  • INFP, what makes you YOU? What makes the INFP personality tick? What are the building blocks of the INFP personality type? In this video I'll explain the INFP personality type inside and out - from their cognitive functions Introverted Feeling, Extraverted Intuition, Introverted Sensing, and Extraverted Thinking to their strengths, weaknesses, and unique gift to the world.
    INFP Cognitive Functions:
    1. Introverted Feeling (Fi)
    2. Extraverted Intuition (Ne)
    3. Introverted Sensing (Si)
    4. Extraverted Thinking (Te)
    5. Extraverted Feeling (Fie
    6. Introverted Intuition (Ni)
    7. Extraverted Sensing (Se)
    8. Introverted Thinking (Ti)

    FAQ:
Have you heard of the 8-function model?
Yes, I was introduced to the 8-function model in approx. 2015/16, and I have been working on Ti in my personal life which is not in my top 4. My "Inside Out" series touches on it, and I plan to dive deeper in a future series.
Have you heard of socionics, enneagram, tritype, vultology, 4 sides of the mind, interaction styles, OPS, or CPT?
Yes to all. I have a couple collabs and videos on my channel about enneagram and socionics. The other systems I've heard of and studied on a surface-level, and own/have read books on many of the above topics. For one reason or another, none of these topics have interested me enough to discuss regularly on the channel.
    Stereotyping:
Any time I say a behavioral example of how a type shows up like "I tend to notice a lot of ISTJs with fitbits" this is to ground the theoretical concept for viewers who have repeatedly asked me to give behavioral examples and to make content less abstract and confusing. However, any time I stray from motives and transfer to behavior, it will lose universal application. Any time I give an example like this, it is not an absolute, it is not a rule, that behavior is not exclusive to that type, that behavior is not the exclusive manifestation of a type's motives, not everyone or even most of the type might do that thing; but it is simply a one-time example of how the motivations that ISTJs share could manifest - not how they must manifest.
In addition, different motivations aside from Si-Te motivations could also prompt someone to get a fitbit, so this behavior alone cannot be used to type someone. In my day to day life, I do not see people with a fitbit and therefore declare them an ISTJ. Any example I give did not come from inductive reasoning which gets applied universally like "I saw 3 ISTJs who wear fitbits therefore all ISTJs have fitbits." In addition these examples can be backed up deductively with Carl Jung's and Van Der Hoop's writing like "Si is finely attuned to sense organs"; "Te likes outcomes and metrics" "therefore an example could be, but is not limited to, ISTJs wearing fitbits, especially when used to measure sense organs."
I have been working on Ti and thus curbing misunderstandings on this front, but in case I say something contrary to this belief, it was due to sloppy Te langauge (or it was a non-serious joke) and not because I believe differently.

To all my fellow INFP's out there (speaking as a 67 year old veteran of 'da feels') hitch yourself to the cause that resonates, whatever you do. You already know that money isn't everything and people's reactions to your advocacy will vary... it comes down to "so what!", right? When you're both patiently and lovingly involved in your cause, you will shine. Thank you for engaging.

I don't know if it will help my fellow INFPs, but I started turning my poems and letters into animated videos on CZcams. One of the reasons I did this was because I thought it was a fun way of sneaking poetry into people's lives. After all, not many people will buy my poetry books but they might watch a very short animated video on CZcams. I mention it here because I thought it might inspire you to do your own channel. I continue to do my channel because my inner 10 year old loved to watch art shows and now it gets to play with an animated program called Doodly. It makes me smile and chuckle, which is as good a reason to do something in my book even if it makes little logical sense.
While I can't draw by hand and many of my videos are probably pretty weird to most people, I thought that even if they are a bit naff to you, they might inspire you. After all, I write books because I thought the ones I read were rubbish, so why not create that CZcams channel if you think what i'm producing is nonsense. I mean, if I'm prepared to upload the kind of thing I'm creating, I'm certain you could produce something that's of much better quality. In short, be bold my fellow INFPs. You'll probably find people won't judge you as harshly as you think they will. You may even find some relief in their indifference.

At the end, you said, “…what you are doing matters, it makes a difference.” That resonated with me. To me, my life would be wasted, if I didn’t feel that I made a difference. I get lost when I try to define or put metrics on any difference I could be making, which leaves me wondering, if I’m imaging it. It was encouraging that you said those words. Thank you!

