SwitchUp - Hry
Hey SwitchUp Family. Pleased to finally play through this one, let's see if it lives up to the hype. Mark
Love your videos, but in this case, I want to add something that might change the "value" score for some players
The game is much longer than 6-10 hours
.
SPOILERS
.
.
.
.
The credits are a trick, they roll at around 1/3 of the game and then it transforms into a different genre, it stops being a somewhat traditional Metroidvania and becomes a more puzzle-like thing. It's not a second playthrough or post-game, but something more enigmatic! The metroidvania part acts almost like a tutorial of sorts, getting players in the correct mindspace to start finding the puzzles for themselves. And some of these puzzles are insane and sooooo creative!
Animal well is not 5 hours. I'm 30 hours in and I will say the first ending was a false flag
ya i was gonna say the same thing.. im about 25 hours in and still have soo much more to unlock and discover
PS Love all your content. You guys are the real deal.
Yup yup yup. Endgame is not a tack on to extend playtime, it’s the real game!
@@benrand8961 nah it's absolutely a tack on. That isn't a bad thing! It's great for people who prefer hunting for collectibles and secrets, but to say that the post-credits is the 'real game' is like saying finding all the korok seeds is the real game in BotW. I think most people could and should stop Animal Well after the credits roll, the post-credit hype is out of control
I think the 100% is a false flag.
The sound is my favorite part of this game and possibly my favorite sound design in a game ever. It’s prob because there is no music to behold.
I'm pretty mediocre at platforming and pixel art hurts my eyes, but holy canolli, this looks absolutely AMAZING! ♥ Can't agree with 16/20 for graphics; I don't even like pixel art and I can tell the art direction is superb.
I wish it had mysterious lore to uncover. Like in hollow knight where you found out more about this fallen civilization. It would add another layer to the game.
Hmm I guess that is maybe missing, yes...
Or just hasn't been deciphered yet😀
I might be in the minority of people who ultimately felt that game (Hollow Knight) is overrated. Loved the atmosphere....but the illusion of progression, really ground my gears. Buying my own map, compass, pins etc. That isn't progression... it's busy work.
I was waiting for lore to drop in…
Agree
@@user-kj9oz7lb8swhen did you buy a map???
I love Animal Well. For my almost-50-year-old self, this reminds me of playing single-screen platformers on 8-bit computers such as the ZX Spectrum, e.g. Manic Miner or Dizzy. One thing I want to highlight is that Animal Well is 84 MEGAbytes - in an era where games regularly reach hundreds of gigabytes while offering half of this game’s content at best.
I haven't played a game that I refused to look up any assistance/walkthroughs on in decades (maybe the OG Resident Evil 1?), but this game just makes me want to discover everything myself and appreciate the ride. Incredible game.
I don’t agree about it being incredible.
@@ts7844okay?
This game is INCREDIBLE. The puzzles are out of this world. 6 hours??? Sure, to see the credits. But there is way, WAY more than this "post" game.
This is one of the best games I've ever played.
Love it when an indie dev just knocks it out of the park. Your absolutely right Mark, big devs tend to have to play it safe, so it lovely to see someone take a risk and hit a home run
Yeah it was incredible. Definitely up there with fez and tunic as far as mysterious puzzler. There’s even easter eggs for both games. The moment I figured out most items have a hidden mechanics, my mind was blown. I’m at the post game now and holy crap, some crazy hidden stuff. I’ve spent 18 hours so I don’t know how you guys discovered the other ‘2 layers’ in 6 hours…. It took the community a lot of work and time to find what they have so far. So yeah I don’t think many people have 100 % this yet, let alone in that short of a time. Id say it’s a 15 - 20 hour game if you want to do everything. And even then, I still think there’s undiscovered stuff yet to be found.
As a fan of puzzle games I'd say Animal Well does very well for itself. After the credits though, things get pretty murky when it's revealed that there are more than just the eggs to collect.
