Kennan owns an e39 M5? Huh. Never heard it mentioned.
@@A52_E92 whooosh
@@A52_E92yep, this is my first day on the Internet. It's pretty ok I guess
Haha
Did you know he used to own a 355 and then sold it for a profit?
😮 I have so much to learn!
Kennan is the type of guy to mention he owns an E39 M5 in every conversation.
I've noticed that most people who own 'M Cars' tend to rarely ever talk about them.
Vegans and M owners!! Haha
And your the type of guy who is not a true car guy. bias hater 👎🏻 im no big m fan but if that is his fav car quit hatin what are you pullin up in
As he should.
@@Nightrunnergunner I drive a Ferrari 360. And it was just a joke because Kennan always mention his M5 in Doug's podcast. I guess, you are the type of guy to get offended at everything.
'This car doesnt leak oil.....right now'
😅
Just what I was thinking… wait 3 years
It will, he knows it will, and he doesn't care. That's love
Kennan is the exact opposite of every BMW M owner i ever met/saw 😂
He is the exact one you’d want to buy a used BMW or M car off of though 😂
That’s a lot of accounting for someone that’s never gonna sell it!
And honestly, it’s a very bland spec for this car too. I get the love and obsession if it wasn’t silver with black interior, but it is just that, and doesn’t look particularly good in his spec.
Kennan is more German than his car =) never seen such perfect list of expenses
So this is Emily? What a lovestory!
I came to say this. Beth's true identity revealed.
Kennan needs to make a video on how to make a car "show ready". Including what products he uses because the information about this online seems to be mostly sponsored crap.
Oooh, interesting! Agree!
In a few months he will be recommending the Cars & Bid Soap, C&B Wax, C&B ceramic coating, and Doug's Magic Juice!
@@BrianWEnglish Doug's Magic Juice 🤤🤤🤤
@@2JRaz I know you'll be buying!
I always admire people that are willing to put up with stratospheric maintenance costs out of sheer enthusiasm.
Also a constant reminder that BMW ownership outside of a warranty is not for me.
I would hope that it'll be cheaper over the next 8 years. If it's at like 80 grand after 16 years then it's not completely terrible.
Still a ton of money though, I think you'd be hard pressed to spend more on maintaining a Jag or Maserati of a similar age. I wonder if an E55 would be cheaper.
Some people actually enjoy the process of having to maintain a BMW. It makes it feel special and a reminder that it’s an enthusiast option. It’s almost like how modding is enjoyable to some people or washing your car and keeping it shiny. It’s really silly, but lots of things are silly.
I also see why it's probably more convenient to lease them for ~3 years and them move on.
@@warderjack Not going to get an E39 that way though.
Every couple months I ponder an E46 M3 because I think they are stunning but after watching Kennan talk about his M5 adventures... never.
I was previously considering buying an E39 540i but watching this video brought me to my senses, thanks Kennan
i just bought one of those and it came with a stack of maintenance records. included in it was a single $11,400 service two years ago that practically replaced everything
@@dominic7114 That's probably the only circumstance in which i'd buy one, and i'd still be worried about reliability
I’ll save you the time, don’t buy one
I wanted an E39 540i, I compromised, I went with a M113-powered AMG Mercedes instead. Never looked back since.
If you know nothing about cars or don’t know how to turn a wrench which seems like you don’t stay far away from that bmw
Older high milage bmws arnt for everyone, but they are for kennan
roughly 700 bucks a month to own without gas and insurance and of course, the actual purchase of the vehicle!
Yes, but way overboard with some completely unnecessary repairs/parts replacement.
this total makes Doug's Countach looking like a cheap car to own.
That e39 owns you
And that’s why the shop calls him “Blank check Kennan.”
Doug: I am the most quirky person!
Keenan: hold my 🍺
Kennan: hold my 💳
Kennan: "Hold my e39 m5."
I'm just going to say... if you ever were to buy a used M5, there will probably be NOBODY who's done the maintenance as thoroughly as Kennan. The level of thoughtful persnickitty-ness is next level. This man has loved this beautiful piece of German performance machinery!
Kennan should do a Cannonball Run, to prove its reliable for a cross country run,
You know it would be 5mph under the speed limit the whole way
It would take him 12 weeks. He would have to stop and have every rock chip repaired by a German paint specialist flown in from Munich.