    *_Personally:_*
    1. *We are a very unique stack.*
As you mentioned, with *introverted feeling* together with *extroverted intuition*, we are very much shaped by our past (*introverted sensing*).
1.5. *Imagine not having the best upbringing*
_(in my case, a foster home filled with strong, sensing, thinking, judging types)_
Every bad experience an INFP goes through, they vividly experience with their *introverted sensing* together with their *introverted feeling* . It’s kind of no joke to say that we relive these moments as if they happened today, every day, until we learn to let them go. What makes it even harder to let go is our *extroverted intuition* , that constantly reminds us of millions of possible ways this could happen again, the things that we experience vividly every day.
    **Solution:**
    - In my case, it was *Zen meditation*. What you practice is to stop thinking and start acting, or not acting; just not thinking, is something you practice by not allowing a single thought to pass through your mind. Just like you don’t get biceps and abs like the rock over a day, your thoughts will not be controlled over a day. But it truly helps turning off when the *introverted sensing* and the *extroverted intuition* start to glitch in your head.
    2. **External inspiration:**
Having an *INTJ brother* and an *INFJ friend* truly helped me improve my *extroverted thinking*. What would make an INFP actually take action is if it is for the sake of someone else. The combination of being able to process feelings and seeing patterns, we love to solve complex problems. We can see a problem before someone even knows it is a problem. We truly rely on having a partner or someone to die for to spark up that initiation because we would not hesitate to plan and take action if it was that we could see our pain in someone else.
    2.5. Having an *INTJ brother*
Who could easily break down my complex thoughts, and help me see things such as: “the work you put down on making music usually requires a group of 10 people but you’re doing it alone, you have to realize that you have a great talent that would truly shine if you had a group of people who helped you finish the song; or let’s say you were one part of the processes, then all your projects would also be finished. You’re putting a lot of weight on your shoulders and should consider grouping up with people where you together work on projects instead.”
    - It made me realize that I had put a lot of stress and expectations on myself that weren’t realistic.
    **Conclusion:**
    - We seem to be depressed and hopeless cases. What makes it more sad is the talent we possess but it’s never seen by the public eye. The amazing partners we are but sometimes never become.
    - We are filled with surprises where you could expect one thing, but then get something you’d never expect to find. They say it might take 20 years, but that’s all it takes and we would be millionaires having a family and the dream partner and dream life. It simply takes a lot of time, you could call us underdogs. Nice guys finish last, but they finish the best. Definitely the kind of personality you would point to and say “he will stay a loser for the rest of his life… He’ll never change…”
Maybe I didn’t get $1 million or a wife or a family, but I became a *zen master* who transcended all the materialistic things you could ask for in this life.
You truly never know what an INFP is going to end up as, it definitely does not look good, but it definitely will be.
**What I love about being an INFP:**
    - Seeing and understanding things way before even I myself know why. It’s not intuition, but that *Ne + Si*. And most of all is my vivid inner imagination; I can see my movie, and I can hear my music and see my pictures as vividly as if it was already done. Just going to school for all of them takes time and not having any functions to execute makes it kind of frustrating, of course. My dream is to one day be able to express everything that’s going on inside of my head, and I hope artificial intelligence can help us do that.
My greatest wish before I die is to see artificial intelligence progress so far that INFPs will see their light of day.
*Text-to-INFP = INFPs will become the new master race, real Alphas.*
    😂♥️

The best part of you becoming a zen master is that you’re closest to your god consciousness and can create that 1+Million and wife in a short period of time! I do that’s a big part of being an INFP how connected you can be to spirituality/the truth. Thank you ..
It's hard being an INFP we think and perceive things differently that most.
It's excruciating to relate to others somedays and glorious in the moments where we are able to..
We live in a spectrum of elation and then disappointment in any given moment.
I never feel validated as an INFP, and often made to feel inferior, or what I have to offer is less than others.
I have such huge compassion on a good day..
My hope is huge on a good day.
My love and compassion for others is big on a good day.
It's the multiple bad day spells that leave you exhausted crabby frustrated and wanting to be left alone in the cathartic process that are hard.
I wish I had more good than bad days.
Those darn melancholy days make me feel so bad about myself, what I have to offer and my capabilities.
I do appreciate you validating us however..
    Thats so nice of you.
I am so glad you appreciate us..
Yes we have few friends because we have unbelievably high standards for them.

