Thank you, I find your videos really helpful.. I'm a beginner and am just skating everywhere to get comfortable on my board.. I always wear protective pads and a helmet whenever I go skating, I just look at it like sparring in Taekwondo we always pad up before fighting, and I believe I have already saved myself from injuries.. so my advice to other fellow beginners out there.. wear pads and a helmet.. it might feel a bit weird if you're not used to wearing gear.. But I would rather persevere with that feeling than being out for 6 weeks due to some injury and not even being able to skate..

TRUE! I’ve been skating seriously for about a week, after discovering Braille in some LEGO CZcams ad. It hasn’t been that long for me, an I’m still learning a lot about board control and gaining muscle.
Last night I was at the skatepark doing kickturns back and forth on a ramp and a box, trying so hard to get all the way up the box. I didn’t have any water and was starting to feel sick (like that awful cold feeling like frost is in your lungs) so I decided to quit for the night.
And tonight, I was sure to bring three bottles of water. I managed to get up and back down the box in about half an hour.

    My little bit of advice...
Be aware of how long an injury will put you out of skating and how that will affect your progression.
No point pushing yourself too hard and hoping for a bit of luck when trying to land a new trick, if you roll your ankle you may not skate at all for 2-3 weeks. That’s gonna slow your progression way more than if you just stop skating for the day and come back tomorrow. Or practicing the trick on the flat for a another couple days before trying it down the 3 stair etc.

Also a good way to know what you might be doing wrong if you can't land a trick is to film it and watch it in slow motion

Terrific advice! I'd add to find a well maintained park where experienced skaters like to go. Even if they look intimidating, they are usually really nice and often will give you great tips. Also, wear ALL the padding you can and learn to fall. Don't worry if no one else is wearing it. It's really not that bad and you won't be sorry you had those wrist guards on when you miss a trick, fall awkwardly and *don't* break your wrist, or can just slide down the bowl on your kneepads, get right back up, and try your trick again. Get comfortable, then commit when you feel ready. It's a great sport!

    • @lostinlatheseries
      @lostinlatheseries Před 2 lety +1

Totally! This is something I dont get about skating culture.. Posing is actually a detrimental part of the learning process.. when babies/toddlers are learning their first steps on how to eat and walk and do their first human things.. they 'mimic' their parents or their environment.. or 'pose' like them to get into the habit of that learning.. so i find it odd that people have come up with a word like 'poser', we are all posers when we are learning anything.. its how we try to get accustomed to learning any skill! We have to mimic.. by giving it a go.... or pose into the assumed position of doing the movement.. I mean everyone's got to create some blueprint of the movement in their mind and try that out to see if it works for them or not.. and for that reason i actually think posing is a great skill not to be underrated! So keep posing until you become a really good skater! 🤣

My best tip is after you get comfortable riding, spend some time just jumping on and off your board. It helps build confidence that if things go pear shaped, you can safely jump off your board. Also, I recommend going straight to concrete to learn tricks instead of grass and just but a brick in the middle between the wheels. This way, the board rolls a bit so you get the feel for that movement but if things go wrong it won’t completely slip out from under you. Once you get comfortable then just remove the brick. This really helped with the first tip of jumping on and off the board.

Surprised this isn’t a top tip! If you push with your front foot (known as mongo), it is more difficult to set up for tricks and can also throw off your balance. Always push with your back foot! If you are in the habit of pushing mongo (I was for years), spend a full day just pushing around or down the street with your back foot. It’ll switch the habit and set you up to be a more balanced and responsive skater.
Sub tip for more advanced: Spending a day pushing and riding down the street switch is a great way to build comfort for riding both switch and fakie

I just bought my first board 5 days ago for my 45th birthday!! I cycle and roller skate (quads) but I find that skateboarding is a bit more challenging. I’m excited to learn and progress and get through the “growing pains” that come with learning something new. The only issue I have encountered thus far is that I can’t seem to find safety gear locally. (Hmmm you sell skateboards but no safety gear 😕) I should add that I currently live abroad and it’s slim pickings. I went online but the order will take a few weeks so in the meantime I tightened the wheels so they don’t roll as freely and I do grass drills. Otherwise I’m enjoying it and having a great time...Your videos are awesome!!

