There’s good reasons I never make a scabbard that doesn’t perfectly fit the blade it’s meant for. The carving has to be precise to prevent this.
Fun fact: If the sword just slides out of the scabbard like that, it's not a well tailored scabbard.
My thoughts exactly
was gonna say this too. thank you.
a proper katana won't slide off the scabbard even if it's turned towards the floor/ground.
Lmao that's what I thought as well, but maybe because the katana is merely a replica and not made for an actual fight, that's probably why it's not as good as the real deal. Still though, it's pretty dangerous.

The blade should not slide out. Part of the function of the Habaki is to keep the blade snug. Often katana users will have to pop the sword out by pushing their thumb on the Tsuba. If your sword is sliding out it wasn’t made correctly
Exactly what I was thinking. They made it seem as if tipping the handle downwards slightly will make the whole thing slide out. Only case I see something like what happens in the video other than bad manufacturing/wear and tear, is they never actually fully put it back in.
Exactly "sliding out" = bad manufacturing 😎😎😎
even authentic katana can have loose fits, it all depends on the wear on the fittings. sayas are wood so they obviously get worn down by metal habaki, and katana aren't meant to be super snug that in itself is bad manufacturing
@@shittyboyslover44It's not meant to be hard to draw, but it shouldn't rattle and fall out easily either. It has to have enough contact that you can feel the Habaki contact the Saya, and also not have it bounce as you walk. If you want to secure your sword, the lace on tge Saya could be used to tie the sword down, to prevent it fallibg out when pointed down wards, running without your hands free to keep the sword in place.
I was about to say this very thing👍
This applies not only for katanas, but any sharp objects that slips out of your hand, like scissors and knives.
So that’s why they hold katanas in Demon Slayer like this
They dont and it shouldnt slide by itself. With a real katana, you kinda have to use your thumb for sliding it out firts cause its kinda hard

Katana should require both hands to unsheath. The throat of the saya should grip the habaki tight enough that you can't pull it free with just the drawing hand - it should require pressure from your thumb against the tsuba to free it.
Im very cautious with knives ever since grabbing a sword like that. It was a longsword and not a katana, sliced myself to the bone. Ever since that day, every time I drop a knife or any other blade I jump out of the way and let it fall. Better to damage a blade than to damage yourself

There are other comments similar to this one, but I can't resist, so I'll just say it.
First of all, a Katana is usually held in its sheath by a part called a habaki, so it will not fall out by itself even if you turn it upside down. However, it is correct to keep your thumb on the sword guard. It depends on the school of swordsmanship.
Also, the flashy, colorful swords and sword arrangements shown in the video would have little artistic value as swords in Japan.
A Katana smith I know says that it is impossible to make colored Katanas in the first place, and it is common knowledge among those who work with Katanas.
Katanas are not made by simply pouring iron into a vessel, but are made through a variety of processes and with the skill of a master craftsman.
Some people even say that a Katana is not a Katana at all, but a lump of iron in the shape of a Katana, because it is colored in such a way that it looks as if it is not forged as a Katana should be, and the ripples and the skin of the Katana are subtle.
Of course, there are those who prefer the stylish appearance of such a sword without tradition or the original power of the sword, and I am not saying that it is bad, but when buying a sword, please be aware of this and many other things to consider.
If you want a real, good Katana, it is best to choose one in Japan, preferably with someone who knows about it.

Real handmade katanas from japan dont slide out. If its slides out its poorly made sheath/fit. It should require some force to pull out. Youre supposed use one to hand pull the blade and thumb on the other hand to push the tsuba. If your blade slides out. Itll be terrible for horseback riding. Your blade just falling out or flying in and out of the sheath like crazy. 200 dollar katanas are just for display. Actual blades costs thousands.

Actually is really rare that you cut yourself but holding a katana by the blade
But holding your katana upside down disables the ability to strike from the sheath, unless you hate your left arm. Holding the katana with the blade in the sheath pointing towards the ground allows an attack on unsheathing. Attack second, a samurai isn't always going to have his blade drawn when battle starts
A good well made katana does not slide out on its own.
Another rule: a falling knife (or sword in this case) has no handle. Let it fall then pick it up.
Or hold on the handle
Or grab the blade from the sides

@@shrimp7800 So much this. There's something really wrong if the sword just slides out of the scabbard like that.
@@Tuulos for most katanas, the habaki creates a little bit of tension that helps the blade stay secured inside the saya, but katanas are heavy, and it's not enough tension to fully lock it in place when it is upside down. High-quality katanas have a proper vacuum seal around the hibaki (small brass piece right above the tsuba [handguard]) that prevents it from slipping out. The sword should have a snug and firm fit inside the scabbard that can only be pulled out.
I'm glad to say, after buying the Obsidian Katana, there is a good seal that holds the sword in pretty snug.
Yeah I made a similar comment before reading yours thanks for saying the brass pieces name I couldn't remember it

Bloodless fingers floating around is an interesting aspect of this feature.
The blade is not ment to slide out of

Properly made katana should have a retention, caled "seal". There are even different techniques of breaking a seal. If your katanas slide out so easily, than they are not properly made
Exactly, you can use the thumb to push on the tsuba to pop the seal. Not to just prevent it from sliding out. As you said, a properly fitted sword will never “fall out”
Thank you, this was the reply I was looking for. So many people here are just consuming this nonsense, any authentic katana will have this feature. Saying the sword will just, "slip out" is pure madness, the thumb on the tsuba is also essential for drawing the sword in a swift motion
If you want form fitting, then you'll have to pay more for a custom. you're paying for mass-produced the shelf parts. Was thinking of wrapping the cling film around the blade and spray mould release, then pour silicone into the saya. Slip the blade in and let it set. But I don't know how the silicone would react with the carbon steel.
@@stevenstocker9873 Even cheap mass-produced katanas have a seal unless they are utter garbage. I have a $30 one that was the first in my collection, and it will not just fall out of the sheath unless it was not put back in properly in the first place.