🤣😂🤣
Kennan has come so far in such a short amount of time, and really is fun to watch. I also have to hand it to Doug, I remember a few years ago he released a video about wishing he could have a channel where he wasn't alone, and that could have some of his friends make or be in videos, and what he's been doing recently with the Cars & Bids channel and the podcast on the main channel, they have been fun to watch.
As a Technician, this guy is a dream customer haha
A shop owner sure, not the tech lol
Holy crap. I just realized I went to Hudson high school with Kennan. There were two guys a couple years older than me that both had E39 M5s. The retro picture sparked my memory
I played in the Hudson Band show
i was conceived on the football field at Hudson.
@@iamatlantis1that's interesting. I conceived on the football field at Hudson.
H.S. kids driving M5's? 😲
@@RichRotorhead yea it was a rich town. His buddy's dad had a Ferrari.
While I had a 2000 Honda Odyssey.
man the paint and shine looks amazing for have 200k miles and being over 20 years old, well done.
Agreed. Another commenter said he should do a video on what cleaning and protection products he uses.
I agree, I noticed the same thing. It looks spectacular and doesn’t even show its miles
For some reason imperfections on cars don't always show in pictures.
My '01 Corvette was 14 years old and had 72k miles on it when I bought it. I had it 8 years and had 201k miles when I sold it. I did a clutch that was $2k for an LS7 clutch, a $50 water pump and a $30 radiator overflow tank. Everything else was standard maintenance of oil, belts and hoses. That car was insanely reliable and got 26mpg average with the 6 speed.
Same with chevy SS.
If the c5 or c6 had better interiors, I'd have one right now!
@@DudeSWEEET the seats are terrible, I changed that first thing.
1999 Top Gear review of the E39 M5 by Tiff Needell. Most epic intro/start to a review ever. Still gives me goosebumps to this day.
Should go halfsies on maintenance bills with Emily.
wonder how much "Emily" makes a year. (we're talking about the car right?)
Umm 🤨
Isn't she already? 😂
😢😢😢
Emily apparently has her own Porsche that she maintains meticulously
What’s the story behind “Emily jokes”?
@@Ivan-xo2td bruh how do you not know Emily? Emily is literally Kennan's second sweetheart (after E39). Emily is Kennan's (fictional) girlfriend and she kicked him out of the house. Watch the office tour lol
And yet, if you owned a Tesla Model S Plaid, all that would have been depreciation. So, Kennan, FREAKING ENJOY, DUDE!
💯 true story!!
What if you need to know what gas you put in it October 2022, location, amount paid, octane rating, humidity level in the air when you opened the gas cap. Then what Kennan.
Don’t ignore us Kennan. We need to know.
He even knows if he was on his way to date Emily and what she ordered for dinner that day.
Sheldon Cooper vibes lol
That is absolutely insane and exactly why I sold mine. Yes I miss it, and it was one of the nicest driving experiences I’ve owned. Glad I bought it. Glad I sold it. Used German cars…
I'm starting to get mine ready for the big send off 😔
I really appreciate the way he treats his car tho. It feels like its more of a friend or a company than a car
These old BMWs are very expensive to maintain. I have an E46 (325xi) that has cost me a corolla car payment per month of ownership.
Really depends on what you do upfront when you buy and the original condition when you bought it. E46 325s are gonna be more clapped out in general, not even the most desirable non m e46. My uncle in law has a e46 330ci and has only done scheduled maintenance since new and it’s still perfect. Deferred maintenance can wreak havoc on them, and if you’re not doing the labor yourself, a rough example can break you. Still not as expensive as a cheap Mercedes.
They’re cheaper if you do the work yourself
@@nicopaoletti3501 For sure. The condition of this car was poor. It still doesn't run perfectly - I have an idle fluctuation that I've given up on solving and either the oil pressure switch is faulty or the check valves on the oil squirters under the crank have failed. Having said all of this, it's a tremendously good winter beater for the Sierra mountains. 5-speed with AWD and it's not a Subaru - all good things. It's done about 20k miles under my ownership.
Especially the SULEV cars with the m56, do not buy one of those unless you hate yourself
They are such nice cars though. I haven't owned any, but whenever I have driven BMW's of this era they are solid feeling and very confident cars.
I would love to own one, but I don't want to get that involved in a car.
