War Spoils To War Assets | Ukraine Turns Captured Russian T-62 Tanks Into Armoured Recovery Vehicles

  • According to reports on social media, Ukrainians have been converting captured Russian tanks into armored engineering vehicles (ARVs). At least two T-62s have undergone such conversion. Experts believe that Ukrainians recognize the greater value of T-62-based recovery vehicles compared to T-62 tanks. As a larger battle of heavy weaponry like tanks is anticipated, having more ARVs would be beneficial for Ukraine, which entered the current war with too few.

@@Cpt.BEARDless Ukraine is the one coping. I'm half Russian and half Ukrainian but not a Russian or Ukrainian citizen. Who told you Russia was looking for a quick victory? Show me Putin or any other Russian official who said that. There was never any such a statement. This is what the West said to try and make Russia look bad. But it failed. Just as all the sanctions failed. Russian economy grew instead of collapsing as Biden and his cronies predicted. They were all wrong. Even the Western press admits this. For such a big war Russia has achieved a lot. It's now controlling 110,000 square kilometers of former Ukrainian territory including cities of Mariuple, Melitopol, Svetlodarsk, Svyatogorsk, Severodonetsk, Lysichansk, Popasnya, Mariinka, Solidar, Krasnaya Gora, Klescheevka, Pereskopeevka, Opytnoe, plus hundreds of villages and settlements. Bakhmut is surrounded and about to fall. You dny it? The western press is lying to everyone about the war. They keep saying Ukraine is winning. Where is this evident? They will soon lose Liman, Izum, Kharkov and Herson too. It's only a matter of time. Russia is not in a hurry. They don't need to advance. For what? People like you don't understand. The goal is not to just grab land. The goal is to destroy Ukrainian military. And Ukrainians are dumb enough to keep bringing troops and equipment TO the Russians for the kill. Great. Russia doesn't need to waste soldiers and equipment resources moving. Ukrainians bring themselves in for slaughter. Get it now?

You're damn right that a T-62 would be a good Combat Engineering Vehicle! We used to have CEVs except ours was on an M-60 chassis. The gun was changed out for a 165 mm gun for bunker busting and it was great literally watching rounds go down range! Pair them up with a mine plow, a crane, and MCLICs and they make combat engineering so much easier. And put Bradley's for Engineer troopers, they'll be great! Even M113A3s would be fine. CEVs are vital to ANY Armor/Mechanized unit. Engineers! We Clear The Way!

It was recovered and put back into service the next day..what's amazing is the recovery vehicle was used to bring it to safety..the lads had to try and connect up the vehicles under intense fire and get this..one guy tagged along and was on the recovery vehicle with a GPMG putting down a hail of machine gun fire to try and give the recovery crew some cover..mad lads!! There are at least two other ways in which these captured vehicles could be repurposed.
    1. Equip the T-62 with modern optics and fire control systems or a modern turret. Just to give you an example, the Belgian company "Cockerill" offers a state-of-the-art turret for the German Leopard I, which will eventually arrive in Ukraine. Technically, it would be quite a challenge to install a Western turret into a Russian chassis, but... who knows? Sometimes, engineers can work miracles.
    2. Turn the tank into an assault gun. This is a type of tracked vehicle developed by the German army before WWII, when they didn't know whether to concentrate all their tanks in tank divisions or scatter them among infantry divisions in order to increase their mobility and firepower. In the end, they figured out that they could do both things, if they equipped their infantry divisions with a less sophisticated tracked vehicle which didn't mount its gun in a turret, but was simply placed within an enclosed and armored structure attached to the chassis. This vehicle became known as the Sturmgeschutz, and it was very effective not only in supporting the infantry, but also, in engaging enemy tanks. The Sturmgeschutz had a lower profile than a regular tank, meaning it was perfect for conducting ambushes, and since it didn't have a complex and expensive turret, it was cheaper and took less time to build than a tank

Well - why the effort. Something like a StuG wouldn't work these days anymore, there's nothing turretless around for a reason (the swedish S-Tank being the one exeption).
It would make sense somehow to just bolt towed heavy artillery pieces like zhe M777 on the chassis to make them mobile, as kind of an improvised SPG. They stay in the background anyway so no additonal armour needed. That's what i would do with Leopard 1 Chassis too.

The BREM-1 is based on a modified T-72A main battle tank chassis. The turret has been removed and new superstructure fitted. It is fitted with a front-mounted dozer blade, crane, winch and other specialized equipment. This ARV is operated by a crew of three, including commander, driver and handler.
The BREM-1 is fitted with a 4.4 m crane. It has a 19 t capacity at 2 m and 3 t capacity at 4.4 m. It is used to lift damaged or stuck vehicles. Also the crane can be used to lift vehicle for access and repair. It is worth noting that cranes of modern Western ARVs can lift much more. Vehicle can move over level ground with the 3 000 kg of load lifted. However suspension is locked automatically once the load exceeds 3 000 kg. In traveling order the crane folds along the hull.
The main winch has 25 t capacity, that can be increased to 100 t using snatch blocks. The cable is 200 m long. It can be also used for self-recovery. There is also a 530 kg capacity auxiliary winch with 425 m of cable.
This military vehicle also has rigid or non-rigid towing equipment for towing damaged, faulty or uncontrolled tanks. Over prolonged periods the BREM-1 can tow loads with a maximum weight of 50 t. When towing a tank the road range without refueling is reduced to 220 km. Average speed when towing a tank on earth road is 12 km/h.
There is also a 3.1 m wide bulldozer blade. It is used for excavation, rubble clearing operations, covering up ditches. The dozer blade is used as an earth anchor during recovery operations. The BREM-1 can prepare a firing position for the tank in 12-20 minutes, depending on the soil type.
Vehicle is fitted with welding equipment. Also it carries various tools for tank repair and servicing. There is a 1.7 m long and 1.4 m wide cargo platform. It can carry loads up to 1 500 kg. It is used for transportation of spare parts and materials necessary for repairs.
It seems that hull of this ARV has the same level of protection as T-72 main battle tank. Vehicle is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems. There is a 12.7-mm machine gun with 840 rounds of ammunition for self-defense.
Vehicle is powered by a V-46 multi-fuel diesel engine, developing 780 hp. With preparation it fords water obstacles up to 5 m deep.
Some countries, such as Poland and Slovakia developed and use their own ARVs on the T-72 tank chassis.

I'm just saying, they could also think about installing BMP-3-like turrets on the way heavier t-62 chassis, or even the t-54/55 chassis they might have in storage, so they could make relatively cheap heavy IFVs, kinda like the BTR-T project which hasn't been completed due to lack of funding...
With that being said, ARVs are absolutely vital in modern warfare.

If the tanks need recovery vehicles all the time,
one should think, if the usage of the battle tanks actually was usefull from the beginning.
Better put some additional armour on with a huge bulldozer blade, and use it as armoured transport with trailer.
