  • YES THE VIDEO IS LONG. I HAVE NO CHILL I’M SORRY. But I hope you enjoy my recommendations for some great LGBTQIA+ content out there! And please let me know your own recommendations! Also, I know this video is coming out at a time when a lot of viewers and creators are really angry with CZcams and the fact that restricted mode seems to block specifically LGBTQ+ content more harshly than other content. I’m furious about it. In fact, it makes me want to speak out even more. If you have videos you want me to about queer subjects or issues, request those in the comments as well.
I am looking definitely for some more trans voices to pay attention to, and I am trying to find some intersex CZcamsrs because I am woefully ill-informed and I want to learn more. Please give me channel recommendations!!

Okay :) (thanks so much for responding lol) I really recommend 2 in particular, the first is welcome to night vale which is about a weird little town and it features several canon LGBT+ characters, as well as just being a really cool show. The second is Alice isn't dead which just started it's second season, the narrator is a lesbian truck driver who's traveling across the country searching for her "dead" wife and a whole mystery unfolds. Both have sort of an eerie tone and are just really entertaining so I thought you might enjoy them! :)

I listened to Night Vale for years! It used to be one of my all-time favorite things. Along the way I stopped listening, but I really wanted to buy the scripted books so I can keep reading along and keeping up with the story. And I've heard a lot of good stuff about Alice Isn't Dead! I'll have to look into it!

You NEED to watch San Junipero if you haven't already!! It's s3 e4 of Black Mirror (it's not connected to any of the other episodes so you can watch it on it's own). It's a scifi story with an interracial relationship between two women and it has the best 80s vibe to it and completely defies the "no happy endings for queer women" -trend, especially in a show where literally none of the other episodes end happily. I just recommend this to anyone who will listen because it's so good :D Also happy birthday!

I want to watch this so badly! I've been hearing about it basically since the episode first went up and I have loved other episodes of Black Mirror that I've seen, so I can't believe I haven't gotten to it yet!

I'm sure someone has brought this up already but the remake of One Day at a Time on Netflix has a great coming out story line of a teenage girl. Definitely recommend it! The whole show covers a lot of issues and is really funny and amazing.

For TV shows, I highly recommend Supergirl! I myself skipped most of the first season tbh because I just wasn't that into it, but I started following season 2 and it's amazing and Alex's story is so so good! Another show I would recommend is Lucifer, it does feature a woman and a man both having relationships with both men and women, and while that is not a big focus of the show, it's still wonderful and I love it.

I don't know if you're an anime fan or not (if not, that's totally fine), but my recommendation to you is "Yuri on Ice." It's so good.
The story is thatYuri Katsuki is young, up-and-coming Olympic figure skater who decided to retire after a string of recent losses and returns home to Japan. One day, while skating at a rink owned by a friend, his routine is recorded and uploaded online. This video catches the attention of champion Russian figure skater (and Yuri's idol) Viktor Nikiforov who (actually...on a whim pretty much) flies of to Japan and decides he's gonna coach Yuri. From there, the show is about Yuri and Viktor training and competing as well as their developing relationship.
What I like about it is that it's not a "love at first sight" tropey kind of story. It starts off with Yuri really idolizing and looking up to Viktor and having this crush on him, but their actual relationship develops slowly and at a very real pace. Another thing I like about the show is that it really downplays the romantic aspect. It doesn't draw focus to the relationship or make it the main aspect of the show, kind of like the show's saying, "this is a normal thing, there's no need to draw focus to it. It's a regular part of every day life."
My big critique is that when characters are performing their skating routines, the animation kind of suffers. But the story is great, the performances are great (I listen to the English dub). It's just really great, and also kind of adorable.

For TV shows id have to recommend Orphan Black... One of the clones is a lesbian and another one is transgender. As well the brother of one of the clones is gay and has various partners throughout the series. The end of the last season left on a bit of a cliffhanger between the relationship with the lesbian clone and her partner. Death plays a part in a way but it turns out that its not what it seems! Also Hannibal the TV show, because there is both a lesbian and bisexual character, the relationship only develops in the last season but if you can stomach the violence within the show their relationship is adorable!!!

