  • This video shows the process of using the chroma key / green screen tools in Kdenlive and Adobe Premiere Pro side by side.
Kdenlive is 100% free and open source software that runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac.
Adobe Premiere Pro is a heavily marketed proprietary software that runs on Windows and Mac.
Both are professorial level programs and achieved a similar looking chroma key effect in a comparable amount of time.

Even free and open-source software can give amazing results just as the commercial one.

I had a few issues while trying to use Kdenlive several years ago... I think 5+ years ago now, but I'm glad to see it's still around and probably far more robust than back then.
It wasn't chroma though... some weirdness on putting clips on the timeline, erasing it, taking it back, and then duplicating it. For whatever reason the timeline wasn't mapping to the right files, and so the clips got all messed up with content of other clips... super weird bug. The only way I could find to eventually solve it was just starting over... no matter what I did, refreshing things, trying to mess with settings and whatnot, it just made things worse. xD
I was trying to switch over back then, but haven't needed to use the software for sometime now. Worked with Premiere, a little bit with Final Cut, and initially learned how to edit on Sony Vegas. I also messed with but didn't do any serious work with Resolve, and about half a dozen open source alternatives... Kdenlive is nice because the interface is the closest to Premiere out of all open source alternatives I tested.
But I think it's safe to say that simple cuts, transitions, text inserts and basic stuff is pretty much covered with open source.
You start having problems when you get into effects. There are alternatives, and there are open source options, but they are wildly different.
Also... what is the state of video stabilization in open source NLEs? This is something I meant to test back then but I don't quite remember how it went or if I even tried. Because it's a very involved process, and the way After Effects and Premiere does it is very specific to it.

Thanks dude. I wish I knew what the difference between them was apart from the steps that is.

Looking at the man's pony tail at 0:57, Kdenlive has done a better job of keeping details.
Thanks for posting this video. :-)

I am using Shotcut and I do not think using Premiere Pro would give me an advantage over the free editors in almost all cases.