Sometimes I would come upon a solution that didn't seem to do much of anything. But after looking it up, there a whole host of things to do that outright are not signposted at all.
With enough grit and time, all of these puzzles could be solved on your own, but one requires 50 unique pieces from different player's games. That's nice for the journalists in their discord putting it together or an effort on forums on launch day. But in a year, when Joe Shmoe decides to crack down on the puzzles of Animal Well, he'll be invariably disappointed that after all that effort, he'll have to just google the answer.
I think the creator believed all of the late game puzzles would be too complicated to solve for a single individual without community effort
this exactly. As far as I'm concerned the credits roll at the end of the game, and everything after that is a bonus community exercise.
Well you don’t have to complete every single puzzle. Play the game and enjoy it .
The whole point is to discover it yourself. The bunny does a good job of showing the average player they can capture all the animals. You literally go to the moon in this game & homie claims he has 100%ed it😂
Scariest ghost cat ever
When I ran off the screen to get away, breathed a quick sigh of relief, and then…
It's a dog lol cats don't hang their tongues out of their mouths and chase frisbees.
Also the area has dogs and dog statues everywhere
@@KidBowsur it’s a cat cause you summon a dog to chase it away
That devious white cat is going to haunt my dreams tonight…this game feels wonderful and terrifying at the same time, definitely something I need to try!
It’s supposed to be a dog, but I agree it looks 100% like a cat.
When I realized it’s killing me unintentionally just trying to grab the frisbee that got me. I’m terrified running from him and he just wants to play catch 😅
@@happyspaceinvader508 thanks for the information, I was so sure it was a cat 🤣 it’s so scary anyway!

As we near mid-year will we see a SwitchUp video on your top 3-5 games of 2024 so far and 1 personal avoid?
After seeing Toyko Cooking in your last video, I would be keen to see a compilation video for the best "job" simulators on Switch, just individual jobs not the overarching management of a hotel or a farm, eg games like Lawn Mower Simulator qualifies but Farming Simulator doesn't. Perhaps there may not be enough games for this but if not maybe an updated list on the best management sims since Imagine Earth came out and your last compilation was over a year ago. Anyway, just some thoughts, thanks SwitchUp!
Absolutely loved this one! I find I’m always chasing those “oh damn, THAT is clever” moments in games, and Animal Well has its fair share. I do wish it gave you a bit more of a steer towards the end of the egg hunt though, like even just what screen to go to roughly. Ended up using a guide just as a pure time save
I don't even play my switch that much but I still come here for the great reviews. Keep up the good work lads!
Looks really interesting. Was waiting for this review, added it to wishlist after your initial video.
I love how the Nyxi joycons match with the aesthetics of the game. That's some nice eye candy right there.
They're Funstock these ones with the lights. Mark
I love what you guys do on this channel but just wanted to add one tidbit: 6 hours is how long it takes to finish the main game which is roughly a quarter of what you can get out of this. This is very much an iceberg game and because of that id score value at least an 18
Is the physical a Limited Run release only?
it was a good stepping stone. Definitely not the best game, but one the best atmospheres for sure. I definitely have my gripes with it.
Definitely adding this to my list. Cheers!
Definitely getting this at some point, hopefully it will be on sale when I’ve actually got time 😊
For sure. Mark
Spoiler, yes its really good. How do i know even though i've never played it? Well... because everyone say it's good. 😂
Hahaha Yeah for sure. I'd say they might have got a little OTT. Mark
I've beaten the game and the fact that I'm excited to search through places I've already assumed I thoroughly explored says a lot.
I have 1 candle too light and about 20 eggs left she figure new things out never gets old
Genius, you are!😂
@@SwitchUpYt😂😂😂 he is saying that YOU didn’t play it.
Hey SwitchUp, you REALLY do not need clickbait ❤

Hey boys thanks for the review. Picking it up on PS5 and playing with the portal.
