Walter Peyton never looked for the sideline like Franco Harris did, he would aim straight for you. Dude could run like the wind, he had WR hands, he was a tremendous blocker and he could throw too. What a talent.
Best all around football player to ever play the game. Period.
Agreed!!!
CORRECT! My college roommate hated the fact thatFranco Harris would run out of bounds rather than attempt to make contact for extra yardage. This drove him crazy!
Walter was the greatest rb ever but why get bruised up if you don't have to that don't make Franco a bad RB he was saving his self Franco was a great Rb
The Steel curtain defense 1976 was dominate from 74 to 80 the best defense of all time
there will never be another defense like this because of the new rules for player safety, for better or worse
And also spread offenses with multiple receiver sets and quick passing attacks is what counters the super blitz heavy 4-6 defense.
@Harry Engel yes
Yet there are just as many injuries as ever.
Football now is boring as hell. I watch the real old games now on Sunday instead of the modern crap
@@PRHILL9696 good for you pal, so brave
I’m 60 years old and I’ve been watching football since I was a little kid and I can guarantee you that the ‘85 Bears had the best defense of my lifetime, no doubt about it. Physical, ferocious, intimidating, and smart. They had the ability to take games over at will.
It was the greatest. 💀🔥
So what year what were you born since I don't want to do math harry balls?
One super bowl championship not enough. But nobody owns you anything in this league.
2000 ravens
This is one reason why Dan Marino is the best QB the NFL has ever had. Don't care if he didnt win the super bowl, it takes a team. No QB was more talented and no one accomplished more with less
Seeing some of those hits in real time instead of slowmo…omg. They straight up killed people.
miss the smashmouth era
They did beat the day lights out of there opponents that year
@@sukhastings4200 watching the Bears on defense was better than watching the great offensive teams (2007 Patriots, 2000 Vikings, Manning's teams). They literally took your breath away.
yeah....and that's wny McMahon was a target. too bad he got hurt so much and the Bears didn't repeat or get more rings.
The defense was so legendary , history forgot that they had the 5th ranked offense in the league too
And it was the offense that separated this team from the Bears teams of 1984 and '86, which actually had more dominant defenses, but had very little offense except the obvious, Walter Payton. But in 1985, the offense was potent enough that only the Air Coryell Chargers scored more points than the Bears did in '85. And Air Coryell only scored 11 more points than the Bears did that season.
They weren't only potent, but in the top 10 teams that season, they probably had the most balanced offense.
That's what makes the 2015 Denver D so amazing to me. They had a completely inept offense and still won the SB. Beat Brady twice, then the high powered Panthers in the Super Bowl. Manning and Osweiler combined for the 30th ranked QB play that year.
Yep and #2 scoring offense too. I always get a kick out of the meatball fans that called them one dimensional. Then they have to give somenground with their argument and state the obvious with Payton. Then they have to be informed that Matt Suey was a fine secondary cement head FB/HB. Then they have to be informed that Willie Gault was a 1000 yard WR in the toughest defensive era ever and also be informed that Moorehead was a criminally underrated TE who came through in the passing game. Of course theres McMahon who NEVER has gotten the credit he should get who would have a field day in todays league. I love when moron couch potatoes accuse this team of being one dimensional. They were FAR from one dimensional and I DO believe the best single season team EVER.
@@brianbelden2449, and McKinnon at WR, as well. Jimmy Mac; not only more than adequate, he knew how to win.
The reason I as an Englishman fell in love with American football. The Chicago Bears.
I am so jealous of people who got to watch this gladiatorial era of the NFL as it happened. The rest of us born after 1985 just see the highlights in slow-motion and it doesn't show how fast and hard the game was played at this time. Any of the offenses that could go toe to toe with the 85 Bears, the 86 Giants, 87 Redskins etc would have a cakewalk in today's game.
You can watch full original broadcast games on CZcams though. So at least if you are curious, you can watch older games in that manner. It's not the same of course as seeing everything week to week at the time it happened, but it's something if you have a couple of hours to burn.
We miss real football like this. We never watch the nfl anymore
Maybe but at least Super Bowls in this era have been generally way more exciting than the frequent blowouts we got throughout the 80s/90s
@Dave Dane OK boomer
I was at that greenbay game when the fridge scored...it was a Monday night game
Man, if I had to go back, and see any team in my life, it would be the 85 bears. What a team!! Bear down!!
I grew up in Chicago...the city of perennial losers, The cubs, etc. Yet....when this team happened....it was like nothing else!! Every week was stunning. The game was over at 3pm and we were out of our minds the rest of the day!!! It was just EPIC! Week after week. Vindication. It was such a great time, so much so that I never really have been into football since. Nothing compares to it. It will never be that good.......the circumstances that brought all this together, everything lined up just right to make it happen.....just won't be there again, at least not in my lifetime. I live in Austin now, since 1986..... Hockey fan......Go Blackhawks!!

