As someone who worked at a family restaurant that NO LONGER USES doordash, it was awful. We ended up closing door dash orders super early because they kept showing up after we closed our kitchen despite that. I, as the person who managed the 35-item order and stacked it perfectly into four large bags and directly handed it to the driver, got 0 tips from all of my effort and they charged the restaurant a huge commission. And don’t even start me on the drivers who’d take the wrong person’s order if I didn’t directly hand it to them or take only one of the bags and then I’d be the one with the angry phone call. The doordash bell sound still haunts me to this day and I will never work for a restaurant that uses doordash again. It sucked.

I'm in no real position to give business advice, but unless you're getting someone to go over each of your doordash orders full time, at that point it might be a better investment to hire 2 fulltime drivers. These companies will get away with as much as they can, as they know fighting them is time consuming and expensive, it's part of their business model once you reach a level of power like that. Additionally as you making that transition from delivery apps to drivers, to try to compensate for the loss in customers you can up your social media presence and have a flyer come with every food app delivery advertising to order from the store directly. Good luck!
The gig economy strikes again!
Hey what’s your restaurants name? I’m trying to find a genuine good restaurant and you seem smart
You could think about creating a website for delivery orders as well, as a costumer I'll always choose ordering online opposed to calling and placing an order.
@hani pope you don't know how to properly threaten a big corp then
I work at a bagel shop that does delivery with DoorDash. There are many reasons why I hate having to make food for DD. First: people seem to order the most ridiculous things which makes them time-consuming to make, which is infuriating most of the time because now that’s one less person making food for the people in line. Second: DD doesn’t know when we’re out of certain items, making it frustrating when someone orders something that we’re out of. Third: the drivers get really impatient when the food isn’t done by the time they arrive to pick it up. Like sorry man, there’s a big ass line of people wanting to order, we simply just didn’t have the time/personnel to put your order together. It also doesn’t help that the drivers usually arrive mere minutes after we receive the info for the order.
GOD, I know your pain man. I have almost these EXACT same problems at my job
You'll be lucky if the driver doesn't use R-slur on you, and they get mad at you for talking back. Like what do you expect me to respond when you treating me like any other customer.
as someone who's now been on both sides, I can now see why the driver is upset when it's not done on time. Most of us are paid per order, so if we're expecting a $5 dollar order to take 10-15 mins total, but then arrive and its not even started, that might be stretched out to 20-30 mins, and now instead of $20, you're making about $5 in an hour. Obviously that's no excuse to use any slurs(definitely crossing the line), but if a driver seems annoyed, that's why. there definitely should be some understanding on both sides, but you could be really screwing someone over if you're prioritizing orders made after the one the driver is coming to pick up. I've started to just leave and assign it to someone else though now if the order is 5+ mins late.;
@@motunuiwoods8615 The thing is I got to much to do for one person. I work alone in the night shift. Which is why I don't appreciate people ordering online. Especially for few items or so many as 17.
Edit: Now my boss is giving me shit for not being able to find an item. I have no idea where he found them, but I am seriously considering in blocking his number if continues to bother me on my days off for something insignificant or small.
dasher here! doordash fucks us all over inthe the way of the last one. they let us know to go get the order like as soon as you place it and if we aren’t there by this very specific time our grade goes down. we get graded on our delivery times so thats why they probably get impatient but me personally i would never 😭 we both stressed why add to it
A friend of mine was lamenting to me that her & her bf couldn't afford to move out of her parents house. I got a whiteboard & we started going thru their finances. They admitted they got door dash or postmates like twice a week. They got doordash while I was there from a wing place less than 3miles away & they both got cars!! I couldn't believe it. It was a huge talking point in that they could afford to save up if they gave up these delivery apps. like Drew said they already upcharge before you get to delivery fees, service fees & tipping the drivers. Even back in 2020 I hated these apps and I had to be drunk af & really wanting chips & salsa before I would use them lol. Delivery services have made working fast food even more than a nightmare than it already is. I get screamed at on a daily basis by rude ignorant drivers because our store gets overflooded with delivery orders and it takes too long to get through them all

Couldn't imagine also doing delivery. And this was at a fast food place that's considered a "nicer" chain too, where we were staffed appropriately 99% of the time.