Looks like fun. gonna wait for the Limited Run release tomorrow though so i can get my hands on a physical copy
I think you were off on the time to complete. You can "beat" the game in 5-10 hrs, but to get every egg and all the layer 3 collectibles, and see the true ending, its 10-30 hrs.
Reviewers mentioning Billy Basso and his achievement and hard work before uttering Dunkey’s name challenge: failed yet again. Good review otherwise, but man I’m sick of people acting like Dunkey had really anything to do with this game. Say Billy’s name first. Mention how hard he worked on it. Give Billy credit!
He gets way more airtime in the video than Dunkey to be fair I usually mention publisher first and then dev gets the entire review. Mark
without him, this game would have never sold as much as it did
The value of this game is sky high in my opinion but heavily dependent on how unique it is. I have never been more excited for the post game content and it truly delivered. I would highly recommend not consulting any guide until you reach about 60 eggs and at that point only do it if you really feel stuck. If you have friends playing this game simultaneously I think it will be a truly magical experience.
I really enjoyed this game a lot. I’m sure it would look pretty amazing on a 4K OLED!
Really enjoying this one. The puzzle elements are well done and just difficult enough at times to make me feel smart for figuring them out without being too difficult to discourage me from progressing or googling solutions. The atmosphere is perfect - I love all the random animal noises that are just on the edge of being creepy. It’s better than I expected for sure.
This looks right up my street. I think the visuals are something special and definitely pushing the 19/20 mark. Looking forward to getting lost in this.
I'm 12 hrs in and figuring out everything organically. I still don't have the Frisbee thing or know how to get it. I seen it and got killed by the cat ghost thing and haven't been able to find it since..
Have slinky. Wand, whistle. First flame thing. I feel like I'm about half done.. Although I have only about 1/4-1/2 of the apparent things done. Like one of 4 flames? Lots to figure out still.
The first ending is just scratching the surface. It opens up so much more on the second run through. Getting all the items. Upgrading items. Getting all the eggs. Finding all the rabbits.
Each time you think you are done it throws more at you to do.
I've put in nearly 40 hours so far. Done 3 of the 4 layers of the game. Absolutely loved it. I'd go so far as saying I enjoyed it more than TOTK. And I really enjoyed TOTK!! But this one was something else.
If you loved solving those little puzzles in old school 2D Zelda dungeons then this game is for you. Can't praise it enough!!
I’m so excited for this!!!!
"The frisbee is one of the first items you'll get"
Wait what😂 I didn't get that until about my 4th item haha
I feel like watching this even with light touches will lead to spoilers I don't want. Def gonna pick it up and want a fresh head for it
Sound's really nice. Ill be grabbing it at some point.
Your right, after the 1st hour I had an urge to go back to Rainworld, they released a dlc recently so win win.
I love the scanline effect used in this game, wish more retro inspired indie games used this.
Blasphemous 1 & 2 have it
I actually got the disc last 😅 There was a bug at first. I still managed to progress though
Wow that's pretty impressive haha, I would have been lost without that thing! Mark
I’ve played a good 3 hours and never found a disc/frisbee
@@happyspaceinvader508 Are you sure you got the latest update? The disc didn't show in my inventory, but after updating it did.
Same! So it WAS a bug then, huh? Ugggh, that explains a lot...
finished the first two endings, and I would agree with most of the points in this video. It's definitely an interesting, unique-looking game, but for as much atmosphere and visual oddity it had, it couldn't really compete with the ambitious vision of something like HK. Also, a lot of the enjoyment on this game is going to come down to how much you enjoy solving puzzles/codes (similar to Fez), so if you're looking for an epic series of boss fights and/or levelling up from items, you might end up feeling underwhelmed. Still, I had fun, and would happily play a sequel.
IMO if you don't look up hints online and hunt for eggs this is more like a 20-25 hour game and even longer if you want to uncover some of the deeper layers, which changes the value proposition.
I just impulse bought Narita Boy (on sale) coz I fancied something retro and synthy and neon
Not played it yet, but I kinda wish I'd waited now!