If Kennan is so passionate about the M5, then it is money well spent. I've owned my BMW i3 for 5 years now and all I've spent on that is for a new Airbag sensor which needed replacing and screen wash. The car is still on its original brakes at 80,000km. Apparently, me owning an EV makes me a non-car enthusiast but I love the reliability and lack of maintenance. That and I am tight and BMW maintenance costs scare the shite out of me.
@ewadge just you wait until you have an issue with the parking brake light and BMW's only solution is a $5000 full replacement of the entire ABS unit, all lines and both rear parking brake actuators. Just happened to a buddy of mine and he was able, after EONS of research, of which none is on the internet, figure it out and fix it on his own and save himself 5K. Then there's also the ever looming AC issue that cools the car AND the battery that is multiple thousands when that goes and it will. Then there's the carbon fiber reinforced plastic monocoque that will immediately total the car with any small fender bender, or and the proprietary skinny tires only made by Bridgestone any longer, have to gobble up as many as you can before they are no longer made.
Yeah, despite all of these maintenance costs E39M5 FTW over an i3, in fact any E39 over the i3 ALL DAY LONG BABY.
I don’t know that crashing the car and repairing it is considered “maintenance”
You really can’t expect to use a car on a daily basis and never, ever, meet other bodywork. Accidents do happen if you drive, just accept it.
@@raulsalanaranjo6565 Ok, that still doesn't make it maintenance.
@@kuebbyhe said the 3 most expensive years of ownership
I've never really paid particular attention to BMW's, but this is excellent content. Mad respect to Kennan. Absolute madlad.
Had one for 12 years and put 65k miles on it, total of 130k miles. Let it out 3 years ago as I thought some big bills were coming…this confirms that!!
Amazing car, but don’t regret letting it go.
The moment the paperwork appeared and seemed thicker than 15 years of 80s V12 Jaguar ownership was troubling.
As an owner of a 2000 m5 I recognize that smile. 9 years later and it still puts a smile on my face. Even my first bmw - a 1997 540i sport 6 speed makes me grin when I downshift and Mash the gas pedal . The E39 platform has phenomenal chassis dynamics that is hard to beat- even today . When they’re well maintained they are very capable when pushed close to their limits.
I bought an early '00 e39 M5 new, Avus Blue over Silverstone, 4:3 screen, pre-halo lights. Drove it hard for 40k miles, on and off track, but sold it within warranty because you just knew it would cost a fortune to maintain as the years went by. I sometimes miss it but then these videos remind me I probably made the right call.
It's not more maintenance than depreciation on a newer car
You made the wrong choice these are going up in value by the day
@@mvpjoshy9688yeah but have you considered how much it would it have cost him to have properly maintained it all of the years since he sold it???
@@mvpjoshy9688 They're worth like 18 grand
Thanks for this video Kennan. I have a 2003 540i M-Sport (purchased on Cars & Bids!) and I share your passion! It’s such a fantastic car and I will keep mine forever. I’m surprised you fixed all the oil leaks… I’m still chasing some on mine.
E39 M5 owner here. Allot of the maintenance is very diy-able. Mine has 118k miles and most of the maintenance I have done in the past 4 years of ownership has been preventative. The M5 forum is great and plenty of youtube videos to help you repair it. However, allot of the parts can be expensive... I think it is worth to maintain and keep in good condition because the car will last a long time. The quality of the interior and the joy of driving it hard never gets old. I redline it pretty much every time I take it out.
Total $59K for mechanic to service. I found that if you DIY the car you will save 90 - 85% of that cost, so the DIY bill should come out to $6k-9K in parts fluids and special tools over 8 years, with cost decreasing since all the major work has been done.
Most projects can be done over a weekend, extensive jobs a couple weekends, those are rare.
I DIY an e34 540i and it is 5 - 10% compared to mechanic service cost. The lower cost is due to the much simpler design and planning ahead, stocking parts when you see discount. I daily this car it is very reliable at 220K miles and the low cost to maintain for next 80K miles since all the major maintenance has been done.
Very fun to drive, DIY and own, the Ultimate Driving Machine!
Except your time is worth money as well, especially if you dont have much to begin with.
Each of us start the day with the same amount of time, 24 hours, how you choose to use them is a choice.
My E34 540i is a full immersive experience, and kills two birds with one stone, I really enjoy wrenching on this wonderfully designed machine and I enjoy the eminence savings on maintenance, repairs and upgrades. That is also why wrenching is only a weekend activity!
