An automotive legend, The Digger, is being brought back to life at Gas Monkey Garage! Mike Minette originally built the Digger back in the 70's and its been an icon ever since. Seen cruising all across Texas and Oklahoma, this bada*** build is 100% street legal
Before this legend gets back on the road, we sat down with the original builder, Mike Minette, to get the full story of how The Digger came to be.
Back in its day, the Digger was a Dallas icon! Built to be street legal and turn heads, Richard Rawlings finally got his hands on this automotive legend. Now that's it's back at Gas Monkey Garage, it's time to bring this legend back to life!

What do you think of The Digger?
Hi 🐒, i was wondering where you Dug that up.
JUNK
That thing is crazy! I would consider at least replacing the carburetor with a 4 barrel TBI just for drivability and ease on maintenance though.
Just like Mike. Cool AF.
It’s a piece of rad history!!
The history of that area should be documented. There’ll never be another time like it.
Agreed, probably got more history than Detroit!
My dad introduced my 2 Mike back in the early 90's, he's a living legend and a super nice+ talented
Just listen to the old-timers talk that is amazing. Richard I'll buy everything grease everybody's fingers
@@MrJimibarrett tell me you've never been to Dallad without telling me. GF newb
Absolutely fantastic interview...keep the old timers high on your guest list...those stories need to be told!!!
I could listen to this guy all day long, A no BS man.
Possibly the best episode yet. Love listening to him talk about the car and the build. Would love to have him on the “show” as they pull it apart and “rebuild” it, and listen to him “advise” on how to redo it, all the while telling stories about how he built it. Absolute legend. Thanks Richard for bringing him in to discuss it. Outstanding.
It would be cool if Richard did this once a month with different builders from the area . Have them bring in there builds and talk about what they did and what inspired the build . That would be some great content.
It would be cool to hear about the car culture of this area
@@hoponspot yes for sure
Agreed, id like to hear more story's from mikes generation. That's only my preference though. purely thinking cause that generation aren't on socials or TV and paved the way. Im from Glasgow where Hot rodding and car modding is not really a things all for this content.
@@MarkJayOsborne1901 I agree and that generation couldn’t just order any part conversion kit of the internet they only had magazines to order from but mostly just made there own stuff. And to me that’s a lot better when you have a idea and make it happen with the tools and materials you have and a bit of imagination
@@canadaeast8358 In my mind, maybe your the same. Back then it seemed like pure passion, creativity and a willingness to explore and Figure out. As you said, they didn't have the same access to what we have now. The Romance of back then makes me think it was never for financial gain, popularity or now the more modern way "for likes & views" it was just folk Fucking about haha. and its those storyies I want to hear. By fucking about doing something you enjoyed becoming iconic.
Mad respect Richard, thanks for bringing us along for the ride
Making a Mold off of the Digger Body and making a Carbon Fiber Body would be epic plus you could preserve the original body for future generations to see and maybe sell body kits
It's a cool ride. You're respect for him is evident. There isn't a better person to bring it back to its glory days.
Hell yes, Thanks for Showing, the Old School Builders, so important to keep this Way of Life Alive .
Man, that guy is soo down to earth and modest!! I just love the old hot rodders!!!
Wow.. I always thought my favorite GMG episode was the old Caddy from back in the day, but this one takes 1st place! 🏆 Thanks for letting him share his story!
That thing is KILLER ! and has a great story. So cool to see that man checking out his old ride.
This was a great interview. Lots of respect to that man for sure and he deserves every bit of it.
This car and its story is so cool. So many guys like him built some really iconic cars and never got any recognition at all. Richard should bring more of these guys on the show to talk about there builds and stories of how they came to build there hotrods.💪