This looks really good
I'm excited to get my copy in October/ November. It's hard being a physical media purist sometimes

I almost passed this one up, but I am really enjoying the gameplay. The music creeps me out though! haha
This looks really interesting. $32 Canadian is more than fair for 6 to 10 hours of good solid gameplay. I think I'll be checking this one out.
I think he is off on time to complete. I'm over 20 hours and have not done everything in the game yet. If you actually solve the puzzles yourself and don't use a guide, it will take longer than 10 hrs.
It's a 25hr game to get to complete layer 2. Layers beyond this are for the crazy people or community to solve.
OOOHHHHH, when you played some of the sound effects, I recalled they look much alike Donkey Kong Country, specially the jump SFX
Suggest you give Lorelei and the Laser Eyes a go too. Would be interested to see what you make of it!
Hmm looks like a stress free version of hollow knight
Plenty of stress to be had here.

I love the game And the review. I've only got 28 eggs so I'm only scratching surfaces here. But very addictive. I can't argue with your take on it at all. Nice work, y'all!
I got the disc near the 2nd boss, but I got the bubble wand early and abused the hell out of it
The bubble wand is so much fun. I spent way too long bubble jumping up the tower at the top of the map just to discover... well, I was satisfied I'd made it at least
Would love to hear more from Billy Basso but, frustratingly, he just waggles his tail and sings poor quality talking heads covers. Such an enigma.
No way is this a 6 hour game. It took me 15 hours to reach the credits, and I haven't even got half the eggs, or all of the items etc.
To me around 5 hours 40 and then the extra to do the rest 😅. Review pace is a real thing though to be fair. Mark
@@SwitchUpYt Yeah, I imagine review time constraints probably make you blast through sections average gamers would spend a bit more time on. Thanks for what you do, you guys are the best.
@@SwitchUpYt Just to clarify (and with no criticism implied)... What did "review pace" actually entail in this case? Checking solutions or you're just dang good and didn't mess around? :-)
This game has some of my favourite items in any metroidvania. The way most of them have multiple uses is so great.
Funny how a single person delivers something more appealing to the players compared to an entire crew of people and bags of money.
Unpopular opinion: I really did not enjoy this game!! :(
I was so excited for this. Excited for Dunkey, supporting his first project, for the single developer doing it, I bought it dull price day 1. It had everything I love in video games - pixel art, 2D metroidvania, indie game, weird/mysterious atmosphere, whatever.
From the get-go, I really wasn't enjoying the game. A lot of the puzzles require you to spot tiny little things in the already dark and pixelated screen. I found myself backtracking so much because I kept getting lost, the game doesn't tell you a single thing about what to do or where to go (it took me several hours to even realize there were 4 spots on the map I should I guess try and reach). The bubble wand jump was sooo frustrating for me. It's like the game gave you this awesome ability to have infinite jumps, but the use was so extremely clunky for me - it involves this really weird almost frame-perfect sliding motion on controller to land on a bubble, jump off, cast another bubble, land perfectly on it, and stay facing the same direction. I fell off soooo many times from the tiniest input mistake, meaning I had to re-do this super long and tough jumping motion just to reach a platform that you needed. Like that sea horse bubble part? Oh my gosh, it took me like 20 minutes just to get it right!
The dog mechanics seem super weird and unfair and I'd get stun locked so many times and die. Then I'd die at some part that felt super cheesy and unfair and lame and then I'd respawn sooooo far back to where I last saved. So much backtracking. There were so many parts I had to look up where I realized there was noooo way I would've ever found out for myself. Like the flute helps you fast travel? I had the flute for hours and hours and I never once saw any signs or hints anywhere that by pressing them it made you fast travel!
Overall, I found myself just playing out of spite. It's been so weird and jarring seeing all the perfect 10/10 scores from literally every channel I see, when I was honestly so frustrated and over the game from the beginning.