@@_Super_Hans_ and why are the drivers impatient, screaming and unhinged? because it's fun?
when i worked at starbucks, during peak hours we would literally get orders faster than they were possible to make, because of how long shots take to pull and blending cycles/food warming times. so for 4+ hours, we would just build up a backlog of orders. people would arrive and have to wait an hour for their morning coffee. we were always understaffed as well.

As a business owner Postmates is the worst. Postmates has added our business to their app and will not delete it since their whole thing is delivery for anything and everything. Well that's cool and all but our business information and menu is incorrect and if we want to have control over the information we have to partner with them and that includes us paying money we don't want to pay. We would rather just not be on their app and avoid all the problems since we have started getting calls complaining to us about orders that they placed on postmates that we don't even have on our system. Overall dealing with them has been a headache for the last couple of years.
This happened at a restaurant where I used to work but with Doordash. They added us onto their app without asking, complete with the wrong menu, the wrong prices, and wrong hours. We even had people calling asking where there order was during a city-wide blackout.
@@lulusanyal6095 Yea that's definitely where these apps cross the line into just becoming a nuisance to business owners and their staff.
I work for Philz Coffee and we have to deal with the same bs. Post mates drivers stay going off on us for a situation that’s not in our control.
What aholes. Is it realistic to just not take their and others' like them orders or is the economic hit too high?
@@Blaze6108 for us thankfully we can count the amount of times we get Postmates orders on our hands. But it is annoying when we have to deal with customers getting mad at our staff for missing or messed up orders from their app. We just don't want people harassing our employees for something that's not their fault.
I used UberEats for the first time the other day because I saw they had what seemed like a really nice promotion for $20 off your order, they even called it "have a free meal on us!". So I deliberated over what I wanted for a while, before finally picking a local pizza place. With all the fees and the tip, the full price was apparently around 40 and I ended up paying over 20 even with the promo code. I got a medium sized pizza and a sandwich. I'm never doing that again.

FYI, lots of places now offer ordering on their own site, but then still outsource the delivery to doordash. Like Wendy's. So when 2 times in a row Wendy's didn't deliver half my order, I found out from the driver that they can't even see the items in the order when you place it through Wendy's. So they can't confirm the items. I then tried to get a refund through Wendy's and....well they just ignored me on all customer service platforms and it was impossible to get a response. Hi, Drew! I actually work for DoorDash as my primary income! Another annoying thing about DoorDash is you are HEAVILY incentivized to accept what you’re given. Every order you decline hurts your “acceptance score” and therefore hurts your chances of getting an order in the first place. That makes it very hard to say no to a $3 order with no tip that’ll take 40 minutes to complete.
hey jb! I'm a dasher also and just wanna let you know that your acceptance rate DOES NOT MATTER, no matter how much DD tries to make you believe that it does (unless you are a top dasher, which is only offered in a few cities, then you need 70%). So decline away my friend!
@@kristenweeks3427 I came here to say this! Check out the Decline Now movement. There's a while philosophy behind it, lol. I never take an order less than $8. My acceptance rate is 40-something% and I know people who have acceptance rates around 3%. Don't be afraid to decline!
I do Grubhub as my main source of income. I used to use Door Dash but Grubhub pays me way more money (anything below $9 on Grubhub I won't take while on Doordash in my area $9 is a rare and amazing order they're usually aroud $7). The majority of the Grubhub deliveries I do here are between 13 and 20 payouts
@@jordanweber3381 As a casual user of doordash, is that $8 only the tip or what they pay + tip? If the latter, how much do they pay you outside of the tip?
@@TheRabidDeer When DoorDash offers you an order, the total amount they offer is base pay + tip. They don't tell you which is which until after the order, but you can usually get a rough estimate of which is which by learning how the system works.
Occasionally they don't tell you what the full amount is, and will incentivize you to take it with the promise of more money. Sometimes it's really good ($15 extra), sometimes not so much ($.50 extra). If the tip goes over a certain amount (I wanna say $5.50 or something similar, but I don't remember), that's when they'll do the tease thing.