    • @ProblemsofaBookNerd

I have seen the first couple of seasons of Orphan Black! I loved the first season, but I dropped off of watching once season 3 started I think. It just wasn't a show that I was excited about anymore. But Felix and Cosima remain a couple of my favorite characters ever, and they're 100% the reasons I kept trying to watch it even after I started to lose interest. But I've been keeping up with some of the storylines via tumblr because I still love some of the characters so much!

In Broad City one of the main characters is bisexual, it's also a ton of fun and about two best friends.
Also Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is one of my favorite tv shows and one of the side characters is a lesbian doctor and the main character is a total badass.

Your inclusion of music and music videos made me think of two really important things: 1) the video for "get out" by frightened rabbit is a love story between two teen girls. There is a lot of emotional dancing. It's wonderful. The song itself has no obvious queer themes though (since its a dude singing about a woman), but I still like that they applied it to a wlw story anyway. AND NOW, 2) SOME MUSIC THAT DEF HAS LOTS OF QUEER THEMES: perfume genius makes excellent songs and interesting music vids. It's also really fascinating to see his artistic and emotional evolution over the course of 4 albums. The first is album was recorded at his house I think? So it sounds very fragile and intimate, but also a amateuristic at times (although that has its own charm). The second album is still mostly sad, heartwrenching piano songs with dark themes (but the production values are better). Then, the third album, too bright, is much more experimental and a very inspiring kind of angry (check out Queen, which also has a great video). His most recent album, no shape, is much more hopeful and self-affirming (i especially recommend wreath, slip away and Alan). Sorry for the lateness of this comment! I only watched this video a little while ago. If i start listing shows or movies this comment will turn into a novella (and even then I probably forget some important ones since i do not have my dvd collection with me) so that will have to wait. Maybe if you ever do a follow-up video.. :)

Highly recommend The Fosters on freeform (season 1 thru 5 on Netflix) it features two moms raising children from foster system. This show is amazingly diverse and discusses so many issues. Bonus, later in the series there are trans characters played by trans actors. Sexuality is also explored with adults and the teens in the show.

For movies I would highly recommend Pride. It's a dramedy based on a true story. The synopsis doesn't do the movie justice so I would suggest watching it even if the plot summary doesn't sound like something you would be interested. I also highly recommend Holding the Man. It's also based on a true story but warning that it is very sad.
As for CZcamsrs I absolutely love Dodie Clark. She is a bisexual musician and although her content is mainly based around her music, I would highly suggest subscribing as her songs are incredible.

i'd really recommend The OA if you haven't seen it. it's a netflix original show and there's a trans boy in it that's played by a real trans 14 year old and he's adorable and amazing. the trans storyline doesn't play a huge part but it is discussed and there is only one season so far so i have a feeling they'll go deeper into it in future seasons. aside from that the plot is crazy and very very entertaining. very easy to binge. also happy birthday!

Black Sails is a Show I reeeeeaaaally love! Its like a Prequel for Treasure Island mixed with Characters from this Story and People that have actually existed. We have a gay Main Character, another disabled Main Character and the three Main Ladies are kind of in a Love-Triangle. Its about Pirates and could have easily be a testosterone feast and I am so glad it isnt!
Also Call the Midwife (a historical Series about a Group of Midwifes in London in the Sixties) has for example (apart from the awesome mainly female Cast and the beautiful Costumes) a happy, healthy Relationship of queer Ladies, Characters with Addiction Issues, Characters with physical and/or mental Disabilities, positive Portrayal of Sex Workers, while still focusing on the Issues they face, a balanced View of Religion that shows it to be both comfort and a burden at times, mentions of historical events and medical breakthroughs and Storylines that touch on topics like Abortion, Racism, Homophobia, Misogyny, Adoption, Infertility, Disability, Prostitution etc etc etc

I'd totally recommend the new netflix reboot of One Day at a Time, it has a young latina lesbian character who's super vocal about her social views and I ADORE her. I'm so happy that I'm not alone in finding a show that helped me to accept who I was and come out to the people who mean the most to me in my life. I know that Pretty Little Liars isn't a perfect show by any means, but I will forever be grateful to Emily Fields for being a character who helped me to figure out who I am.
Also, I didn't know that there was a Carmilla series. I totally have to watch that! I read the book for an English class and absolutely adored it. Thank you for posting this video. So many wonderful recommendations that I totally have to check out.

