- In this video I wrap up all of the left over work on my Mercedes Benz GL320 Bluetec (x164) truck. I install Hella Supertones, polish the headlights, repaint the bumpers, install a roof rack and light bar and refinish the black leather steering wheel.
Here's the kit I bought for the steering wheel (in Canada) - it worked great and I highly recommend it!

I did this off-road/overland thing with my ML. Rooftop tent was a pain, goodyear duratracs were noisy, and at the end of the day, although it can get through a lot of stuff and is very capable off road, it can’t do it for prolonged period of time without major suspension damage. 10 miles on corrugated road and it’s literally shaking itself to pieces. There’s a reason best offroaders are body on frame and now I know.
I have since bought a sprinter and turned that into a camper which we adore and the ML is back as a daily.
Haha - yeah you're right of course... this project was more for fun - I don't really do any offroading... my actual goal with this was to take it offroading once which I still haven't done...If I do end up keeping the truck, I'll likely take it off daily duty and just use it as a tow rig and weekend overlander for when my kids get older and I can take them out into the bush
Was hoping to see GLander with the big tires. But more looking forward to the S4 Cab! Happy New Year dude!
Interestingly enough - the rims are the problem - not the tires... can't fit smaller than 18s because of the brakes and that limits the tire choices... basically I'm stuck with one tire size with 18" rims and that's if I find a good set of rims... which I did but then sold 🤦♂️

I have a 2007 X164. I have a skinny spare tyre that fits under the floor in the trunk. But interestingly underneath where you have a large cavity between your rear mufflers, thats where my Airmatic air tanks are...
I have 3 tanks that run crossways that hold the air for the suspension. I wonder where the tanks are on your bluetech model then?
hmmm I haven't seen the aux tank to be honest but I am working on a stand-alone system with aux tanks and compressors that would allow me to inflate much faster than the OEM system
How did you fix the transmission limp mode after episode 5? Thanks for making these great videos!
Hey I didn't document it very well because it was a bit frustrating and I pretty much caused it myself... the limp mode was caused by a broken ISM - the module on the side of the transmission that changes the gears... what happened was when I put the engine in, I started it and shifted gears while the car was on the lift and the drive shaft was disconnected... that's technically OK but while the transmission is running, the wheels aren't moving so when I shifted to park, the module thought the car is stationary and tried to put the running transmission into park, which broke the lock out...as a result the module basically stopped working and I had to replace it... that in itself is a problem because it is coded to the car so if you buy a second hand one it needs to be erased and programmed and I had to buy an Autel programmer to do it... funny enough - I did a very similar mistake on the white ML you see at the end of EP5 and had to replace its ISM as well🤦♂️