Great advice. My top tips....Don't be a poser. Don't hate others for what they ride or look like. Also one thing i've noticed about new generation skaters is that they go straight to tricks and forget about cruising. Cruising on your board is essential for building style, balance and confidence. Rolling around is going to give you so much more stability in the future than just doing stationary ollie bails endlessly.

Getting back in in my mid 30s I’m realizing how much more important it is to stretch, warm up slowly before going big, and focus on “proper” form or posture or whatever as you practice. I wonder how much not doing this when I was younger slowed me down and contributed to my injuries like the acl which took me out. Main advice is don’t compare yourself to other skaters and just have fun wherever you’re rat.

For example, I just learned how to ollie up curbs two days ago (landed like two of them). Yesterday I did 50 ollies up curbs. Next I’ll do them up boxes or 2-stairs, but I’ll give it until I can ollie up curbs in my sleep. The level of confidence that comes from practice is kind of unstoppable 🤘

I broke a tiny bone in my hand a week ago (If not probably healed it's possible i could get a bad handicap in my hand), and I now feel very held back and cant commit to anything. This is so true! People have such a strong tendency to over-evaluate how easy it will be to land a trick they've only landed a couple of times in a high pressure situation. It actually gets a lot harder! and the goal is to get a lot of clips/makes, not try over and over to get lucky like maybe once or twice for the whole day 👊

one thing that works for me quite well to get the last bit commitment out of me is: dont get too much into the attitude "ill form the trick and then we will see what happens." just really ... imagine you landing the trick and riding off. get comfortable with the feeling of landing on your board.
Also: if you do land on your board but its sketchy, dont let it go away from you. its much more rewarding to land a trick sketch and clean it up afterwards than going for the smooth landing right away without the feeling of having it done already.

Back when I first started to learn kickflip I've been doing it incorrectly resulting in hitting my tibia over and over again making it hurt like a hell and I could barelly walk home after evening of practice (happened multiple times), but eventually I could land a kickflip even without proper technique. Then one of my friends told me the proper way to flick my leg and since then it was absolutely easy to do a kickflip and I was able to learn and land double or triple kickflips.

My favorite skate shoes currently in production are Nike SB, but my friends have had a lot of success with all of the other major skate shoe brands (for example: Vans, Etnies, DC, eS, and Converse).
The main idea is that you don't want to skate with shoes that are made for other activities (running shoes, weightlifting shoes, tennis shoes, etc.) and obviously stay away from any other unsuitable variations like boots, sandals, and flip flops.

My tips as an old guy trying to learn skateboarding. I started at 41 yo. I skated when I was 16, just cruising. So I knew how to ride but I knew NO tricks, nothing. I started with a specific goal: To learn how to ollie and be able to ride in the street ollieing over curbs and stuff...I am 43 yo now, 2 years down the line. I don't practice that often cos I am a professional and a family man, but I do when I can. I have done my first "line" involving 3 consecutive ollie and 1 no-comply and 2 reverts a week ago.... I had a few falls in the process the last few years and it hurts a lot as I am old. So my tips are: 1.Protection: Wrist guards and Knee pads, maybe also helmet. Gave me the confidence to fall knowing that it won't hurt me. I NEVER ride without my wrist guards. 2. Space: Ollie is tricky and you need space to practice at speed. That goes for every trick eventually. I found a good square of asphalt in my area in the middle of a local park, it helped massively. 3. Goal: I wanted to learn ollie. I didn't care if it will take me 2 weeks or 3 years..I was trying my best given the time I have to practice and my life demands and achieved the goal. When I ollie I feel like Rodney Mullen. Keep your goals clear and just practice. 4. Self confidence: I see skate videos every day, tricks tutorials etc. EVERY single one of them skaters is better than me. The other day in the park I saw a little boy trying some shuvits and he also couldn't ollie....It' so funny but I admit thinking "Ha, I am better than him... :) " ...Skateboarding is NOT a completion. Know your limits and then there will be no limits...You are only competing to your yesterdays self...Relax and have fun.

A good tip for new skaters or advanced skaters looking for boards that don't break easily, try carbon fiber decks, they last longer weigh a bit less pop is way better and best of all they can take hits like no other deck, a carbon fiber deck is a wooden deck with the middle ply being replaced by a layer of carbon fiber which is a lightweight metal.
