Callas sings Lucia di Lammermoor for the first time in Mexico City under Guido Picco with Giuseppe di Stefano. She will go on to perform the role 46 times in her career up to November 1959 in Dallas. - Hudba
They must have known they were hearing the greatest singer in the world.
Her voice was absolutely gigantic, even in the most florid coloratura passages! So beautiful. Sadly, I'm not optimistic that's the world will ever be blessed with someone of such talent.
Her voice was unique in the truest sense of the word...one of a kind. Such an unusual voice probably comes along once a century at most.
Donizetti never expected this glory. Callas is and will always be CALLAS………
Those cavernous chest tones followed by the electric-paced trills in Regnava. No one else!
Yeah!
It’s almost difficult to imagine a performance this incredible really happened… I can’t comprehend hearing something like this live
*Some people think Callas didn't have a big voice, but in the early days she was frequently hired for the heaviest Wagnerian roles. A year before this performance, Callas' voice drowned out soloists (including Del Monaco!), chorus, and orchestra, in the famous high Eb she interpolated in performances of Aida. And here she is singing Lucia! The audience probably did not know what to think of such a large voice singing Lucia.*
This singing is just ridiculously incredibly beautiful. I cannot imagine anyone else will ever be able to match this level.
Only Callas could sing Lucia like this! No one else! La Divina! Casta Diva! Belissima! Bravo!
Renata Tebaldi... Sorry, it was a joke. 🙃
What about Malibran?
@@bobrist18duzb40 She was great also. I saw her in this role and many others.
I first heard Maria in 1952 in Norma and followed her recording onwards.....god's gift to opera.
The dialog between Callas and the flute is pure magic!
Absolutely phenomenal! Audiences experiencing this glorious singing at the time must have been even more astonished (if possible) than we are today. Callas was then and remains a unique and indispensable artist.
this is just so amazing, and even though there were very talented Lucia's, nobody can give you what Callas did in the role: MAGIC.
an apex of human achievement.
An apex indeed...
i could just picture maria crying her eyes out with tears of joy in her dressing room and when she was taking her curtain calls.
Astonishing strength of voice - I cannot further praise this amazing artist.
Unforgetable performance of Callas debut. She was through all her life and still is the greatest interpreter of Lucia. Pure magic.
Callas is Norma; Norma is Callas, also 2023 !!!!!!!!!!
Callas' voice is the only one that can paint with great strokes, textures, colors, and proper shades for any operatic role she portrayed as a singer, and let's not forget the drama that she created. A great virtuoso!
Great sound for such an old performance! As to La Divina self, what I hear here is beyond human possibilities.
Thank you.
Seventy plus years later we have yet to hear anything like this.
I wonder what an impression it was for the public to hear that role the first time sung by a voice of such size and darkness. No Lilly Pons, or Toti dal Monte... Must have been a shock! Callas gave back to the role the dramatic weight it deserves.
Lily and Toti were wonderful singers. Its hard for me to hear the vulnerability in a bigger voice. Pons' sound had the fragility Lucia needs. Callas sings this role very well though and its very wonderful to hear her sing in the correct vocal fach. I'm sure we would have enjoyed her genius much longer if she would've stayed in the coloratura repertoire which suited her voice the best.
@@jimbuxton2187 Unfortunately for her from a vocal health standpoint though, her voice did have an ostensibly dramatic quality though (which is to say colour not weight). So it’s understandable why she had to establish herself in heavier rep first. I think if someone had paved the way for her first, she would have specialized in heavier coloratura rep right from the start.
@@jimbuxton2187 Sure thing that other singers did wonderful Lucias. My point is something different: how was the role meant by Donizetti? There is such an interesting characterization of the voice of Fanny Tacchinardi-Persiani, for whom Donizetti wrote Lucia, which was described as a high Mezzo-soprano with an extension to high e and high f. But the best part of her voice seemed to be in the middle with the possibility for powerful accents in the lower register. The sound was described as sweet with a bitter note. Sounds not like a high coloratura of the type Pons, dal Monte, Galli-Curci etc. Sounds a bit like a description of Callas' voice to me.
@@tenorette2003 ...I'm sure you know the mad scene was originally in F. I don't see how a lower tessitura voice could handle that. Even callas as high as her voice was did it in Eb....thank you for your interesting perspective though....( makes one wonder....sweet with a bitter note would be more like Mesple or Robin to me! ) I don't find any sweetness in the callas tone... in her interpretation maybe but not her tone. That's why she was such a convincing Turandot!
@@jimbuxton2187 Thanks for your answer. Yes, the Mad scene was originally written in F, but I don't think it was sung in this key. It's reported that Donizetti had to transpose even Arias from "L' elisir" downwards for Tacchinardi-Persiani. I think it's the same case as "Casta diva" which was written in G but never sung by Pasta, the original Norma, in this key. Another point is, that it's doubtful that the 19th century divas did the endings on sustaind high notes we expect today. Presumably they touched those high notes in cadenzas and abellishments.
