    Logic Pro is an industry standard DAW. But GarageBand does many of the same things for free. This begs the question; Logic Pro vs GarageBand: Is it Worth the Money?
    This week, I’m diving deep into the differences between these two programs. By the end of the video, you’ll know exactly which program is right for you and whether or not that $200 price tag is worth it.
    If you want to support Just Write Music, all you have to do is watch the video all the way to the end. Throw in a like or a comment and you’re my new best friend :)
    Thanks so much for being here. It’s good to be back and making useful content for you guys.

    Fine description of the differences. As I noted in a comment on another of your videos, I graduated from Garage Band to Logic Pro because there were some things I couldn't do in Garage Band. (It's been several years, so my memory could be failing me, but I believe it had to do with either music notation or changes in tempo and time signatures within a piece.

    I run GB in my iPad Pro and love it. In fact, I was told that many hits we hear on the radio or online were created with the iOS version of GB. It sounds that good without the major complications of Logic Pro.

      @JustWriteMusic  Před 3 lety +24

      That's great! It's a fantastic option. There for sure are hits out there made with GarageBand on iOS, but that's also a little misleading to say, because anything backed by a major label will be mixed and mastered by top-level professionals. That being said, we can use GarageBand to get 80% of the way there, which is absolutely incredible!
      I've been asked to do some GarageBand for iOS tutorials in the past. Is that something you'd also be interested in?

      @@JustWriteMusic Sure, but it also depends on the type of music you are producing. If it's something that is heavily produced (like a lot of pop, r'n'b,hip hop etc.) then of course something more 'tune-able' than GB is better and will be necessary, but if you want a more acoustic/rock/indie vibe or an 'honest' true to life recording with an authentic sound, then GB can really be enough!

    I really like the approach of this- from the perspective of someone relatively new to recording and may not want to be a professional engineer or producer. I just want to make decent sounding stuff as easily as possible. If something big commercially happens with my music, I’ll probably be working with folks with way more technical know how anyway. Thanks and you are my new best friend.

    Most people just buy VSTs instead of using stock sounds anyway so the question is whether garageband has the same workflow features that Logic does. How stripped down is the sequencer/piano roll compared to Logic?

  • @normapadro420

    I kept researching on loudness, and effects that certain music has. Most of the music don't have to be loud so using compressions, or bass is not going to be that useful. The loudness is controlled when the music is distributed. I tried expensive DAWs, and decided to use the ones that work well with creating. It's a good idea to learn everything you can about the DAW before you use it. Learn about the effects, and how everything sounds so that when you're ready to record things will sound right. People asked me what DAW I use, and they say oh. It's what you do with sound creations that matters, not the software.

    • @JustWriteMusic
      @JustWriteMusic  Před 2 lety +5

      You’re absolutely right. Thanks so much for your comment! I’d only disagree with you on compression - making something loud isn’t the point of compression; the input and output signal from a compressor should be the same loudness; gain is for loudness. Many compressor come with a certain amount of gain pre-added, which can cause confusion like this. Just my 2 cents. Thanks again!

    Garageband plus the free Native instruments plugins has been great for me. I used to produce music 20 years ago, the best things I did was in Reason. The limitations of not even having plugins or externql vsts made me a better musician and producer. This is a really helpful video and answered many of my questions! I am 15 and have been using GB to articulate my ideas and write some small stuff for about 2 years now but I have never really explored recording vocals, mixing, plugins etc. which is mainly because I am a massive perfectionist but is also because i feel limited as I don't have the tools that will enable me to achieve the sounds that I wan to hear. A big one for me is orchestral sounds (especially strings) as they are very influential on the kind of music I listen to and like to make. Having recently purchased a MacBook Pro of my own and being pretty set on getting logic when I can I was just wondering if you think this would be beneficial for someone like me who wants to start writing and producing hoping to eventually be able to create music mostly independently (meaning without a producer). I also want to ask if even if I got logic if I would still need to pay a lot extra in plugins and instruments etc or if I could mostly use it as is. Thank you

    • @JustWriteMusic
      @JustWriteMusic  Před rokem +3

      Thanks so much for this awesome comment! Congrats on getting into all this, and welcome!
      To answer your question, yes; to produce professional sounding orchestral tracks, you will eventually have to pick up a library of orchestral samples. Now virtual instruments that come in logic aren’t awful, but they’re by no means production quality out of the box. That being said, you can get serviceable sounds out of them, it just takes some elbow grease and know-how. I recommend diving in with the stock stuff and use them help to learn audio/MIDI and the program. Then when you’re ready to upgrade, you’ll be able to use the high quality 3rd party samples to their greatest effect. Ultimately it’s our skill as musicians composers and engineers that make it all happen, not the samples.
      Same deal with plugins, the stock stuff is great, better than the orchestra samples relatively speaking, and it’s a good idea to use the stock plugins and learn how to use them conceptually so you know what you’re doing and understand what you’re looking for when you go to buy. Hope this helps and thanks again for your comment!