DIY is the experience of knowing and understanding the E34 540i at its core, where non DIYers have that sinking feeling when the car acts up or throws an error code, I enjoy the opportunity in analysing and resolving the root cause by wrenching a fix. I enjoy and appreciate the E34 design sustainability over newer BMW design obsolescence, and has forever changed my views on BMW and cars in general!
There is a freedom and an adventure with not worrying about breaking your BMW and that you can fix it for next to nothing!
When I drive my BMW hard and enjoy the engineering that went into the design and how it performs on the road it is the Ultimate Driving Experience!
Didn’t realize how big of a money pit this is. I would have sold it years ago
4:48 Kennan put a FERRARI sticker on BMW rear window. LOL
From what I remember he owns a Ferrari, so why not?
He owns one so yeah he can put it
He sold it though.
its a memento from hiim having a 355
Those giggles for no reason at all
Are killing me
Love that binder of receipts.
Have the same with my '96 9000 Aero, about 90% of work is documented from previous owners & 100% from me. 30+ years worth!
As an owner of 1999 e39 528i I fully understand your love to this m5. Great cars. I still look at mine with excitement. Wish you the very best!
Great insights, great video!
As an E39 fanatic, I’ve followed Kennan from his E39 Source days…even remember a time before he owned an M5 with his humble 525i…fond memories. E39 will go down as the most timeless sedan!
E39 5 series might be one of the best looking sedans ever. The late 1990s/early 2000s was a great time when it comes to sedan design.
I know it's pricey but fuck I still love these
That poor paint match would drive me insane. I don’t know how he hasn’t went for a full respray yet.
Never stop talking about this car Kennan.
My dad had one for 10 years in the exact spec before we he liquidated , just rhd for the South African market, every mention is like a trip down memory lane because he never shut up about it, until it was gone. He doesn't even acknowledge me talking about it now.
Never stop talking about this car.
Kennan reminds me why we’ve had at least a dozen BMWs in the family, and why they were all leased. I do agree that this is the best looking M5 built. If money were no object, I might consider one.
I very much respect how much you care for your car and how you proceed to sustain it
This was a good video. Keep it up Kennan.
Kennan seems a good guy, nice of him to openly discuss the prang too.
That body shop did a very good job, the front looks great, you can't tell.
It’s so good to see another person to keep all service records in a binder with protective sheets and a yearly cost spreadsheet. Impressive!
DAMN! Kennan!
That book is bigger than the one I got when I bought my Vette. I thought the previous owner maintained the car before me but you've taken the crown sir. 😊
You BMW enthusiasts are a different breed, and I mean that as a compliment. I can't imagine dropping that much $ to keep my R129 SL on the road (yes, I understand an M car from the 00s is more special than an R129), whenever I see someone on the road with a BMW M car I salute them, I suppose they're worth it and maintaining them is kind of a badge of honor.
Thanks Kennan for making this video and providing lots of insight into your ownership of it. I’ve been interested in an E39 M5 for quite some time now and I’m glad to see you enjoy yours
This car is going to be the ship of Thesseus by the time Kennan is done :) Great to hear of such passion for a car, especially such a noteworthy one.
Enjoyed this video a lot, Kenan, good stuff. Can't worry about the cost too much when it brings you that much joy.
I’m loving these Kennan vids!
FINALLY some E39 M5 content, bless 🙏🏻. I miss my E39 so much, it completely saved my life when some asshole passed me on the shoulder and crashed into me. Absolute TANK of a car that felt massless on a backroad.
I’m 20 years old and about 6 months ago bought an e39 M5 in silverstone metallic with 90k miles and it is an amazing car. I’ve owned bmws before but this is the best car I’ve ever owned.
Nice video! It's not that much money when you consider that it used to be the fastest limousine in the world. Especially as it really had a lot of kilometers and is in good condition. Leasing a 320d costs just €1000 per month - that puts it into perspective. As a child, my first NfS made the M5 my absolute favorite car. Keep it alive!
Love it! I also own a TiAg E39 M5 which just passed 217k miles. I agree Keenan, it’s the best sedan ever made. I’ll never sell it. Cheers to you for loving and caring for the ultimate driving machine. Keep the content coming 🙌
Hold on to it, sooner or later BMWs will be going up in value. We have had ours 2013 328i E92 straight 6 N51 of smog, but with the 3 stage manifold the results are just😢 vantastic. It's a great car. Say what they may say. Good luck and happy touring.