So I saw recommendations for Orphan Black and D.E.B.S., but I totally recommend those. Debs especially is one of my favourite lesbian movies seeing as it's a little bit campy and there is a happy ending. I also would say Paris Is Burning because I feel like it is essential watching for anyone who is part of the community. It's a fantastic documentary and also an amazing character study.
Also, this one is gay males, but Were The World Mine is really good. It's a gay movie musical based on A Midsummers Night Dream and all the lyrics in the songs are made up of lines from the play.

AHHH I'm going to write this bit by bit while I watch this, but I love watching gay media. I'm straight, but I feel like you get a lot more out of gay coming of age or gay love stories than you do out of straight ones (personal opinions!) So I'm going to recommend some stuff for you :) A lot of this will be male male because it's just something I've seen more of, but there are some ladies for you too!
    Movies-
Lost And Delirious - f/f from what I remember of it it's a great movie
Kissing Jessica Stein - another f/f/, can't remember much about it but worth a look
Boys (Jongens) - m/m FAVE FILM EVER so cute, it's Dutch with subtitles but I love everything about it. The cinematography is beautiful and the story is simple but lovely
Shelter - m/m another fave, about a guy falling for his best friends brother, but the relationship with him and his nephew is super adorable and I love the soundtrack (Shane Mack - check him out!)
Summer Storm (Sommersturm) - m/m a German film light hearted and comedic with a team of rowers who go to a competition and one of the other teams are all gay
North Sea Texas (Noordzee, Texas) - m/m from Belgium, another really great coming of age story, with a lot of family life thrown in
I honestly could recommend so much more but I'll leave you with that!
    TV Shows-
Please Like Me - An Australian show with a gay main character (the actor / writer kind of plays himself, keeps his own name and his best friend is played by his best friend in real life with the same name as the show) This is a great drama / comedy - it's sort of a love or hate show because there is a really specific kind of humour, but it also deals a lot with mental illness. You should definitely check it out!
Skam - I'm sure you've heard of this, but it's a Norwegian show where each season follows a different main character, season 3 deals with coming out, and has love interest who is either bisexual or pansexual who also deals with a mental illness
Queer As Folk - gay and lesbian relationships, I'm sure this is another you have heard of!
The Fosters - I kind of fell off The Fosters but the first few seasons are really good. Follows a f/f led household, with a gay storyline for one of the children, and has a trans side character played by a trans actor
Sugar Rush - It's been years since I watch it but it's a British tv show with the main character falling in love with her best friend and coming out
    Music videos-
Troye Sivan - all of his videos have a gay element, The Blue Neighbourhood trilogy is a storyline that continues through three songs (Wild / Fools / Talk Me Down) and Heaven the song is about him being religious and what that means in terms of him being gay ('Without changing a part of me, how do I get to heaven?') the video features him and his boyfriend, and a lot of clips of other queer people / events
Will Young - has a few videos featuring gay elements, but I would definitely recommend Brave Man which features a trans man and it's just really poignant and important
I'm sorry that this is so long!! I'm going to make some videos about books / shows / films in a few months for Pride month :)

A question popped into my mind: What would be better, in your opinion, if we have more real, well-done documentaries about LGBTQ+ people or more movies/tv-show (both realistic and in fantasy/sci-fi genre) with LGBTQ+ characters?

    • @KingaZajacNNR
      @KingaZajacNNR Před 7 lety +1

Yes, I think that too. Documentaries don't do that good commercially, don't reach a bread audience. Movies can do it better. Tho, Tv-shows have much more time (obviously) to develop characters and show them in all surroundings, situations, playing different role. I'm really skeptical towards the movies, because if they are telling LGBTQ+ stories it's always sad, with bad ending or kind of good ending, but before it the main character came through hell. I think we'll sooner see well-done tv-shows with main LGBTQ+ character, because big studios are afraid this kind of movie will not sell.
It's so good to see more and more great books covering this (truthful, but not all sad), like "History..." or Becky Arbertalli's books and I hope that "trend" will spread out to different media.