Looking at the play again it wasn't all his body landing on the QB.
Most of the great teams of the '70s-'90s couldn't play today's game. They'd be penalized, fined and suspensioned out of existence.
When they went to the SuperBowl and WON, I cried with GREAT tears of joy! I've been a Chicago Bears fan since I was 5yrs. old. Dick Butkus was my favorite player back then.
"Butkus didn't try to put you in the hospital, he tried to put you in the cemetery " Deacon Jones. Showed you the respect Butkus had.
But Dan real and the Dolphins kick their ass
Lucky you got to play the Patriots and not he Dolphins who beat them badly that year.
@@dasparado Yes Bears did get lucky, Miami did not get to the Super Bowl
Imagine if Dick Butkus was on this team? They probably would have shut out every single opponent
Jim McMahon holds the NFL record for consecutive winning starts. Between 1984-1987 Jim was 25-0 as a starter.
wow had no idea
Same here.
Now THAT is a fucking WINNER
ROFL! You can thank Payton and the Defense for that. Mcmahon wasn't a quarterback (at NFL level) any more than was cam newton.

Consider this when it comes to the 1985 Bears and their postseason run:
Their defense scored more points during those three games than the three opposing teams combined.
No other team in NFL history can say that.
2000 ravens can
@@CoolioXXX52
Nope. Not even the 2000 Ravens can. Check again.
In other words I could have been playing QB and they still would have won. All I would have to do is hand of the ball to Payton. Never throw a pass and let the D do the rest.
@@waynejohanson1083
...and don't turn over the ball, ha ha.
1989 SF 49ers outscored their 3 post season opponents by 19 more points than the 85 bears did.
I miss Walter Payton...as many accolades as he has received somehow I still think he is underrated. Best all-around back ever...could do it all. Plus a great human...he just got it.
No need to highlight Perry when he’s in the backfield . . . i SEE him.
Greatest team that has EVER been assembled!!!! How this team only won 1 Super Bowl blows my mind. It was truly MAGIC that one year though, MAGIC!!!!!!
They were just in ONE Superbowl! A flash in the pan then gone! Money & greed carries the most weight.
They would have been the 80s dynasty team if Buddy Ryan could have gotten along with Ditka; that's why they only had 1 super bowl
That Packer lineman who slammed McMahon to the turf WELL after he threw the ball, and Jim was injured and never the same player again.
If McMahon stays healthy, I bet they go to 2 more Super Bowls, winning at least one of those.
@@KnockOffBeingFat Yep, the idiot McCaskeys didn't want to pay Marshall after the '86 season and Charles Martin of the fudge packers ruined McMahon's career and they didn't have any other leaders like him to take over.
@@tbadj649 Wrong again. They were statistically better after Ryan left. They only had one Super Bowl because Jim McMahon could stay healthy. If he could, they'd won 3 or 4 in a row, starting in '84.
I will be 36 this year. I was at the Superbowl in 86 screaming in my mother's womb. This was awesome thank you.
Walter Payton Is A True Chicago Bears Legend!
It's a shame that he wasn't given the opportunity to score at TD in the Super Bowl - he was too effective as a decoy.
@@coach6250 He probably didn't mind if it helped them win.
Yes, indeed!
Wilbur Marshall was an absolute beast!
He may have been the best defensive player they had!
I was devastated when he went to Washington. So disappointing. The guy was incredible. Combined with Singletary and Wilson, I can’t think of a better linebacker trio
He really was a monster he was like a 230 lb bullet on the field. He was truly scary
That Wilbur Marshall hit on Detroit QB Joe Ferguson is STILL a classic...
One of the 3 greatest hits of all time:
-Butkus & his “whiplash” hit on a running back!
-the Larry Cole hit on Bradshaw in Super Bowl 10
As a Packers fan…this was cool to watch. Greatest D of all time. Unbelievable.
Your too young to have seen the ‘63 bears defense:
Kilkullen liggett jones & atkins (D line)
Morris George & fortunado
(Linebackers)
McCray Whitwell Petibone & Taylor (d backfield)
They were called 11 angry men; because they played every down on defense!
I really miss the old NFL from the seventies and eighties
Imagine having the bears defense in fantasy that year

People would think u sucked Peter if u told them I played something called fantasy football in 1985😂
You almost wouldn't need any offense, lol.