I appreciate the soft wall adornments for echo control! Cheers!
this video helped me realize the key to owning an aging german sports car, just focus on one car. such a great video
Sounds like the story with my 560SEL. However, I've done all the work on it myself. Was still pricey, but like his car, mine is in like-new condition mechanically. Working on cosmetic restoration as we speak!
Gotta like Kennan. A true car nerd, and his presentation abilities have improved so much over the last year.
Own an E92 M3 that needs a couple odds and ends but drives perfectly. This video is exactly why older BMWs get their reputation - it's not necessarily that they catastrophically fail, but it's because the "while you're in there" list never ends, and parts and labor for these non-glamorous items can very quickly become astronomical. Well done though Kennan. You've done more than I could possibly imagine doing to my E92 M3.
I bought my Ford Fusion about 2 weeks before you bought your M5 (end of October, 2015), and like you, I still have the car. Difference is in that time I've put 170k on the car (currently at 238k)- and its showing its age; I might get rid of it soon, after summer. Your M5 still looks amazing!
I commend you for putting so much into it - I know I couldn't stomach it.
11:56 "Rear crankshart cover with seal" 😂
the viper lurking the in the background is terrifying
Kennan took the middle seat on a flight to buy his E39. Now that’s dedication.
😅
Hey from Germany and I thought I am that kind of crazy with my cars. Ok, I BET Kennan has also all the fuel receipes and where you took your car, parking tickets and such? I have a binder about that too, but my binder is not that crazy thick like yours (but I did not drive a single German car... to regular to see on the streets here^^).
But don't worry, here in Germany the E39 M5 and every other BMW is also crazy expensive.. it must be true love with yours. And for everyone hating: Don't forget that this BMW has over 370 000 km (220 000 miles) on it and is in immaculate condition.
Great video!!
As insane as it is to see these maintenance bills, I love seeing someone else so enamored by a car even after so many years and pain of ownership.
Great video Kennan!
Really Wholesome how much you enjoy your car, and that's the most important thing after all and great to see, how much you care about keeping it as close to new as possible
Awesome episode Kennan
was looking for this exact vid recently lol, couldn’t find a dedicated video
I’m in the process of buying one rn
I absolutely love your car. My husband and I were going to buy one new, years ago. We now have an E30 vert and an E30 coupe. Love the wheels on your car.
Love the wheels Kennan! Makes it look amazing.
Absolutely magnificent specimin, Only a 'Kennan' could keep one of these at the level of maintainance that these masterpeices of automotive excellence that are the e39 M5 - undoubedly peak bmw. What people dont get about owning a car like this, is its less an ownership than a stewardship - those that take on the responsibility treat it as that - a responsibility an honor - to keep something truly special in perfect working order, for themselves, and future generations to one day enjoy.Full respect Kennan, youre a true enthusiast and gentleman.
We have owned a 2001 E39 M5 here in Canada since 2007. It’s a Summer car with only 90,000kms on it, and it’s barely ever been Winter driven. I don’t ever remember that car having any major issues, most of the $$ put into it have been spent on transforming the car into the Eurospec. It is a fact that Canada cars tend to be more reliable than their US counterparts, largely due to the higher quality fuel.
The viper acr in the back is wild
I like this video and I like Kennan and I like seeing Kennan’s organizational habits.
i can see why kennan is a good employee for a company like cars and bids
I get it. Worth all the time and money. Cars are meant to be driven. It only breaks when it sits. Keep racking up the miles!
Doug makes this channel successful, but Kennan makes it interesting.
Ken may not be selling now but he sure makes this to refer to when he wants to get 50% above market value
I’m happy he’s making a video about the M5, it’s a much better overview than another CZcamsrs 911 That they gush over after owning it for six months and will flip it in another six months
Kennan, don’t be afraid to upgrade, someday. Drove my 98 Camaro SS 18 years, then into my c7 grand sport. I will keep them both until I can’t push in a clutch.
Glad to know there are other insane car owners out there.
LOL 8 Yeats and 60k in repairs/maintenance. Nice!!! 😂👌🏼
The stack of receipts was a shock for sure. Kennan’s dedication is admirable. Like a captain going down with his ship. ;-)
$0.76 / mile is wild.
You need to be in love to do this.
True fans of Kennan will remember his first videos and the support he got from us. Glad to see him confident today
eyyyy i see good acoustic paneling, finally
well done Keenan. A steward of a classic.