      My pleasure! Thanks again for your comment and your attitude. Keep it up and you’ll do great. Just keep writing and write as much as possible! Especially for orchestal stuff. • @JustWriteMusic
      @JustWriteMusic  Před rokem

      Thanks so much for this awesome question! While I don't have experience with the Captor X, it looks like its a really specific piece of hardware; like an IR loader that's meant to be put in front of the speaker connection of an amp, which means you need an amp that's not hardwired into a speaker, like most budget combo amps.
      Ultimately, this isn't a Scarlett or GarageBand problem, those are great pieces of equipment; i'd wager you need to look at your signal chain and fix whatever issues you find there. Hope this helps!

  • @JonathanAmesPhD
    @JonathanAmesPhD Před 7 měsíci +1

    Still not sure, though thanks. I compose lyric-dependent acoustic songs, and overdub acoustic bass, sometimes dobro, and/or Weissenborn, as well as harp. Never mastered drum midi because I change tempo so frequently. I also make relaxation recordings -- all totally on audio -- midi overwhelms me (I'm 77). So I've wondered if Logic can really enhance voice quality in a way beyond "smart controls", eq, etc. Same with acoustic guitar quality -- can a stock Martin dreadnaught become a Collings? While there are guides for Logic, can't find one for mastering (in both senses) Garageband, fully utilizing what's there. Started on Tascam cassette daw; certainly miss mixing board! Thanks again!

    • @JustWriteMusic
      @JustWriteMusic  Před 7 měsíci

      I think it'd probably be worth the upgrade to Logic for your situation. Even the fact that there's more guides out there to help you get the sound you're looking for may be reason enough. GarageBand is an amazing piece of free software, and because of that, it's got limitations that can sometimes make simple things harder to do than necessary.
      For example, in GarageBand, you apparently can't change the meter/time signature mid song. Maybe it's changed since I've made this video, but that's a dealbreaker for me as a progressive player. But you can change the tempo of a song and automate it in GarageBand.
      Ultimately, if you'd like room to grow with less limitations, go for Logic. That being said, it sounds like there are still some things you have yet to discover in GarageBand, so ultimately, I'd say to just keep at it, keep learning, and eventually it'll be clear that you've outgrown GB based on what you want to do in your music. Hope this helps!

I don't want nor need all the "intangibles" that Logic Pro seem to offer. I haven't seen a concrete example in your presentation or "real life application" . Not judging your skills and you explain stuff very well, but I basically want to record good takes, copy paste the good bits, copy pan left right the mono tracks, adjust volumes and basic filters, and export to mp3 :). @@JustWriteMusic The biggest frustration for me is finding the time needed to sit down when i'm inspired. Having kids is great but it does limit the "alone creative time". What I love is when my 5YO comes with me to sing cover songs or improvise some lyrics and I put music on top of it. Not a frustration, but it would be awesome if it was easy to start a project in GB and not be attached to the BPM. I start at 100BPM and then later realize it sounds better at 75 but I haven't found how to slow it down without changing the notes. Maybe you can help haha.
      My biggest hope is to put out a song that some people like and listen to. I mostly do covers now and try to re-arrange my favorite songs in a new way. I only output on soundcloud.

    • @JustWriteMusic
      @JustWriteMusic  Před 2 lety +1

      Amazing! Thanks so much for your answers.
      Yeah that’s a tough one. Best thing you can do there is make sure you keep a writing schedule. Inspiration initiates a flow state, but we can also initiate by just sitting down to write. Even short frequent 30min sessions can be quite productive. If you can do that 3-5 times a week, you’re golden. Efficiency is important here too.
      That’s 100% doable! And you’re already doing the right thing by recontextualizing the music you live. Do more of that for sure. Be careful not to stand in your own way here. Sometimes we have to put up with and finish music we’re not in love with in order to write the music we are in love with. I call it writing “bad” music, so go write and finish some of that! Detach your expectations and enjoy the process. You’ll naturally have some songs rise to the top as your best work. This is a common method artists use to write albums you know and love. Follow their lead :)
      Hope this helps. And thanks again!

And is there anything else I can do to step up my vocs quality before they go out to post? Thanks again!

