La verdad cada una destaca vocal y dramáticamente en alguna característica peculiar de la reina Elizabeth: Caballé la belleza del canto, Gencer la fortaleza, Sills la reina-mujer, Gruberova la locura y Devia el deber. This is astonishingly good... that period when Montsé was at her most passionate, abandoned and bold. This is really great dramatic singing & I don't know why anyone bothers to compare to Sills's performance. The two singers are so different that a comparison is pointless. If you want to hear a woman sound moved, hurt, sensitive, vengeful, mad, despairing - all in a matter of minutes - then listen to this live performance & marvel at the technical virtuosity of this artist. Oh! to have been in the audience to hear this - it must have been transformative to experience the energy as well as the artistry. Spellbinding!

For me the best in this role was Beverly Sills. Just a pitty Callas never sang it! Caballé lacks in this role of the agility needed, a great voice, a very beautiful voice, but not for Roberto Devereux.
Sills owns this role. Caballe never was good for agility. In the second half of her career, there's always a sort of heaviness in her way of singing (not to mention the catastrophic later years). Like if she had the voice of her physique. Here she's rather good though, I admit.
A pesar del grave, de algunos aspavientos de mal gusto, y de cierta suciedad en parte de la coloratura, sigue siendo mucho mejor que Sills en el canto spianato. El color de la voz es el de una reina, la actitud vocal también, y el fraseo en estos años también, en general. Sills tenía una voz más amplia y ágil, pero solo la supera en el canto fiorito. Creo que hay versiones mejores de Caballé de principios de los 70. No estoy tan de acuerdo en que Caballé tuviera una mala coloratura, simplemente era una soprano con una buena coloratura, pero no una soprano de coloratura. Muchas supuestas especialistas en el canto de agilidad tampoco son muy limpias al llegar a la zona grave de la voz, y Caballé a cambio ofrece todo lo que el papel requiere. Sills lo hizo suyo, lo cantó muy bien, pero a la voz le falta algo que la de Caballé sí tenía.

Her agility here is a minor issue. This is very early Caballe, long before she entered her lazy-I'll-do-whatever-I-want phase.
Sills lacks development in her chest voice, she doesn’t have her low and her middle notes which are so important in Bel Canto. Caballe sings this role with a full body of voice.
Mamadera!!! Qué horrible la orquesta en los primeros acordes. Después mejora un poco, sobre todo porque Caballé habrá sido puntualmente inflexible para demostrar su arte, logrando que suene armoniosa en cual caso. Me perturba mucho como comienzan los acordes antes de que empiece ella a cantar las partes, v.g. antes del vivi ingrato. Se lo estará cantando al director?
Caballe in prime is just unbeatable, the amount of emotion she pours into the role is incomparable.

Definitely a stronger middle and lower voice than Sills in this role. The high agility though, of course, was never her real forte.
