    / top8tt Wong Chun Ting (黃鎮廷) is a penhold table tennis player from Hong Kong. He has very good reverse penhold backhand, in my opinion the best from all active players. In 2016, he won a bronze medal in singles event at the Men's World Cup. As of October 2016, he is the number 7 player in the world.

    wow no. 7 in the world now. He has a really good package and very steady RPB and can push some good players from China. With better mental training and tactical resourcefulness he should be beating lower ranked players more efficiently and cutting that gap from the best Chinese..

    He's using the backhand like shakehanders do while having the advantages of penholders on forehand, impressive!

    It's interesting to see that, Wong Chun Ting's style is actually brand new.
    He does not use the same RPB as Wang Hao or Xu xin, the fingers on the bh is differently positioned, more curled, taking less space. His grip is basically a penhold BH oriented grip and he also made it to the national team very late.
    Maybe the same grip could be even more successful if harnessed from earlier age?
    Just a thought.

      @FormostPanda Před 7 lety +2

      I thought his curled fingers were reminiscent of the penhold grip of the Koreans. I wonder if Wong Chung Ting started using the old penhold style.

      Wong Chun Ting once said that when he was growing up in Hong Kong and started to play Table Tennis, he used only one side of the blade, as everyone else at this time, later he started using the backhand

      Mmmm not quite. Wang Hao grip is the actual penhold bh oriented grip Liugouliang explained the different grips of penhold and he said wang has the more optimal grip. I'm not saying wong chun ting grip is wrong but rpb is not really all about making more space in the back. Yes wct has more space but his grip loses out on stability from the more extended fingers grip. But yes wct style is different plays both sides tensor like shakehand European players, it like hes trying to play a shakehand game with penhold

      @ngrx8750 Před 2 lety +1

      Imo, this also depends on your hands and fingers size.
      Maybe WCTs ones are capable for such a grip, but I can't imagine someone like Xu Xin holding the racket this way cuz his fingers are too long.

    In order for him to attain greatness, the only way is to minimize errors and improve on consistency. His style of play has something in common with Kei Nishikori, IMHO. I really like his change of speed and variety of strokes.

      only WCT and Wang hao favor their rpb (and also maybe Xue Fei). Ma lin favors his forehand more than his backhand(which,half of the time, is tpb, andnot rpb). WCT and Wang Hao have a balance of backhand and forehand.

    what makes he be a "modern" penholder? that's not a criticism, just a question

    • @lawrencemonsieur2627
      @lawrencemonsieur2627 Před 7 lety +9

      Mizutani Jun TT Because he is a rather new face and probably one of the few penholders left for the future besides Xu Xin. Hence the name "modern", which is slightly wrong. It should be "modern day penholder"

      I think a "modern penholder" refers to the reverse penhold backhand. The RPB was probably invented by Liu GuoLiang and turned into the default penhold backhand by Wang Hao. Wong Chung Ting seems to have turned a previous weakness into a real strength: he doesn't even avoid the RPB anymore, he cherishes it and almost converts himself into a backhand oriented penholder!!!
