- Former Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, who at 14 became the first woman to score a perfect 10, reflects on that gold-medal performance at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal. "The older I get, I realize that what I've done was such a big thing," she says.

Nadia Comaneci Returns to Montreal 41 Years After Her Perfect 10
• Nadia Comaneci Reflect... - Sport
I was a kid In 1976. I remember a little neighbor girl saying "when I grow up I will be a Comaneci". That neighbor girl was so smart and beautiful like an angel. After 2 or 3 years later she died of cancer. Every time i hear about Comaneci I remember that little angel.
RIP Elpiniki
Thanks so much for sharing this!
Rest in peace
Even if you're sick your dreams will always keep you in the fight...All these inspiring athletes helps so many kids, thanks you for sharing this story, never forget all these little fairies dead too soon...

RIP
I relate to her as I idolized her so much during my young somewhat successful gymnast youth. To make a long story short I had a shot at the Junior Olympics but, when my grandfather died of cancer in October of 1976 my whole world sort of changed.
I watched Nadia in the Olympics as a little girl, and she so impressed me. I even named my first daughter Nadia. Hearing her speak now really moves and inspires me once again. Thank you, Nadia, for who you are! God bless you.

One of the greatest athletes of all time. Now, a charming lady.
I don’t think there’s been any female gymnast like her since or up to now. No matter what they say.
I feel that Elena Mukhina certainly had the potential but they broke her many times over. They never appreciated the talent they got. They only wanted more. She never had a chance.
@@kevinthunder3375 I don’t know. I’ll have to check into that.
@@rossriver75 Simone is definitely ATHLETICALLY better but the thing with her is that she does purely or mostly just athleticism. And there’s a reason why this sport is called ARTISTIC gymnastics. Sure her routines are harder than Nadia’s but Nadia not only was amazingly athletic she was also very artistic. And btw, not only Simone, in general this sport has become mostly or entirely just athleticism, which isn’t a bad thing per say. But they shouldn’t call it artistic if it’s not artistic. 😅
@@al.s.3277 Yeah, that’s an interesting point.
I remember seeing the cover of Time magazine with Nadia's picture and the title "SHE'S PERFECT!" Never, NEVER before in Olympic history had anyone scored perfect 10s for a performance. It was witnessing someone who was doing something that was thought totally impossible. Beyond awe-inspiring, even all these decades later.
Exactly as I remember it!
Нелли Ким на той же Олимпиаде тоже получила дважлы 10 баллов. За опорный прыжок и вольные упражнения!
They never expected anyone to get that 10, they didn't even prepare for it on the scoreboard! She was a major inspiration to many young people.
Except that modern gymnasts are much better than her, lol.
@@Tugela60 "Better?" Today's female gymnasts are masculine, overmuscled freaks that are not gymnasts, but tumblers. At least Nadia looked like a girl!
My dad doesn't know who was the host of last Olympic games nor the host of the upcoming one either. But he remembers Montreal Olympics as if it happened yesterday just because of Nadia!!!
Hugs to your dad 💟🧚♀️
I remember... i was more or less her age back in our country Romania: after that her incredible performances )... everybody every girl was trying to do... o bit of her exercises....we were so proud of her
Sanie Isleam With good measure! Here in the US, all of us young girls wanted to be like Nadia.
I was her once to just a little kid growing up in Romania
You have a lot to be proud of. No one can ever take that from you
I was born in the 80's but I remember when I was in gymnastics my instructor saying I was brave like her. I didn't know who she was talking about. It's cool to see who she was talking about now.
Sanie Isleam Așa este.
The effortless way she landed the dismount on the uneven bars just leaves me breathless.
8 years of training... from when she was 6 yrs to 14. almost 8 hours a day... cca 16,000 hours of training... lots of effort spent for all those effortless landings .... 🙉🥇
Wow...all these years and she is still so great. Humility as another 10.0
At 14 she was participating in the olympics... and at 22 im still living with my parents...
I feel so seen
🤣
@drperiwinkle THANK YOU 💖
It is harder now for young people to make it on their own. Everything costs so much. It is not you.
what does one thing have to do with the other? at 6 she had a coach making her do gymnastics. and 10 the Karolys spotted her and made her their mission. they pushed her harder than any little girl would choose - and i doubt whether she had a choice. i bet your parents are OKAY with you living at home as long as you're doing something with your life - something that YOU feel passionate about or called to or something that you believe in or something that doesn't make you feel like you are just taking up space on this earth that could be better served by someone else. nadia had the weight of a country on her back and shoulders. if you live in the modern age - all you have is your own dreams and your own drive on yours. You only get one life - so what are YOU going to do with it? Nothing wrong with being home at 22. What's wrong is if you are doing nothing with your life at 22 or any other age. At 22 - the world is STILL your oyster. Whatever you want to do - you better start doing it, because tomorrow you will be 52 and you'll wonder what you did with those 30 years in between and WISH you had them to do all over again. So do it NOW - while you have the youth, the strength, the mind, the desire, and the chance to stack up enough dominoes in your favor so that when they finally fall - you will be able to appreciate, enjoy, and share the benefits!
When I was a kid she was my hero and I just love her 💖