One of my favorite teams to watch play. Nothing like watching a great defense play
💯
Sometimes I have to come back to these clips to remind me who we once were.
I had started watching NFL football in 1983 - 84 and my mate David and I went to Wembley to watch the Superbowl winners - Chicago Bears, - play 'America's team' the Dallas Cowboys in 1986. My take aways from the game were just how fast it was, how big the players were even without their armour and how pretty the cheerleaders were.
That Bears team were memorable for all sorts of reasons, but my favourites were Walter Peyton and Mike SIngletary. Both were superb players - of course - but both men were known to be really nice blokes. Peyton's nickname was 'Sweetness', but he died way too young , but Singletary is still a really nice guy.
That’s too bad Roger; the bears won 8 titles before the ‘85 super bowl
Jim McMahon is a rather solid quarterback during that time with the bears
When he was healthy and his damn back wasn’t in traction, yes he was. Yes he was.
Only game they lost in 85 was one where Jim wasnt playing.
Lol, what scheme is that, handing the ball off 40 times a game or just knowing when to (defiantly) ignore his coaches to exploit a weaknesses in the defense?
Bears haven’t had a good QB since hun.
Their defense WAS UNSTOPPABLE. at the time (being from Chicago) their offense did their but like I said their defense was unstoppable interception here inception their SAFTEY INTERCEPTION AND SACK AND FUMBLE EVEYWHERE
1985 - Such great memories for me. Dominating defense, great offense, and sweetness to top it off…!
GOAT and I'm a Native San Francisco.highsteppin leaving def breathing hard ,that's when he really started digging,he delivers the punishment, putting his head down running over lbs.Loved watching him rush the rock.Sweetness...
How appropriate that the Bears get 46 points in the Super Bowl as a tribute to the 46 Defense. I remember that season. I am not even a Bears fan but to this day the highlights of the defense are fun to watch. Every team was in their way that year and everything went right.
The good ole days. I was 22 living in the Chicago area. Now living in Indianapolis but the Bears will always be my team.
Im a packers fan but I respect this team but imo they the 1986 Mets of mlb history
People don't know how good this defense was. How good this team was.
This team honestly could have won 3 or 4 in a row.
@@williamgrant2463 They should have if they had a better coach
Idk because about 10 or so of the teams they played has either a record of 8-8 or a losing record by the end of the season so it was any easy schedule, don’t remember the exact stat. Plus defenses were benefited by rules in 85 which made offenses way less efficient. People always say offenses got benefited by rule changes which they did but defenses already were benefited but no one talks about that.
@@cam42704
Because rules favored physical defense for about 90% of the NFL’s history. The rules favoring offense are recent.
@@williamgrant2463 if they had a better offense... Statistically the ‘86 bears defense was actually better than the 85 defense. The bears went 14-2 despite their QBs throwing 12 TDs to 22 interceptions that year. They ended up losing in the divisional as they got shut down by the redskins with Flutie throwing 2 picks
Wasn't a Bears fan, but I really enjoyed watching them play that season.
Wilbur Marshall was like a heat seeking missile. Loved watching that guy play. Hated when he left to go play for the Redskins.
Overlooked maybe because of his persona is the fact that McMahon when healthy was a very good thrower on the move.
That was one hell of a year !!!! BEAR DOWN
It’s pretty amazing that many players from this team have coached or are current coaches today.

I was 8 when the Bears won. I remember watching most of these games and possibly even crying when they lost to the Dolphins. Good times. Their defense was skilled and nasty. If you think Singletary was crazy as a coach, imagine that same intensity on the field.
Run the ball and play good D. This is real football!! So sad that all the rules went toward the passing game making it such a damn crapshoot these days. Miss this NFL so much and I'm sure I'm not alone!
The "BEARS SHUFFLING CREW"..1985 I've been watching NFL GAMES since 1969 when I was 10 years old..
I will never forget /11/17/1985/ I was at Texas Stadium with friends the Bears shellacking of the Cowboys 44 to 0! That Bear team was just Scary!
Best defense I ever seen. That secondary was incredible, too. Frasier, Richardson, McKinnon, Gayle, Duerson, all of them could fly after the interception. McMahon could play, he could scramble and throw. Of course with a great running game, play action is unstoppable.