I love supporting local, indie devs, it's Dunkey's first published project and I've been a fan for years, and I absolutely would pay for the game on day 1 again just to support. But for me, I really didn't enjoy this game and was really disappointed that it felt so clunky, needlessly difficult, and unfair.
Would love to hear other thoughts. Maybe the game just isn't for me. There were parts I really loved, like the aesthetic, the refreshing attempts (key word there) at revitalizing the genre, and how it was all made by one guy. But I'm curious if anyone else felt these things. Thanks for reading!
Games are subjective. You make some interesting points. Mark
1.Most of the eggs that can be found with the bubble wand only require using a single bubble to find. Jump on the single bubble then jump off(a double jump). Later on, when you master the technique, you can chain jump and get the harder eggs. (Just press both buttons at the same time, it usually works. You get an upgraded one later, so you do not need to "master" that technique).
2. It's simple, Don't touch the dogs. You get like 4 different items to distract them with so you can safely pass.
3. Animal well is a Metroidvania, so of course there will be backtracking, and hard to find areas. Your complaint about backtracking Is like buying a racing game, then not being happy because you have to race in the game. Most games in this genre use empty spaces on the map to show where you have not visited. In Metroid and Animal Well, if it's not a solid line on the map, you have not explored that area. So look at your map, and if any rooms have little off shoots that don't have a solid line closing them off, explore them more throughly.
4. This games requires you to pay attention to every detail. After getting the flute and discovering the warp room, you go down the ladder in the warp room, and there is a fish moving in a weird pattern at the bottom of the screen?. He jumps right twice, left twice, down twice, and up twice. I wonder what that means?? Probley nothing, this game sucks, it does not spell everything out for you!
Sorry you dident like it, but I feel like you thought the game was going to be something else. I personally love this game! Have a good one 👍
I looked for the game on my series s but it wasn't there is it on other platforms except xbox
Great review
This and vampire survivors have been taking over my world.
This is the type of game that's screaming for a free demo
I absolutely love the game. I personally connect the high score to the fact that the art is absolutely stunning without a lot in terms of textures and the contrast between 2d pixel art and 3d lighting . The fact that one person developed this across 7 years if I’m not mistaken, makes it well worth my money and all the praise.
I want more games like this that are not afraid of taking risks and being different. This is the main reason I love the indie scene today much more than the AAA scene. Hell even the AA scene is way more Interesting these days.
Loved the review mate! Cheers
Seems I need to get on this. Only heard good things 😅
It's very fun, will wait for a sale though I'd say. Or grab that physical when it arrives. Mark
Crazy how something so low budget can get perfect scores almost across the board. Super refreshing
I can understand your point of semi negitive views. I randomly discovered it before all the talk on the internet. Didn’t even know what it was. was surprised how much enjoyed it at first. Do enjoy that genre, but still. Looked pretty boring. As I’m playing though. ending up loving it. Seeing it to be very a positively slow paced and rather relaxing game in that genre. Having some simple satisfying puzzles, awesome sounds and atmosphere. A very cute character too :)
Another game where I get lost in the first 15 minutes, miss some vital mechanic (wait frisbee, what?) and retread the same ground for literally hours
At least rogue-likes have the decency to kill you 🤦♂️
I personally don't see the appeal of animal well, but am glad to hear that others are getting their money's worth.
cheers.
I finished it. Very impressive for a single developer game. But even among indie games, there are better options out there.
Really great game, the majority of playtime is post game. even after beating the game and managing to find 59 of the 65 eggs I finally give up. Im missing one upgrade too so im guessing the eggs im missing are tied to whatever that upgrade is. I dont look up stuff so just know if your trying to go in blind and figure it all out yourself this game is awesome but man some of the end game stuff is tricky.
Looks like fun, and beautiful.
Great review. I always get a bit suspicious when games so much hype. Almost think sometimes its bad for games because then expectations go really high and some people end up disappointed
I think this game is special and the fact that one dude made it is insane and let's not forget the composer, so two people 😂.