They actually had a song that was popular at the time called Nadia’s theme. She was a national sensation. Every little girl wanted to be her. I can’t believe how fantastic and young she looks.
yep the theme was from the movie blessed beast and the child then Nadias theme then young and the restless lol
It was so popular that every little girl after 1976 had a jewelry box with a ballerina that twirled and played “Nadia’s theme” when you opened it. Or else it was “Love Story.”
@@michaelsamuels9901 i was about to say y and r
The song was the theme song from “The Young and the Restless” and had been their theme song for four years (starting in 1972) before Nadia’s 1976 olympics. I always thought that was kind of tacky.
I absolutely did NOT want to be her. I was 9, and I liked watching her, it was thrilling, but I remember looking at her, trying to imagine what she was feeling, and I did not like that feeling. Too many people, so much noise, physical contortions that were ridiculous....I remember thinkin, “No thanks,” and going outside to read under the lilac trees. THAT is what children are supposed to do, not train like maniacs with mentally ill adults who push and force and push. NO THANKS!!!
She had the confidence of a kid. Also, Nadia was a foreigner who wasn't thinking about valuable commercial endorsements. Her thoughts were to pleasing Bela, her coach. With these simple ideas in her head, she performed flawlessly. The judging system was based on tenths of a point. After Nadia's perfect 10's, the scoring system was extended to thousandths of a point, making it impossible to get a perfect 10. Nadia's accomplishments will stand the test of time!
In '76, I was 14 years old and fell head over heels in love with her. Fast forward to today and I am still in love with this beautiful classy woman. She has been through a lot and is still amazing. Best wishes to her and Bart Conner.

@@jonothandoeser depends on how one diagrams the sentence. There is a lot of room for interpretation here. Thanks for sharing yours.
@@daviddavid9837 You could also use a period or a dash. But a comma would never be correct there.
@@jonothandoeser The two infinitive phrases function as nouns, direct objects of the verb. They are appositives. Two nonrestrictive appositives at the end of a sentence may absolutely be separated by a comma, and this is the general rule, though a dash may be used. I did it again here in the first sentence. The infinitive phrases in question are not independent clauses. There are no conjuctive adverbs. There are no items in series where those items contain commas. While some might opt for a semicolon as an element of personal style, a semicolon is not required punctuation in the sentence, and one might also represent its use here is incorrect. Why must so many comments in YT turn into unrelated debates initiated by self-appointed lunch ladies and hall monitors of punctuation, grammar, and style? Such indulgences are largely peripheral, off-topic, and tangential. They add no value to the discussion and only detract.
I saw this performance as a kid. I remember the adulation. She still seems so humble. What a classy lady.

I remember the day, my whole family was watching. Thank you for the memories.
I watched her in my 20's, in absolute awe. I thought, if perfection exists, she is it. That determined little chin, lithe body like a rubber band, that perfect dive into the air, blind faith, landing like a cat on the mat perfectly. And the weightlessness on the bar! Her elegant hand movements, her sense of balance, and the effortlessness of her routines, almost a bird with wings. I loved you little Nadia! What a thing of sheer beauty you are.
Pure poetry in motion.

Best gymnast of all time and that’s just cut and dry!
Yes, she is the GOAT!
We are the same age - girls in 1976 were in awe of her! I remember the first time she spoke to Jim McKay and said her name, “Comaneci Nadia.” I was watching with my father, who is Hungarian, and he told us that in Hungary and Romania you say your last name first. It’s still very endearing to remember her introduction to the world. 😊
I just loved that! My step mom was Hungarian, your message went straight to my heart.
She is a genius, a legendary gymnast! I cannot imagine a world without Nadia Comaneci. An olympic gold medalist at 14, you will be an inspiration to many young girls for generations to come.
Lisa D It is customary in Asian countries like China, Japan and Korea to give your last name first. I suppose many countries do, but here in the USA we do not. It is a cultural thing. The family name being of greater importance than one’s individual name, I suppose. The reason I know this is I am bi-racial - born in the US, raised here - my father an American and my mother Korean. I have been exposed to both Western and Eastern cultures for my entire life. I am now 57. I have always loved Nadia!!! I was just about to turn 12 in 1976; I was TRANSFIXED by her ever since I first saw her. It is wonderful seeing all this footage again! So many lovely memories. Nadia was, and still is, a very special person. She was captivating at age 14, and even today there is that quality about her that compels one to watch and listen to her. @@SuperDawgDaddy Simone has a fiercer and more high-octane energy about her. Nadia is more about grace, lightness and effortlessness. So many young child actors who become super famous early in life loose their way and fall from grace. This young lady became very famous like no one else , yet she had the character and fortitude to remain balanced. A class act way back then , a class act now. Much respect.
I think there is a particular kind of fame that ruins people more like others. As a gymnast you are not nearly as exposed to sexualization as child actors are. And then especially in the 90s and early 2000s through the rise of the internet - becoming world famous suddenly reached a new dimension. From my perspective famous children who ended up in drug addiction and psychosis are always a product of their surroundings.
