When the first video came out I was thinking "why doesn't George have a CNC?" but after all these videos I'm thinking "why doesn't every factory just have a George?"
Because good tradies like George and me , get used up and exploited by employers, that want stuff done faster and faster each time and never show appreciation to their workmanship as they ALSO want it done cheaper and cheaper time and time again. Because they the ones making the money. The employee is just a tool to use until he's rooted and got nothing left
Enjoyed watching the repair alot more than I thought I would. What a legend George is!
Timmy your very Lucky to have someone like George, 👌👌
After the 'how to build a boat' series the sequel is 'how to destroy a boat'.
I do lots of these, just cut a piece of T6 (6061) plate to fit, TIG it in and grind to shape. Had a bent skeg on brothers boat fail at high speed after bent and straightened - looped it, lots of damage. Just cut off and replace, takes less time.
Yep. You can certainly try and "re-bend" aluminum. It will fail...
Totally agree done lots of these. But this isn't in my opinion the way to repair
That would defs boil oil
Damn Timmy! I feel for you man. That's heart breaking. Just have to be thankful it wasn't worse I guess 😔 good on George the absolute legend for sorting it out.
George is a true,master!
I bet the flash burns to his eyes were brutal. I couldn't believe it when I saw him welding without a shield.
If you look closely, he's using safety squints
Ever get sunburn by it? Happened twice. I close my eyes but that light burned my skin
@@bee2333 yes I have. Used to stay tan year round
And grinding without googles !! .. accidents waiting to happen !! ..
Step back. The Master has entered...is there anything this man can't do....well done....
He is amazing. A true master.
George's eye lids must be like leather or they are bloody good glasses he has there 🤣
joeyhummer
How the hell is he doing all that spotting without getting a massive flash ? That's crazy
Steiny
He potentially won't get a flash by closing his eyes every time (in sync) with each spot weld he does, yes some glasses can help minimise the affect of welding flash, however potentially a bit of ray burn to the face and any uncovered body part might be a factor there.
Also, being filmed like that in action, he might have a tough time claiming any workers' compensation from future serious eye damage or skin cancer. I hope he is the actual owner of the business and not an employee
We are all indestructible before someone serious happens.
@@jb243wp ..It's the (in sync) where the wheels usually fall off the cart. I've done a lot of mig welding over the years, and still do a bit now and then. (I'm no expert by any means 🤣) but I have had a few flashes here and there and they are no fun, as you probably know. I think he does own the business, not sure, but letting your workers go barefooted in this sort of business, even if you are just the manager, is not a smart move IMO. He's leaving himself wide open to trouble from WHSO's and/or litigation from the guy wearing no safety boots if he gets a serious (even crippling), injury.
I'm not hanging s**t on George for a minute. He sounds like a good down to earth no bs bloke, but this video is self incriminating, just as some dash cam footages can be for motorists.
I watched the whole build video and was very impressed. Great job.
@steiny3353 I totally agree, a crippling injury obtained by an employer and these days he could potentially find himself in a costly legal battle from lack of duty and care as a PCBU with his insurance company, unfortunately its all there for everyone to see in his vids.
Nevertheless, he appears to be a great craftsman.
Hi Tim,
I have a 2021 115 Pro XS and every time my outboard goes in for service, they spray the skeg with the OEM Mercury silver paint. Doesn’t matter if my skeg has hit a few sand bars with paint missing, I always get it back looking brand new. I’d say most authorised Mercury service centres will stock this paint for this exact scenario.
What would you do without George? He is a genuine legend!
George the bloody legend.
Mate I hope your business is bumming because your a master craftsmen and a bloody good bloke....
George is a star!
Nice repair for sure!
Nice job George 👍
So glad George didn't try to get that last bit of bend out. It could easily be the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. I would have used a very heavy dolly halfway up the skeg while hitting the lower section so that the bending happened in that area, but you got away with it hopefully.
That was a beautiful work. I'm trying to find a place to repair my skeg.
It happens mate trust me wiped the whole skigg off mine. That man is a fantastic tradesmen
I really tuned in here just to see what a skeg was. Now you have a black fin. Nice work as usual George. That thing should last the life of the motor. Maybe you could’ve come back the opposite direction and straighten that out a little first.
Soooooooo Lucky, and also Sooooooo lucky you have a mate that can fix it :)
not how l would have done it but the jobs done and your happy
truly entertaining
Always wondered how to fix these.. dont think ive ever had an outboard i havent damaged 😂
Might have to give George a call to fix my yamaha up!
A few wacks and she dialed!!! This guy is amazing
I've replaced a few broken skiers. They were a pain because of the city cast aluminium. I tig welded mine
Best safety brief for the cutting discs “don’t be a dickhead, it’ll cut limbs off!”, gold! 😂
Your a unit mate 👍
Not in to the fishing part ---- did watch the hole boat build GREAT , good to see George again --- ok you too ;)
George the repair master
Hi Timmy, luv the boat and the videos.... Just wondering have you been up there working for George and Samurai Boats or working elsewhere? Thanks.
Impressed by george's talent. No luck with that log timmy!!! Howz the roof coming along?
Did you not have insurance mate? Claim a whole new leg or casing?
Mate thats boating. It's always something. Respect to George.
You deserve and need some GOOD LUCK Timmy.
George the legend!!!
