Yes! I've loved this particular song & specialy its lyrics for quite sometime! Lol! Yes sometimes you have to say "So Long Its Good To Know Ya" before someone has to asks you to leave ! Unfortunately, the person who I was trying to communicate this message wasn't able to completely understand my request & hung in there & continued to become a huge "pain in the ass!" during my life.LOL! OMG! The Weavers were first known as The Almanac Singers. They were an impoverished folk group that sang and hung out in Greenwich Village in New York in he early 50s. They were sort of the first wave of the hippies. Gordon Jenkins, the A&R man at Decca Records, heard them sing at a club in the Village. In between all their discovery they changed their name to The Weavers. So now, Gordon Jenkins signed them to Decca. Their music was played constantly on the radio after their break. What's not widely known is that Burl Ives and Will Geer (Grandpa Walton) were occasional singers with The Weavers. And yes, Burl Ives had some hits at the same time The Weavers were hitmakers. When yer hot, yer hot. An quasi Hebrew "folk song" Tzena, Tzena" was originally in a minor key. When The Weavers recorded it, it was voila in a melodic key. As to their blacklisting, they were about as communist as Bob Dylan or PPM when they sang their hippy/folk songs. Hey folks, its just show biz!
So long, it’s been good to know you So long, it’s been good to know you So long, it’s been good to know you What a long time since I’ve been home and I’ve got to be drifting along I’ve sung this song, but I’ll sing it again Of the people I’ve met, and the places I’ve been Some of the troubles that bothered my mind And a lot of good people that I’ve left behind, singin’ Chorus The sweethearts they sat in the dark and they sparked They hugged and they kissed in that dusty old dark They sighed and they cried and they hugged and they kissed But instead of marriage, they call it like this Chorus I went to your family, I asked them for you They all said take her, oh, take her please do She can’t cook or sew and she won’t scrub your floor So I put on my coat, tiptoed out the door, singin’ Chorus I walked down the street to the grocery store, It was crowded with people, both rich and both poor I asked the man how his butter was sold He said one pound of butter for two pounds of gold. I said Chorus My telephone rang, and it jumped off the wall That was the preacher a’ making a call He said we’re waitin’ to tie the knot You’re gettin’ married, believe it or not Well the church it was jammed, the church it was packed The pews were from crowded from the front to the back A thousand friends waited to kiss my new bride But I was so anxious, I rushed her outside, told ‘em Chorus
Great Song!! Great lyrics! Brings back huge memories. Still makes me laugh whenever i sing it today! I wish more people would learn how to say "So Long" in this rather short life. Sincereley with Love, julio c. henriques/artist since 1961
This group was magic. The blend...the strong female vocal. What was a summer nite during that time without Goodnight Irene, Cruisin down the River, or So Long, it's Been Good to Know You?
I know where I'm going and I know whose going with me. I know who I love and my love knows who I"ll marry. I've had stockings of silk and shoes of bright green leather; combs to buckle my hair and a ring for every finger. Some say he's bad but I say he's bonnie. fairest of them all is my handsome winsome johnny.
Today I made up my own verse: Now I've lived my life and I've dealt with some crap Before very long I will take my dirt nap You've got 28 months the oncologist said But after that, you will likely be dead So it's...
This was America over 70 years ago. It's called our heritage. Nothing sacred or evil. How old are you anyhow? Are you stuck in those times? You understand that Communism is a pretty dead thing now as an ideology? The only serious country is Cuba.
A boyhood friend named Peter Wehrwein had a 45 of this song, I found it on 78. Thanks Pete!

Would that have been in New Zealand, Dave? If so, all best wishes to you and your family, take care and stay safe. Howard
The Weavers adding a positive note to the theme of song.

Many were Party mrmbers.
The people on the album cover above were early hippies / beatniks!? 😲
ah we sung this song at school when the year 6 left
In my mum's primary they'd sing this whenever someone left
So long, it’s been good to know you
So long, it’s been good to know you
So long, it’s been good to know you
What a long time since I’ve been home
and I’ve got to be drifting along
I’ve sung this song, but I’ll sing it again
Of the people I’ve met, and the places I’ve been
Some of the troubles that bothered my mind
And a lot of good people that I’ve left behind, singin’
Chorus
The sweethearts they sat in the dark and they sparked
They hugged and they kissed in that dusty old dark
They sighed and they cried and they hugged and they kissed
But instead of marriage, they call it like this
Chorus
I went to your family, I asked them for you
They all said take her, oh, take her please do
She can’t cook or sew and she won’t scrub your floor
So I put on my coat, tiptoed out the door, singin’
Chorus
I walked down the street to the grocery store,
It was crowded with people, both rich and both poor
I asked the man how his butter was sold
He said one pound of butter for two pounds of gold. I said
Chorus
My telephone rang, and it jumped off the wall
That was the preacher a’ making a call
He said we’re waitin’ to tie the knot
You’re gettin’ married, believe it or not
Well the church it was jammed, the church it was packed
The pews were from crowded from the front to the back
A thousand friends waited to kiss my new bride
But I was so anxious, I rushed her outside, told ‘em
Chorus
This should be pinned to the top of the comments.
thanks for the lyrics !

I bought a 78rpm of this song by a male singer whose name I can't remember at a church jumble sale in about 1967. I was about 10. Any ideas anyone?

Such a funny song! I love it!!
Great song but unfortunate the record company made them change the lyrics
This might just be the greatest song ever written....
People should use the philosophy of the song more often IMHO.
takes me back to my school days when we used to sing this.
Great
Really has been good to know Pete, a true inspiration.
And a communist.

I sing this when I think of an old boss of mine!
A lot of us do, without the "been good to know you". 😂
@@OspreyFlyer Exactly. One in particular was a crook. So long, I'd like to boot ya!
Going to have this sung at my funeral
at 0:57...did she say " they huff and fart." ??. PRICELESS.!! . The good old days.
"park", not fart
She DID say fart. I may be a spaniard but I know when I hear the word.🤣😂😁😀
No, you're lying. Not even close.
"The sweethearts they sat in the dark and they sparked
They hugged and they kissed in that dusty old dark"
The two words do go together nicely. 😂
She DID say "they huff and fart". SHE DID.! !,
Pont you really hurt me

This version is so campy and what makes it worse, is that Kommie SOB Pete Singer was the lead..
Like him or not, he was a super talent.
This is 70 years ago. Think about it.
Fwiw, I knew a banker who met him in the 80s. He said Pete was okay.
I have to admit. Those communists wrote some good music. It was subversive but nonetheless, you have to give credit where its due.
Are you saying "communist" as if it were a bad thing?