    • @JustWriteMusic
      @JustWriteMusic  Před rokem

      Thanks so much, that means a ton! Ultimately, yes I would agree with that statement. Think about it this way, the iPad with GarageBand and a computer with Logic Pro are both receiving the same signal, so the same recording should be identical, whether the focusrite is plugged into iPad right GarageBand or Mac with Logic or any other DAW.
      That being said, GarageBand may have some built in limiters working in the background (don’t know for sure, hopefully someone can chime in with that info). Things like that can effect the incoming signal.
      To avoid that, and the main tip I’d give out is to make sure you record at conservative levels; try averaging (RMS) around -18 dbFS with peaks no higher than -6 to -3dbFS. Plug-ins meant to emulate analog gear are made to have an incoming signal around -18dbfs; so if you’re engineer is mixing in that classic analog flavor, you can get a slightly more polished sound at the source that way. Learning a little about gain staging will make your engineer love you lol
      Finally, keep learning and growing as a musician and performer. Learn to “work the mic”, support your breath, and bring dynamics into your performance. I don’t doubt you’re already doing this, especially at the national level, this is more cookie cutter singing advice.
      I think that’s ask for now. Thanks again for your fabulous question and I hope this ramble helps in some way!

      Also Logic is great, comes with a ton of solid virtual instruments and stock plugins and is an industry standard for production, recording, and songwriting for a reason. If you've got the budget, it's a great move.

    $200 isn't that expensive but can the $200 software alone create actual music, like that of Japanese animation openings, not some Karaoke-like music? Doesn't one have to buy a lot of other auxiliary modules, extensions, third-party tools, etc to be able to do that? If so, how much does it actually cost to have all those things?

    • @JustWriteMusic
      @JustWriteMusic  Před rokem +1

      Amazing question! You’re right that oftentimes music producers and engineers do use third party plug-ins; however, those aren’t completely necessary. Most DAWs these days come with a suite of stock virtual instruments and plug-ins. Thing is, they’re very very usable, especially for those at or best the beginning of their journey.
      So, truly; you can release professional-sounding music with just Logic; even just GarageBand, honestly. In this case, it’s more about learning to use the tools and building your skills, as opposed to what gear you have.
      So no, you don’t need fancy plug-ins and external hardware to make pro-quality music. Those tools may make it easier to some degree, but it’s far better to learn to use the stock tools, build your skills, and slowly build your third party library based on your specific musical needs and growth. You should have a reason to buy it, and know why it’s better than the stock one, if there’s an equivalent.
      All that being said, even with the most expensive gear and the best trained engineer, our music is only as “good” (read: skilled) as we are. Audio folks like to say: “you can’t polish a turd.” This refers to both the quality of recording, which is independent of a DAW, and the quality of the musical material as it becomes a whole.
      These tools don’t create the music, we do.
      I hope that rambling rant helped in some roundabout way 😂🫡

      Yes; that’s one of those really strange limitations that is probably pushing people into pushing people into paying for Logic. However, if it’s an acoustic guitar and a sparse track, it’s not uncommon to record the guitar and voice as one track using one large diaphragm condenser mic. Otherwise, you just have to record the tracks separately, which isn’t bad thing either. actually, if you’re used to singing and playing together, this helps you understand what you’re doing with a bit more focus.

    As a power-Garageband user this comparison is a bit skewed. I never use the simple controls in GB, I always open the plugins and use them directly. GB vs PL is a personal choice. For me I don't want to waste time learning all the extra bells and whistles. I use the DAW for recording my own music and friends music. I get a great mix and sound by focusing on how things are recorded.
    I used to use Pro Tools and spent so much time learning about signal routing and solving update issues, pouring more time and money into than I needed. GB was a savior. Ultimately it's all about what you want out of it. Pro Studio owners or users looking to go pro then sure the better software is Logic Pro. If you want an easy, inexpensive way to make great music GB is the way to go.
    What are some best music produced entirely on GarageBand?
    Rihanna - “Umbrella”
    Wavves - “Wavves” and “Wavvves”

    Nine Inch Nails - “The Hand That Feeds”

      I really appreciate this comment and do intend to make an updated comparison video. I see your point from a balance perspective, and if I didn't make that distinction about personal preference, that's on me. The only place I'd push back a little is that the stock plugins that come with Logic are far better than the GarageBand equivalents; to the point where 3rd party plugins, which in themselves can get quite pricey, simply aren't needed.
      That, plus the optional simplified version of Logic, serves as a fantastic step up from GarageBand - for those who seek greater control and to learn more about audio engineering. You correctly pointed out that is a personal preference and simply won't be the right course of action for everyone.
      I couldn't agree more with essentially all of what you've said. GarageBand is a fantastic program - I actually made another video detailing why I think it's the best free daw out there, hands down.
      PRO TOOLS. Good lord, I feel for you there. I too used pro tools for a time, and it didn't suit my needs. Not to mention Avid's predatory business practices - what a nightmare. Charging subscription fees, upgrade fees, figuring out all the in's and out's of a tired interface that has barely changed so that the old timers in big studios don't have to learn to workflows. As you can tell, I have feelings about it, haha
      Thanks again for this solid comment. I'll get that updated video published soon and I'll aim for as much clarity and balance as I can muster :)