Buddy Ryan was the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets when they won the super bowl.

There were games where the defense scored more points than the offense.
I saw genuine fear in the faces of the St.Louis Rams players. I actually felt sorry for them. I believe they played the Cowboys and beat them 47-0 and coach Tom Landry told Mike Ditka while shaking his head “You guys are really good.”
Nearly every player on the team was “varsity”!
They didn’t have a junior varsity. I was in the Army in W.Germany in 1985 and television was tape delay and difficult to avoid the outcome of a game before seeing it, but still couldn’t believe it.
It was a lot like watching Mike Tyson fight early on in his career when no one survived the first round. The event was over before it began.

Super Bowl Shuffle ...
Da Bears.
I was born in 65, in Chicago. Grew up in Bloomington before moving to Ohio. Stayed a Bears fan. Watching the Super Bowl in Cincinnati i was the only one still watching after halftime. It was so sweet to watch the total domination of that game. The headline in the paper the next day was Chicago: Offense 46 Defense 46
Best team ever, no question.
Yes for ONE season
And then, the Super bowl shuffle was born! 🐻😎🕺
My favorite team to watch from my childhood
The most ultimate, grand, unbelievable one hit wonder of all time in any realm of life. Ungodly team that never approached 1985 again. Same players came back but were quite ordinary after 85. Unreal, Thought they would win 3 or 4 in a row. The Redskins, led by...Jay Shroeder,,,,made that defense look pedestrian in 86. Montana and Rice wrecked the Bears in 88, the Cowboys shut down the Bears in 91. Will never understand the dominance that never sustained. Even the Packers, Cowboys, Steelers , who had great defenses but not the 85 Bears won more than one. The stars aligned for one season. Unbelievable.
It's interesting to see what happens if the Dolphins beat the Patriots in the AFC Championship and went to the Super Bowl. One of the greatest "what ifs" in NFL history, since Miami dominated Chicago in the regular season
I don't think they dominated them did they? I thought it was a close game?
I always wondered this myself. Would’ve been a great rematch let alone a Super Bowl game.
I wouldn’t say dominated tho...38-24 is still close ..a dominant game is like 38-3 or 41-10 ...
Dominated? ❓
My friend will go to his grave with the belief the Dolphins would have beaten Chicago in the Super Bowl.
I keep telling him, not in the rematch. The Bears were hungry, Ditka and Ryan wouldn’t have the blow up like they did during the Miami loss and the Dolphins defense wouldn’t be able to stop Payton.
Duh Bears! The best year for long time Bears fans. I rooted for them back in the Butkus and Sayers days as a child. After a generation they finally got around to it. My Bears!
As great as Butkus & Sayers were:neither ever reached a playoff game!

It was a thing of beauty whenever the Defense took the field in '85. The personalities and skillsets of every single guy just seemed to gel and come together perfectly that season. Buddy Ryan was definitely the man! He had the respect of his guys and even Ditka had to give credit where credit was due when it came to Buddy and his "hit squad". Definitely every QB's nightmare that year.
The 1985 Bears are famous for their defense and for good reason. But people don't pay attention to how good their offense was under McMahon. This was an excellent all around team. As dominant as you will ever see.
2 things...
1 - its amazing that team was able to stay healthy the whole season
2 - if im a QB about to face the bears im calling out sick🤧
That Mon. night in Miami( I was 15) the Fish were simply too fast and Marino had the best receiving tandem in the league with the "Marks" brothers.
super bowl would have been nice
That + they were the only team that figured out the antidote to the 46 defense
I so much wanted to see a rematch, but the Dolphins D was pretty bad by that time, especially against the run. Arnsparger was gone by then and it showed.
Bears lost focus and it showed. Didn’t help that a Marinho pass literally bounces off a receiver’s helmet, right into the hands of another receiver for a td. Yeah, that was planned . Let’s stop the nonsense about Miami winning the superbowl if this or that. They didn’t get there.

The 70's Steel Curtain was the second best defense of all time over a long stretch. If you take their best 8 years from 72-79 only the Vikings from 69-76 were better.
@@bryanjones4444 maybe so, but who won more super bowls during that period? Damn sure weren't the Vikings mayne-
@@bryanjones4444 statistically speaking, yeah ur absolutely right, but we have to include the fact that the steel curtain led the team to 4 Super Bowls, mostly because of them, and beat the Vikings in the big game too
