I had no idea Michelle Dockery could sing, let alone sing like that! There's nowhere to hide vocally when singing a capella. She was phenomenal.
she sang a little in downton abbey too, “if you were the only girl in the world”, season 2 episode 4, one of my favorite scenes
She even has her own band. They're not well known, but a little digging and you can find some live recordings or a handful of studio recordings
That's not just an exceptional vocal, it's an acted vocal, stabilising as the character goes from hesitant and emotional to confident and lost in her moment. Very few actresses could pull that off quite like this. Bravo.
She is a phenominal actress.

I sang “ somewhere over the rainbow” to my mother as her spirit left her , it was her favorite song . This is so beautiful
my poor dad - we sang "Ring of Fire" to him, and thought, " oh, man, maybe we shouldn't sing it, since he's gonna be cremated. we think he'd have appreciated the irony...
She's so brilliant. Not just the voice, but the range. Hard to believe this is the same person who played Lady Mary ❤❤❤

Agreed. Her version is beautiful and spot-on. I never would have guessed it was the same person who played Lady Mary. Glad to see her expanding beyond that role.
A beautiful scene - the way her singing goes from hesitant to full-bodied, and the mourners shift from awkward to deeply moved, is beautifully done.
Thankfully, they let her sing this "live," rather than lip syncing to a prerecorded studio version, as is usually done in movies and TV. The immediacy of the performance, the live timbre, and the genuine reaction of the other actors to her real performance made the scene incredibly affecting.
The acoustics in the church add to the performance and that would be missing if they’d done a studio version. Excellent job.

She sang at the 50th Anniversary of Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London and has occasionally sung with Sadie and the Hotheads, a band formed by Elizabeth McGovern, who played her mother in Downton Abbey.[31] In February 2022, it was announced that Dockery and her Downton Abbey co-star Michael C. Fox had signed a record deal with Decca Records as the duo Michelle and Michael.

What a phenomenal actress. At first -- and maybe second and third-- glance, you would never know that was Lady Mary. I am so glad she included the intro to the song-- I recorded SOTR a capella, 7 times, melody and 6 harmonies, and several people said they hadn't even known that the intro existed until they heard my version.
I'd never heard the intro before today, and I collect renditions of SOTR. This has me in tears. Eva Cassidy does that to me, but I'd never heard this before. How personal and intimate.

As soon as she started to sing I was tearing up. That song never fails to make me cry. I have zero context to the scene or the actors in it but it still broke my heart. That is a good performance.

@@billyriedel6449Yes! She and Michael Fox, the guy who played Andrew, on Downton, have recorded together. He is quite talented, as well. And just for one other little trivia nugget, he’s also in a long-term relationship with Laura Carmichael, who played Lady Edith. They have a son, together.
That was beautiful. I used to sing that song to my mother when I was taking care of her the last couple years of her life. We played a recording of Ella Fitzgerald singing Over the Rainbow at my mother's graveside service. I haven't been able to sing that song since she died in 2022, it was really emotional listening to it now.
My mom died at the end of 2022, and yes, that song will always be a special reminder of her. Only last week I heard Ella's version in a shop, and I almost broke down, it was so amazing. Brava Michelle, well done 🥰🐦🌈👏💗

This scene is beyond comparison for what it stirs in my soul.