Funny in CA these companies all tried to say that if we started passing laws that required these people be paid fairly and get offered benefits, they'd have to charge us more and add on an extra fee. Then the law didn't pass.... and they added on extra fees anyway.
Also I did have to start reassessing this in general. When you talk about treating yourself, yeah, that's good. But only if it's actually a treat. When I saw that getting a "value" mean delivered to me from McDonalds was $30, that wasn't a treat. It was punishment for making a bad food decision, and it discouraged me from getting it.
Some things that businesses do to keep customers happy truly stumps me sometimes. I work at a pizza shop and we got an order for 6 XL pizzas, ~$150 worth. Only one minute after we had put all of the pizzas in the oven we get a phone call, it’s the person who placed the order and they said they did it on accident and they want to cancel the order. I know not everyone's in a position to do this, but I've taken the option of refusing to use any of these apps. In Australia the issue we've also had is a lot of delivery people are on bicycles, many of them are immigrants/on temporary working visas, and several of them have been killed. And then the company refuses to pay any compensation because they're technically "independent contractors" and not direct employees. I'd rather not feel like somebody literally risked their life to deliver me food.
I was all with you up until the last sentence. There is literally no way to get food delivered where the delivery person isn't putting their life at risk - all forms of travel are somewhat risky. Car accidents do happen, and even people on foot aren't immune from a traffic accident. One of my old jobs was to ride a bicycle around the CBD with a huge billboard towed behind it, and I had to ride on the roads because there are no bike paths in the CBD - I would have been pretty pissed off if advertisers started telling my boss "well we don't want to use you anymore because what if one of your riders is in an accident and dies?" costing me that job despite the fact my boss was more than reasonable - I was an employee not a contractor, I earned slightly above minimum wage at 18yrs old so I was happy with that, and all the equipment I used was paid for and maintained by my employer rather than myself. That was a pretty good deal for me back then and I am glad I had that job.
The main problem I see with food delivery apps and rideshare apps is they do not offer their "contractors" that seem an awful lot like employees adequate compensation for the risks they are expected to take when performing their job. If Uber were to classify their drivers as employees, pay for the cars and maintenance and pay the employees more than minimum wage then I'd be fine with it.
I take the option of not using delivery apps because i make most my food at home because it tastes much better homemade and i save a bunch of money and making food can be fun sometimes
@@StreakyBaconMan I agree
Delivery apps are luxury but people want it for cheep. Luxury items are normally overpriced. Big companies and western world have always exploiting the labor from developing countries and nothing new.

Having drivers hovering around restaurants until 1 order comes in and then you deliver to that 1 customer is so inefficient it should be a crime. At least pizza companies combine up to 6 deliveries at once for efficiency.
Wait a minute, the restaurant makes the food, the deliverer brings you the food, and the middle man gets almost 50% of the money? What value are they adding?
The app itself that allows deliverers to deliver the food + the marketing for the resturant.
@@trey6583 I agree, it IS too much money but at the end of the day would I have ordered from those places without the app? Probably not. It's way too much money though, how can restaurants survive only making 60%. of what they usually make? I feel for them.
@@Sunshineattacks3 the thing that sucks is that it really does screw restaurants over; their system is highly ineffective and allows for absolutely ZERO communication between anyone, but the blame always gets put on us. Despite needing to put in an estimated time of when the food will be done, dashers will show up whenever, usually within 10 minutes, and then get mad at us that the food isn't done. Sometimes the app won't let us mark something out of stock nor call the customer, so if the dasher happens to take a bit we have to wait until they arrive to inform them.
And honestly, I hate saying this because I believe in tipping delivery people, but except for about 2 people, every single dasher we've got has been incredibly rude and it sucks slaving over food and drinks only for someone who yelled at us to get the tip and doordash's shitty system takes a high commission. It absolutely sucks :/
My experience mostly comes from Doordash so that's what I can speak on, but I will say that when we occasionally get Grubhub orders, you can actually at least mark things out of stock and the delivery people are usually polite, so I wish that was more frequently used. I don't know how they treat their employees nor do I know the difference in how big of a cut they take, though.
