yooooooo! such a fun vid!!! nathan, youâre the man. i had so much fun doing this. still got so much to learn but iâm excited to get started!
YESSS! Give this man some LOVE! You did great man!
Keep Up the Great!!đŻ
loved it!!!
Keep it up bro :D
You did awesome man!!! Give us young producers some hope lol
I didn't realize Garage band was so powerful
Too true man. Now I want to learn to use garage band like that!
Garageband is incredibly powerful, by far underestimated.
the presets are incredibly usable and intuitive, it lacks some features of logic, but you can definitely get good results with garageband
I've done some decent garage band recordings on my iphone with the app definitely a underrated tool
I started on GarageBand and then moved to Logic. First off, GarageBand has A LOT of stuff that I never noticed before. Super useful things I only noticed after I dug into Logic for a few years. My only complaint are issues with the grid and stuff. However, I wish I put more effort into learning GarageBand cause its freeeeeee.
The track was really remnant of the song: âattentionâ by Charlie puth
Definitely, after I read this it sounded like it lmaoo
Thatâs what I thought too!
Itâs the same chord progression and the same key. It sounds like if âAttentionâ by Charlie Puth and âEastsideâ by Benny Blanco were combined
Yeah I was looking for this comment
Itâs got the same key chord progression and a similar melody
He really has his earbuds plugged into the interface. Legend.
Is that a weird thing to do? I genuinely am asking lol
@@UserNameGenerated Not really. The point is he should use headphones. It just looks kinda silly I guess lol
@@RipCityMixes how is headphone better than earphones
@@dOVERanalyst way better frequency response
They both are cool tracks. Very different. Nate's is straight-up pop-radio ready. Dexter's sounds like it could be on an Alt-J record. Both EXCELLENT in their own way.
My favorite part is when the beginner calls hi-hat snare
Actually u are mistaken bruh đ
@@tadeogog634 My snare always opens!
I mean the hi hat is functioning as a snare
@@SamSwinnerton even if it is functioning like that in this case itâs still not a snare, I wouldnât call pan a pot even if I would use it as a pot
@@yarav153 case by case basis Iâd say. If I was creating a snare sound out of the sound of me stepping on a can, Iâd call it a snare in my project, because Iâm treating it like a snare in the mix.
"He's only been producing for a few months!"
OP-1: "cap."
i feel like some people think buying the most hyped and expensive equipment will make them gods when they start so i actually wouldnât call cap at all. Very amateur move actually
@Remy Chambless haha I've been doing it for two as well and I'm still using the FL studio 20 demo đ
@@RiZeLegiT this is true. I would kill for an op-1 tho haha
@@mitegai3027 haha same but itâs hella pricy for my taste, one day fs tho
Iâm thinking of making replicas of the op1 chassis for people to put in their videos. Imma gonna be rich!
Dexter had some beautiful ideas regarding texture and timbre; heâs got more or less an artistic concept behind it all, which brings a lot of soul
Nathan, while going for a more steady production philosophy and perhaps a little detached from it, showed however an absurdly well done mix
Cheers to both, hope to one day be a little bit like either of you
Dexter's had more soul more personality if you ask me something that is lacking in today's auto tune world even though both were definitely using it I find sometimes less is more. Dexter you did an awesome job đ love your style and way of thinking, simply amazing
I literally commented this and started scrolling down and seen this comment and wanted to say wow we think alot alike. Also wanted to say I totally agree with you as I have a hard time connecting with new music as it's to much auto tune production with the soul stolen right out of it.
Yes, this. Nathan's is super slick, but Dexter's got that soul. He's got the true talent!
Itâs pretty hard to get that production quality from GarageBand as a beginner
They should work together on a track.
Both tracks are really awesome! I also didn't know GarageBand was so powerful in the right hands.
This was amazing to watch!
I actually prefer Dexterâs version. He really captured the emotions, while Nathan created a banger, but also a version that is something you would expect.
Dexterâs version illustrates the wonderful surprise of the unexpected. His lack of experience has his mind completely open to sound. He has no expectations at all and therefore has created something quite unique. His lack of experience on this track is his friend.
Agree
i love his version
i think he don't need more drums progression.
only problem is his unedited voice
I LOVE the way you said this!
I agree that while Nathan's piece was so accurate and polished and pleasing to hear that style by itself is becoming a cliche if it maybe so called so. Though, probably Nathan's has done a great job within the industry "standards". Dexter's interpretation is beautiful and different but it needs a lot of Nathan's experience to make it sound great. Thumbs up for both and thanks for bringing this "competition" up. It is teaching a lot as well.

