God if more people only knew the invaluable information Jack has dished out regarding targeting tuna on spinning gear. You’ll always have the morons going “Wahhh an improved FG knot takes an extra minute to tie”. Don’t worry, the real ones are super grateful for all of the FREE content you guys at the SWE and Jack are providing. Casting your setup WELL before you have fish busting up in front of you is massive, it doesn’t matter how perfect your setup is. The way you follow through, your technique, the rod choice and the guide size (especially stripper and running guides) and guide layout (like the RV guides on the Ocea Plugger are incredible), where you choose to have you hollowcore to leader serve or FG knot when you make your cast….it all comes down to the details and the nerds out there like me appreciate guys like Jack who know those details are the difference between fish stories and fish landed. Thank you boys 🙏🏼

Great equipment overview. I’m fishing outside Tokyo in the Pacific for yellowtail, mahi, amberjack and tuna. Here, they generally recommend solid to split rings at the terminal end. I’m also using an fg knot on the leader (nylon or fluoro) and a Palomar or Centauri knot for the solid ring.

I do a lot of saltwater popping on the west coast for large YFT. One rec I would add to this is to upgrade the hooks and split rings on all poppers. The stock split rings and especially the hooks fail quite a bit. I've found myself bending hooks back with pliers after a couple of hook ups. Upgrading to 3x and 4x trebles reduces this issue, but does not eliminate it.
Love the recommendation on the swivel brand/model to the split ring for big poppers-walkers-stick baits. And even though I’m a Westcoaster with all conventional reels I appreciated the rubber band tip, good stuff 👍🏻

I started throwing big poppers when I'm chumming for sharks off NJ last season. I was shocked at the results I got. The 1st time I tried it I had a monster blacktip chase it all the way to the boat and it was awesome to watch that thing do it's thing. A few weeks later I was up on my bow just kind of practicing my casting and got crushed by a 97lb bluefin 😂. After that I was up there every trip. I also am doing this in a very small boat(16ft). I use a BG10000 with 65lb braid. I got it on a stand up spinning rod I had Custom made. It's not the best caster but it pulls double duty when I troll occasionally

@@SaltwaterEdge it is always an adventure. Here we have to usually run no less 20 miles offshore to get to any kind of decent water. I've had that boat out to about 45 mile offshore. Last year I really hurt some feelings with 52lb wahoo.

What a great 2-part series. Do you use an FG knot to tie braid to leader or use wind on leaders?
The answer is both, wind ons are the preferred method but the FG is a close second. When wind-ons aren't available or have been cut back too far, switching to a braid to FG knot setup can be necessary. A good FG knot is also more budget friendly!
Thanks for the video. Besides being less smooth through the guides, why would I not use 80pound power pro(not hollow core) to 100lb fluoro with an FG knot? Is the hollow core and splicing necessary?
Great question, hollow core has some distinct advantages when it comes to big game fishing, it allows you to have more line on your reel (hollow so it packs down tighter,) splicing allows for a seamless line to leader transition, and splicing gives you a 100% line to leader break strength. That being said there are plenty of boats out there catching plenty of tuna with heavy-duty braid with knotted-on leaders. There are plenty of options out there and part of the fun of top-water tuna fishing is figuring out the gear that works for you and the fishery around you
Is there a difference between this shimano pliers and the shimano power pliers besides the price? Also what the difference between the BKK and Owners St-66 in size 5/0 trebles? Thank you for the great info! Awesome video!
Hi, Thanks for the comment! These are the Shimano Power Pliers in the video, there are two sizes of them with the larger size being more expensive: saltwateredge.com/products/shimano-power-plier.
The two main differences between the BKK and owner hooks in that size are that the BKK hooks have a hand ground point and are a little bit thinner wire at the same strength. Hope that helps, thanks!
Is there a rod that can be used for both jigging and popping for somebody who only gets out a couple days a year?
The action on both rods are pretty different, I would steer you towards a popping rod like a Terez or Grappler and use that for occasionally jigging as well. That would be better than trying to throw a popper with a jigging rod.
Which knot do you use for mono to braid?
FG or a PR Bobbin for the best mono to braid connection
Headed out on my first Tuna trip in September. I was wondering if my Ocea Jigger 4000 spooled with 50-60lb braid and 60# Flourocarbon leader will work for jigging..
Absolutely. You just want to watch out for giants and use heavier gear if you mark bigger fish. For most recreational tuna that setup will work great
@@SaltwaterEdge thanks for the reply. I'm also bringing a TLD II 30 A 2spd. I think it holds 300yds of 60lb mono. Would I bet better off using all mono or go with a braid backing? I will be on a headboat so I won't have unlimited space.
If you do use the TLD definitely put some braid backing on there. As for what reel to bring, it’s always the one you are more experienced with and more comfortable with. When that tuna hits you want to know exactly how your setup is going to react
I can't find a ready-made wind on leader for jigging, 80-100 lb, longer than 20 feet, please help to find! Aftcos are too short.
Hi, your best bet for that may be to extend the leader with a blood knot or your leader to leader knot of choice
What size stella for popping in cape cod ?
Anything 14k and above should work great

Absolutely
Is a 30,000 Stella overkill??
Not for a 600lb tuna! The downside to a reel that size is the weight, a full day of casting a 30k reel is not an easy task