@@Sunshineattacks3 yeah I don't expect customers to know all that so I don't hold it against anyone, dw! I think even the drivers aren't aware of the wait time at this point (though that doesn't excuse the rudeness), so it's overall the apps that just... Suck lol. as a delivery driver who works for a chinese restaurant, something I've noticed is doordash will put delivery times as around 45 minutes, we can't adjust that, if you call the store and place your order through us, we can tell you it'll be an hour and a half, but with doordash, it just defaults to 30-45 minutes.
Lol the fact that there's a door dash ad before this video. 🤣
My parents are small restaurant owners and we have gotten so many people upset with us because we refuse to use those delivery apps when they tried taking 20%, it got to the point where doordash put us on the app without our permission with an old menu and it just furthered us from ever going on those little hell raisers.
Oh, 21% yeah, they say for you to sigh up. Then they tell you that it was just a base fee to literally just sign up. If you want to be seen (as in if someone search a general food category, your restaurant will be listed) it goes up to 30 to 40%. Also, as mentioned in the video, people do not call the delivery service for anything! Our food is usually ready in 10 minutes, packed securely in a bag. But we get blamed for late food, cold food, messy food, wrong food and so on. They always demand refund which we can't give cuz we don't even have their info! But at the same time, we understand their frustration cuz you can't never ever get to the customer service. (Or at least that's what people say. )
But we still use the service because it's still better than no customer. It is so frustrating.
Outdated menus, hidden fees, and long wait times is why I never use those apps. Even if the restaurant has delivery, I still pick it up most of the time so it’s still hot and fresh, plus I get my food faster that way.
It's their racketeering method to bully small business owners into working with them. I seen enough of them to say that there are MORE than enough to file several class action lawsuit
Wow they just uploaded an old menu without your restaurant’s consent? That’s so fucked up
I know this is like late in the game but the best thing you can do is use their methods against them. Tell any angry customers that the delivery app doesn't just charge delivery fees. They also add fees onto the food itself. Generally if people feel like they're being cheated they are more likely to turn against the method. Just my two cents ✌️🏻
And DoorDash won’t even give you a refund when your order is f’d up. You get “DoorDash credits.”
Trash.
I can't tell you how many times I've literally not received my order or received the wrong order altogether and NOT gotten my money back. Like thanks for the $5 credit from a $20 order I never got
dang that sucks i literally didn't receive my mac and cheese from an order and they gave me $40 in Door dash credit, but I felt bad because I know that the drivers get shit so I tipped the guy like $15
I've always gotten refunded back to my card. Maybe you didn't make yourself more of an inconvenience. I called them.
Y'all gotta go straight karen 😌💅
And the dashers get blamed for it and given bad ratings when it isnt their fault.
I work for DoorDash and they have “stacked orders” meaning you pick up two orders in the same area and drop them off. Had someone steal an order I was suppose to pick up, but I had no time to wait around because I had to deliver the second order. Called DoorDash and they gave me a penalty and told me if I got another they would suspend my account. ✨

The scenario he described at the beginning with the Chipotle order was my exact first experience with doordash. I immediately ditched the order screen and went to go get it myself. Much money saved, and the meal was delicious!
Whatever happened to treating eating outside as a special event rather than something so trivial? Recently I took my father out to a lovely cafe in Little Italy owned by two sisters in their mid to late 20s for his 70th birthday, and had a fantastic experience. We got two gourmet pasta dishes, six pieces of garlic bread, plus a hot chocolate all for about 40 USD including the tax and tip. More recently like two days ago, I went with my friend to a beautiful Hinduism themed restaurant that was within a 15 minute walk from my place, and had an even better experience wherein the three of us each got to order a perfectly filling, tasty and healthy dinner for 8-10 USD. As a former fast food worker I’ve had nightmarish stories working with Doordash specifically. We’ve had so many complains from customers saying that the food took way too long/is soggy but we just prepared it when we were supposed to. Sometimes the drivers were 20-45 minutes late. And the thing is, I know that *most* of the time it wasn’t even their fault. DD just sent them the notification to pick up the food so long after the app told the customer that their driver had been chosen. Drivers would say they got to the restaurant immediately after they got the notification from DD… which was 30 minutes after we did, and their customer service with partner restaurants was so atrocious it gave me a headache each time I had to deal with it. I’d like to hear some more stories from the delivery drivers point of view because wow I have no idea how that company has at bare minimum a *decent* reputation

It’s even worse for people like me who live in vaugly rural areas, not even rural. It’s like a 45 minute wait for a delivery from a restaurant 10 minutes away by bike, and on top of that the delivery fee is far too expensive sometimes it’s not even available. It’s awful
You forgot to add that everything on the menu is marked up by $1-2. I tried to get my usual order at McDonald's off doordash which is $6.95 at the store and $15+ off the app because you also get a small order fee if your order isn't over like $10
Free delivery they say, then all of sudden the service fee equals the same shit
I will believe anything Teddy from P4 tells me.