Her e flats are just amazing
She confounded not only the audience, but all the experts. They had to write something, but didn't know how😂
What do you mean?
I think he wants to say that there are no words. Never was heard a voice like that that could sing at the same time Lycia and Turandot. Never was heard Lucia sang with that colors, that phrasing and with a such dark voice but able to sing such big hight notes and trills....never more...
The one the only the Callas.
And the one and only Lucia.
Callas#100!
She will always be the absolute best soprano that ever existed! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Always! Always! The Voice of God-be sure you see the applause which broke out as her coffin was carried in Paris-it will finish you off altogether. Viva Maria!!!!!!!!
My favorite bel canto singer!
And the prompter tried to steal the show.
January 1954!!! Scala show the Best Lucia ever!!!
As always, speechless to musicality that goes beyond artistic perfection.
The unmistakable voice and genius of Maria Callas-What is there to compare?
Nothing…
My God. I think is Maria's finest single recording, ever, even discounting some damn fine Violettas she realised...
24:11 From C6 in ringing, crystalline head voice to D4 in her legendary, wonderful, deep chest voice.
Absolutely amazing!! A perfect interpretation of a dramatic role, brought to level unreachable by others!! A voice with an incredible timbre, depth, accuracy and drama!!
SUPERHUMAN CALLAS!!!! Maria tha breath of God!!!
Amazing! She infused so much of her own soul into each, and every note! She, and she ALONE, makes me think that I have never heard true music before! Unbelievable!! ...I can only say, that if I had been in the chorus for THIS phenomenal Mad Scene, I would have forgotten to sing a note, and stood there completely transfixed! ...Her voice is like the Grand Canyon! A complete miracle! THANK YOU so much for uploading this! Susan
Susan, I think that if you had learned the chorus for the mad scene, the sheer emotion on stage would have impelled you to respond. You'd be so caught up in what Mme Callas was delivering that you'd probably have sung viscerally, without thought of technique but with a huge amount of empathy.
@@patrickgallagher3513I just listened again! You know, Regnava nel silenzio is about Lucia seeing a ghost. By the end of the opera, she has completely lost her grip on sanity, because she had to marry someone other than her soulmate. Maria Callas had me crying from her very first note of the Mad Scene. Thank God she existed, and can inspire musicians henceforth! To say I love her musicality is putting it mildly! It was nice to meet you! Take care. Susan
The voice is steady as a rock here.
Wow! she was out of this world. What a voice she truly was an operatic monster.
Unica...divina
The trills though
DIVINAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1952… the same year she sang Norma at Covent Garden for the first time and Lady Macbeth for the opening season at La Scala !
So easy vocally. It is interesting that her opening aria did not change much over the years, whereas the mad scene became considerably more detailed even just a year or two later.
incredibile e maestosa
🇧🇬BELLISSIMA DIVINA!!!🐘
🌹WONDERFUL!!!🦄🍀
🌸BRAWISSISSISSIMO!!!🌞🌈🎼🎶🎵
La Divina
Joan Sutherland has been quoted saying: "If you haven't heard Callas before 1955, you haven't heard the real Callas voice." Here you can hear what she meant.
It is impossible to listen to Pons, Tettrazzini, Galli-Curci… today. The school of singing at that time was very different, smaller theaters and lower diapason. So, yes it had to be a shock to listen such beautiful rendition of this role.
SIEMPRE MARAVILLOSA
Did I JUST DIE !?
I bought a ticket to the opera for Lucia and will listen to it in a month. Unfortunately, I expect to be disappointed. Vocal like Callas's don't exist anymore.:(((((
Then don't go....give your ticket to someone who isn't living in the past and who knows about singing.
Gracias!
Så utroligt at høre hende. Tak Maria.
❤❤❤ Maria ❤❤❤
Wow! Was that a high E flat at the end? So clear and powerful!
Bravoooooooo María Bravoooooooo ❤❤❤❤
🎉Amazing! Beautiful!

Maria....illumina il canto moderno per favore. Amen
This was the real Callas voice.....
¡SOBREHUMANA!,
La Dea Callas
Ευτυχώς έχω το CD καί ακούω
Don't know about Lucia, but sure some listeners nearly died from rapture!
Maria once said in this performance that In the last scene of act I she felt her voice was getting heavy so she had to vocalize during the intermezzo
How do you know?
@@thailonazevedo8843 I don't remember exactly but she said this in a radio interview or interview with Harewood in Paris 1968. It is on youtube.
Hai ragione amico. La voce di Maria è un miracolo. Ho visto su rai storia qualche giorno fa Maria by Callas. Un documentario a Lei dedicato. Finalmente. Perché se ne parla pochissimo in TV?
Nice sound, thank you! Regnava is from June 10 (debut), but the mad scene is from June 14, right?