Love watching videos like these. Really shows that it's not about the software, it's about the person who uses it.
I liked both! One had the potential to sound like Imagine Dragons style and the other a Charlie Puth style â€ïž
Yeah I like them both too. And your totally right about both styles. Very nice tho to be honest.
The first one sound more like Woodkid I find
@@Fanat1kMusiks never heard of woodkid! If u can suggest me their best song Iâd love to listen to it!
@@AbigaleKirsten I really love "Iron" & "I love You" from Woodkid :)
Saying someone sounds like imagine dragons is the biggest insult
To be honest I liked dexterâs version better. The only thing thatâs missing was some bad ass drums. Good job Dexter, keep it coming.
Agreed
The idea is really really good to be honest
I agree! Some hard hitting drums coming out of that drop would KILL!
Bad ass drums and a little post, would have been awesome. Better then I would have done, and I've been at it since I was 9.
His voice sucked lmao
âI donât know how to quantize yetâ press Q brother đ
âI havenât learned to Google yet eitherâ
he meant quantizing audio, which you need flex for, its not piss easy actually
That's exactly what I mumbled to myself while I was leaning under the desk plugging in my phone đ
Dexterâs is more unique but unpolished. Nathan finished what he started and mixed it spot on. Nathan had time to sleep on it so had an advantage there on top of the experience..I would like to hear a collab and finish this song, or have Nathan help to finish Dexterâs version.
For me, the lesson of this video is not about whoâs better and whether experience will always prevail or not. For me the lesson is, learn to collaborate, make friends, smile through each challenge and make the best of whatâs in your head and soul. Keep a light heart, tame your ego, listen to others, appreciate diversity and learn to never stop learning. Thanks to you both, for highlighting where great music making really comes from.
Nope...as much as yountryna sound positive, that wasnt the goal of the video.
@@emmanuel.n8458 itâs still good to find other, even deeper meanings to videos sometimes, ofc the video isnât about it but still a good thought about it
Oh come onđ
Whereâs a good place to find others to collab with? Iâm a beginner and would love to find others to learn and produce with.
This comment is the greatest thing I have every seen. Thank you for that it was perfect!
it's that thing where the beginner one sounds really just great because of how interesting and different it is, but needs just little touch ups here and there. where the pro one is perfect but in the end sounds really like what it's supposed to, so it ends up a little forgettable sadly. I think it's an interesting reminder for everyone.
100% well said
I love how positive and supportive you are. I've been getting more into the mixing and producing aspect of my music lately and I love your videos and tips and have been getting a lot of ideas from your videos, especially the pro vs beginners. Thank you so much for doing what you do.
By the way, you both did awesome
I think it would be cool to see what they would come up with working together and combining their visions for the song!
Nice job! Dexterâs version sounds its all about âfeelâ having the limited experience his musicality is at the steering wheel. While our Pro here really puts out an amazing commercial production that sounds like a radio hit really well done! I think that being able to keep a balance between the 2 things I.e. musicality and craft is where we all would love to be but I also think itâs really hard to do both well.
Absolutely! I truly believe you should put what you're best at in the driver's seat. He did that well by getting creative!
"...an amazing commercial production ..." Gotta admit I read that and wondered...is that suppose to be a compliment or a criticism? lol
đ
@@AveragePicker it really depends on your target, but I get what you mean
"While our Pro here really puts out an amazing commercial production"
to be fair this wasnt a "who can make this poppy song sound original" battle...it was more of technical one of "who can make this poppy type song sound better through production" and you can even hear the pro like "you cheated you took out the chord progression" but then he stopped himself short cause he didnt want to bitch
'' he's been producing for only a few years''
beginner actually has a 1200$ OP-1
Not even years he said only a few MONTHS
I caught that. He's also using busses and stacking sounds I believe. Must be a quick learner though?
thought of this too lol
Well expensive gear aren't just for pros tho.
anyone can buy expensive gear
Dexterâs sounded great like a creative pop song with some artpop influences but still very catchy. The other song sounded like perfect bubblegum radio pop that Iâd ignore. :)
Challenge is nothing, it's the joy and enthusiasm you both share and it makes me feel happy to watch this. GREAT voice Dexter!
Dexter: All things considered, mad props to you my man! I love your vocal as well as the direction you took this challenge. You have some awesome vision, and the tools help make it shine.
Nathan: I really love what you did in GB... proving once again, a little bit of knowledge can take you a long way. I've been following you for a year or so. I can't wait to see your new "Live" formats of writing and production. You've opened up my eyes and brought me out of a dark place, where I feel everything I create sucks!
Both of you have motivated me to stop being so critical and work through the process, make some decisions and finish something! Thank you both, best Xmas present I've gotten this year!
james, thank you :) reading this made me feel really great. there were times making this track that i was really critical of myself too and was feeling very self-conscious... but getting over that hump and getting it out there is so important!
Do more of these! I donât care so much about beginner vs pro, but I love hearing different peopleâs takes on the same song! Iâm assuming everyone follow you already knows garage bands limits. Do more Challenges like this!
This video answered a burning question for me. "Is Garageband 'good enough' to develop skill and move towards making great art? The answer as demonstrated by Nathan is .. "oh yeah it is!". I didn't hear Nathan saying he felt significantly limited by Garageband for this use case. More like he worked with what was available and was able to produce something semi-pro sounding rather than something too limited to be viable. Conclusion, one's experience and skill comes first before transitioning to the ultra-professional gear. Have always appreciated Apple's generous gift of Garageband as a very capable entry point to music composition.
Dexter is really frickin smart and well spoken. Iâm very impressed with his perspectives AND his production. With a mind like that heâs gonna go far
I have to say, first off both of those were incredible!!! But also as a beginning producer, Iâm glad to see so much can be done with GarageBand. Iâm mainly using it to mess around and seeing what can be done with it really inspires me
I actually Liked dexter's Song more, the other one was for Sure more Professional produced but im Not that into pop music anyways and in dexters voice i really felt the passion.
yeah but he fucked up the drums
I looove both versions it's wild how the music can make a song feel and sound completely like a whole different song. Totally different vibes, just kudos to you both! Love your videos thank you!
Great job Dexter! Keep at it! Having spent some time on this journey myself, I'd say that what this clearly illustrates (GB vs Logic notwithstanding) is that as you develop experience with producing, one thing that changes is the depth of the production - the number of instruments/harmonic ideas and percussive elements. "Overproduced" is a real thing of course, so the other experience is how to carve out space for elements and knowing when to stop. Great video!
Guys you both have done something really cool, and I love seeing and feeling the way the way each of you manage to create a very different and unique arrangement, but I'd very much enjoy the receptive warmth way you both react to one another arrangement. Well done you both, Cheers!!
Both pretty good! I like the originality of Dexter's, the quality of Nathan's was great but the style too commercial for my liking. Good way to challenge each others ear. Good job guys!
that's fire Nathan. Love the vibe
OMG!!! Both are soooo good! can't even choose cause you both present such a different vibes! Great job Nathan and Dexter!
The beginner def needed some work but the pro made a generic radio song I've heard 1000 times lmao Liked the beginner's song much more.
Whats wrong with that?
@@emmanuel.n8458 it's generic
@@skeleton-bullfrog most things are generic man.
@Lucky starr but they're better not generic. That's all I'm saying. My reply didn't work
Yeah I noticed that too. Pro isn't necessarily a better song. It would've made a way better song if pro worked off and expanded on beginners starter song
This is a great idea Nathan! Really enjoyed both versions. Though Nathan's experience does make a difference, Dexter's love of music and talent shine their own lovely light! Bravo!!
The melody sounds really close to attention and both of them added a different colour and texture to the song â€ïž
Absolutely loved both...... Totally different directions!! Bangers both of them!!
Omg dexter is adorable and has so much enthusiasm. I love his voice, and I would like to produce a song with his vocals!
Iâm so used to hearing producers on CZcams who only make hip hop and house that hearing an actually well composed and produced pop song at the end caught me off guard, excellent production
Itâs all fire over here, good job love the vibes. Experience is key
I like both and again it is proven that creativity is king, i lost a lot time looking for sound or gear, resulting in lots of time is LOST
Thank you for the amazing video
I love that you show how important experience is over gear!
Props to Dexter for taking on this challenge and delivering this after such a short time!
Cheers,