The real cost is when your car takes all of that wear and tear that you'll never get back. Sure you can go for surge pay and never at base pay/no tip deliveries but the cost of that maintenance will overtake your earnings. I have recently given up on delivery apps and have gone back to warehousing. I was doing this because of my life situation but eventually I got tired of all the wear on my car to deliver shit for people and on top of that the rising cost of gas I just had to give up on these apps.
Wanted to add this. I used to work for a restaurant that used DoorDash and DoorDash specified in their contract with the restaurant that any time a new door dash order popped up on their fancy shmancy tablet we got we were to prioritize the DoorDash order over EVERY OTHER ORDER which included to stop taking an in person order to input the DoorDash order because if the bell was ringing for more than a MINUTE it would jeopardize us losing the contract and paying them a penalty for not complying. Everyone hated it :D
Also, does anyone else find it kind of insulting for Doordash to say they're "America's kitchen" when they don't do literally any of the work??

5:28 it's too bad tipping with cash often results in your order not being delivered optimally because the driver sees "no tip"
I briefly for four months of my life worked as a Papa John’s delivery boy when I was barely at a high school. I legitimately have no idea how any adult does that to pay their mortgage or bills. At the time I was only getting paid 450 an hour plus tips. And on average I would maybe only deliver to around seven houses a shift. On average getting a tip of three dollars or less. I remember every month having to borrow money from my dad to pay the bills until I just said the hell with that and got a different job.
Hi, Uber eats driver here! Definitely tip in cash if you can, it makes our day since it’s tax free and we know that Uber won’t get to secretly keep any of that money! Also, if your food arrives to your door later than you expected, it’s likely because the restaurant was very busy and took a long time to prepare it. We don’t get paid for the extra time waiting at the restaurant, so please be patient and don’t take out your anger on your courier 😊
Thank you so much! I had no idea that they did this, and as someone who lives alone in a big city and is usually not comfortable with walking longer distances alone, I usually just use Uber eats. I’ll definitely give cash tips from now on :)
Only caveat with cash tip is us as drivers may not accept the order because we see it as an initially low paying order. But cash is great when it comes to taxes
@@Larissawesome Download Grubhub too!!! We need more orders. Currently waiting for one 😣
im from a country where tips aren't the most common thing, but I do try to tip with every order. However tipping in cash isn't really possible right now as Id rather not be handling cash during a pandemic. Is there any way else to make sure you guys are getting paid for your hard work
Makes sense since the same exact logic applies to servers/waiters!
Grub hub took our menu without permission, so people order things that don’t exist through them and then customers get mad at us when we explain. It’s messed up
YESSSSSS DUDE OMFG, people think we have rolled tacos at a wing shop /^: and them get mad at me for not having what they want.
That happened where I work too! I tend bar in a hotel restaurant, and we changed our menu 6 months ago when new management took over. I get Grub hub and DoorDash trying to place orders from our old menu. Then the customer gets pissed at me. Like its my fault, as the BARTENDER, that we don't sell quesadillas. Ugh
Same thing happened at me at my old job, we hated that they ever asked permission and kept just messing up orders with the wrong menu while we were at our busiest hours
@Genevieve Fricklas Hate to break it to you, but Slice and Googling restaurants in your city is not just a NY thing (Seamless is, but there are plenty of other functional city-specific apps). I've lived in the city and in other cities in the U.S., and there are plenty of restaurants I can Google and order through their preferred method (as Drew mentioned) or pizzerias I can use Slice for.
