on the spedo. Less ground clearance. Went back to a bike tire at 130,000 miles. If i could find the right size i eoukd go back to the dark side.
I could tell the difference at below 30 mph. Over that it was fine. Don't mislead people.
What size was your stock tire? Most speedos run fast, so I always go up a size. Went from a 190 to a 205, both /50-17s and my speedo is within 1 mph of gps now.

Got hold of that company and they do not make the spacer for the big wheel. Because I was going to do the same thing get a 205 55 17 and put that on there kind of wondering we got that from

I may have missed it ... why do you have to get a car tire that is wider than the mc tire?
This is a great question. Mostly, I did it because at the time of purchase there were MANY more options in the 205/50-17 size than a 185 or 195 width. On a smaller, lighter bike I'd want to stay as close to the original size as possible to minimize the change in handling. Because of the weight and power of the BMW, more tread was not a bad thing.
No such thing as a car tire. It is a vehicle tire according to insurance companies. Nice video. I run dark on my gl1800. Looks like my K16 is going to get darkened. Thanks for the work on this and your other vids.
Thanks! Just remember you need to go with a 195/55-17 if you don't want to get the spacer and longer lug bolts. That was another $139 or something if I recall.
@@JayBearjaysbigadventure Jay, I went with the 1/4" spacer and the 205/50r17 Driveguard runflat. I love the feel and traction the tire has. The runflat has thick sidewalls and provides up to 1400 pounds of weight carrying ability. Thanks for the excellent vids. Subscribed and rang the bell.
"almost $1,200 dollars on rear rubber" wow , I'm at $400/6k or $3,200 "on rear rubber" for 50,000 miles I just had a front tire installed it was $335. FYI - you can buy a 185 car tire and 195 is a popular car tire, both would fit your bike better
When I started down this road, I just wanted a cheap tire to try out. I use bestusedtires.com as they tend to have brand new take-offs that they sell for about half of retail. For an experiment, that made sense as I could always go back to a MC tire and get almost all my money back. At that time, they had this Bridgestone RE92A that was a new-car take off with 0 miles. I actually wanted the wider footprint as it's always the center section that wears out first.
I've been astonished at how utterly normal the bike feels, even on soft right-left changes.
My rear tire on my S1000 XR lasted 15,000 miles. You must start and stop hard.
Tried a Vulcan 2000 with a Car tire a few years ago and it was terrible. Ya'll are smarter than the engineers I guess.....I'll stick with motorcycle tires.
Engineers are incredibly restricted in what they design by the bean counters and lawyers. They engineer for average at best. As an individual I can modify my car and motorcycle to more specifically handle my needs and desires. I would bet your Vulcan would not be happy with a car tire. Many cruiser/Harleys tend to wobble from the factory - a car tire just exacerbates that tendency. It works really well on full dress, heavy and powerful motorcycles - none of which describe your Vulcan. Fun bike, but not a good candidate as you found out.
@@JayBearjaysbigadventure It was a Vulcan 2000cc's. it wasnt mine but a friends. Took so much effort to get it to lean over. To each his own but I enjoy riding on rounded tires that fall into turns just thinking about it.
@@craiggoldstein2461I promise you your issue with the Vulcan due to the geometry of the Vulcan not the shape of the tire. That bike isn’t a corner carver to begin with. I wish I had the time or the space to educate you. I was skeptical too. I was expecting to notice a massive difference in my 1800 wing. Nope, only difference is was it seems like I get a little more lean angle before I drag my pegs.

Hi, maybe a bit late (I just discovered this video today) but do you realize that you mounted a winter tire on your bike?
I don't suppose I have to explain what that means in not-winter-conditions?

It is a 'high performance all season', so it's not as soft as a Blizzak or Arctic Alpin or Sotto Zero 3. And that is to help with the cornering traction, now that I have 4 times the rubber on the road to help with straight line tire wear. A lot of Harley guys use winter tires because their bikes don't have enough power to hurt the softer compound. I do however! :)
Put a lot of miles on motorcycle is yet not going darksided but I feel we are being ripped off by MC tar companies mega high prices no mileage I feel car tire on motorcycle is a lot like sex if you have not tried it don't knock it

Don't want to jinx you, but you really need to slow down mate. I've been in the hospital twice, 6 broken bones once, broken back second time. Almost totaled both bikes. I'm lucky to walk, let alone still ride. So I ride a lot more conservativly now. I'd hate to see you biff and get hurt mate.

I'm glad you'll save a couple of bucks on tires. You know the beads on a car tire and a motorcycle tire are very different...right? I'm surprised that a motorcycle shop would do the mounting. Most responsible shops won't due to liability exposure. Lets hope that the tire doesn't separate itself from the rim in an inopportune time...like on a curve or something. Your insurance company will most likely walk away from the claim. Hope you're savings is worth the risk. Good luck. Your other video was good though.
Amazingly, the bead on the car tire matches the contour of the rim nicely. The front tire, a properly sized MC tire, looks like it isn't even going to hold air. I should update the video. :)

Dark Side is actually one of the less entertaining ones, and I too have yet to find a single instance of where someone even suggested it was their car tire that influenced the crash.