I’m an INFP and this is so insightful…thank you. I am a new subscriber. Have not come across such depth before
Si is like my wounded child, I got like that for a long while recently. And one issue was I wasn’t creating / acting on anything, I was losing my mojo
I used to be a designer and my Te was extremely strong then. I look back and it was sublime at times. It was high heights, creating visions and manifesting them. Makes sense now that I understand the power of Fi & Te in harmony.
Now I’m retraining as a psychotherapist and it allows me to indulge in my Fi so much I love it! But I got too naval-gazing and stuck in the past. Everything was happening inside and got out of balance.
Only now I’m finding a new equilibrium. Developing my practice as a therapist, and a way of living that practices my values, strengthening my Te again
Really excited where this takes me. Feels very synchronistic to come across this material now as I’m bringing my Ne back online. Only the other day I was thinking about how my inner parent is in the driving seat now, and it’s safe enough to let my inner child come out

Really love your explanations! I’m an INFP teen, and as I develop Ne I really find myself having more fun with life. When we’re at our best, life is an endless array of possibilities and outlets to express our values. One of my goals in life is to create something meaningful like a video game or tv show, as I absolutely love indie media and I’m so happy to live in a time where it’s possible to be a widely successful indie creator. These dreams comes with a cost, of course. Personally at least, it’s really easy (too easy) for me to lean too hard into Si. At my worst, I’m too stuck in my own head reminiscing on the past, things people have said to me, and the things I can’t do. Yes, it’s true that thriving as an INFP in this world is extremely tough. We are constantly berated for being too quiet, too childish, too lazy, sometimes even by those we’re closest to. But we can’t seriously let people convince us that we absolutely CAN’T thrive. Us creatives have so much to offer, and we can’t let those qualities go to waste. There’s a reason so many memorable and important creatives were INFPs. Anyway, just wanted to share my experience, and I ended up going on a little rant. 😅 Regardless, this video is absolutely SPOT ON! You did a great job!! Stay well, fellow INFPs! ❤
Edit: I really appreciate how you touched on INFPs getting a bad rep in the MBTI community. That aspect really sucks. When I had first discovered that I was an INFP, I was overjoyed, literally to the point of tears. I feel like I had gone a lot of my life feeling “misunderstood”, (that probably sounds self-centred ;-;) so I was really excited to finally have a community that understood. But honestly, I found that a lot of the MBTI community really looks down upon us, and disregards anything we have to say simply because we’re the “feely crybaby INFPs”. Lemme just say though, these videos and articles such as yours really make it all worth it, and the INFP community by itself is awesome! Thanks for the video!

The Te random screaming spike attack was so true lol. I used to have sporadic motivation to change something about my life, be it my diet or to write a book or to exercise or whatever. It would last a couple days to a week or two, but then I would revert back to my old Si ways. But your INFP videos and also planning videos have helped me out a lot to become more of a planner. Actually, I'm leaving for a study abroad trip in Australia and New Zealand in about two weeks. At first Si told me it was too big of a plan and I'd never follow through, but I used my Ne to get excited about such and opportunity and my Te to plan for this trip for the past 6-8 months, and now I'm about ready to leave! Something about your videos, I think it's your Te that speaks to my inferior Te, never fails to inspire and motivate me to not let laziness and procrastination in Si stop me from doing things I want to do. Excellent insights on why and how as an INFP I was pushed into being stuck from primary Fi improving the world.
Affirming that all my random secondary function Ne loves (ethics, maps, languages, philosophy, meditation, Star Trek, fantasy, song lyrics…) are on a right track!
That my child-like auxiliary Ne needs to be the real parent to keep the secretly stuck-in-the-mud third/tertiary Si ‘problem teen’ in check is mind-blowing.
Actually playing with to choose and refine a time- and task- management system from quaternary/inferior Te so I can begin to write and learn more efficiently and own my masteries makes sense! (My using math and spreadsheets to create personalized reward systems that work for me in spurring daily progress across various apps to reach stretch goals tells me I have already been embracing extroverted thinking / real-world logic in an INFP way, decades after being thrust into early development of all functions by demanding family, education, and work environments.)

I think one thing that separates the extroverted judging functions to introverted judging functions is having obligations to others (Fe and Te) vs obligations to self (Fi and Ti). Especially when I think of Fe I think of being respectful (for the sake of it), family (for the sake of it), manners (for the sake of it). For Te I think of responsibility in relation to time, I find that a lot of Te users put themselves into what they do more than figuring out who they are. At least from an Fi perspective it feels really frustrating at times. I know for me personally I have this concept of what I call “the boy with a hollow voice” where there’s this boy character who just spews meaningless words, who doesn’t stand true for what they believe in and just fills the cracks. I try really hard not to be the boy.