Ugh, the last restaurant I worked at had an ongoing war with Postmates. We were not connected with any delivery service (on purpose, because it was a ramen place and that stuff doesn't deliver well), but Postmates would have their drivers call in for take-out, pretending to be regular customers, and then not inform us they were with Postmates until they arrived and tried to pay with a Postmates card. The kicker was that Postmates didn't even have our actual menu...they let customers "suggest" and order items they thought we might have, forcing us servers to get into actual arguments with stressed-out, pissed-off drivers who would show up looking for items we never, ever had on our menu. We called Postmates more than once demanding they remove us from their restaurant list, and they always claimed they couldn't (wtf??). I'm out of the restaurant business for now, but I will absolutely never order through Postmates because, wow, fuck that company.
I work in food service and you'd be surprised at how easy it is for people to steal orders, or grab the wrong order, or steal *from* orders. We used to have a big shelf where the orders sat, until we noticed people would just walk in and grab them, pretending to be a driver. We took down the shelf and started keeping food behind the counter, and suddenly we started seeing people come in, go to the restroom, and then leave, more so than usual. Our theory is that thieves will go into a restaurant, see that there's no food to steal, and then pretend like they just popped by to use our toilet instead of conspicuously turning around and leaving.
We thought that was the end of it, but then we saw an increase in drivers coming in to ask for orders that had already been picked up. Turns out that drivers would come in, ask for an order, and then leave without telling the app they grabbed it. I don't know whether or not they can cancel an order or if the app just reassigns it after a certain amount of time or what, but regardless we figured out drivers were using that method to steal food. Now, when someone comes to pick an order up, I have to go through the awkward process of making them confirm they grabbed the order before I'll hand it to them. Even so, corporate inexplicably no longer allows us to seal bags with a sticker, so drivers can still just steal items from the bag and then blame us when the customer complains that items are missing.
All of this could be avoided if we just had our own delivery drivers we could hold accountable, but instead we have to contend with random schmucks who we'll likely never see again. It's unbelievably frustrating.
RE: DoorDash stealing tips (around 5 minute mark). I accepted a Shop & Deliver Order for $24 recently. The order involved shopping for 30 items. I took it bc it was a slow day and I knew I could finish it in an hour, worst case scenario. I finished it in half an hour. After delivery, I was shown how the pay was split up… DoorDash paid $4, while the rest was from a $20 tip. I’ve seen a lot of bad orders. It's better, I think, to tell the customer "you know what? Either you make an order worthy of our time or we don't provide delivery because our delivery drivers are busy getting profitable purchases delivered" rather than put a ridiculous fee on a single sandwich order. At least that way you make the customer more conscious of what the policy of the company is. Honestly I don't know. In my country (Greece) you just don't pay for delivery costs, just the food you order. However, since the restaurant is employing the drivers, they get a monthly salary which can be less profitable for both the drivers and the establishment itself.
Last year I ordered a papa john’s pizza on postmates while on my college campus. The person who picked up my order was on a bicycle, and when I checked the app to see how close she was I noticed to icon was stuck at an intersection. Some time later I got a text from her saying she got into an accident and broke her arm and that her brother was going to finish the order. I tried telling her to not worry about the pizza because HOLY SHIT get to the hospital!!!! Regardless she gave the pizza to her brother who would finish the trip by car.
I walked around campus trying to figure out where he was, and the app wasn’t updating a location, it was still on that intersection. I’m pretty sure she didn’t hand over her phone to him, just the pizza. I saw a lot of cars driving around and I had no idea which one was him. Yeah just a minute in and that crazy up charge that they have for the delivery fee is one reason I never order from those apps. Another reason is that almost every single time me or anybody in my family has ordered from them they somehow show up with a portion of the food missing every damn time. They can't even do their job right. So do they eat the food or just not double-check to make sure they actually grabbed the two bags of food as opposed to just one.
