I was at the game with my best friend Jim. We were able to get the tickets at face value from a co-worker. We were just 21, we were offered $500 each outside of Soldier Field. We looked at each other and I remember saying this is a once in a lifetime. Back then we did not know it may be the best time of our life. It was cold and windy and even a little light snow, but that day we did not care we were so fortunate to be there as the Bears went on to beat the Patriots in their next game to win the super bowl. I became emotional watching this...by far the best Bears team ever. I still have the ticket in a photo album in my basement. Thank you for posting...I have lost family members, friends (Jim) have moved away... RIP to all and John Madden, Pat Summerall.

As a UK teenager in the 80s I became a Bears fan mainly because of Sweetness. He was something else. We used to watch the Channel 4 programme on Sunday evenings for our weekly fix back then. At the time I had no idea of how special that defense was. Looking back now with this wonderful footage you can see that they took no prisoners and must have scared the shit out of every quarterback they faced. It was a travesty that the Dolphins prevented them from a clean sweep that year, I remember the highlights of that game when Marino had a blinder and the luck was with them. The 46 largely shut down Dickerson from the onset. With Summerall's immortal calling "back to the line of scrimmage and NOTHING else". So classic.

I'm not too young to know about the 85 Bears. I followed the NFL very intently that year as a Rams and Raiders fan, and it being my first year avidly following football. My objection here has to do with you suggesting no NFL defense was even close to the Bears. That's not true. Even if you believe they were the best (and they arguably were, and so was '86), historically they aren't on a level above everybody else.
There are several other teams in the conversation, most notably but not exclusively the '76 Steelers and the '00 Ravens. The fanboy in me wants to put the '83 Raiders after they traded for Mike Haynes, but that's an aside. I didn't see the Steelers team as I was only 4 y/o, but I did see the Ravens team.
I personally put the Ravens over CHI in retrospect. It's close. But my reasoning is that 1) they had the most dominant player in Ray Lewis 2) They allowed fewer ppg and ypg than CHI, and that's amazing considering the NFL in 2000 was more offense and scoring oriented, whereas in 1985 it was more plodding and conservative. 3) The Bears defense was bolstered by an offense that was 2nd in the league and could control the possession time with Walter, whereas the BAL offense was not amazing to say the least. This put the Ravens defense on the field much more often and put tremendous pressure on them to hold the opponent and never let them score.

Some of you may have noticed Jeff Fisher standing next to Buddy Ryan in street clothes. He looks a little different with the full beard and longer hair. Fisher was a backup safety on that team since 1981. He broke his leg returning a punt and because he was a bright guy who had always played for Buddy Ryan they decided to use him to help the coaching staff.
Of course Fisher would go on to be Buddy's secondary coach for the Eagles and later his DC. Then he would be a head coach for 21 years most of that for my Tennessee Titans.
An interesting anecdote is that the guy who tackled him and caused his broken leg was Bill Cowher the hall of fame coach for the steelers.