The track sounds like it should have a huge beat drop at the end, with some gritty throaty vocals, like that would absolutely SLAP
I was waiting for that, I'm disappointed now đ
Amazing job, Dex. Great idea, Nathan.
I canât even pick a âbetterâ one! As an âamateurâ I absolutely love both and I can tell the first needs polishing but the vibe is there and the PRO is amazingly polished! (I feel like it needs to be a little more raw though! Emotion is so important) thank u guys!
Oh my gosh, Dexter has the most amazing personality! He just made me smile the whole time watching this đ Amazing job to both of you! Thank you, Dexter, for being willing to do this, and to Nathan for making a video like this đđ» Loved hearing where different minds took the song
He was awesome wasn't he?!? So great to see his personality come out! Total blast!
Pro sounds like "Attention" - Beginner sounds like Mallory Knox
This was so dope! Great songs on both sides. Nice job Dexter!
Wow that was great! keep the good vibes going
As a rookie producer myself, I thought both were Amazing for different reasons. One had a edgy almost ready to explode vibe. The other a more polished pop vibe. I got what Nathan was saying about Dexters track and taking to the next level, but seriously had huge amounts of potential and his creativity was off the chart!! Canât wait to see Dexter exploding onto the music scene đ Iâm assuming due to the talent and work Nathan did on his track heâs pretty much there and if not, he should be đ.
Well done guys, such a brilliant video!
Dexter keep learning and making it happen, great go!!
Yes yes yes!! đ„đ„đ„đ„đđđđ