What’s is the ‘compound’ George added to the flap wheel when grinding back the Aluminum?
George is very good to you Timmy.
Lovely new boat and what not insured.
I wouldn't have filmed this, any gearbox issues they'll probably void ya warranty after seeing this
They don’t have issues lol. They won’t just give you a 7k gearbox under warranty for your neg driving just repair it and move on as has been done.
Timmy what a bummer!
Would this void any kind of warranty?
Glad he had his reading glasses on
5:48 nice content 🤣
You need to now make a special storage compartment in the boat where you can store a “George”
everyone needs a George in their lives
Just a quick question?-
why not cutout - profile new piece - and weld in ?
Instead of ‘trying’ to buildup with MIG wire !!!
Also what grade is the existing Aluminum (6063 T6 ) ? And what grade of mig wire do you use ?
is it softer now because of he heat
It’s not what ya know it’s who ya know 😂
Tell me you have insurance Timmy? Hope there isn’t any more unseen damage. I hit a rock after bout 4 hours on my new Yamaha 40 it didn’t look that bad but we ended up having to do a whole new gearbox and shaft thankfully on insurance.
stainless prop?
Is that beeswax you’re putting on your grinder desk and what’s the purpose of it?
excellentay!
That's an insurance job if ever I saw one. I wouldn't even risk ruining the gearbox
What type of motor? Looks like Honda lower unit, but appears black like a Mercury
That skeg did it's job: $$$aved the Prop!
Feel sorry for you mate! But good job in fixing it up 👍
Put those ally cutting blades on a battery grinder, that way if you cause yourself a mischief you'll only cut half of your limb off 👍
@FishingWithTimmyTurtle. thanks
Oh the joy of owning a boat... This is why it's better to have friends with a boat over owning one yourself.
BANG BANG SNAP
Ouch.
Timmy you are a proper noob aren’t ya mate 😂
Lucky Timmy
that should be on all sites s.o.p.s "don't be a dickhead they'll cut limbs off" and that safety squint is on point
My first thought was what about insurance
Toughest eyes 👀 in north Queensland.
That’s why we pay insurance!
This guy has been welding like this for years, he very confident in his welding.
But what he don't know is that every time he pulls the trigger on that gun he is
destroying his eyes a little bit each time. Just because you "close" your eyes doesn't mean
your not hurting them.
Don't believe me, go see an Ophthalmologists.
It hard to work if ya can't see!!
Go see that doc before its to late.
Also one helluva suntan! Retired MIG & TIG welder for 40 years. That said, he did do it properly. Welding spots keeps heat input down and MIG sounded dialed in perfectly.
@@hokep61
Your fooling yourself and so is the guy doing the welding.
$6890 for a new one Timmy!
Checkout Skeg Guard they do replacements
Where’s ya bloody welding helmet George
If you hit with Inox prop you will lost everything, you are lucky.. my Mate also hit something last week and hi lost half down of a engine. It was 1yr old Suzuki 300😢
Jesus christ. You and rokkit have the same amount of luck as me with boat. I highly recommend racq for boat insurance.
Tis the risk ya run in creeks. Lucky it wasn’t a rock
Copper backing plate would go a long way while doing a repair like this.
So would a welding helmet, but who doesn't love a little extra skin cancer.
Just go back to the log and hit it backwards!
Ya farts rowdy ? Mine are cooking my dirt pipe.. he got one of those dardy CAT soft hammers too.
Shit happens mate it’s just a thing, I just towed our van across the corner of a f-ing shopping centre shade sail ,split the roof open and the insurance company wrote it of, 3 yrs old , it happens to all of us eventually
Get back out fishing
Cheers from down south
Stainless prop if that stump hit the prop good chance gearbox would be stuffed as stainless has no give
Just FYI those skegs are suppose to be bent a little on the Mercs...
Skeg repair, cut it off and weld a new one is what a repair shop would do...🤪🤫👍👍
Nothing like grinding dust on your socks or your legs
yowch
Old mate is going to go blind
No goggles?
Here's an idea....just go back down the river and whop it back the other way?
I’m subscribed to the channel but never in my algorithm?
If I ever win Lotto my first stop is Georges shop for the boat of my dreams.
Goes faster without a skeg....
why do a bush repair when you are in a workshop, why risk the gearbox when you could have taken it off and not put the final drive at risk of over heating. Timmy don't you have insurance ????
The oil isn’t the problem. Got nothing to do with the oil, it will actually protect to a degree. The problem with heat is damage to the seals. Why didn’t you use insurance? And have the lower gearbox replaced not repaired. 45/50k of engine there.
Stainless steel sleeve mate stop it bending again
Take the chill out of the Aluminiuim.
Before, you start pounding on it with a Hammer 🙄
At least the Repair was painted with Black paint to hide the Porosity 😬
That was a job for the tig,far too much porosity in that weld, and should have used two hammers to straiten that keel fin.secondly use some beeswax on the disc to shet kerf and makes the wheel last.I would have used a piece of infill for the chip, plus not using a shield was just gross and shows lack of respect for the rays that are put out.armature job.
no helmet
Just cut it off with a jigsaw
There overrated 😂
Without using the proper equipment like the welding helmet hanging on the wall, your not giving your customer a quality job
Is this fella even qualified. Not the way to repair a skeg
I wasn't aware skeg welding was a certified qualification