7 yrs ago and have grown so accustomed to the hypocricy, insincere niceness and apathetic indifference prevalent in my area, i was beginning to believe people everywhere had become non supportive and having ill will towards one another. Thank you for dispelling that belief before it took full form within me. Your insights and work-arounds for potential pitfalls of my INFP type that you offer prove very helpful.. But what really made my eyes tear was your non judgemental manner and a sincere vibe that you want everyone to succeed in themselves and their lives. It pulled on all my heartstrings and it's likely that INFP's possess more than most others. :)

Relating to extroverted intuition, I have really enjoyed fantastical stories grounded on reality lately. Philip Pullman, Haruki Murakami. Moreover, my line manager has encouraged me to present publicly which I have really enjoyed and has really expanded my consciousness. I’ve been told I’m good at it and has led to personal growth. Albeit in my late 50’s. Foremost, I have become really aware of what I don’t like. Predominately routine.

  • @nathanielmwhite

INFP here, I’m 35, no college degree, and haven’t gotten to really do all the things I’ve dreamt of doing, just in short bursts (for a short season I would play my music at open mics, but never got to record an album, which I would still love to do). And there’s that irony of wanting to do only what I want but because of Si ruts I end up confined to doing what I don’t enjoy, working a job that’s unfulfilling (and requires a lot of stressful overstimulating Te work). I occasionally get into a Te grip and start earnestly studying music theory or learning Japanese or whatever it is, but then a week later I slide back into comfortable routine while all these half-written notebook entries and 1% started projects are discarded never to be revisited.
When I pulled up this video I skipped directly to the weak functions because I want to crack the code on becoming an accomplished (my Fi hates that word, it sounds so arrogant) and actually achieve the things I’ve valued but haven’t done. I also watched a Matt Sherman / Geek Psychology video this week where his advice was that action precedes motivation, you need your Te to get the bicycle pedals going and then you will see a flood of Ne motivation taking the wheel (er, handlebars) and you can start to really explore possibilities and bring them to fruition.
Thanks for your content, I like that it’s a data dump but easy to follow and practical. Being an INFP can either feel like a blessing one day (“I’m unique!”) or a curse the next day (“I have no follow through!”), but I think it’s one of the types that has the most potential for growth but only if that word potential doesn’t remain static (I’m reminded of that quote in Spider-Man 2 where Otto calls Peter [an INFP] “brilliant but lazy”). My dream/goal is to find a vocation that is fulfilling and satisfies my need to influence that world in a positive way through calm petition and not the striving of competition.
    Keep making awesome videos!

HI, in your movies all the cognitive functions are probably described in the best possible way, but what is not taken into account is their order. While Ne is in fact in theory very optimistic, in case of INFPs it takes a role of being aware of consequences, so kind of hampering. It slightly differs from Ne in Hero spot (ENFPs) when it is exactly so much optimistic, as described here. As a result developed Ne used by INFPs (INTPs) is probably the best cognitive function possible, as mature Ne of INF(T)Ps combines its generic optimistic root with awareness.
(Probably you describe it in other words as "underused" strength. This underusing is this pesisimistic approach to consequences, but when used regularly and developed it becomes crucial strength in every aspect)

    Please consider strongly
(at least as an exercise) ,
    to always when talking about INFP to the probably always 97% non-INFP ;
    ..tell THEM about possible necessity,
    AS A Society,
to create, integrate and garantie living and developing space, (norms !),
    specifically for the INFP,
    perhaps thuse
not the almost shaming the INFP that they have to get to understand themselfs their value. Because, what is 'value', if not 'usefulness'.
Or else, it is misunderstood with "become a more competent survivor".
Sure, it is about leveling ourselves, but I feel (!), INFP are perhaps the only ones that are off-balanced by societal missunderstanding (least their own). ?

CZcams won't allow me to link my book but it is called God's Perfect Plan. It's a children's book. I didn't get it done until I was 65 and I have a second one I am working on. It sells better in person when people can pick it up and see it so I may never sell a lot online. I try to stay motivated by visualizing the children who will read my book and benefit from it. So to other INFP's I will say don't wait until you are 65 to work on your dream but if you are older, it's never too late.

im certain i use a level of Ne, so i cant be Ne blind, but im not sure. If you can could you give me your thoughts? (no pressure)
Im excited about the future of AI and VR, but i havent thought about it much other then imagining if a creepy robot chases me for my entire life without being able to stop it, and if they made a Harry potter VR game.
I also use more Ne when im excited or have a lot of energy, like i was thinking about how the next 'Beyond the Spiderverse' will begin. Im open to all ideas but i just dont think i always have the energy to come up with them myself
e.g- I get excited thinking about all the animals, planets, stars and creatures that exist/have existed/might exist that we dont know about , and if the aliens have created something humans havent. Or if there is a planet out there with inhabitants of robots, but i never really think about MULTIPLE possibilities. I am aware that there is soo many possible things out there though.