Niiice! Good work, Dexter and Nathan both! Cool to see the difference in direction and production. Great content here.

As someone who is dabbling in this area, this was very interesting to me, specifically the thought process of why certain instruments were chosen once the direction of where each of you felt the song should go. Sometimes I think the difference between the pro and amateur is the confidence the pro has thru experience and practice. Well done, fellas!
just two random artists appreciating each others calibre..

I loooved this! Great job, both of yâall. Dexterâs was fun..I really liked the vibe of his. I loved the build up and beat drop of Nathanâs. Itâs crazy how different production can make a song sound like two completely different songs.

Both tracks are great. We all know the pro made a more polished version, but the beginner did quite a good job for someone who's only been doing this for a few months. I'd listen to both versions again.
This was fun to watch, great info as well!
Nathan I love your track so much, iâm trying to produce using garage band because I have limited resources, i always thought of upgrading my tools for better work, but you proved the tools do not really matter, the skill does. You are really inspiring âŁïž
I really love Dexter's version - largely BECAUSE he doesn't use drums - it's akin to an acoustic version and the simplicity and minor key vibe draws me in - I would wholeheartedly agree that adding drums for the NEXT part of the song, the unwritten second verse, would be amazing to step it up. It's like he understands that it's a short song, like a short film, where you can't do everything you'd do in a longer song/feature film, so you create a snapshot of potential for a bigger production. Both are fantastic though and I'd love to hear a full version of the song
Hey Dexter, great job on that track, the only thing it lacked was some experience, so keep at it because you've got a really solid base.
Forget about the haters, the internet is their playground.

Props Dex!! Kepp it up brotha!
Both were fantastic, and the making of the songs were totally entertaining guys⊠loved it
Interesting, two complete versions. Beginner was more creative in his interpretation
Both tracks were solid. The pro brought more tools to the show, which ultimately led to a much richer track.
I think this sort of battle would be better served if one of the producers hadn't created the base stems. Since Nathan wrote and created the core stems, he's got a significant advantage over the novice. Agreed, Dexter's track was a great listen.
Nathan, this is a cool video and you two guys are so friendly, I love it! Your production shows how it should be. Very cool arrangement and no fear to use FX. Wish I would be so creative too. Thanks for this kind of stuff!