Seems like a pretty cool guy. Not too many left.
Omg I love this. I'm a old timer myself and there's not enough respect for hot rodders from the late 60s early 70s. I cant wait to see this running again.
It’s a common problem on many things in our world today. I always respect my elders and love hearing their stories….they will share so much if folks would just take the time to listen.
It's the stories and history that makes these cars so much fun.
22yr old. This man is a legend.
Like I said before, a bulldog is a breed with a mug that only a mother can love, till you look at the adorable face for a while, and fall in love with it! Same with this car, the more I hear about the history, and look at it, the more I fall in love with it!
Great video! Cheers from Ontario Canada!!
cheers buddy! I'm from Ontario Canada as well!!
I have to comment, I’m an old forest lane cruiser from the 70s. Had Dennis Parennio(spelling) curve a distributor on my 70 RR down the way from the Blue Max guys. As great as Forest was in the day the really super fast cars were on Westmorland in Oak Cliff! I still have no idea where those guys came from but showroom muscle cars had no chance there!
Major cool - glad you got him in to do this.
I agree it’s nice to actually see the builder instead of just hearing his name. Richard getting him in for the interview and giving him the credit he deserves shows that Richard got huge respect for this guy
The digger is awesome. Saw a hemi coupe stretched into a street legal dragster at mecum Kissimmee in 2017- they are way cool in person ! Thanks for keeping history alive for us to appreciate.
Out of all the episodes. I like this one. Love good story time with older generation. And get that man back over there to help you guys 😉
We need more automotive history! This was awesome and will go down as a favorite.
I love this workshop it has good legends through the years beautiful constructions beautiful car I love Richard Rawlings become a legend with his beautiful gasmonkygar classic cars 👍
Even in England that man is known as a Legend. If you know you know, if you don't well that's just hard luck...👍🙂👍🇬🇧🇺🇲🇬🇧🇺🇲
Badass
You should resurrect the whole Gasoline Alley idea as a monthly meet up!! imagine the first convoy of the first meet being lead by the Digger and other local legends that still might be around..
Old school, is that simple? Remember it and still love it.
It's cool and one-of-a-kind
Wonderful interview, thank you. Car legion's like Mr Minette were a great inspiration and should be knowledged.
I know I sound like a broken record.. I absolutely love this channel. Glad the digger deal finally went through. This episode was so cool. Thanks for everything.
Thank you mr.mike !!
Where is Chase? Thanks for the great show. Brings back old memories for me. Back in the day in the 70s. You’re lucky to have these people around you and I’m glad you know it cherish it.

Love this kind of Content. Learning about car culture from a time long before I was born in area of a country I've never been. Mad respect
I love hearing the"old timers" talk about they're builds and the way they did it, that's golden!!! You can't buy that kind of sit down chit chat. That's HISTORY! I'm in the boat restoration business so hearing about the fiberglass molds and the way he built it, that's super cool
The excitement around this project is good to see. 🤙🏽
Love the old school back yard fab guys. 👍🕺🏻🇺🇸
It needs more front grip for cornering, so add weight in the nose with a bit wider tyres and then you could have front brakes but with the bias towards the rear to prevent locking.
I agree it would look cooler and be way better and safer
Beer 30 is the best series I've watched in a while. All things Gas Monkey are are in the mix of things on daily in my little shop in Lancaster Ohio. We are working to build a solid foundation here before expanding into a national company.
Great stories that was cool💯 love to here the old timers and the real history of stuff
Driving that on I-35 in the 70's is crazy AF.
That was a great interview to have the man who built it right there answering questions that was totally rad.
best episode yet ... richard being an absolute gentleman... keep it up
Thank u Richard for this video. I love learning an seeing hit rods from before our time I as born in 73 an love seeing an watching videos from the 70s. Best video in a long tie from anyone can't wait to seethe build
Loving every second of this
Great stories man!
That's absolutely awesome Richard, what a blast it well be to see it back in driving conditions. By all means be careful driving it and enjoy . Absolutely one of the coolest cars you have had and the history is amazing.
BEST show ever.
Thanks to Mike and Richard...
With the original car and inventor handy, you can't go wrong. Looking forward to the final result. Good luck
Be respectful of your elders. These old guys usually have more knowledge in their little finger than you have in your whole body. I made friends with a chap who designed carbs for Messerschmitt in the 40s . Taught me so much and tuned my car to perfection. True story, lived in Gorsty knoll in the forest of dean lovley family used to build beautiful brass steam engines.

Super awesome to hear about. Great interview and clearly a super impressive thinking gentleman.
tnx for the video
Cool video. Nice to see, the original builder. Metro Detroit Loves you guys!! G
Out of all the Gas Monkey shows and youtube video's this is my favorite...
Just ordered that August 1974 Car Craft magazine from ebay!!! And I will hunt down any other known write-ups, this car has consumed me with it's mystique, I need to know it all! So glad the OG builder is still around to tell his tales; no less being interviewed by Tricky Ricky himself! Entertainment gold I tell yas!
Love his thinking. Love the new tinkering. Back on the road.
Great video Richard. So lucky that the builder is still around and can tell the story. Can't wait to see you drive it down the road 🍻👍