Genuine question: Why is the review so late? Did you get a review copy? I really enjoy this channels thoroughness in its scoring system and anticipated this review as well as balatro. At any rate I agree. This is a very 8/10 game and not the masterpiece that's in the discord. I felt fez was this and more 12 years ago.

It was ok. The atmosphere was awesome but I can't really out my finger on why I was slightly disappointed in it
It really looks like a game I’ll enjoy. It’s really priced itself out of my interest for now. The older I get the happier I am to wait for things… also because I have so much backlog from watching these videos already ❤
Rain world is amazing, even tho I’m shot at it.
There are entire heavily detailed pdfs out there on how the controls work. It’s insanely more complicated than you expect, and I’m crap at it lol
Thanks for the honest review. I wish the main character was a bit more detailed. I'm not a fan of 4 bit graphics or whatever but the lighting looks fascinating. I'll wait for a more than 10% sale that they currently have.
Yes having fallen for the hype and purchased it. I regret paying more than £5 for this game.

Yes. It really is that good.
Very fun time for sure. Mark
Love, love, love it.
No idea who Dunkey is but get the feeling that’s a good thing
This game was crazy good.
To me it's better than Hollow Knight. Pure puzzlevania without stressful soulslike elements. Exploration, immersion and wonder
I thought it was great. I only started getting burnt out at around 25hrs looking for the last eggs. Plus I missed a match and had to search forever to find it.
this is the kinda game u should play alot more of before you review. You can roll the credits somewhat quickly, but if you only played 10 hours there is alot more to discover. i think if you reviewed this game before you heard the hype you would have scored it higher. i give it 100/100

Wait, you can jump on the frisbee?
This game is easily one of my games of the year. Love everything about it. Indie games have been killing it and AAA dev/pubs need to rethink all it is they do.
Definitely. A very impressive first outing for the publisher this one. Mark
Over hyped.
@@ts7844 think you and I have very different definitions of over hyped. Closest I’ve seen to an indie title being over hyped was launch day No Man’s Sky. Here’s an example of something that’s been over hyped recently; Hellblade 2. Something that’s barely a game and been hyped up for years.
People are hyped about Animal Well because of what it offers. That’s not over hype, it’s difference in preference. Not everybody games the same way, or for the same reasons.
Yup, it is 😌
I was really excited for Animal Well, but ended up being quite disappointed😢 Yes, the game is atmospheric and clever, but there is absolutely no substance to it - no story, no meaning to anything, no theme, etc. I didn’t enjoy solving the game’s puzzles simply for their own sake (and I’m honestly a bit surprised that so many people are so okay with it).
6 to 10 hours is the perfect length for a game.
Maybe if you’re a casual, but not for most gamers.
Way more than that
im almost 20 hours in to get the real ending, i think the game has justified the price
@@user-xr6gb7es1n Most of the hardest games are of that sort of length though? Ghost and Goblins is a couple of hours. Adventure of Link is about 10. Battletoads, 5ish.

I give up. I cannot get a single flame, I get lost constantly while still marking the parts I haven't done. I have the flute, yoyo, Frisbee, bubble Wand, slinky, etc. I loved the first 5h very much, the puzzles were a blast and I liked the platforming. Now it seems like I need to comb the map for little nooks here and there to proceed, I cannot look up any solution because it's like "the room with the weasels in them" or "where is the room with the cat ghost". I think I became too dumb after playing AAA games.
so! this little baby here decided to keep pushing and has now completed the game with 24 eggs collected. Did I completed the game fully? nah. Did I enjoy the 9,5h I've played? yes!

I absolutely love this game. Definitely my game of the year so far. I’ve just got to the credits and I can’t wait to keep going.. I know there is loads more- some people have said the first play through is about 20% of the final game!- so am relishing getting into all that.
Little addition to that- I’ve now got an additional two items and the game keeps getting better! More mysterious, more intriguing.. I love it!