What about the movie Bound? It's about a woman who longs to escape her mafia boyfriend, kindles a romance with a woman and together they try to swindle and protect each other from the mafioso types chasing them. I found them to be a very believable couple with a lot of passion. I don't know how problematic the portrayal was, but I honestly really liked the lesbian daughter from The First Wives Club (I forgot her name, it's been ages since I watched it.) I know she wasn't a main character or anything, but I just liked how it really was about sisterhood and empowering each other to "stick it to the man." Literally lol.
Oh mate, Willow and Tara are my ultimate OTP and I'm straight! Wasn't a huge fan of Kennedy but Tara I thought was simply adorable. Apart from Willow, she was my favorite character. I mean I like Buffy don't get me wrong, but she wasn't always the most nuanced character. The episode that featured her controlling and abusive family although extremely cheesy even for a Buffy episode ,is just one of my favorites. It always makes me really happy during the scene when the entire scooby gang stand up to the family and accept her into theirs.
Also, can you explain why you don't like CIS gendered people playing transgendered characters? I get that it's really awesome to see a trans character played by a trans person, and I fully support such instances openly. But they're an actor, not representing themselves. Even method actors aren't that genuinely in character. Hell I support trans people playing CIS gendered people. It's just acting at the end of the day.
Rocking shirt, by the way. And happy birthday!

Yeees i love Imagine Me and You and Brokeback Mountain and so many other things you mentioned 😍
    I would recommend you:
Movies: Boy meets Girl (another one explained it already in the comments)
Soldier's Girl (it's definitely good but also disturbing sometimes, so if someone is sensitive i wouldn't recommend it especially the ending 😬)
Life Partners ( it's about two best friend and one of them is a lesbian, it's rather a side thing but it's a good movie 😊)
Jenny's Wedding (She had a girlfriend for a long time and she wants to marry her but she still hasn't come out to her family yet)
Blue is the warmest colour( it's veeeery long and probably not interesting for anybody but you can try 😂)
Series: Glee (the lesbian couple Santana and Britanny and gay couple Kurt and Blaine😍😍😍 also the music and story is really good)
Orange is the new Black (duh! 😍😂)
Greys's Anatomy (the lesbian couple Callie and Arizona)
Music videos: Sick of losing soulmates by Dodie Clark
LP has some lady loves lady videos 😊
    CZcamsr:
Dodie (bisexual and reaaally cute 😍)
Rose and Rosie (cute married couple, Rose is a lesbian and Rosie is bisexual, super funny and they have 2 channels)
Nowthisisliving (Her real name is shannon and she is a lesbian and i like her a looot)
Sooo i probably have more but i can't think of more now sooo hope you enjoy and by the way great video 😊😊😘😘

I have definitely seen OITNB. It was a favorite for a while but the newest season did the thing I said I couldn't really forgive a show for which has made me incredibly angry at the show overall. I just have sort of an angry and complicated relationship with OITNB right now and a new season would have to be one of the most incredible seasons of television in order to make me start watching it again.
But I have been following the Supergirl storyline along since it started! I don't watch the show, but I think Alex's storyline has been done SO WELL.

I think it's unfair to say all shows that kill off gay characters are bad. Sometimes characters die, it's not necessarily to do with them being lgbt+ (the 100 is a perfect example). Sometimes characters have to die for the plot.

Check out s7 of "Once Upon a Time" it's a soft reboot. And 2 of the characters have a lesbian love story that's treated just as a love story. And they have these 2 separate story arcs that have nothing to do with lobs that they wind up helping each other with. And its is cannon. They are dating for a while[its not clear how long bc of other stuff going on in the plot. The show is bad at timelines.] And im not gonna spoil what happens. But we see them being treated as just another couple in a world where true love can solve ALMOST anything.
